For Southern California this place is a gem. A classic layout that is challenging and scenic. Played on a Monday morning so the rate was definitely reasonable. Pace of play was good (4.5 hours) and ranger stays on top of slow groups. Bring a few extra golf balls and enjoy the round 🤙

Beautiful, challenging & expensive canyon golf course. This course is in exceptional condition and the green are tricky. The practice areas are top notch, and everything is organized and runs smoothly. Not sure why the lovely club house and patio are so dead on a beautiful Saturday in September? Glad to have been able to play this one on our vacation.

Vacationed in SD and golfed at Maderas and Torrey Pines. This place was far better than Torrey Pines, I couldnt believe it! Yes, TP has the ocean but the course itself was just magnificent. So glad we stumbled on this place!! The course was challenging. The golf carts were so luxury. There was staff all over waiting to assist you in any way. The bathrooms on the course were clean. Just a wonderful experience overall!

My buddies chose Maderas for my bachelor party golf destination and I couldn’t have been more blown away by the experience.Carts are modern and sleek, conditions were perfect, views were beautiful, and the drinks were cold!Difficult course that provides a fun challenge. We enjoyed our time!

Played here the first time a few weeks ago, and was absolutely blown away. The course and grounds were in amazing condition and staff were of the same caliber. I drove an hour and a half to play there from up north, and would do it again without hesitation. Staff, facility, course design and condition were second to none!

Loved everything about this place. The course layout is tough and amazing, and the scenery is stunning. The conditions were also really impressive, with impeccable greens and fairways and the practice facility was great. Club house staff were very welcoming and attentive. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and worth the visit if you’re in the SD area.

Course was in great shape and the area is beautiful, one of the most unique courses I have played in terms of terrain. Plenty of challenging holes but fair overall. We played the blue tees which totals around 6,600 yards - as a low double digit handicap, this length felt reasonable but definitely some tough tee shots. The twilight rate was very reasonable for the service and course, will be back when I return to San Diego

Maderas is a roller coaster ride from start to finish! Extreme uphill and downhill shots to execute. Course is fairly tight in the landing areas, so recklessly pulling driver every hole is not the way to score here. Conditioning is usually great, and you will pay a premium for that. Great vistas from all areas of the course, and the green complexes put pressure on faulty short games.

Really challenging course that makes you think about every shot. Score may not be the best indicator of a good round but lost balls is. Under 4 lost balls is a great round! Great staff, great conditions, definitely recommended. 👍

I love this place. Great food at the restaurant, so much in fact my buddy and I ate breakfast there before our round and lunch after. Fantastic! The course is beautiful and very scenic. My lock screen on my phone is I believe the third fairway from the tee. I hope to visit again soon.

Very deceiving layout. The elevation and slopes appear to be subtle, but this course can be challenging if you havent played here before. This course has elevation changes, some narrow fairways, some open fairways and you get a fair amount of opportunity to play some good golf. Very good course conditions even in winter time. Would play here again.

Awesome Golf Course!!This course makes you think about each tee shot.Fairway were in great shape with alot of uneven lies. Greens very fast, hit the practice green before starting your round.If you are NOT regularly shoot less then 100, then I would not suggest playing this course.Overall, a great course well worth the $100+ green fees! Awesome course! Beautiful terrain helps create fun and challenging shots. Top level service across the board. Great conditions and greens. Tip 1: Watch the hole flyover on the GPS screen to get helpful tips for each hole. Tip 2: On the 18th tee, walk up to the highest tee box for an amazing view. Bring your driver, its too tempting not to fire a drive from that high.

This is a very beautiful and very challenging course. We played with members who graciously shared course intelligence. That made a difference. Greens are in excellent condition. Pace of play was good - finishing a weekend round in four hours. Staff is friendly and helpful. Great day.

Celebrated a friends birthday with a round at Maderas and it was incredible. The practice facility was premium with multiple bunkers and greens to warmup on. The course was in fantastic shape from tee box to green.

