A nice venue.Pros:really nice area outside with a pop-up bar.Clean.Friendly staff.Cons:Needs more bathrooms.They let patrons in after the show started.Parking was a little challenging because of the construction.
A relatively small, intimate theater. My first time there... Watched a performance of Sumo. No matter where you sit, youll get a good view of the stage.
Love this venue! We just saw The Outsiders here and it was a phenomenal performance... absolutely wonderful and not a bad seat in the house! We were in the middle back row and we didnt miss anything.I would recommend getting there a few minutes early, since at the moment, you have to park a short walk away. The shuttles are quick and constant however it does add a little extra time.
Went for Hunter Thompson. I really enjoyed it although I generally have a hard time with musicals!
We came to the La Jolla Playhouse for the second to last showing of The Garden.Fantastic play and excellent venue. Outside of the stellar performances, I was mainly impressed by LJPs commitment to public safety with their COVID safety protocols. I felt safe and well taken care of the entire time I was at the facility. I also appreciated the free parking and shuttles that have been set up from the UCSD parking lot. It made the area easier to navigate given the current construction occurring in the LJP former lot.
Nice, cozy venue. All the seats are good, we were almost to the back on the side and still an excellent view.It was raining when we went and the lobby is not big enough for a full house, its meant to spill outside, I think, so that was a bit rough, but I imagine its great when people can mingle outside, take a snack outside, etc.If youll need the restroom at intermission, go straight there. The line is too long :(Parking is easy and there is a very obvious shuttle if you dont want to walk.
First time to the La Jolla Playhouse. I really like this small and intimate theater. It provides a good view of the stage for everyone.The theater is really easy to find. Currently there is construction going on nearby so one has to park in farther garage and take a shuttle.We saw a musical named “BHANGIN’ IT:A BANGIN’ NEW MUSICAL” with upbeat music and was treated to a vibrant bhangra dance at the end. It has a plot that many teenagers can identify with.
This is a gem of a theatre. Not too big, not too small. Plenty of legroom and not a bad seat in the house. Just saw Bhangin It on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Really fun and great for the whole family.
Popular venue for stage productions.Currently, parking is a problem. But there are shuttles from/to other parking on the UCSD campus.

The intimacy of this venue cant be beat. There isnt a bad seat in the house! The show sound quality is amazing here! Love the first-class parking shuttle service, and the drivers are so welcoming and friendly.
My wife and I went to see a play there but unfortunately we couldnt stay for it because she wasnt feeling well. But that night, they were partnered with the Gary Sinise foundation. They held a military night. They rolled out the red carpet for us. It was an unexpected treat. Cant wait to go back again.

My husband and I had such a great time at the theater. We saw The Coast Starlight and it was so amazing. The actors were great, the script was great, and the staff and everyone else were great too. I will definitely come back.

This is a great little theatre, the acoustics are fantastic and the seats are comfortable with ample leg room. The shows are very good. I love getting to see a show that is there with plans to get that show to Broadway!
Phenomenal theater 🎭 through and through from the sound and lights to the space and stage. Fit for the most prodigious productions down to the simplest solo. All of the staff are knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous. Ive seen many shows here the most recent was Fly...this theater will transport you to never never land or any other imaginable or unimaginable place!

We watched Kiss My Aztec at the Weiss Theater. We dont attend plays often, but thoroughly enjoyed our experience!! Its a smaller theater, which is good because there are no bad seats in the house. We sat in the front row (for a very affordable price) and even got to interact with the actors. Loved it.
Beautiful theatre complex on the University of Calif, San Diego campus in upscale beach community of La Jolla. High-quality production values, top-notch experience...great Asian fusion restaurant called James Place on complex. Takes about 2 hours from L.A. on a weekday. Definitely, worth the drive.

