Great sushi and excellent customer service !I ordered the John roll and vegetable tempura. The sauce on the John roll was really good! Probably one of the best rolls Ive ever had!Came in with a big group of 11 people and they had some big tables towards the back of the restaurant that comfortable accommodated our entire party.The hostess was very nice and attentive and answered all of our questions. Had a few different servers and all were very friendly and made the experience very positive.Sunday is all day happy hour! I posted a picture of the happy hour, with most dishes being discounted about $5! Large selection from the happy hour menu to choose from.I ended it all with some mochi ice cream for dessert! They had 7 flavors to choose from: vanilla, red bean, coffee, strawberry, mango, chocolate and 1 other that I cant quit remember. I got the vanilla and red bean and did not regret my decision at all! The red bean was my favorite!Highly recommend for small and even larger groups! They said that can accommodate groups even larger than ours!

We went there at Sunday night and they have happy hour menu all day long. All dishes on happy hour menu are discounted. The chirashi sashimi is fresh and very good. We also enjoyed the rolls, very tasty! People there are very friendly and attentive, very much recommended!

I wanted some good sushi in Oakland and initially found directions to another place nearby. The Uber driver said if I was looking for sushi, then Kansai was the place. He was right. Nice selection, preparation, and presentation was beautiful. I think the size of each plate was generous as well. I would recommend it and Ill return again whenever Im in Oakland.

Wanted to try their happy hour 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The food was good but unfortunately one of the dishes we had ordered had a piece of hair in it. When we notified the waitress she wasnt to nice about it but eventually offered a new plate.

This place has been the spot for great sushi and Japanese food in the Temescal neighborhood for 15+ years. The food and service are always reliably good but every now and then they have an amazing special like this blue fin and toro combo - super high quality fish, perfectly cut, and melt in your mouth fatty goodness. 🐲

This Japanese restaurant was truly impressive. From start to finish, the fresh ingredients and meticulous cooking techniques were evident. The menu diversity was excellent, and the sushi and sashimi, in particular, delivered amazing flavors. The service was friendly and prompt, and the ambiance was what youd expect from a Japanese restaurant. It offered great value for the price, and its definitely a place Id like to visit again. Overall, this is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys Japanese cuisine

My boo and I pooped and to get something to eat real quick after having been at Temescal Brewery. To be fair, it was a Saturday evening and fairly busy. I feel like we will go back to check it out again. But what its worth, the food was wonderful. I wish I had known about the specials before I ordered. I didnt notice that they had tuna carpaccio until I was halfway through my meal.

One of the most consistent, affordable and best sushi places in the Bay Area.You will not be disappointed. They make the rolls just the right amount of ingredients and make it taste absolutely mouth watering and reminiscent. Crave worthy and one of the best creations they have is the spicy chirachi bowl! Cannot have enough of that.They have great happy hour specials, and happy hours are long enough and at perfect times.I usually get the volcano roll, spicy chirachi, kansai roll, baked green muscles and gotta have some tempura. This is why I cannot go alone, Must bring friends and family to share the goodness.Their bento box has great selections with generous portions.

Japanese food tends to be expensive in the US but Kansai is an exception. The prices are reasonable, the portions are large (leaving enough for leftovers unless you’re super hungry), and the quality is very good. They’re also open late which is also great (and rare). They have a parking lot but it’s small and the ambiance is meh, but those are small things relative to cheap good food open late.

Very generous portions, and great happy hour prices left us super satisfied.Definitely suggest the perfectly crispy vegetable Gyoza and the excellent quality fish served in the chirashi bowl.Some places seem to give you very few, extra thin slices of fish on a chirashi. Here the slices were perfectly sized and plentiful.My only critique was the rice for the bowl being a little underseasoned - but Im unsure if it was meant to be served with sushi rice or plain steamed white rice.100% will be coming back

We went here tonight and probably wont be back any time soon. We got seated right away, and the service was actually great at this place.What wasnt so great, was the quality of the food. We ordered 3 different rolls that ranged from okay to inedible. The fresh rolls were okay, but the tempura in them had gone cold and soggy. The fried roll was pretty bad - the rice tasted so old and it was very chewy? We ate one piece each before we decided anymore would probably make us sick.Like other recent reviewers said - were not by any means connoisseurs of sushi. But the quality of food here was very subpar, especially for how expensive it was ($100+ for the two of us ordering just a few rolls and some drinks).