Challenging course with several carries. Greens and traps were in impeccable shape. The fairways were in good shape too for the most part.The staff was fantastic, and the clubhouse was impressive. My one complaint was the overzealous GPS that shut down my cart a few times.This course will test you. Very unforgiving. My advise is check your machismo and move up to the teal tees. Recommend everyone give it a try but not sure it is worth the price for most of us.

I have always wanted to play Maderas upon player recommendations and Google searches for tip courses in San Diego. Its about 1/2 hour from the 5 fwy off the 78. More inland and into the canyons.Upon entering, I was warmly greeted by the attendants who took my bags and put them on a cart. I checked in and wanted to warm up and was guided to the range area. The marshall was very friendly and asked if I wanted to join a twosome as I was only a single golfer, which I obliged. Playing as a single makes the experience go by too quick IMO.The course and grounds were in immaculate shape. I was really impressed by the fairways and the overall layout of the course. It didnt require a driver on every par 4 or 5. You had to think your way through the course. It was fair as well but provided enough of a challenge to make it interesting.For me, it was worth a splurge to play this course. I played one weekday where you get a better value as well. I can truly see why Maderas is rated so high. Highly recommend!

Played here Feb of 2016. Very nice course! Maderas is a much more San Diego-style course and is a great alternate if you dont want to or cant play Torrey Pines South. Very hilly, and extremely challenging greens (when the speed is up). The holes have nice turns, ups, and downs but the hazards arent really placed with imagination. Conditioning could be better.

I palyed this course at the beginning of the month. I played 7 courses in my 2 weeks in the US including both Torrey Pines courses and this was easily the best conditioned course of the lot. Loved the layout and the facilities and LIS, the conditioing.

Absolutely amazing course and amazing staff… for the most part. Showed up about 45 minutes early to hit the range and grab some food for warm up. While waiting for food, the starter rushes into the clubhouse and was extremely rude and pushy for no reason at all to get to the tee. There were no tee times for 4 slots after us, we checked, and as I scrambled to get to the tee the pair we were with hadn’t even hit a tee shot yet. Great way to ruin the experience from the very beginning.Then, on the front 9 on a par 3, I see a marshal waiting for us next to the green. As we pullup he informs us we are 5 minutes behind pace. Again, there is NO ONE behind us for at least two holes. The owners had decided to book up tee times later on for a tournament or something and apparently god forbid we be on the PUBLIC course while they play.To top it all off, my playing partner left his phone on a tee box and the good ol boys in the clubhouse decided to read his texts after he had confirmed that the phone was his. He abruptly intervened and the clubhouse staff was rattled. AND AGAIN the starter who ruined the experience in the first place tried to rattle my playing partner about losing his phone, multiple times, for absolutely no reason.Public courses who charge $45 for a green fee are so much less snobby than these guys. Go play Mt. Woodson for more of a challenge and a better atmosphere. Or maybe give your money to Pelican Hill for a better experience if you’re looking to be catered to.

Friendly and helpful staff stood out the most. Busy day with carts running short, but the Maderas team got us everything we needed up until tee-off. The course itself is fun and hilly. Lots of unplayable brush, but the valleys serve as bumpers for wayward shots.

Beautiful course with lots of cool elevation changes and scenery. Challenging, but fun. I played Blue tees (roughly 6700 yards) and found them manageable distance wise. Customer Service was wonderful. They actually managed pace of play, which was helpful.

Pretty course situated in a valley. Noticeable elevation change which is welcome in SoCal. Layout interesting, even with multiple plays. Greens mostly pretty large which allows for varying pin placement. Staff is friendly and helpful. Well organized. Grass range included which is always welcome.

