Me and my cousins were looking for a place to get fufu. One of the restaurants that we were planning to go to was closed on Sunday, but Thank God we found out Kendejah Restaurant was open! It was my first time having Liberian food and I was not disappointed. As soon as we walked in, Dougie gave us a sample of “The Sauce”, and I knew I had to bring one home to NY. All orders are take out, but we were lucky to sit at the table outside the restaurant. We couldn’t wait to eat that I couldn’t get decent pictures of our dishes. We ordered the oxtail stew, okra, the collard greens with chicken and plantains. It was my first time trying fufu and I enjoyed it. I am not a fan of okra because i’m a texture person, but the okra we got COMPLETELY changed my mind. I would order it again, especially the oxtail. Everything was delicious, you have to try it yourself.

First time eating here, we came for the food food. It was delicious got my entire family our own individual meals, Even though the portions are a really good size, we wanted to try Uber rioting things because we couldnt pick cause it all looked are good. And after we ate it we were glad we did. We tried the medium sauce purchased it. It was so delicious and I love and it have fish inside. We will definitely be back, and I told my family about it already.

A true hidden gem. I was looking for something to eat and took a gamble on this spot and it paid off big time. The oxtail and Fufu were great. I intended to enjoy the meal when I got home but made the mistake of sampling the food while in the car. That led to a change of plans. The oxtails were cooked and seasoned PERFECTLY. I consumed my whole meal while in the car so focused on the food I almost forgot about the crazy sauce they sold there. Its named THE SAUCE, that name alone speaks volumes. That sauce is the biz. I got the mild and it was a perfect blend of heat and pepper. I will be heading back there tomorrow to sample a couple more items on the menu.

This is my second time coming here this week, and I’ll be back again next week so you know the food is amazing! It took me too long to try Liberian food, I couldn’t believe how delicious it is.. I’ve been missing out! I’m always looking to try different African restaurants in the bay and I’m glad I came here. I recommend the palm butter and the potato greens. Try them you’ll love it! I look forward to trying everything on the menu. They also have plantain fufu which i was very happy about because most African spots only have pounded yam.Oh and the sauce!! The sauce is so good it LITERALLY goes with everything. It’s super tasty & kinda spicy so grab a jar while you’re there. The owner Dougie is so pleasant & welcoming, and the service is quick!

We had their #1 dish with rice and chicken and plantainabsolutely tender chicken. Delicious sauce.It’s been my second time here last time I had the oxtail stew and it was amazing. I tried their signature hot sauce, and it tasted perfect.Service was quick about 10 minutes.

I tried all the items on the daily menu and saturday menu which includes: Attieke and fish, joloff rice, oxtail, fufu and peanut butter sauce, bean toborgee and potato greens. My favorite and only dish i liked was Attieke and Fish. Potato greens was pretty dry. And i really could not stand the smell of the Bean Toborgee as it was a very strong smell and did not like the taste neither.

Only takeout. Called in and ordered 15-20 min ahead of time and oxtails were amazing. Portion was pretty big so I saved some for dinner. I’ll have to go back another day and try the sauce everyone’s been raving about.

Was craving Liberian food and have been meaning to try Kendejah for a while! My sister and I (both originally from Liberia and Vai) came here with a childhood friend who was interested in trying our food.We came on Saturday-their traditional dishes change daily. We ordered Torborgee andpeanut soup with fufu and some jollof rice. Portions are huge and food was delicious! Torborgee was some of the best Ive had and the fufu was cooked perfectly. The jollof could have used some heat but I tend to like my food with pepper. Its better than any jollof youll eat from another west African restaurant (Nigerian and Ghana jollof cant hold a flame to Liberian jollof). Our server brought us pepper sauce which is VERY HOT but I loved it-you just need a tiny bit.Service was kind and the vibe is authentic. Plus they have a food truck and do catering! These Vai girls will be back for sure!

Delicious! It was my first time having Liberian cuisine, and it was an experience. I usually finish whatever dish Im eating, but I should have invited somebody over or saved some...the portions were pretty big! Give them a call as theyre open pretty late for San Leandro during Covid times.

Love the food here. As an African born(Ghanaian), it is pretty difficult to find really good African cuisine that can remind me of my mother’s cooking. I checked this place out when I got a visit from my cousin. Really impressed how good the Fufu was. He also ordered some rice and fish which looked so good I almost got mad for ordering Fufu, then I took a bite and realized I’m always right when it comes to food haha jk.