A lovely theatre for a matinee! This is one of the many ways to enjoy the beautiful la Jolla coastline.. I reserve the 5th star until theyre done with construction and figure out parking. I hope the permanent solution is not a shuttle-I see some of those little ladies having trouble negotiating the steep steps on those buses.
La Jolla Playhouse is a great regional theater that produces some really great shows. Recently, I saw the production of the musical Fly and was blown away by the sets, actors, and all the flying! The productions at La Jolla Playhouse are very professional and high quality, telling amazing stories.
The Outsiders musical was wonderful. All the young actors/singers were great.Show deserves to go to Broadway

Would highly recommend checking out a play here! Parkings a good 5-10min walking distance from the actual theater. The seating was wondering and there was an intermission of 15min which was perfect! Theater is well equipped and they had snacks and alcohol. Staff was very accommodating and friendly. I would recommend checking out To the yellow house

Well lucky you my friend, The La Jolla playhouse maybe one of the finest theaters on the West coast period. I know thats Saying A lot. Do yourself a favor enjoy a night out & support one of Americas finest theaters right here in Americas finest city! I recently saw The Outsiders there, =my wife and i were completely blOwn away. Top to bottom WAS INCREDIBLE. THE WRITING, SINGING, (YES THE CLASSIC BY S.E. HINTON IS NOW A MUSICAL)THE ACTING, THE CHOREOGRAPHY, THE LIGHTING... ALL were EXTRAORDINARY! The lighting Was just top notch I mean like next level. We are fortunate enough to have this little gem of a theater IN our backyard. The closest thing to Broadway Youre likely to find west of the Mississippi. If youre on the fence just go, go enjoy a night obut take someone you love. Dine At One of La Jollas many great restaurants, then go enjoy a performance that will leave you in awe and youre supporting the arts too. SEE THE OUTSIDERS. My first time back since March 2020 was this June. The usual parking lot is a construction zone, so they moved the parking to another part of campus off Gillman...its easy to miss. The free shuttle to the theater runs until 15 mins after curtain and as long as it takes after the show. Masks are strongly encouraged, though no longer mandatory.
We saw a great play called The Garden. They have a new parking procedure since the old parking lot next to the Playhouse is now gone due to a new structure is being built in its place. Its a longer walk from where you now can park. They offer a shuttle bus that works very well. Very nice overall experience.
We have been members for 25 years and it is the most wonderful theatre in San Diego. Their plays are so innovative and outstanding that many end up in New York and London.
We watched Kristina Wong - Sweatshop Overlord. A hilarious and yet also deeply serious one woman show about her mask making escapades during the COVID-19 pandemic. Brilliant! Thought Provoking. Emotional!

Watched As You Like It IMMEDIATELY fell in love with the joyous cast! My favorite rendition of the play, I may be a biased gay. But whats not to love about this playful production. Everything is chefs kiss. Music, muah. Lighting, Muah. Set, muah. Hilcrest go support this show! You will not disappoint

Very nice modern theatre. Excellent acoustics. Seats relatively comfortable and roomy. Good selection of drinks and snacks during intermission. More than adequate, very clean bathroom. Wonderful restaurant very close by. Wear comfortable shoes, parking is abundant but an uphill schlep after the play.

We went to see Fly tonight and it was AMAZING. The production was so well done with costumes that were so elaborate and professional. The set was impeccable with the transitions being smooth. The actors were incredible, perfect timing on the comedy and beautiful voices all around. This is one production that will go places. Im looking forward to seeing Fly on the Broadway stage.

The show was amazing went on a field trip with my school and friends it was awesome I loved it the show was very entertaining and the songs were amazing their voices were beautiful and we got to meet the cast they were so nice.
If youre coming to see a show here, see if you can squeeze in a trip to the strip just down ten mins down the road from the theatre where you can see breathtaking views of the cove from places like Eddie Vs . You wont be disappointed. Loved the theatre and its surroundings. Easy to park and walk up. Lovely staff and look forward to coming back soon from LA.