General manager Patricks policies prioritizess profits over safety. While COVID is still a part of daily life, his policy at Madera forces you to pay extra if you dont want to share a cart with a person whom you dont know their health history. When asked about it, he says that if the law doesnt require him to give out extra carts, he wont. I cited his language at the facility and on the website advertising their commitment to guest safety but essentially defaulting the guest to sitting 4 inches from someone not in your family for 4 hours, but he would not budge or acknowledge the disconnect.. instead, he cited a cart shortage.... they had a whole extra rental fleet of carts in the parking lot. They also charge you an extra fee to sanitize your cart and some sort of water surcharge for the extra cart.Golf course was in amazing shape. It is a tough course, but the layout is fair. It is a 5 star course based on conditions and staff. But talking with Patrick and his attitude soured my experience.

A course worth playing if you don’t know it … however they are no longer policing pace of play (just finished a 5h30 round). Their ability to keep pace under 4h30 was a key differentiator to other courses and why I use to play this a lot, but that seems to no longer be the case so if you are a SD resident, save yourself almost $200 in green fees and play Torrey.

Got an awesome deal on golfnow app. Was recommended by many as a must play public course and it did not disappoint. Course was very scenic, greens and fairways were in excellent condition. Lots of elevation and because of that I would say the course plays a bit shorter then the scorecard suggest. Had alot of fun and would definitely play there again.

This place is absolutely stunning. A very challenging course in the Poway Hills. Perfect greens and great fairways. It is pretty expensive but it certainly is worth the price as there is no other public course in the area quite like it. Staff is friendly and the club house is very nice and clean.

Nice selection of womens clothing in the pro shop. Rounds are very pricey and the add on additional fees (water?) that should just be a part of the greens fees. Played on Friday twilight for $190.00 at 3:30 PM and it was pretty bad.1) I was charged $9.45 for water surcharge. What is this about?2) I was charged $5.00 for bag service fee. Not one employee ever touched my bag. Again, I have NO idea what this is about.3) Starting at 3:30 pm, i thought Id finish or get very close. The course was SO backed up, I stopped after 11 holes. I mean it was a very bad wait after each and every hole.4) Weekend morning tee times are around $250. I thought the course and the conditions would be much better. For the price, definitely not worth it IMHO.5) For such a high priced course, i would have expected grass golf range but it wasnt.Lemonade at the end is really good and the club house looks good. But all in all, definitely not worth the trip, especially for this price.

Maderas was the absolute best decision we ever made! The day-of the wedding, my husband I constantly said to each other how did we luck out finding such an incredible venue.. From our first meeting with Maderass team, we knew that this was the perfect venue for us. The golf course is absolutely stunning and offers such an incredible backdrop with the mountains in the background. Rebecca was our venue coordinator and she was SO incredible at kindly answering any questions we had during the planning process and being that trusted resource for us. Day-of, everything went off without a hitch and we were over the moon with the entire day! The food was incredible and their drink options for the bar are awesome! We are still getting comments from guests raving about the venue and how smoothly the entire day went. We wouldnt have changed one single thing about our big day!

Outstanding golf course, great layout and extremely challenging undulations. Fairways and greens well maintained. Carts have GPS with extremely accurate yardage approaches. Staff, including the starter are friendly, courteous and well versed on course conditions and pace of play. Parking is plentiful and venue is easy to find via Google maps. Bar and on course beverages cart are an added bonus. Will definitely be returning to challenge the course layout.

Out of town visit to SD. Met son for golf at Maderas GC in mid October 22. We were aware of the high cost to play there, however, no mention of multiple additional fees for the day. From my perspective, this club is not professionally run and no transparency for these hidden fees. Called the club to address and they basically said thats how it goes. Thumbs down. If I could give a zero star i would.