Wifey found this spot a few months ago and now we are faithfuls. she gets the potato leaves and I get the Jollof Rice. Not much to complain about here other than I wish they provide a little more sauce with the Jollof Rice . . . . Maybe Ill ask fir extra sauce next time.

I heard about this place from watchingCheck Please Bay Area went with my friend Shirley, the wait was short the food absolutely delicious & flavorful!!! Dougie the owner said hes seen an increase in the past few weeks since it aired. He was the only one working the tables I mean busboy, waiter, host he said he has a full staff but didnt expect this volume on a Sunday. My chicken wings were forgotten & so was my infusion water but he made up for it with a free order of collard greens & rice to take to my son. It was my husbands first time having oxtails with black beans and rice he loved It we will definitely be back😍

One of the best meals I’ve had recently of any type or tradition. Strong recommend! We had the oxtail, snapper, greens and jollof rice. Oxtail was falling off the bone, snapper was so fresh and flavorful, and the greens were succulent and well seasoned. Service was also 10/10

I visited during times which in-door dining was not yet available. I was greeted by a gentleman with great cheer and warm welcoming. My order was on time, confirmed and packed. The aromas were bursting out of the packaging! And once home, and as I dove into my meal, I was WOWed with the perfect balance of flavors, aromatic spices and tender texture of the goat! First time here or eating at any African restaurant. Ive had Jollof rice and know that I love it so I looked for a place in the area. There is currently no dining in so its either take out or if youre lucky you might get a seat at the table outside. We were about to leave when a lady sitting at the table told us she was just waiting for her order and we could eat there.Thankfully we stayed. We have two orders of the jollof rice and chicken plate. The rice was very mild (could be their variation) and the chicken was tomatoey and tender, just delicious. Kinda reminds me of flavors Ive had with Cuban stews which would make sense with the plantation workers (slaves) that were brought to S. America and the Caribbean. Came with fried plantains as well. Ask for hot sauce which is made with Habaneros, he warned us it was hot but I could spread it all over my food, loved it.One person had the potato leaves with chicken and turkey. It doesnt photograph well, most leafy stews dont regardless of ethnicity but it was also delicious, especially if you like that kind of dish. You can find similar textures in dishes made with taro leaves, malungay, and others like it.Lastly one ordered the fried Snapper and it was expertly prepared. Crisp skin and moist tender meat. You get a whole fish. Sorry for the photo, it was covered with some veggies and I couldnt move them as it wasnt my dish but it is definitely also worth ordering.Would definitely come here again if in the area. We all live across the bay but we will all remember eating here.

First time trying Liberian food. Or any African food in general. I got jollof rice and oxtail stew. I’ve been thinking about the food for weeks. Amazing. I wish I could eat inside but with covid and everything else going on in public health. I understand their decision to keep the restaurant closed. That being said their to go container was really sturdy none of my stew leaked or spilled. Constantly thinking about the delicious meal I got from here. Definitely going back.

LOVE this food..... Okay, disclaimer, I ALWAYS order the Jollof Rice with chicken and turkey. On my way there, I tell myself Im going to order something different, but I can never quite do it. The dinner includes delicious plantains. My friend invariably orders the oxtails w/ rice and beans, so Im not the only one with a favorite! Right now, they are still open only for takeout, but the food travels well and is cooked fresh so was plenty warm when we made it home. I look forward to when we can sit inside again!

I’ve been wanting to try West African food for a while but it is hard to find. Kendejah did not disappoint! I had the cassava leaf special. It feels both nourishing from the greens and hearty/rich because of the chicken. It has a slightly earthy/smoky flavor which some people might not like. Reminds me of indian saag or hawaiian laulau. It’s also a huge portion (2 meals) for the price. I would try something different next time!

This restaurant needs to be five stars! I’ve been coming to this restaurant for years now and I was introduced though a friend and I’m so glad that I was. My favorite dish here is the goat pepper soup with Fufu! This is what I come here for! I love the owner and the workers. The owner has a happy person I’m very good with his customers. He also has frozen foods! I just went there today for my goat pepper soup and paid extra for more goat! I love the oxtails as well. It’s so delicious. The Restaurant is clean and intimate. Unhappy that Covid has us not being able to dine in so whoever did not experience dining in? I feel bad for you. Take a trip over to Kendejah and tell him that I sent you for the Goat pepper soup!

