This is my go-to when returning to LA, right by LAX (Shen the street from the Parking Spot Sepulveda). Surprisingly quality sushi on its daily special menu. Dont expect much atmosphere.

Was excited to visit after seeing such good reviews, but definitely left disappointed!I would say it’s quite expensive for what you get (which is fine if it’s amazing food), but it’s not.The sushi is cut reeeeeally thick, and served on very little rice, so the ratios were all off for me.Also, nothing seemed to be very cold? Sushi rice falls apart if it’s not refrigerated, and this tasted like a fresh batch so it was really awkward to eat, kept falling out.For reference, I ordered the sushi combo lunch set - California roll (very heavy on the mayo taste) and a chefs selection of nigiri.There was only 1 other couple there.I came out from LAX with a few hours to kill, should have just gone to the lounge 😅

$$$Great quality Japanese food. If you sit at the bar you can watch them make the sushi. My date and I were mesmerized as we watched the process, with the chef artfully preparing the sushi dishes. Good combo of authentic Japanese food and also westernized Japanese food.We ordered the deep fried gyoza, and deep fried salmon roll appetizer to start. Then we ordered a spicy salmon roll which wasnt on the menu but they made it anyway, and then we shared a spicy miso ramen.The ramen was delicious, broth was good, the pork slices were soft, and my date enjoyed the pork even though she doesnt normally like the pork. I also ordered their Japanese beer on special that day. Perfect pair for the food.For dessert we ordered matcha mochi ice cream that paired well with the sliced strawberries.Overall 8.75/10. Would order the ramen again.

Sushi here was great - quality was pretty high and portion size was good. A bit pricey but understandable with the proximity to the airport. Parking can be hard to find as well so plan carefully.

Amazing service and food. Great surprise too that the restaurant is run by actual Japanese people so youre getting real authentic food. Everything from the sashimi, hot green tea and tempura was fresh and came out fast. If youre in the area, especially going to or from LAX, definitely stop by Kanpai Japanese restaurant.

This is a fun place to be, clearly with izakaya vibe. Very close to the airport. The large collection of alcohol if youd like and the food is quite decent! We got sashimi prepared with various sauces, not so traditional but it is good. They also have grilled dishes and ramen for those who need heavier food as well.

Food is delicious and fresh. Price is a bit high but fair for the quality and portion. A huge parking lot behind the restaurant. So no problem finding a parking. However, theres no sign at the back of the restaurant on the parking lot side. So it will be hard to find the restaurant if not on Sepulveda Blvd. Our waiter was nice. I didnt give a 5 star rating because the restaurant wasnt very clean. The windows to the street probably havent been cleaned for weeks. The dining furniture was overall sticky and the flooring not clean either. Again, food is good.

Great food. Our server was so nice and attentive. I really enjoyed the food here. I appreciate the various combos they have so that I can get a little of everything I like.I had the chicken teriyaki, mixed tempura, and Cali roll. My husband had the short rib plate — this was delicious by the way!! And my sister had the mini tendons bowl.Flavorful food, appropriate portion sizes, and good timing. This was a great spot.

Really great japanese food! they have a huge menu but everything is very well executed, which is especially apparent in the simpler stuff like nigiri. a bit on the pricey side but worth it for the quality. restaurant has a nice unassuming vibe to it too. recommend!!

I spent my Christmas in LA this year and found this was one of the only non chain restaurants open so I went in for dinner. Great find! The waiters were so friendly as were the sushi chefs. The food was delicious and we didnt have to wait too long for it. It was a clean atmosphere and the authentic food was perfect. The pricing was very reasonable and the location was right off the road. Great place for lunch or dinner!

Ive recently been on the hunt for tasty ramen...stumbled upon this place. Ill go through a break down of some important categories.Staff and service: very friendly and the food came out quickly. Atmosphere was nice, little drafty in the front seating area.Food: decent portions. The ramen was decent but Im sad that it doesnt come with an egg. The food is also a little pricey.Parking: if you park at the staples (behind the building) and walk over it makes things super simple.

