Probably the best ice cream place in SF in my opinion. I am not a big fan of ice cream that is overly sweet because I grow up in Korea where desserts aren’t as sweet as American ones .. I find this place has perfect sweetness for me which you can actually taste the flavors. They have all the “ flavors of Asia “ such as sesame, durian, Thai ice tea, red bean which is amazing !
Still a top 3 Gelato store in SF. They have unique flavors such as mangosteen, pandan, and durian. Gelato is packed with flavor and is creamy and stretches a bit when you scoop it like a good Gelato should. Favorites are still the fruity flavors.
Delicious creamy ice creams, the wait is worth it. I had Guava / Mango 🥭 with lot of pieces of mango and my daughter had Double Chocolate 🍫 Vanilla & we both loved it.
Great flavors and variety. I like the tropical ones that they bring in specific seasons. I do recommend Cantaloupe, Jackfruit, Coffee and Coconut.Chocolate has only one flavor-Double Chocolate, wish they had more.FYI this place is always crowded and you would need to figure out parking. That’s an issue

Best Gelato I have ever had. Tiny little place with a few tables and good selection. We waited in line for more than 30 mins because they only had one guy serving and working the register. I would still go back. It was worth the wait and the line was still out the door when we left.
They are closed as of 10/11 and moving to a new spot! their google page says open but looks like they’re relocating and won’t be serving in SF until spring 2024 (san jose location still open for service)
Some of the best ice cream Ive ever had!!! I love the Asian-inspire flavors. I sampled a few, but ended up with lychee and jackfruit. My husband got durian (TRY IT if youve never had durian) and taro!
If you have not tried durian before, this gelato can be your entry level, taste like the real durian but not smelly

This place has always hit the spot, I would recommend the durian, Thai tea, green tea and mango flavors! They have some interesting flavors like mangosteen so come by and try a few! If not take a pint home and enjoy during Covid
My family and I have been coming here since we were small children. Marco Polo has been a neighborhood staple for us for decades! We buy pints of the durian for home, and then cones of more durian, the vanilla bean, guava, lychee, red bean, soursop, etc. The flavors are all so good!! And the texture so smooth and delightful. No cold or wind or fog can convince me it’s a bad time for Marco Polo.

Incredible gelato and the flavors are so unique. They were out of red bean, so I had taro and strawberry. My friend got the coffee flavor which was also very good.
You need to visit this place many times, all flavors are fantastic! The gelato texture and taste is very consistent and delicious. I don’t know if any other gelato shop with such a fabulous Asian flavors.

A San Francisco institution, hands down. The guava and black sesame are my absolute favorite flavors and I crave it all the time! Theyve got super fun and creative flavors, and you can sample whatever they have available. The ice cream can be rock hard so you need a warm spoon to scoop it.
Guava was like eating chilled guava and red bean was a perfect blend with enough flavor but not overly packed with beans.

Pricey at $5.75 for a small cup. But most places around the city are overpriced so you might as well get high quality and unique flavors, many from Southeast Asia: pandan leaf, soursop, lychee, sesame, Thai iced tea are just a few. Gelato served with a courteous smile, which should be standard but hard to find in the service sector in the city.
Interesting asian inspired flavours with a few classics gelato flavours inbetween. The shop is a bit rundown and has an untidy appearance. The person behind the counter is very friendly and we had a few tasters before ordering. Good gelato and tastes authentic, but not one of the best in town. I had the taro flavour, which was good, the chocolate is not that great.
Absolutely the BEST Thai tea ice cream in San Francisco, no other place in the city can compare. They specialize in Asian flavors like Thai tea and Ube and Black Sesame and my GOD are they good at it.