Use to love this place went all the time; more recently, the service has been less than.My most recent four times trying in the last few months:1-2I had delivery two different times, and both times, the food was subpar at best. One of the two times I threw the food away, and I always eat in full, particularly Sushi Bento Boxes Etc. ( it seemed it was lunch leftovers reused for dinner. Food was warm rather than fresh)3I went in person in the middle of the week. No one was in the restaurant as they had just opened it, was completely ignored, waited for some time, and ended up leaving.4Attempted to go again this time there was someone right at the door when I walked in as well as someone making food to the right of me so they saw me however still not acknowledgedTwo things, perhaps generationally, the tides are shifting, and the interest in the workers are not there, hence the average food theres no care in it; second, it seems theyre less enthusiastic and less serving to POC.

New Edit: Just found they over charged me 28 bucks for a 18 dollar meal! Check your receipts before you leave. This was happy hour too! :(—-Happy Hour you can fill up on the goods! Reasonable prices and decent grub! It also seems like they’re always open. Chicken and rice is my staple there for a post workout meal. Disclaimer: I was avoiding making this review because I didnt want them to get review bombed by TikTok (I made a video about this situation and it went pretty viral...with hundreds of people demanding me to say the name of the restaurant. Despite this situation I dont think they deserve that but I think its been long enough now so Im leaving this review...)Now the review: I had a very terrible experience for my birthday dinner which still makes me sad to this day since Kansai used to be one of my favorite places to get sushi and have dinner.I made a reservation almost a month in advance for a party of 18, I called a week before to verify that the reservation was still good to go to which they put my card on file to secure the spot, and I even called the day of to let them know I was on my way.When I arrived at Kansai, some of my guests who arrived before me made me aware that they gave my reservation to the wrong group...a group that wasnt even close to 18. Youre probably wondering how that happened? Well, when this random group came in, the wait staff asked if they were the reservation for Liz for 18?, to which they answered yes despite the fact that they were not the group...and no there was no way that this group had someone else named Liz because they were all men. And there were only about 8 or 9 of them...why they said yes to a reservation that wasnt theres...I have no clue. One of my guests even went up to them and asked if they were part of the party (assuming maybe they just didnt know those friends of mine) and they laughed and said we dont know who Liz is we just wanted to get seated. Want to join us?Despite the fact that the group wasnt there for long, the Kansai staff still didnt kick them out because they had already been seated. So instead we had to wait for a new spot...for a group of 18. This took about 1.5 hours, where we had to stand outside in the cold. When we were finally seated, the wait staff barely checked on us and we had to get up and go to the counter to ask for service multiple times. I also was never offered an apology, discount, or any sort of acknowledgement of this mistake. I sincerely regret not asking for the manager, but I also shouldnt have needed to. I overall left feeling very sad and disappointed on my birthday, and I havent returned since even though I used to eat here pretty regularly (hence why I wanted to have my birthday there).Overall, Im still very upset that this happened and Ive never experienced unprofessionalism like this before. Again, this used to be one of my favorite restaurants in the bay but this is something that I just cant get over.

Tonight we decided Sushi on a whim. Honestly, Kansai wasn’t our first choice but it will be from this point on!The S.P cucumber roll and Sweet Surrender were the stuff of sushi dreams. My salad almost doesnt have a dressing. I couldnt get our server and I had to ask another server for more dressing but she also forgot. Food quality wise I would rate it 3 stars... Salmon is white when I cut it and very thin. Sashimi is soft like it was beat up. Our server only came by our table to check on us after we already finished our food. Price wise, its pretty cheap.

One of (if not the only) sushi places in Temescal. Serves decent quality sushi, and is always hopping with people. A popular spot for a nice evening sushi dinner.Good for the mid-range sushi restaurant. This isnt your fancy place with perfectly cut beautifully uniform sushi, so dont come in with Jiro-level expectations. Youll find all the familiar rolls here, as well as some local specials like the Oakland roll, Temescal Roll, etc. Their menu is quite eclectic so whether youre looking for your favorites like spicy tuna or want to venture into one of their specials, youll find something you liek. They also have Japanese staples like donburi and Udon, for those that dont like sushi.MAKI ROLLS:Spider roll (5 out of 5): Inside: Soft shell crab, imitation crab, cucumber, avocado, gobo, kaiware; Top: Fish egg; Sauce: Unagi sauce. Fried crab was crispy and was balanced by the sweetness of the eel sauce. I notice this about spider rolls in general, but they were quite huge and I couldnt fit it into my mouth in one piece. Had to eat it in two bites like a newb!Make it hot (5 out of 5): Inside: Spicy tuna, cucumber; Top: Seared tuna, jalapeno; Sauce: Ponzu, sesame oil, hot sauce. My favorite maki that we ordered. Outdoor covid friendly dining with heaters and decent amount of seating, 4 per table. Sushi was great quality with lots of different options to choose from. We got the spider roll, Philly roll, Kansai, S.I. Spider, Baked salmon and a couple others. Everything looked too delicious too eat and tasted wonderful! Great service and friendly atmosphere, overall great experience! I highly recommend never ever listening to negative reviews and forming your own no matter where you go. Give anything in life a shot and if it didnt work out the first time, try it again. This sushi place is a great restaurant, I will be back! 5 stars for sure!! While the food was passable for a late-night spot, poor quality was not worth the rude and unprofessional behavior of the staff.Our party of 4 sat after paying and enjoyed small conversation. After walking out, they chased me down and accused me of not paying. Despite paying, tipping, and signing my receipt. I provided proof of payment, but they continued to make baseless accusations and embarrassed me in front of other customers.The lack of accountability and customer service left a bad taste in my mouth.Andrew and Benjamin did not hold themselves accountable for their lack of customer service.DO NOT DINE HERE!!