Great venue. 3 separate theaters, each with its own character. Pushes the edge sometimes, but there are always some really great new experiences. Many of which move on to Broadway.
I felt that To The Yellow House has casting choices that are unrealistic in an effort to be inclusive and show diversity. Vincent Van Gogh was a gaunt figure with a pale complexion, reddish hair and a reddish beard. The actor in this role is highly skilled and accomplished in his profession, but the fact that he has dark hair, dark skin and a stocky build was distracting to me. I experienced the same distracted feeling watching Vincents brother and cohorts knowing that in real life these people were not Black, Asian or Latino. The acting was excellent.
Spacious but intimate spaces. Great place for new shows before they hit Broadway and other larger venues. Have seen Hasan minhajs experiment there as well as the musical Fly.
Recently had the opportunity to enjoy the production of Disneys Freaky Friday the musical and it was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our experience; from the free samples of beer (Thirsty Thursday) to the fact that there isnt a bad seat in the house. I will definitely plan to purchase tickets for future plays and musicals. Convenient parking is a plus.
Have seen mostly winners along with a few clunkers. Some big time Broadway Shows started here. Parking too far away, but usually free on weekends. Comfortable seats with good sightlines. Park like setting.

We took a field trip here in elementary school. The staff there taught us all how to be more confident, outgoing, and that art is something that we all have in us. Great place to bring your kids if they want to break out of their shells and become more artistic.

Ive lived here 32 years and this was my first time at the La Jolla Playhouse. Im a creature of habit and go to the Globe and the Civic Theatre (Broadway San Diego.) Intimate, charming theatre with lots of ample parking. Will be back!
Great theater. there is a restaurant directly next to the theatre for dinner before the show. there are two theatres. a smaller more intimate stage and the original larger stage. the new smaller one is nice with great view points all around, however it only has one entrance/exit up a large ramp which is strange and annoying while exiting.
Accurate fast paced story of trying to fit a square peg(Diana) into a round hole (British Royal Family). Highly entertaining but also sad to be reminded of her remarkable life.Brilliant. Fun filled. Best I seen for a long time
We went last Saturday to see the Cambodian Rock Band & it is the best play we have seen at this venue.Enjoyed this play that combines the dark and sad history of Cambodia in the 70s, an excellent emotional plot, a little humor, and rock concert.
Clean and spacious, but also allows you to see the stage well and feels cozy, in a way.For Hazan Minhaj’s show, they had a food truck to eat at beforehand as well as a pouch to store mobile devices during the show. Everything went smoothly and well.
We love the comfort. We love the professional productions. Saw SIDEWAYS and thought it was terrific and wouldnt doubt if it winds up on Broadway. We were here last year to see Glengary Glen Ross which we did not like. GREAT ASSET to the Community

The current production of Cambodian Rock Band is TONY worthy. Fantastic cast tells a musical tale of the secrets we keep to protect those we love. A stellar cast weaves a tale that will make you examine what others suffer in war. Beyond moving.
I always love going here for there yearly plays that they have. It is the perfect way to pass the time and have fun watching real people do on the spot acting. Always impressed by this venue and they always keep everything professional and clean. I would highly recommend going here.
Love this particular theatre. Besides having some very avant-garde plays, the casts talents seems to be a very high caliber. Never seen a production there that I havent liked. Often the Productions tend to make you think which is a good thing for the audience. Close proximity to the freeways and ample nearby parking.

Situated on the campus of UCSD, this top notch regional theater is beautiful and comfortable. The consistency of any theater is going to be up and down due to the nature of theater and the fact we deal in a subjective medium but La Jolla does great work with nice design elements. Check it out if you can.