Expensive, but very high quality and its Asian flavors are among the best in the world. I tried to find similar quality and flavors in Vietnam and Thailand, but without success.Durian flavor is superb, far better than buying the fruit in the US. Taro and guava are excellent too. After tasting black sesame here, you will find other places taste either like a diet or impure. If you feel guilty eating ice cream, try its red bean. You see so much legume that you may wonder if it should be considered ice cream.
I love their ice creams. Too bad they are moving to a new location & last day here is 10/11/23. New location not open until Spring 2024.
I love their Pistachio gelato. High quality ingredients are used and you can tell by the dense pistachio flavor. My family also enjoys the double chocolate and mango. Some days I like to buy a pint or two to enjoy at home.

So sad, their Taraval Street location is permanently closed. Their San Jose store is still open and a banner at Taraval says they will reopen on Noriega in Spring 2024, though. We just have to wait and wait and wait.

Very unique selection of ice cream of exotic tropical fruits. The ice cream had chunks of fruit in it and was very fresh and not too sweet. The highlights are definitely any fruit flavored ice cream. Really enjoyed the ice cream here, little pricey though but I guess you are paying for the unique flavors.
Their ice cream is great. The consistency is right to be called gelato. There are lots of exotic flavors including black sesame, red bean, durian, jack fruit, mangosteen and guava. Definitely the most lovable ice cream place in the city.

The icream is well kept at the perfect temperature, although I would say the ice cream has a bit of a chewy texture, rather than a super creamy one, I really liked it.There are many flavors and in general they tend to be strong, lots of fuit flavored options and some others as well like pistachio and sesame. Definitely worth a stop.
A generous selection of eclectic flavors that included Coffee V.S.O.P., Young Coconut, Pandan Leaf, and Green Tea. My daughter had A small cup with Honeydew and Green Tea. I had Red Bean and Sesame Seed. Scrumptious!
Marco Polo ice cream is one of lifes sweetest pleasures; I have been a patron here for 30 years. It is pricey and they only take cash, but you wont regret making a trip here for the ice cream. My 2 faves are green tea as well as lychee nut flavors. Even after I moved out of California, every time Im near San Francisco, I will go out of my way to visit Marco Polo Italian Ice Cream. TRY IT AT LEAST ONCE...I think youll love it too!

Went there on an Sunday evening. Havent been here for a long since high school. The taste of the ice cream is still great and remind me of the old time. My recommendation for the favor are Vietnamese coffee, avocado, and any citrus favor.
Marco Polo is probably my favorite ice cream place in the entire world. They make the best Lychee and Durian flavors of all the creameries that offer them. The ice cream isnt really rich but its very smooth and pairs really well with the fruity flavors. Theres no extraneous flavors to get in the way, so the fruit is super bold yet natural tasting. Its an ice cold refreshing dessert that tastes EXACTLY like the real fruit. Its amazing!Regular flavors dont work very well with their not so rich style of gelato, so stick with the fruits. Lychee and Durian!
The best ice cream in the city is in the sunset! So creamy and sweet, the flavors are made fresh. The fruit flavors are the highlights here and you cant go wrong, unless you pick Durian and do not know how Durian taste like. My favorite is banana walnut and mango and nothing can beat that.
What a pleasant surprise! The Asian flavor selection of gelatos were great -- we ordered mangosteen, red bean, black sesame, and taro. The flavors are very pronounced and textures are consistent with the actual ingredient themselves. Definitely a hidden gem within the Sunset district. For those who are familiar with the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory in NYC, definitely try this spot!
Definitely one of the things I will miss from SF. They have lots of unique fruit flavors like lychee and durian and their double chocolate is the best! It is pretty compact, but you can always buy a pint of ice cream and take it to go.