The nigiris are so fresh and tasty. Definitely try the salmon, toro, hamachi. Loud, crowded, long waits.Great vibes, great food, great crowd, great value.They have a parking lot but you have to be lucky to get a spot, it is small; something like 15 cars can be parked there or less.

My family has been coming here since I was a tween. Their happy hour is amazing, great lunch specials, vegan & vegetarian options. Friendly staff, several took to calling my kid rice girl cuz she has been ordering for herself since she was 2 and loves rice, she usually gets the miso & avocado maki these days. One of my favorite sushi place in Oakland, not the best, but thats okay... 2 of my best are: Unagi Don and Butter Fish shashimi. Tempura is okay but the sauce is too light and a little bit salty taste, it suppose to be sweet, salty, sour all mixed with mirin. 4.5 stars would be more accurate. Great service and food selection. Not necessarily the best sushi Ive had, but definitely solid (the rice was a little on the dry side), but flavors are on point. Service was great! Our server was very helpful and nice. Overall very welcoming atmosphere.They also have their own parking lot which is very helpful and convenient. Their prices are very reasonable. This is one of my regular Japanese restaurants. The food is good, good portions, and reasonably priced. Thats its value to me. So whenever I want a no frills Japanese meal, Im here. Ive been eating here for 12 years, bringing my friends, too. One caveat! I dont eat fish but the menu has lots of non-fish items for us vegetarians. Prices are reasonable, service efficient, and the clientele is extremely diverse (on many levels.) Interior decoration is, well, youre there for the food, right? My fish eating friends love it. Parking is available.

I absolutely love this place!! The ambiance is great. Alot of people good music, and great service! Closes at 2a.m. parking lot out side, or street parking. Usually a little wait at the door. Good food and service. Open later than many locations nearby. My friend drove us there. He parked in the center lane. So, theres plenty of parking if youre willing to embrace Oakland Style. We got individual soups, but we only got one salad. I sat first, he sat with me on the bench..if it was a power play, it worked. I moved to a chair. But they didnt bring us another salad. Good food otherwise, attentive staff, clean.

RAMPANT CAR BREAK-INS at Kansai parking lot. The owners are aware of it yet say nothing to their customers, nor assume any responsibility for your losses. My car got broken into a week ago and it cost me $400 to replace window. Stopped by to ask if they would help with some of the costs and the manager said no, then that I would get a call from owner (2nd such promise). Never got a call. They dont care. Ironically, as I was waiting for the manager she was talking to a guy who had their car window broken the night before. Neighbors of mine have also had their car broken into at this restaurants parking lot and employees at the restaurant admitted this is a regular occurrence. I feel for the restaurant owners but at the same time they could put a sign up and make customers aware of risk. They have done no such thing and that is careless and dishonest. I ordered their Katsudon Buri. It was disappointing to say the least. I can’t rate this entire place poorly because it looks like their specialty is Sushi and not so much other dishes. I usually really enjoy the food from this place, but I ordered food on a Friday night, I got there before it became super busy, was told my food would be ready in 10-15 min. I ended up waiting for about 45 min before I went back in to find out what the hold up was, at this point it had become very busy, the manager started cancelling my order and attempting to refund my money, I had to stop her as I never cancelled my order, I told her I wanted my order and I was told it would be another 20 min. When I finally did get my food, and got home I noticed I was missing an expensive item, the sushi rolls I did have had huge pieces of skin and fat and very little raw yellowtail and salmon meat. Some of the rolls had rice that was undercooked and still hard. I was soooo disappointed. When I called in to complain, they didnt offer me any type of refund, credit or comp, but did give me a credit for the missing item only. To be honest, only half the food was edible. Im not sure I want to go back for the food credit I have. I cant believe I had such a bad experience, and I easily spent almost $70 on that meal.