Very Cool Place with Absolutely Wonderful Service from the the Lovely waitresses. My daughter and I truly loved the fresh Delicately, Delicously made Food. The Octopus was Fried Perfectly and flavored Very Well! The Tumeric Season blend is Exceptional. My daughter had the Albacore Tuna Roll ....Absolutely Delicious! My Blue Crab Wrapped in Nori was Devine. We ordered 2 rolls to take Home. Dont even remember what they were (my apologies) But murder was the case my daughter caught with both of them LMAO! Take your time the menu is as long as this review, thats why Im a regular from now on.....at least until Ive had EVERYTHING ON THE MENU!

I enjoyed a nice big meal: hot sake, creamy lobster hand roll and chirashi sushi. The sushi also came with soup and sunomono salad making it a very large meal. The portions were good and the meal was nicely presented. The staff, despite being by herself during peak period, was cordial and attentive.

Unfortunately when we got there, there were no seats readily available and they had to squeeze us in between tables and the waitress even have us a table with only 1 chair and had to lift a chair over some customers while they were eating. For me that was very inappropriate and very unacceptable. The place was too crowded in a sense that people are shouting at each other because you can literally hit elbows from people seated from the next table. The place is just terrible for me. The waitresses were not well trained, in fact a waitress gave a customer an untimely shower when she tipped over glasses of water from a tray shes holding to serve to customers from the next table. It was a bad experience for me.

This is close to LAX but not as busy and has plenty of parking (we ended up parking at Ralphs and walked across the street).We needed a quick meal before driving out of LA and thought about having ramen. Most of the ramen we had are salty but we loved their tonkatsu ramen. It was well seasoned, not salty but very flavorful. I also loved their rainbow sushi. The fish tasted fresh (not frozen).The place is not that big and theres limited seating but it gets really packed as dinner service starts. And thats proof of the good food Kanpai serves.

Truly authentic.Japanese sushi makers are out front, creating masterpieces to be devoured.Pitchers of Asahi draft beer are served here.You can get live shrimp and octopus.They have the most amazing ramen, and this location serves that serves ramen all day. The other location only serves ramen after 10PM. Something is special with the ramen here. You can take ramen orders Togo but you cannot take ramen that you’ve ordered for the table Togo.They serve sushi pizza, give it a try its delicious.For dessert my favorite is the mochi ice cream and lava cake that is served with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.If you really want to be authentic with them, buy all the chefs a round of beers and Kanpai! or cheers! with them when they are serve their beers.

Not your average sushi spot in my opinion. Seems like a popular destination for many in a busy sector of LA near LAX. Cant say I have tried the in restaurant dining experience but I can surely attest to their to go experience. As sushi lovers a friend of ours was raving about this place & its hand roll platter for such a great price. I can surely appreciate a sushi place with great tasting fish & really friendly price! The hand roll platter is a secret hidden gem for LA sushi goers. As a take home option this platter has the right portions for several people to enjoy all while enjoying the experience of rolling your own hand rolls.For $25 bucks we got to eat Id say 10-12 hand rolls with sizable portions. They give you more than enough rice, seaweed paper, fish of all sorts, shrimp, veggies, ginger & wasabi! Ordered some gyoza & a miso soup as well to complete our Japanese dinner experience.I wish they would add the special menu to their yelp order platform bc it would be easy to enjoy my Apple Card perks with Apple Pay but not a bad order experience over the phone. Food was ready for pickup within 30 mins of placing order & pickup was easy & convenient as they were heading into their dinner rush.We are definitely going to give this place another visit thanks to the great hand roll platter deal.

The original Kanpai was our favorite sushi in LA and weve always wanted to come to the new location. Also a win! Their fish selection is unbelievable and so fresh! *this next one only get if you are slightly adventurous: ama ebi (sweet shrimp). We get one every time. Shrimp so fresh they bring you the tail and, well youll see the rest. You must have a stomach for it. And the second part, choose tempura fried. $10 per one piece of shrimp, but you get the entire body too and hes alive till you eat the tail.

Honestly I don’t know if it was an off day or what because there’s so many other good reviews but I could only eat three pieces of sashimi and each one got significantly worse. The fish tasted old and the rice was soggy and stale tasting as well. Tried one California roll piece and it hardly had any taste. The miso soup was just okay. Honestly the best part of this $29 dollar meal was the cucumber in the salad.