Amazing. Seriously the best ice cream around! My sister and I discover this place accidently after a hotpot dinner. We were stuffed and came here because we wanted something light. The ice cream here is the best Ive ever had. The fruit flavors are beyond fresh and bright. Must try the lycee and mango. I highly recommend the guava. So good. Everything here was good. This is how ice cream should be made. Smooth, and lightly sweet and a little bit goes a long way. Its very moderately priced for the preimum ice cream you get. We always stop by here for dessert after our dinner now because just sharing a small is enough to feed 3 girls.
The best ice cream Gelato spot in the west coast. Flavors you wont find at pollyann or Mitchells. Been coming here since I was 5 years old. Everything still taste the same. Theyre consistent with their flavors and they are true to taste, meaning they taste like whats described. Nothing off about it no fake flavoring, just pure and true. If I had a last meal on earth this would be my dessert.
Rivals or exceeds gelato I have eaten at any European gelateria. They have a great selection of flavors, all of them vividly tasty! The consistency is very dense, and it has stretch like mozzarella cheese! The utilitarian retail & seating area up front belie their glorious product! It is exceptional...
Probably one of the best joints to enjoy a good gelato in SF. Super silky and creamy just the way gelato should be. There are a variety of flavors, so you really cant go wrong. Parking is pretty good, not too bad. Definitely would recommend this spot to anyone before settling for North Beach 👌🏼
I miss living close by because this was my go to place after work and on the weekends! Their sesame, red bean and durian flavor gelatos are my absolute favorites! If you are looking for popular asian flavored gelatos, then you would want to come here again and again! They have enough flavors for you to try for weeks...unless you like to get triple scoops every time like myself. :)
Interesting place..its small and theres usually only one person manning the ice cream stand. Theyre more than welcome in giving samples to everyone but the lines can get pretty long. Ice cream here are smooth and tasty. They have lot of the Asian and Southeast Asian flavors including mangosteen, lychee and durian (an acquired taste), black sesame, etc.Expect to pay a little more than your standard Baskin Robbins, but your taste buds will thank you.
Tasty little gelato shop that had very nice exotic flavors. tried the jack fruit, mangosteen and red bean and all three had a very pleasant taste that was not over powering. a little bit on the pricey side, but gelato is usually more expensive than ice cream since they dont whip in as much air.

This unassuming neighborhood gelato spot has the BEST Asian fruit gelato -- durian for the adventurous, lychee for beginners and everything in between with black sesame, red bean, mango, coconut, taro and jackfruit. If fruit gelatos not your thing, definitely try their rum raisin or Arcobaleno (vanilla + choc + pistachio + almond)!

Marco Polo Italian Ice Cream is the bomb!! I used to always go there for the Asian flavors such as red bean, black sesame, taro, lychee, durian (only tried it once…it’s strong!!), and guava. Guava used to be my favorite…until a friend of mine urged me to try their chocolate flavor. Oh boy, Marco Polo has got some serious good chocolaty chocolate ice cream!! It’s now my #1 favorite!! You can get small containers to go, they aren’t cheap tho. Think it was $11 for a tiny little pint. But I savor every bite because it’s totally worth it!
Full disclosure I am not a fan of all the flavors they have, but I really enjoyed what I ended up with and will definitely try to be more adventurous next time. The gelato was very good, but the establishment itself has seen better days. Kinda wanted to get my gelato and get out of there. Still would get a cone to go for sure!
When we are in the City we will drop by Marco Polo.This has the best Asian fruit flavors for gelato. They have durian, mangosteen, jack fruit Thai tea, green tea, mango, black sesame, coconut, lychee, coffee, and many more flavors. They make it there on site so its always fresh and refreshing. They scoop it up in a cup and you can have one flavor, two favors or three flavors in one cup. Fun place to meet up with friends and have great conversations.
A decent take on gelato. Many non traditional gelato flavors, which was nice, but the traditional flavors werent very authentic. I brought my niece here attempting to show her the difference between gelato and ice cream, and I dont think this repped gelato well enough to have been a legit comparison. The red bean was good. Cash only though.
My favorite flavor is durian and I don’t even like durian in its original form. I don’t know how they do it, but they magically transform durian into this magical and creamy ice cream I can’t stop devouring. Basically, all things dreamy about durian flavor without the piercing smell.Another flavor I really like is their soursop. Why are you only in SF?! Such deliciousness should be spread around for others to enjoy. ^_^ The first time I tried Marco Polo was when my friend drove it down to SoCal. It didnt melt even though it was only in an ice box for 6hrs! The durian ice cream was so addicting, I ate half the pint in one sitting. No shame! :P I went to visit SF recently and got to enjoy it at the store. My favorites are the durian and jackfruit! How asian of me, I know...but, I dont care!!! Its super fresh with real fruit bits inside. I highly recommend this place for anyone and everyone visiting or liviing in SF. :D