Beautiful golf course, nice staff members and peaceful atmosphere. You can really get away from everything for a few hours and genuinely enjoy a unique golfing experience. Im serious when I say get away because youll be lucky to get any cell phone reception out on the course.Ive played almost every golf course in San Diego and this one is definitely on my top 10 list. The course conditions are above par and the greens are rolling true and fast. The design is very challenging, even from the middle tees, and youll usually be hitting to an area that is different in elevation. Youll want to bring your camera and an ample supply of golf balls! Let me just preface that I am not a good golfer, and that Ive been to a decent amount of golf courses, both public and private. Were the pin positions hard? Yes. Was the course in great shape? Yes. Was it worth $200? No. We had the unfortunate pleasure of our beverage person being Claire, who happens to have 200,000 Instagram followers and thinks that that entitles her to not work her job. We saw her once on the 5th hole, then never to be seen again. Ill also mention that the course was stacked and she could have and should have been bringing in plenty of revenue for the golf course (and tips for herself).If you enjoy paying $200+ for rounds that hurt you emotionally and physically and dont mind a dry round(talking bout the booze not the weather), this is the course for you.

Tend to really dislike Johnny Miller designs, and while some of that was relevant at this course, it seemed to play a little more fair in comparison to some of his other courses Ive played. The staff was friendly and professional. The course was in excellent condition, much better than Torrey Pines and much more affordable. Received free water bottles, divot tool, moist towel and lemonade after the round. The course is very playable and the greens are fast and undulating. 2 stars just bc the course was in great shape, but unfriendly staff and poor safety policies take away from its beauty. Price advertised is not the price you pay! They sneak on a cart cleaning fee and God forbid you want to ride separately bc that will cost you $35 in addition to the $150 mid-week green fee. Plenty of other great tracks around that aren’t so greedy and won’t take advantage of you.

What a beautiful course!!!!!! Played here in August, and the conditions were AMAZING. Top notch service, facilities and staff. I was going to play Torrey Pines but, there was a tourney going on. My local head pro told me about it and Im glad I listened. Is it pricey? Sure, but you get what you pay for here. Cant say enough great things about the course. The ONLY thing I would like to see changed is, a separate cart for singles getting paired up. It was kind of awkward riding in a cart with someone you dont know. Would love to go back again. Course design is 8/10, Johnny Miller did a great job yet there are few holes that are too difficult unfair and a couple holes that have awkward forced layups off the tee. Didnt play golf, although it was a pretty course, but I was looking at hosting a wedding here. The wedding planner did not seem very interested in my vision, and although the venue was very nice, it seemed like the planner was always disagreeing with my opinion about where I wanted to host the reception based off of her personal experience. Which again, I appreciate her experience but it was almost like she told me all of the options just to knock them down.One specific example is I said I didnt want any beer at my wedding and she said, no one will have fun at your wedding if you dont have beer. again personal opinion, but if I am paying you money and you dont know what my friends and family are like, it would be best to not make assumptions about decisions we have already made.Overall she seemed annoyed that my mom was asking questions (this was only the 2nd venue we visited), and even rolled her eyes and made rude remarks under her breath.She definitely put a damper in my planning process and wouldnt want anyone else to experience the same.

This was the first time Ive been here and was not disappointed. The patio was lovely and peaceful, and the view overlooking the golf course was great. Had the pear and Manchego salad with seared ahi. Absolutely delicious. The ahi melted in your mouth! Will be back again!

The carts (at least at the time of this review) have this amazing extra padding and they have the surfboard carts (bring an umbrella if its hot and sunny)! One of the best golf courses in California. A real treat to play, the greens will be your best friend if you play the holes right. Stay in the middle and you will score just fine. Do not be hero and try to hit the shortcuts. The condition of this course is tournament ready. Since the upkeep is on point. The tee boxes are well kept and the greens are pure. Great course and superb conditions. Played here midweek late morning. The course was fairly empty at that time but lot of golfers are started going out around 1:00PM. There is a decent proshop,where you need to go for check in. I was able to go out earlier than my original tee time. The cart has navigation and really helped navigating the course. It also allows to order food from cart so it will.be ready by the time you turn around at 10th tee. Greens were super fast and fairways were well maintained. Only negative was ground staff was not at all courteous. On 4th the guy just drove thru when the group was middle of fairway ready to hit their second shot. On another hole, maintenance guy was cutting the grass, and did not bother shut down engine for 2 minutes while group was teeing up. Besides this incidents, overall it was a great experience playing this course. The whole round was under 4 hours with multiple mulligans and breaks.