The sushi rice was wierd (kinda sweet), the ponzu sauce didnt taste like ponzu at all, the albacore tuna was dark dark red like regular tuna, and they got a special request on a roll wrong even though I said it right to the sushi chef at the bar. Just the worst quality sushi ingredients Ive ever come across, even though they were super friendly, I coukdnt finish half my meal. And the sushi pieces were no bullsh@+ 18.50 for just 2! This aint no fine dining either, just not a good food experience.

Expensive, but extensive. Their menu ranges the whole price spectrum from a 14 dollar roll, to a 75 dollar plate of wagyu beef. The menu was also over 20 pages long with 13 more pages for drinks alone. They have cutlets, lambs, soups salads, seafood, caviar. Anything. And everything I had (sushi and pork cutlets) was amazing quality. Super recommend the salmon sampler. Bring a date here and they will probably fall in love. But be careful cause that $$$ can add up fairly quickly here.

Kinmedai, Engawa, impressive varieties of mackerel are standard & delish but the Phoenix Moon (creamy toro & uni) + the premium black sea perch are 2DIE4!!! One of the best fish restaurants we have ever been to. Spanish octopus melts in your mouth, exemplary swordfish (before that, I always thought that swordfish is tough enough, but thats because you have to know how to cook it - and they know how here). And even the ribeye is excellent, although this is not the specialty of the restaurant. Huge selection of craft beers from taps, great selection of wines, even by the glass. I came to dine-in, there were 3 people and 2 of us when we first walked in. We waited for about 10 minutes without anyone saying hello or asking us if we wanted a table. Arrived here at around 7ish. Party of two. Another family of 3 was already waiting there. Then 2 more came in. Then a lady of 4 came in with reservations. The reservation lady was obviously attended to first but in that moment of attending to her they ignored everyone else who has been waiting there far longer after she came. Then 2 more people arrived followed by 3 more. One lady came to just pick up food and one of the waitress just kept trying not to acknowledge her. Even when the lady said excuse me, the waitress glanced and walked away. The front door just kept on piling new people with no one to even acknowledge us. I get that it can be busy, even from my own experience of working in a restaurant, but being ignored by literally everyone not even a hello, welcome kind of through me off. Was a regular here for about two years. Never once had a bad experience here. But today was different. As soon as we entered, we were ignored by the servers. Instead they went ahead to help out some white people. Just because we were Hispanic I knew that they were being discriminatory. Then we had to speak up to ask for a table. Worst customer experience I ever had here at the restaurant. I came for lunch at work with my co workers and team. The server was super rude and ignored us we had to ask him for menus and he only gave us two (we are a party of 6). We wanted to split the check two ways and he said we are unable to do that so we asked if we could split the table and he said. Love this place, every time I fly out of LAX I always arrive a hour earlier than needed before I drop off the rental car to hit this place up. The sushi and Maki is fresh and much much better than anything I can get in chicago. The Toro (fresh blue fin belly fat) sushi or sashimi is unbelievably delicious and melts in your mouth. We come here for a very unique ramen dish. Before indoor dining was prohibited because of the pandemic I found out about this place at their first location on Lincoln. The JapanUp magazine had an ad that mentioned spicy yuzu ramen and we tried it out for lunch the very next week. It was so very delicious and addicting! Tart, spicy, savory with just a little bit of sweetness to make things interesting! When they opened their 2nd location and we learned the chef who prepared the ramen was moving over there as well we moved our spicy yuzu ramen lunch dates over there, too. We found out recently that they do offer that dish to go and my wife is very happy about that! We have enjoyed this amazing dish many times since we found out about getting it to go. The ramen is the best thing on the menu. Sometimes it’s a little hectic but it’s the best sushi in the area so it’s worth the wait. The daily menu is always amazing but can get costly very quickly. Come ready to blow your money and enjoy it.

My favorite place to get sushi when traveling through LAX. I always make it a point to either get an Uber or stop by in my rental when flying in or out. Great selection and quality for the price. Try the full lobster roll!