A gelato shop featuring southeast asian fruits and flavors, which makes the shop name all the more fitting. Large selection of fruity flavors (lychee, guava, jackfruit, durian, mango, and soursop just to name a few) which are available year-round. Their durian flavor captures all the best parts of the fruit, with none of the smells.

You wont come here for the facilities (it is not super clean and a bit cramped), but the gelato is actually pretty good, and its all homemade apparently! The chocolate is by far my favorite, and is perfect for a chocoholic like myself. However, the healthiness of it is open to debate.

Wow the mango gelato here is amazing - milky creamy mango-y goodness! This is typically hard to find since most mango gelatos are overly sweet with too much purée or tart and icier sorbet style.The lychee was a tad on the sweet side but also very smooth, milky and creamy.They have traditional flavors, but they excel more in the Asian flavors (eg. Green tea, mango, lychee, durian....). Dont get the Vientiane Coffee.Probably the best gelato Ive had in awhile.

The ice cream was good but not authentic Italian. the ice cream flavors were all over the place and if you are called an Italian ice cream place then serve Italian ice cream. the service was not anything to be proud about either. my sister even found rubber something in her ice cream

Well, they say it is italian ice cream, but it is definitely chinese ie cream with chinese flavours (not sure why they still put an italian flag and categorized themselves as italian ice cream though).I went there around 7pm on a Sunday night and it was quite busy (we waited there for probably 20/30mn to get our ice cream).The ice creams are good and I enjoyed it, but probably more because of the heat in SF at that moment. Otherwise, I dont think they have anything extraordinary nor italian, just great ice cream.

Im a big fan of this gelato shop! I come here almost once a week! I usually get a waffle cone with two scoops. Im a big fan or the arcobleno...vanilla, pistacchio and chocolate mixture. The second flavore varies. Sometimes its java chip and sometimes its banana walnut. I havent had a bad flavor yet! They have some flavors that are more unique like red bean. The line can be long at times but it moves quickly. A must stop by for a date or an ice cream craving when in Sunset/Parkside!

Just came back from a trip in Italy and has some of the richest gelato Ive ever had there. Came back to the States craving some rich gelato but unfortunately most places in SF let alone the States cant match how the Italians do their gelato.Mostly disspainted with most gelato shops in the city I decided to give MP another try not being here for ages. Wow I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and flavoring of MP. The quality was not exactly on par with gelato in Italy but darn it came awfully close ! Highly recommend MP if u want the best gelato in the city.
So after going to Kingdom of Dumpling, my husband and I were looking for dessert and after a google look up we came across Marco Polo. The name sounded as if we were going to step into an Italian Ice Cream Parlor with your typical flavors of vanilla, chocolate, etc, - however this Parlor has exotic asian flavors! I was surprised to see Mangosteen on the menu and Durian. I ended up trying the Mangosteen and the Jackfruit - both had bits of the actual fruit in it. I highly recommend trying this place out!

Proper italian traditional small batch approach taken to flavors like red bean and taro as well as Italian staples like arcabeleno and salted pistachio. Take a double in a waffle to go enjoy the nearby parks and shops along Taraval to the ocean.

Really tasty, and a lot of Asian inspired flavors that are hard to find elsewhere. The gelato is homemade too, and very creamy.
Too many Asian flavors. Drop the Italian ice cream at least.

2023-05-14 00:54:05There are many different flavors of ice cream that you wouldn’t get anywhere else it’s like the actual flavors of the fruits or items. It’s a lot of fun when you can try sour sop, Thai tea, mangosteen, coconut, jackfruit, green tea, durian, double chocolate, mango, vanilla bean, coffee vsop, Pandan leaf, lychee, sesame, red bean, pistachio, mocha chip, guava, taro, mint chocolate chip, strawberry, fresh banana. The flavors taste like the real thing. So you will enjoy this experience. Outdoor and indoor seating. Parking is on the street w meters.

