I’m from out of town and Modan Artisanal Ramen is my must have in LA. I love the spicy tonkotsu broth. Amazing food!!!

I was pleasantly surprised by their poke ramen. Noodles have kale as an ingredient, and they are more like soba noodles. They cook the noodles just right so they are firm and have a great texture. I cant stand soggy overcooked noodles, so they were great.It comes w salmon and tuna poke, w kabocha pumpkin chips. Kale chips added a nice flavor and texture too.It was hard to forego ramen and order cold served noodles on a cold day, but it was totally worth it.Our server was friendly and attentive. Our food came out very quickly. We were very happy customers.
M.A. Ramen offers good ramen and broth. This little gem tucked in a small plaza on Fair Oaks by the 110. Staff are friendly and competent. Interior atmosphere is chill and its well lit. Prices are fair. Ample parking is available. Overall, i recommend Modan Ramen to anyone craving for a good ramen.

Fantastic ramen! Came with the family and were seated promptly. The place fills up quickly.We ordered a variety of ramen, nearly one of each offered. Also, a poke salad, fried green beans, and gyoza.Everything was cooked to perfection and seasoned very nicely. The service was attentive and the environment was clean.It was a great first time ramen eating experience for my mom. She loved it.Highly recommend :) and will definitely be back.
Service was very friendly and prompt. Food was flavorful, fresh, and delicious! We came in with a large group of people and the food came out very quickly and they split up our tickets with no issue. 5/5 stars, will be coming back and recommend for hearty broths and the vegan/GF kale noodles.

This place is close to everything yet never too busy. The quality is great and you have to have the spicy edamame here, it is better than any I’ve had just about anywhere. Prices are a little high for the location, but it’s a treat for sure.
Very good broth. Good noodles. I was eating as a delivery guy was dropping off fresh ingredients so you know they spend the time to prep the cabbage on the pork taco. To the crisp squash chips on their basic salad.I had to stop myself..not because I was full. But I didnt want the experience to end. Great wait staff too. They didnt look at me sideways lugging a stroller into the close space. I did decide to eat outside though.
This place is great! The menu is easy to navigate, straightforward, and you wont be confused with having too many options, which is something I really appreciate. I got the Spicy menu option and it was delicious! The provide ample portions with generous servings of meat (if that is something youre looking for).The restaurant itself is cozy, casual, and has a relaxed environment. There is no need to dress up before eating here. The staff are friendly and attentive, but not too intensely attentive where it can get annoying. I feel this level of service is perfect for a laid back restaurant like this.Lastly, the prices are completely reasonable and you definitely get your moneys worth. Overall I would highly recommend this place if youre in the mood for some noodles or a great salad!
Had the Spicy Modan tonight and an order of Gyoza and a side of chili oil. It was so fresh and so delicious, I decided to just eat it in the car, enjoy the evening air, rather than go home and sit at my table. Ill get some pics next time, since eating it in the car wasnt as pretty as being there to enjoy a meal. Gotta say the staff is absolutely an ease to work with. Ive been here at least 12 times in the past year.

