Today, I went out for dinner with a group of friends. We know this place used to be a Japanese supermarket, and now is a Taiwanese cuisine restaurant. As soon as we walked in, we noticed the wallpaper of Ximending (西門町)on the wall, indicating it’s a TaiwaneseI’m restaurant. We were immensely impressed with the food during our first visit. All of us, being Taiwanese, absolutely loved it.The stinky tofu (臭豆腐)had a strong fermented flavor and tasted delightful, especially when paired with the house-made pickled vegetables. The popcorn chicken (鹽酥雞)was tender, quite large, and paired with basil, making it a Taiwanese classic dish.Additionally, we ordered Taiwanese stir-fried noodles (台式炒麵)and pork intestine and pig blood stew(五更腸旺). These are dishes we often eat back in Taiwan. The stir-fried noodles tasted just right, with the perfect noodle texture, accompanied by strips of meat and cabbage which added to a great flavor. The stew with pork intestines and pig’s blood paired with pickled cabbage reminded me of the taste I had experienced back in Taipei. We also ordered cabbage with bacon (高麗菜炒培根)where is a great combination of this two dishes, as well as veggie eggs (菜脯蛋) which gave us a great taste and last order was Hakka stir-fry (客家小炒)where the pairing of dried tofu, celery, pork strips, and squid was spot-on and felt light and refreshing to the palate. We highly recommend everyone to come and give it a try.

This is now a Taiwanese / Chinese restaurant that serves both snacks and entrees. Their food is really good and portions are generous. I highly recommend the salt and pepper chicken (did not take a picture). Their bento box are priced between $14 - $16 and comes with 1 braised egg, braised pork over rice, vegetables and 1 stinky tofu(not that stinky), in addition to your choice of meat. The service is very good too, the servers are attentive and polite.

As others have said this place is no longer a Japanese restaurant and market. Taiwanese/Chinese restaurant with snack and meal items. We only ordered the popcorn chicken to-go. The restaurant was empty and quiet. I assume most of their business comes from the kung fu studio and tutoring center. Not a place to go out of your way to visit. Menu looked simple. No items really stuck out to me. The popcorn chicken was good but not worth going back for.

2nd (and will be the last) visit, wasn’t impressed on our first, but decided collectively to give it one last chance, was ultimately disappointed. Held back on posting this until I discovered a fragment of a steel dish scrubber in my soup ( as shown in pic)Called to order for pick up, was told 20 min eta. Arrived at 20 mins, order not ready and waited another 15 minutes (total time ~35 mins), there was 1 table with 2 customers, food already served. I failed to see why my order took significantly longer than the eta providedI had 2 soups + oyster tapioca pancakes (they had “tapioca” in the name for unknown reason), as the lady carried out the much delayed order in one single plastic bag, I could see my soups have already spilled leaving us with just 70% of the soup remaining in the bowl( checked when I got home), lady brought the spilled bag back into the kitchen which took another 5 minutes minimum. Came back out with my soups STILL in one big bag, but this time soups were individually bagged, failing to comprehend that the culprit is putting both soups in a single big bag that tilts as you lift the handle. At the end of the day, more soup was visibility spilled as she carried it out again, as I simply didn’t have the luxury to wait for another failed attempt to fix the downward spiraling situation, I grabbed my order and walked out frustrated, only to have their strong-springged door hit me in the behind on my way out.Frustrations were real, total time spent upon arrival = 45mins (2.25x the initially communicated via phone), received 70% soup for consumption, had a mess to clean up at home as bowls were soaked in soup, food wasn’t anything to be remembered for, until I found the steel fragment which could’ve ended badly had I not notice it.Will NOT return, I miss the Japanese restaurant from before.

Ive been going here off and on while staying in the area and the food is awesome, the staff are as friendly and welcoming as you can get, and I love the little Japanese deli and market that are connected. The chicken karaage, sashimi combo, chirashi, and tempura were all very, very good. The prices are probably the best weve seen for Japanese food of this quality in the Bay Area.

One of the few Japanese markets in the east bay. Sometimes I come here to get some of their frozen unagi, and snacks. This time it was to eat their hot foods, which are really good.More food stuff @vin.foodjournal

This used to be a Japanese bento takeout place with a really cute supermarket. They demolished the market and replaced the food section with a Chinese / Taiwanese restaurant. This happened about two months ago.The food was passable. Not bad but nothing impressive. Slightly on the expensive side, which I dont feel like a good value given the horrible construction zone-ish atmosphere. The service is what you would expect from a typical Chinese joint, the old lady didnt know how to keep professional boundaries and keep asking you inappropriate personal questions making the dining experience really awkward. There was another waitress but shes too new and didnt even know how the menu works. I pointed out that the menu had the identical item listed twice with different prices. It was a mess. The most humiliating part is that they kept a small section of Chinese-fusion-Japanese bento on the menu just so that they can keep calling themselves Kitayama. I would give them one star until they do a proper change of concept.

Although this place used to be really good they have since rebranded into a taiwanese resteraunt. The food i got was pretty awful for the price. I payed $16 for a fried pork bento box and the vegtables were straight up inedible with the amount of salt they put on there. The pork came with the bone attached which took up like 30% of the portion. I used to go there buy some dinner then get some japanese snacks in the shop but im probably never coming back here again. Its a shame they rebranded because this place used to be good.