The course from tee to green seems so challenging. You need to play smart shots and if it is your first time playing, just realize that you may gain strokes just because you need to hit the ball in the right place. But, it turns out that is the easy part. The true teeth of this course are the greens. Have fun and remember there is such a thing as a good three putt!

Not for the faint of heart. Tough course from the white and blue tees. From the tips, forget it. Brutal! Some black tees add close to 100 yards and margin of error is next to zero. Overall, a great course for nearly any caliber of intermediate+ player. Not a place for beginners.

I was a tad disappointed by a previous favorite spot of ours for Sunday lunch. Their prices have more than doubled since last year and their portions have decreased. Also, upon checking out the waitress, and most likely other staff on hand, could not figure out how to divide our bill between 3 separate parties at our table. Extremely frustrating trying to explain simple math to these folks. We all ended up paying more than we shouldve from the original tab!!So, until I hear from a friend otherwise, we wont be going back for food anytime soon!

The Grounds: It is evident that the owners take pride in the presentation of the club by keeping everything green, lush and exceptionally clean. It almost looks like a resort. There was PLENTY of parking for all of my guests and the ballroom is a landmark on the premises. No need to worry about guests not being able to find you.The Ceremony Site: I used the Del Lago Garden for my ceremony and there was ample room for my 175 guests. The lawn was perfectly green and the view was spectacular.The Ballroom: The ballroom is one hell of a venue. The ceilings were palacial and the décor was not overly gaudy. This ballroom was perfect for my gold and deep summer colored wedding. CLEANLINESS was clearly a top priority here as there was not one crumb or speck on the floor, all of the tables and chairs were in pristine condition. The wrought iron chandeliers gave it such a classic look and the amber lighting gave it a splash of romance. The catering team took such good care of making sure there was nothing that looked less than perfect.The Food: No cutting corners or tiny portions here!! Nothing is worse than sitting at a wedding and feeling hungry. Cocktail hour with the tray passed appetizers were such a hit, the options you are given are really meant to fit all palettes and dietary needs. Guests were nearly full and dinner hadn’t even started. The portions were pretty substantial. Our guests had a choice between Wild Sea Bass and Filet Mignon and each were equally as delicious. The Sea Bass was flaky and flavorful and the Filet was cooked to perfection. Rice and potatoes accompanied their respective proteins and we were able to choose which went with which. The veggies were so perfectly cooked, with just that perfect crunch finish. …in addition to your cake you can have a LATE NIGHT DESSERT. Truly a wonderful dining experience. Food was piping hot where it should have been hot and nice and crisp cold where it should have been cold. Perfection.The Staff: Everyone was so kind and attentive not only to me (being the bride) but to everyone. We had their full and undivided attention all night and they were so concerned with how I was doing and how mu guests were doing. Not one thing went overlooked, no cutting corners, and the bartender made the drinks nice and strong…which was awesome because it got everyone loose and on the dance floor.Catering/Event Manager: LAURA MAKES DREAMS COME TRUE! PERIOD. We met Laura on her day off, which already gave us a hint at her work ethic. She was so warm, welcoming and made us feel so welcome. The beauty of the club sells itself so not one word out of her mouth sounded like a sales pitch. She showed us the club top to bottom and showed us every option we could possibly choose from for our special day. Throughout the whole process working with Laura made the planning of this wedding so calm and relaxed. Her organization and confidence in her craft did not stress me out one bit. She was on top of communicating with me and covering every aspect of the event in a timely manner. Not once did I feel rushed to make a decision. She is also there for you to make any recommendations if you are stuck on a decision. My entire family just fell in love with her and the way she was able to fit our needs rather than make us fit the needs of the club. She wanted me to have my dream wedding, she executed perfectly and we love her for it. Mutual respect goes a long way…I’ll leave it at that