Service is bar non! Dougie and staff are very friendly and welcoming. The place is clean and feels like home. I love the atmosphere with the music playing in the background, giving you images of African culture and art. The food is delicious, everything on the menu is 🔥. You get a taste of Liberia in every bite and the portion sizes are filling. If you are looking for a destination for your taste buds, definitely make the visit. Four of us went to Kendejah a week ago on Sunday. None of us had ever had Liberian food before, but we ate and cook all sorts of ethnic food at home and with friends. We ordered okra with smoke chicken & turkey, collard greens with smoke chicken, Jallof rice with chicken stew, and plantains. OMG, all these dishes were VERY different from any food we had before. The tenderness of meat and subtlety of flavor in the stew /soup reminded me a little bit of Persian food. Tasty and not overly spiced. Smoke chicken and turkey had smoky flavor but too strong. Just perfect! Jallof rice has black beans and other vegetable mixed in and its very flavorful. The owner gave us the sauce that we can mix with any dish in case we like to add extreme spiciness to the dishes. He warned us to be careful with the sauce. He was right :-) You wont be disappointed with Kendejah and you will definitely have plenty to eat. We plan to go back there again in a month. Cant wait!

So I really enjoy East African food and have been eager to try West African for some time. Did the reseach and the reviews were promising.Overall, it was not a great experience today. Stars off for 3 reasons. (1) I asked for the vegetarian option and was given (and charged for) chicken, (2) the man taking my order walked away without giving me my receipt, then wondered why I was still at the door, and made a big deal about bringing me my food when i said i was coming to him (3) apart from not being able to eat the main entree, the rice&beans were SO BLAND. I was so disappointed with the entire meal. My friend got the goat soup and tried my chicken, which she also said wasnt good. She liked her stew though, and the plantains were made well. Ill give the place 1 more try but this was a very sad 1st impression, and i understand masks make hearing difficult, but it felt more like the man working the front just didnt listen.

First time having Liberian food and we were really impressed. The menu changes based on the day of the week, but a few items are available everyday. We got a bit of a history lesson from the owner, who explained the paintings of the men on the wall were the first 8 presidents of Liberia. All of them were originally US Citizens. Liberia is the only country in Africa that slaves returned to after being freed. This is why a lot of the food has influences from the South and Caribbean. Pretty much all dishes come with rice and beans and everything was truly fantastic!The best dish here is the oxtail stew. First time having oxtail and fell in love. The flavor of the stew with this tender meat was one of the best things I have ever tried. Also the Acheike Fish was fantastic. We also went for the chicken wings that had a very original sauce and flavor to them. Not everyone we came with was a fan, but I loved them!

I think they have a problem with consistency. First two times I ordered oxtails they were good I went in today to order oxtails I paid 27.50 and the oxtails were very very tough the juice was super thick like paste . I called in to let them know about it the lady on the phone said oh Im sorry, that was it .Customer service was poor . First time I came it was a lady working looks to be in her 30s who took my order she was quiet the only words she said to me was thank you when I left. Second time I came it was a guy with dread locks who took my order he was talking on the phone the whole time I was paying for my order he never got off the phone. I paid for my order as he was talking on the phone. I love eating at restaurants that are consistent in the way they cook. I made the decision I wont be eating here again .

I always love this place! Their food has always been delicious and satisfying. Theyre friendly and its always a nice vibe. But tonight they went above and beyond... I was driving home kind of late and called see if I could place an order. Even though it was just a few minutes before closing, they were able to put together and delicious oxtail with beans and rice and corn bread! It was so good and they were awesome for going the extra mile to fill an order, when they could have just close their doors for the night. Thank you! Cant wait to come back next girls nite!

Oh yeah this a new restaurant in the pelton plaza. I love certain types of African food and these guys have what I like. I was on my way to I tea when I got stopped by a young lady asking if I wanted to try a sample. Free food yep Im down where is it. Ha should of know they would get me. The samples were so yummy my ass ended getting a take out order. I ended up with the collard greens and rice and split pea. The portions are very generous so you will be stuffed because the flavors are so good you cant stop eating. I didnt stay inside to eat but they have plenty of seating. Next time I will stay a bit longer to enjoy the awesome service.

I ordered the Potato Greens and was very delicious. It carries a unique authentic flavor, blended with a generous portion of smoke turkey meat, soft and tender off the bone, and pouring it over the cup of rice, together mixed, was such an absolutely tasteful unforgettable meal. Its hard to explain, but I was able to bring some left overs home and shared it with my child. We both enjoyed it together, and truly admire this Liberian dish. I do plan on going back to this place, I call, The joy of eating.

I don’t know why people would rate this place as five stars. I bought cassava leaves and it was nothing but Salty bowl of partly green shredded leaves with two chunks of chicken breast and one turkey meat. Very very salty for 18$. To make matters worse they have the guts to charge one dollar for half a teaspoon of pepper sauce which by right is supposed to go with the meal. Poor customer service. Would not go there. Never .