Ive been to over 100 different Ramen restaurants from Portland, Oregon all the way down to Las Vegas, and this quaint little spot tucked away in South Pasadena is tied for #1 with Tomi Ramen in Las Vegas. The inside is less flashy and showboaty than most other places Ive been to, instead focusing on giving you an extremely high quality meal cooked and served to perfection. None of the smoke and mirrors to distract you from the cheap ingredients and microwave pack noodles they serve up at a lot of other places Ive been to with a bunch of expensive decorations and fancy lighting. I had the Tonkotsu Black, and let me tell you the broth was like a silk blanket of complex flavors each distinct yet harmonizing perfectly, while the braised pork chashu melted in my mouth to join in the rising tempo of this symphony of ingredients. Alongside the Ramen, I also decided to try the spider slider. The rich flavor of fresh greens with the light briney flavor of crab coupled with the sweet kiss of the bun and the soft, almost fluffy sensation in the mouth as you bite into this masterpiece and chew...it was otherworldly. Im pretty sure I mumbled the words So Good at least 50 times while I was eating here hahaha. If you never try the food at this place then I feel sorry for you
Poke rice is delicious and my friend like his ramen too.
Its aight. It gets really crowded so I recommend visiting before 6 for dinner. Parking is limited too.The ramen doesnt taste authentic, but the flavor is good. I like their spicy tuna bowl better. The appetizers are okay but not great.Sometimes the staff gives you the evil eye when its busy. If they need the table just say something instead of the hard look.
Came here on a Friday evening. Was about a 15-20 minute wait at 7:30pm. The place is not that big, so volume is key for them. The ramen is pretty darn good. I ordered the Black and the broth tasted a little rich (with lots of garlic.. yum), and delicious if youre into that. Also got the pork combo set, which is basically a really tasty rice bowl with pork, and salad.
Sure the wait time is not too pleasant, but if there wasnt a line of people, then you would question if this restaurant was good at all! I went to Bristol Farms to get a snack over fears of a long wait. I wish I didnt do that because we sat down within half an hour. Ooops. The inside is just as cozy and small as the outside waiting area. Nice hipster ambiance too.I ordered the Spicy bowl. The broth was slightly overly seasoned, but the perfect amount of spiciness. The char siu tasted great, if not a bit less tender than other places. The ramen was plentiful and had great texture. My favorite part was the egg with the soft and gooey yolk.Service was great and pretty prompt, but that parking lot is sure tiny! Would definitely come back to try the other bowls.
Been here just under 10 times. Best ramen I have ever had.My favorite is the “black” w pork. I like lots of veggies so add arugula. I tell them to go a little light on salt which they actually do well every time. Their service and attention to detail blows me away.Got to try the Brussel sprouts too.I’m addicted to the dishes I mentioned above. I’ll be back within the week no doubt.

Really great ramen. The spicy ramen had a good kick to it, but wasnt overwhelming. Great flavors throughout with the mushrooms, green onion, seaweed, and delicious savory broth. Star of the show was the chicken wings though. 4 come in an order, and they were amazing. Wish we had just got 2-3 orders of those instead.
So, I have never liked ramen... until I came here! Their miso ramen is the bomb. I get it with the tofu as protein option, and I order the combo which comes with a fresh salad, and a rice bowl with protein options on that too (spicy tuna for me). My 2 yr-old loved his dads modan ramen. Excellent flavors, beautifully presented esp. for pick-up/take-out.

Small place so definitely plan ahead if you’re going during a meal rush time. Everything is so tasty here, the broth, the noodles, the meat options, and the appetizers. Service is quick, and everyone is quite friendly.

Its small and cute with modern decor.The menu has some ramen options, appetizers, and rice bowls.I ordered the hot green tea, which they didnt refill. It was good tea and you can tell that they use actual matcha powder. So unfortunately, I thought the service was mediocre for a Wednesday night. It wasnt busy at all.As for the ramen, I ordered their traditional tonkotsu ramen. Its called Modan Ramen that included chashu pork, green onion, wood ear mushroom, nori (seaweed), half a soft-boiled egg and black garlic truffle oil.The broth was a little salty but I enjoyed the subtle hint of the truffle oil. I thought the noodles were just ok. The chashu pork was different. They are thicker slices but grilled.Overall, I think its a good place to get your ramen fix if youre in the area and dont want to drive to SGV, Little Tokyo or Sawtelle and bother with parking or long lines.
Very tasty, well priced ramen. We went for lunch and enjoyed the Modan, Vegi and Black Modan ramen dishes. We also tried the curry fries and the brussel sprouts. If you like brussel sprouts, this starter dish is delicious. The ramen was fresh and well cooked. I ordered mine spicy and it was just about right. Highly recommend this place. Parking sucks because of Bristol Farms.