We have been subscribers for years, ever since Tommy. LJP is a great place to see shows before they go to Broadway, more so than the Globe. Jersey Boys, 700 Sundays, Memphis, and many more are Tony worthy. You get a strange play every once in a while, like Blood Wedding, or Luck, Pluck,& Virtue (which I actually liked), but thats better than boring. Subscribers get parking vouchers for weekday shows.
We really enjoy our theater experiences at the La Jolla Playhouse. My husband and I have been season subscribers for at least 15 years. If you are a teacher ask about the educator subscription. You can just buy tickets to shows you want to see, but there are perks for subscribers like free parking and having the same seats that generally get better every year you subscribe.Pro-tip: The large theater has a large bathroom, but the doors swing shut and people think those stalls are occupied when they are really empty. Knowing this can make a difference during the intermission rush. Its worth checking the floor for feet if the line is growing.

Have been to many plays here, always fun. My favorite thing about it is that there is a huge ladies room, for such a small and intimate place! They were thinking ahead! Light snacks available before the show, drinks also.
Last night we saw Hundred Days. It was awful The plot was simplistic the singing was unintelligible the music was louder than any OSHA rule would allow for a working situation. We have been to the La Jolla Playhouse over the last ten years or more many times and have always been impressed by the quality of the presentations and the skill of the performers. Last night was was pathetic. Please raise the level of performance again.

Went here to see 100 Days. I found the venue to be intimate in the Forum Theater. The lighting and sound were great.

It was wonderful to be whisked away to a different place & time to imagine the experiences of others, to consider the reality of the less obvious aspects of the social dynamics that influenced the choices and lives of well-known people.Fantastic all around - kudos to the entirety of the cast & crew, production team, the playwrite and other creators as well as the venue itself (including easy breezy parking just down the hill, complete with shuttle service!)

2023-10-09 14:29:03I love this place! I treated myself to season tickets this time & have enjoyed 2/3 plays SO much — like NYC quality for way better prices. They strive to do quality and socially cutting edge pieces- at least this season. I have been very happily surprised. I also got to do one Talkback Tuesday where I saw the show (Is it thursday yet?, which was my favorite so far), and talk with the dancer & creators of it! So nourishing for the soul, artistic, creative part of myself!

2023-10-02 23:02:40Parking can be a challenge at UCSD, but certainly appreciated that parking passes at the parking structure are provided. While a free shuttle is available to take us to the theatre, we usually opt to walk up the hill to the theatre.We saw the world premiere of Sumo. While it was an interesting play about the sport, people & rituals, we thought that the play needs a bit of modification to make the storylines cohesive.

2022-04-01 02:24:36What a great venue! Seating is very comfortable and spacious. The staff was kind and accommodating. The campus was clean and beautiful. Parking is tricky with the construction happening, but staff was very patient and helped us find our way. (Google hasnt gotten the memo about the closed roads due to construction.)

2023-10-01 05:06:09Incredible talent today at Hunter S. Thompson afternoon show. Omg! This cast was amazing. My son is a huge fan of HST and I was ecstatic to be able to share this experience with him. We loved it!!!

2023-10-04 03:38:06The hunter s thompson crew was amazing! The venue is beautiful. The vendors outside, Eric and his wife were so welcoming and helpful.Follow the signs to the parking lot, park on the 4th floor, and a bus will shuttle you to the venue.Thanks La Jolla playhouse!

2023-10-22 23:13:30Came for The Outsiders with my wife as returning patrons. The theater has single-level theatee seating, which we sat towards the back next to the aisle; there are no center aisles. The seats were very comfortable with a lot of leg room. Didnt have to stand and be awkward to let people pass through. The bathroom was clean, and had a average number of toilets. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Parking is off-site, but a shuttle is provided between the theater and the parking garage before and after the show. We would come back for more shows.October 2023 update - Came for Sumo show in the Weiss Forum Theater. Its a small theater with one entrance into the theater that is up a ramp. The seats are a little narrow and have some cushion; barely comfortable. Aisle rows are a little narrow as well; had to stand to allow people to get to their seat down the row. A bar was setup on site with alcohol, non-alcoholic and snacks. Staff is friendly and welcoming as always. Ill continue to come back.