2022-05-05 03:14:33I bought a pint of each... soursop (my #3 fav), mangosteen (my #4 fav), durian (my #1 fav), jackfruit (my #2 fav), and pistachio (my #5 fav). Now that I think back, I should have also gotten the guava (my #6 fav). Oh well, Ill get them next time.After tasting the durian and jackfruit, I am so much IN LOVE! They are wonderfully and deliciously fantastic and smooth. Hands down... they beat the soursop and mangosteen (I still love you guys, but not as much as I love durian and jackfruit LOL). I wish I bought more like double or triple pints of each, but I only had a small cooler with me at the time, hence, I didnt have room for any more pints. Ill make sure I have the space for extras next time. I had already tried the soursop and mangosteen so I know they were good. I havent opened the Pistachio yet, but Im sure its good, too. All their pints are pre-packed which makes it easy and saves time. The pints are a little pricey IMHO, but hey, youre getting the real deal so thats okay. Its actually cheaper by the pint versus by the scoop. You do get more bang for your buck. It would be nice if they sold them by the quart though (hint hint LOL).Staff was friendly and pleasant. Service was quick. I will definitely be back for more Marco Polo Italian gelato. Do give them a try when youre in the Bay area. It would be nice if they open new locations in So Cal (another hint hint LOL) so I dont have to wait until the next time Im in SF for amazing gelato LOL. Life is short... we gotta eat ice cream or gelato in this case. Happy Gelatoing!

2023-04-27 01:30:04I was pmsing today and I was feeling very cranky. While walking in the neighborhood I came across this shop. A guy I was on a date with once told me he’ll bring me here but never did, so I went myself. I got the pandan ice cream. Firstly it’s green and so pretty and I was expecting it to taste like beatle leaf but it tastes so unique, fresh and really yum. It was only $5.75 for two scoops and when you add a wafer it’s around 6 and Something bucks. The staff was also so sweet and friendly. He gave me really good energy and vibes while I wasn’t feeling too great because of my PMS. He let me sample a bunch of stuff but I fell in love with this pandan leaf flavor. I think this is a cute hidden gem. Also a great date spot- you could get ice cream here and then walk straight towards the ocean. You could start a couple hours before sunset and then reach ocean beach right in time for sunset and it’ll be so so cute and romantic. My date didn’t do that with me but you can with yours. Ladies, don’t be afraid to shoot your shot with that one guy you’re thinking about. Who knows, maybe it’ll work out!! Do try this spot guys!!

2022-05-20 04:10:39My childhood in each scoop! Those asian fruit flavor gelato cannot be found anywhere else. Get there early after dinner, as lines can grow quite long. There are tons of different flavors, but I always go back to guave and lychee.

2023-04-30 00:26:15Im a big fan of Marco Polo for so many years (9yrs?), Hands down the most unique and flavorful ice cream shop in SF. And look, everytike I go I get pints of them.Here are my recommendations.1. DURIAN- love it or hate it. If youve never tried durian, ask them to give you a spoon first before you order. Lol2. Lychee- cant go wrong, its my favourite and its refreshing.3. Pandan- its a little sweet but in a nice way.4. Taro- taro is like a brother of their red bean.5. Red bean- like other fruity flavours its got some red bean bits in it.6. Thai tea- tastes exactly like Thai tea but its ice cream instead.7. Guava- super refreshing.8. Sesame- my old favourite.My least favourite is matcha. Im a matcha guru and even haggendaz does way better matcha than my dear Marco Polo. Just dont.

Chose durian and lychee as my flavors and they were delicious.... only if you like durian. It didnt taste as fresh as I hoped because Im a durian fiend but still delicious!Food: 6/10Service: 6/10Experience: 4/10Value: 6/10