Super tasty. Good prices. A single bowl filled me up! Great flavor and shows up to your table fast. Not a lot of seething but if you happen to get a spot service is fast. In and out in 30ish minutes. Oh also great music. Not everybodys type but its nice and chill.
I ordered a big steaming bowl of hot liquid with some noodles and other stuff in it. They brought me a glass of ice water then I ordered the hot green tea. Everything was great. The bathroom is conveniently located across the parking lot at the Bristol farms super market.
Ive come here a couple of times and have had an excellent experience each time. The service is great and the selection of food is Amazing! I was very shocked how fast our food came out, our appetizers were out in about 5 minutes and our ramen came out in about 10!
Ramen! Not a lot else to say about it, food was good, portions were good. I had the spicy and it wasnt actually that spicy? I want to emphasize that the food isnt bad but its not very remarkable. I also dont really know what makes it Artisanal.On the whole its a 6/10, nothing special and decent food if you need to eat.
Modan bowl was so flavorful and delicious! I also had roasted Brussels Sprouts which were divine. OMG I could have eaten three bowls of those since they were so good!
Great tasting Ramen. Their iteration is based on addition of truffle to the broth! If you havent tried yet, you are missing out! Some other great ithems on the menue as well. A small, casual restaurant with big signature taste.
Their house Modan Ramen is delicious. They have a slightly different take on cha shu as their pork is grilled. I highly recommend the Spicy Tuna Crisps. Its a small place so expect a wait.
Modan Artisanal Ramen is a small ramen joint in South Pasadena that has a well rounded menu of ramen, appetizers, bowls, salads and appetizers.Food:1) Curry fries - Fries with curry and cheese. Youre supposed to mix it as soon as it arrives to your table so that the cheese melts from the heat of the curry. Its delicious, but it does get soggy if you take your time eating it.2) Black ramen - You can choose between pork or chicken. Its the modan ramen with black garlic oil. I love garlic flavor so any opportunity to add more garlic to a dish Im gonna do it. First time going and food was absolutely delicious!! We ate ramen in Japan and this place was as close as authentic gets. Broth was delicious and service was great! We live one hour and a half away and we will be sure to be back!
If you are clamoring for ramen, this is the place to go. The price is very reasonable. Seating is very limited to go during off times. Stay clear of traditional lunch and dinner hours.The chef here has a heavy hand when it comes to salt. Be prepared.
Theres almost always a wait around dinner time - that should tell you something right there. My favorite is the Spicy ramen, with an add of the Black Truffle Oil; my gal and I usually also split the Brussels sprouts (and I HATE Brussels sprouts, but love theirs).
My cousin told me this place was 5 star ramen and that I had gone to a 3 star place earlier on my trip over. He did not disappoint ! Definitely 5 stars ! Super delicious !Wish I tipped more but it was towards the end of my trip and I was running out of money :/
The food was awesome and deserved 5 stars but we had to wait longer than everyone else including a couple parties after us. Thus 4 stars. The cha siu pork was out of the world delicious!
In SouthPas we have lot of restaurants that are great and expensive. Quite a few joints are not so great and expensive. A fair number of meh and inexpensive. Modan joins the (count em on one hand) few places that are great and inexpensive. We ordered:Shoyu (Soy-based) ramen (delicious, but you can order more noodles which we did)Spicy Tuna Don (So nice we ordered it twice)Karage Wings (deep-fried goodness)Brussel Sprouts (perfect)When they first opened their portion sizes were a little small, but fairly priced. Now they have increased their sizes without increasing their price. This restaurant is by far the best bargain in South Pas.
Best ramen in Los Angeles. The broth is fantastic, the noodles are firm and delightful to chew, and the variety of things in the ramen bowls are great. Fried kale. Fried onions. Peppers. Black garlic oil. Ive had ramen all over Los Angeles and this place is my favorite. Definitely better than Tatsunoya Ramen in Old Town.
Food is delicious! My only complaint is the dinning area is small and they force you to sit close to other visitors. Maybe its a cultural thing but in America we like our elbow space.👍
Great ramen and service. Not your traditional Japanese flavoring. But the quality of the broth and toppings are good and unique in its own way.
I love the amount of chashu they give you its huge and tasty. Beware coming in during dinner time there might be a wait and its a little hard to find if youre driving by. Its in the Bristol farm parking lot.
Good food. Just wish the tables werent so close to each other. Inevitably conversations from your table start getting feedback from neighboring diners. Not that I have many skeletons in my closet but Im not getting paid to entertain.