Two of us went home sick, and no one completely finished their food, which considering sushi as my ultimate favorite food, is a big shame. Parking was easy because they have their own private lot. Expect to see a line starting at 10pm, when their happy hour begins for half-priced sushi (which still wouldnt be worth it).

Definitely didn’t have a bad time...service is good, people are kind, despite that this place is poppin’ on a Thursday night. Obviously it’s draw is the late night hours. Unfortunately the fish is not good quality-not fishy but definitely not fresh tasting, and most of the 6-page menu consists of one imitation crab roll or another covered in mayonnaise and a slew of other sauces :/ probably to cover up the taste of low quality ingredients...definitely not a place I would recommend going for the nigiri/sashimi. But if you like over dressed California style sushi and are looking for a high energy late night vibe I’d say it’s pretty accesible for the average mayonnaise-loving person. If you’re looking for the real thing tho, I’d look elsewhere.

Has really good happy hours, and are open very late. Also has its own parking lot which is nice, especially with how hard it is to park in this area.The rolls arent bad, but what I really enjoy is their nabeyaki udon. Although I dont have room to eat anything else by the time Im done with that.

Ok food, poor customer service. No one acknowledged us when we walked in but the server at the bar stared at us awkwardly. Our order was slid across the table wordlessly. Very weird and rude. A ton of other places in the area with much friendlier staff.

I visited this place, instead of another nearby establishment that had a massive line. I am definitely going back! The sushi is outstanding, service is very friendly and excellent - it was more like being fed in someones house, then visiting a restaurant. Selection of sushi rolls is nothing short of amazing. The prices are about average for sushi in Oakland. Definitely a good spot for sushi.

Just left this place without eating anything. Ordered Sake (Salmon) and it came out with worm holes in it and pieces of skinny black worms embedded in the meat. I sent it back to the chef to give the benefit of the doubt...gross. The waitress assured me that there were no worms, but theyd replace the order anyway. I have fished salmon for years and have seen a few with parasites, this was definitely a diseased fish. I couldnt believe my eyes when I received the same exact piece of fish, flipped over. I GOT PISSED OFF AND WALKED OUT. One of the waiters followed me out and insisted I pay. I walked back in with him and showed him the worm infested fish, he looked disgusted and said nothing. I walked out again. I will never go back to this dive. No trained sushi chef would serve a parasite infested fish.

I’ve been to Kansai a handful of times and I’ve always been pleased with the food and service. Yesterday my fiancé and I decided to eat at Kansai for an early dinner. As we were sitting at the table, I noticed a lot of fruit flies around our table. This should’ve been a red flag for us but we continued to place our order. A couple of hours later we were getting stomach pains and the food didn’t sit right for us. I don’t know if the fish wasn’t as fresh or if the restaurant wasn’t as clean but something at Kansai didn’t do us any good.We won’t be going to Kansai for awhile now!

Kansai is a great restaurant for late night eating as it is open until two in the morning most nights! They have great sushi at reasonable prices with healthy portions. The service varies from time to time-- it can be both excellent on certain days or horrendous on others. Nonetheless it is worth the wait for a great late night meal!

Ordered food and it was to the table within 2 minutes (too fast for fresh sushi) lots of little gnats and flies in the building and also one in my beer. Ordered spider roll and rainbow roll and neither was better than the Bellaire market. Ate shrimp off top of the rainbow and didnt have shrimp flavor tasted more like ginger and other juices from an unwashed cutting board or a overstocked prep area I would assume. Either way 700 people are out of their mind dont go here Im concerned about food poisoning

The girls that works Friday night on 4/12 were rude . I stood there waiting for help and they all just ignored me and kept walking pass me I guess I was invisible to them so I left. I also had a door dash delivery with them and they also ignored me again until I had to say “hello can you see me I have an order to pick up !”. I haven’t even gotten a chance to try their food . Wonderful late night happy hour featuring rolls, sake, sashimi, appetizers and noodles. Friendly service. Parking is usually pretty easy with their attached parking lot. Wait times can get long sometimes, especially during happy hour, but its worth the wait. The John Roll, Hamachi Crunch Roll and the gyoza roll are some worth mentions. Miso soup is on point. Great spot.

One of the best late-night spots in Oakland. Its open till around two, so for all the partygoers out there you may still be able to get a meal even after the club/bar closes. The happy hour for Kansai is also very late, so its almost more attractive when its 1 in the morning. Dont miss out on this one if youre out late in Oakland. The prices are pretty reasonable.

Kansai is one my favorite places to go!! Hands down best place in the area. Even on busy Friday nights they provide delicious food, service, and keep their restaurant clean. They always enough people to service.My favorite rolls are dragon, Katie 1, Godzilla and dream gina!