Very clean and accessible restaurant. They provide big portions and for inexpensive rates. We loved the meals a lot and the staff members were super friendly and informative. Will definitely recommend this restaurant.

Stumbled on this checking for Asian food using Yelp. Man what a surprise. We were trying to avoid going to In-N-Out which I know doesnt really say much but people I work with love that garbage. I was able to convince them to go to Kanpai and now every time we land in LA we find ourselves eating here. Menu is pretty tough to get thorough but weve had great success ordering sushi and any of the ramen bowls. Can get pretty busy, weve had better lunch eating around lunch time than the evening but the wait has never been too bad. Certainly looking forward to my next trip to LA and thats only based on the chance of going back to Kanpai.

After a long day in LA, my sweet Valentine decided to walk all the way to Kanpai to surprise me and bring me my favorite Ramen. On the way back he wanted to keep the ramen nice and hot so he caught a cab back to the hotel. Imagine both our surprise when we opened the bag and found that the ramen had to be assembled and microwaved 😆. Off I went downstairs to the hotel cafe with two ramen containers in my hand and finally after microwaving both, I was happily walking to the elevator when plop, one of the handles of the ramen container gave away, and my beautiful ramen was spread all over the floor. I literally wanted to cry lol. After cleaning up my mess, I went upstairs and split the one remaining ramen with my husband. The ramen was ok in taste. I think it would have been tastier if it came assembled and with the home made tonkatsu broth instead of microwaved broth.

Id ramen lunch set which comes with sushi rolls. Yummy and very reasonable price. But my husband had a $100 sashimi. It was his 2nd time eating their $100 sushi. The 1st time was a lot better as the shrimp was still alive and moving. The 2nd time was just raw fish that was nothing extraordinary

Thanks for the dinner it was great!!! It is nice to know it is open late and close to the airport hotels. The service was excellent and fast, the food was delicious and it had a unique taste. I would definitely recommend coming to this restaurant any day.

If you go here you may expect a rushed experience. The server was rude and replied to my questions as if I was a nuisance in the restaurant. All I came in for was some good sushi but instead left with a taste of salt, and no... it wasnt from the soy sauce!

I personally dont write a lot of reviews but with this restaurant I had too. I dont recommend this place, the food is not that great and its way over priced. The salmon teriyaki was not cooked to my liking, the sauce was salty. The broccoli was under cooked and the atmosphere of the restaurant was noisy and not pleasent to be there. Disappointing is putting it mildly, I would not eat here again nor recommend this place.

Not cheap but absolutely terrific. My Uni was perfect, as was the Toro. The sautéed rock shrimp and Brussels sprouts really tasty too. Udon excellent. Staff crazy busy but very attentive, friendly and great attitude. Loved it.

Food was prepared quickly I am from the OC side of LA.This place was listed as low priced on the far west side.A rainy Sunday night, and open until 11pm, so I gave it a try.I asked about the lobster roll, 35 dollars!Westside!2 rolls, 1 beer, they forgot to serve the misso soup, still remembered to charge me. 38 total.

We needed a place to eat that was close to the airport and this place popped up. Im glad I tried it. I got the chashu ramen and it was really good and a nice generous serving with plenty of pork. We also got california roll and eel roll and spare ribs which were all very good.

Kanpai features a massive menu that combines sushi, teriyaki, ramen, and izakaya dishes. In addition, there are tons of sushi/sashimi specials on an ever-changing daily menu, including several rare varieties of fish. While the service is generally harried, chaotic, and impersonal, the quality of the fish is excellent. Specialty rolls are pricey yet large and very creative, and the izakaya dishes are quite tasty. (I could eat Nasu Miso until the end of time.) Just do yourself a favor and order at least one item from the daily sushi menu because you wont find some of these fish anywhere else in the U.S. Note this is the larger of two Kanpai locations, which are about a seven minute drive apart from one another.

Best Japanese food EVER!! Open late with great cocktails, the food is absolutely AMAZING!!! Cant get enough of the king crab sushi and the ramen is out of this world. A bit pricy but worth every penny.