YUM! I read about Modan on LA Eater and bookmarked it to try. I came here on Labor Day Monday around 1:30pm and we were seated right away.FOOD:-modan ramen - went with their classic tonkotsu ramen and man it is DELISH! Broth is rich without being salty and you get that sticky-lipped feeling that good tonkotsu broths will give you. Not too fatty, the noodles are firm and eggy, THAT CHASIU is barbecued and you get a great flavor! Half a soft boiled egg included as well.- chicken karaage - disappointing. Overfried, chicken was super dry, no flavor and too much crunch, not enough meat.SERVICE:Friendly and fairly quick. Water is served in mason jars (with handles) but our karaage strangely came out after our ramen did lol.PARKING/VENUE:Parking is easily found, Modan is in a small plaza with the Bristol Farms. Venue is small, and very hipster! Industrial bulbs, wooden bench seating, and those light-up marquee letters spelling M.A.R.NO RESTROOMS.

The most authentic ramen Ive had since Yokohama. The spicy tongatsu is my favorite. Also recommend the Brussels sprouts. Friendly service too!
I would have given Modan three stars (space would have to be better for doue stars) but there is one major problem. They use MSG. Its too bad because there are few good soups joints in the area but I cannot in good conscious ingest this nefarious ingredient. Oh please make a nonMSG version Modan will you?

Delicious flavorful ramen and appetizers. The staff seemed a bit unorganized, we were asked numerous times if our order was taken, but the food was delicious and the service wasnt bad at all.

Inconsistent. The brats is always good but the soup comes out way too hot. pork is sometimes very tough and very fatty, and unable to chew.
For a place in South Pasadena it is a perfect ramen place even though you are so close to Little Tokyo and some other ramen places. Small place so you will be waiting especially on those cold days in LA.

This is my go to for vegetarian ramen. They have a vegi miso broth that it very good. I went a couple weeks ago when it was 100°+ outside because I love it so much.

2023-07-01 22:23:11I found this restaurant on my way home yesterday when I couldnt find a place to park in Little Tokyo. I ordered the spicy pork bone noodle soup and it was gone in no time. The eggs inside are very tasty, there are two large pieces of pork, and the soup is also delicious. Its just too much for girls, I cant finish it all. The price is still a bit expensive, 20 dollars for a bowl after tip and tax.

Nowadays they have two lunch combo options and those options are pretty good as well. The staffs are very kind and the inside is clean. I definitely recommend this place!

We opted for curry fries, spider sliders, and spicy tuna bowl to share, and I liked the spider sliders the most. As to the ramen, good portion! The broth was surprisingly good, it was rich and flavorful. Chashu was well-cooked, not melt in your mouth but flavor-wise, it was good. Downside? I wish they could give more toppings. All in all, good overall flavors!

2022-11-02 23:15:32The ramen here is pretty good. We got the regular tonkatsu and a black. Both were very rich and flavorful. Service was good as well. The only issue is there are no bathrooms. I had to use the bathroom at the Bristol farms across the parking lot. Its not far but, its such an inconvenience when a restaurant has no on site bathroom.

Got the tonkatsu modan bowl with chashu. HUGE servings and lots of pork unlike most ramen places. Noodles were well-made. Reminds me of the ramen in Japan; my top five ramen places! Prices are also so fair, $17 for the bowl

2018-10-05 22:28:09This place is absolutely delicious. It’s great having a miso based vegetarian ramen option. It can also be vegan really easily (vegan noodles). We tried the veggie ramen + an egg, and the “most popular” brussel sprout appetizer. Both were great! It’s reasonably priced, too. I’ll absolutely be coming back.

2019-02-25 06:51:44Place was recommended by a friend. We tried the black and modan ramen. Great taste. Good portions. Even better prices. Also, recommend their brussel sprouts. Its a popular dish served with aoili sauce. Went on a Sunday night around 7pm and it was quite busy - cant imagine what peak Friday or Saturday nights would be like! If youre in South Pasadena, definitely a place to give a look to on these cold nights or for a satisfying ramen fix.

2018-05-31 03:43:26Some of the best ramen Ive had, it agrees with my pallette I suppose. Ive been getting the spicy kimchee and its wonderful. So flavorful. I always think Im not going to finish it, then I do. No regrets though. Its too good to regret.