Today I heard a man whom I know speak the Whole Truth say that there was a restaurant that had some good Ox tails. So I check it out and this was excellence eating. I made boiled okra and con-bread (not cornbread ) to go with the rice and beans. I slopped the gravey on top of con-bread and tore this meals to pieces. The tenderness and authenticity of flavoring was to die for!!!

Very sad to say, I didn’t care for it. I ordered oxtails with rice and beans and none of it had flavor. The oxtails were really small and then randomly I had 1 really big one so there was probably a total of 3 oxtails in my to go order. The rice and beans were really dry and flavorless. I had to put jalapeño in it to make it more spicy and give it a flavor. The gravy that the oxtail was in also had no flavor. Overall I just wanted something flavorful that would make me want to come back. Literally could have and should have made this at home.

I ordered the oxtail meal twice. The first time, it was only 2 big pieces, but the food was flavorful. Second time, there were majority of turkey meat in the meal, but I paid the price for an oxtail meal. So disappointing, especially after realizing that they gave me turkey meat mixed in with a very small piece of oxtail. Overall, the food was flavorful, but just dishonest food prep practices.

Went there with my vegetarian friend. Ordered a vegetarian rice. It came out with a pile of chicken on it. No biggie, mistake happens. Sent it back to the kitchen and a vegetarian version came out. Well guess what, its still got chunks of chicken on it. The waitress admitted that they just scooped away the chicken and put some vegetarian gravy on it. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Didnt want to make a scene so I ate must of that for my friend and then left. $17 for a vegetarian rice with chunks of chicken that my friend couldnt eat and this place claims to be vegetarian friendly? What a joke. Definitely wont come back again.

Very disappointing the oxtails were all fat I dont like to use the word nasty but the food taste very oily and like gruel. Seems like they just added tomatoe sauce to the rice not jollof rice its tomato rice. Im sure most people who come here are not returning customers.

This has to be the best restuarant Ive came across in years. Dougie the owner says he wants his customers to feel like your at your boys house and it feels just like that. Great job ! It is truly the most comfortable atmosphere to eat besides my own home. And Dougie makes you feel like youve been best buddies for years. As for the food .. I will quote Dougie again. go ahead and order anything on the menu,you will be happy and I always am ! Ok I am very particular about where i eat b/c as a small business owner I do my best to support other small businesses.So the 1st thing that needs to change is the PIC of the oxtail plate on the website! B/c the oxtails DONT look nothing like that! Very deceptive. I ordered the oxtail plate and was told by the nice waitress that it would be a few minutes cuz they ran out and was finishing another batch. Well sorry to say they didnt finish the batch cuz I got a neck bone and 2-3 very little baby oxtails smothered in a gravy sauce that I didnt care for at all. I would have respected them more if they would have just told me they were out of oxtails and gave me the option to order something else. That was bad service especially for a 1st time patron. Im not sure if I will go back there but I do wish them all the success for their restaurant. Blessings

Really, really satisfying food. Plantains were fresh and hot and just what my friend and I wanted. The potato greens (and spinach and smoked turkey and chicken) over rice (they kindly substituted jollof rice for a reasonable upcharge) were amazingly delicious. Friendly and knowledgeable and fast. Dont waste your money. My dinner was about 90% white rice. The other portion was 3 bones with almost no meat on them. My wifes dish was even worse. At the advice of the check bayarea tv show, I visited this restaurant with my lady, nice little place, little sitting area by the tv for those who are waiting for their to - go orders, with music videos playing etc. We sat in and ordered, and I have to say I was disappointed, Im from the Caribbean born and bred and extreme special attention is paid to the flavors in the food, and I have to say, it wasnt pay here, my meal was on both spectrums of flavor, one thing was very bland and the other was too salty and lacking in seasoning and I dont mean salt and pepper, the plantains werent ripe for frying so they were hard, dry and not sweet, would I go back? Ive been trying to visit this restaurant for over a year. Finally, my husband and I went there today Sep 22nd to celebrate my birthday dinner. I wasnt disappointed I had the Orka Sauce, great flavor (but I wanted to feel just a little crunch of the okra) with the smoked turkey & chicken, Joliof Rice, which is excellent with the Oxtails (hmmm, oh that gravy), and then those Fried Collard Greens, out of sight!!!Our server Mimee, give this girl a raise she was extremely helpful assisting us. She told us how the food was prepared, her recommendation for first timers, and how different selections complemented one another.
