Great little restaurant nested away on the corner with a few others, that serves up quite the selection of cozy comforts in the area. Happy to drop in with a friend or go it solo, and enjoy the dumplings or pot stickers with fresh hot tea and a variety of delicious Asian soups.

Food was really tasty not a whole lot of places to sit but thats fine we sat by the window and there was a couple nice bushes on the outside that we can see through the glass theres a sushi bar that you can sit at and more seating around the back we got all you can eat and it was freshly made everything was really good the sushi was made to order and was tasty their specialty rolls are very good and have a good recipes and ingredients it was only two ladies working and the main customer service lady was very friendly she seemed to be a little overworked but she was still very nice

I had the All You Can Eat, prices went up from their website it is now 25/28, but still well worth it. I prefer the nigiri over the rolls. Recommend the white tuna, yellowtail, salmon, squid, and eel. Only complaint was that I ordered squid but they gave me octopus, twice...

With tip I paid nearly $30 for this meal. It was appalling. Inedible. Greasy and small portioned tempura. What the hell is that in the roll?! White miso, no, no it wasnt. Salad fresh, er, salad from a bag. $13 for a very small roll and separated sauce. After the brown lettuce and the Eldritch horror in the first roll I couldnt bring myself to eat it. The rice was good. My shadow will never darken their door again. Learn from my suffering. I will only eat from a certain sushi place downtown from now on. Starts with an S ends with an un. Peace.

This place moved to down town a couple yrs ago and I still frequent it, my daughter loves eating here now too.They are under a different name name now and it doesnt look anything like its last location but Chef Danny is still there doing hos thing.

Very hot environment! Ramen noodles were from package not made and the broth was nothing special. I dropped $179 for a family of five. Not worth it!!!!The sushi was ok not great. They served us water with no ice while no air conditioning in their establishment. I had to ask for ice. Will not be going back.

I am so disappointed in this restaurant. Three of us ordered the all you can eat dinner. After one roll each, we were full. We asked if we could change our order from the all you can eat to just pay for the one roll per person. We were told no. Even charged extra for the cream cheese added to one roll! We left after having to pay $93 plus tax and tip (credit card option did not have a no tip option). We will never be back. They could have worked with us. Three high school students paying this amount for dinner is crazy. To top this, we said fine, let us take our remaining sushi home. Once again, we were told no, we must each the sushi in the restaurant, and if we could not eat all the sushi, for each piece we would have to pay an additional dollar per piece !!! This is CRAZY.

I really enjoy the environment here. The staff are friendly and fast, so the service is always great. The all you can eat is a great deal for a group of hungry college students. They will just keep bringing excellent sushi out as much as you order for 3 rounds, no time limit or anything like that. I will go back again for sure.

We went for the all you can eat. It was decent for the price. the rolls are often made quite large so pace yourself and order half of not sharing. We especially like the cooked menu.The dish that says lobster is really crawfish, but is still one of the best dishes we had there.Fresh ingredients.They have vegan options too.

Im from San Diego and was just in town visiting a friend and randomly ran into this place. My expectations were pretty low actually, especially since the place advertises that its under new ownership. Places like that seem to be wrecks.But this place blew away my expectations. The new owner/sushi chef knows what hes doing. I worked at one of the best sushi bars in Washington DC for two years and have tried sushi everywhere, and this place impressed me greatly. The new owner also has a very successful restaurant in riverside, so he also has a good track record.Do yourself a favor and definitely visit here, and order the dragon roll especially. His is fantastic!

Nice quiet little restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff. The food here was fantastic, I had the salmon combo plate with a spicy tuna roll. Everything on my plate was fresh, and the house made tea was exquisite. 10/10 would make the drive back into Santa Cruz to have the pleasure of eating here again.

This was our first experience at Mays and it wasnt so great. Our food took forever, and everything came out 5 minutes apart. While the table next to us got almost all their food way before we even received our second item. The server was honestly, kind of a jerk, the other server was good though. For first timers, order half rolls! and dont waste your time with the Crazy roll it sucks, its crazy how much it sucks. The nigiri, tempura, gyoza, and spider roll were pretty good. At the end, I had a $14 cash tip ready for him, which my bf said was ridiculous considering the bad service, but, as a server I understand bad days, or whatever. Anyways, At the end the server took my card, left for a second, came back and said it declined. I literally just deposited money I tried to tell him to wait a second but he just left so I followed him to the register where he avoided me and went to another table so the other server ran my card and it was approved right away. Of course. I went back to my table and my bf said You still think you should tip $14 I decided Id hit my breaking point with the server and only tipped $9. If youre reading this Im sorry but you were not nice, speedy or helpful to us at all. We will be back hoping for better service.

The best customer service and personal appreciation from the head sushi chef. My husband and I had the most amazing experience. They prepared to begin to close early and a very kind waitress said we are open and available to treat you. The experience was personal and amazing. Fresh, personable customer service, and hands on personal thanks from fhe sushi chef. Our waiteess was amazing, kind, supportive, and great with suggestions from the chef. We couldnt help but hive an i0% gratitude. Cant wait to go back! So fresh so tasty so amazingly satiable. Thank you!

The fishes are fresh and the portion is satisfying. Id recommend rolls over sushi. I personally like this place better than Akira simply because you dont have to wait (waiting for food never makes sense to me). Beware the bill already includes tips for all you can eat diners.

Ive been to every sushi place in town and this is easily my favorite one! They get your food out to you in a very timely manner. You definitely have to try the all you can eat special at least once. You wont regret it!

The food is really quite decent. The service we had was brutal. The younger guy that works there, is pretty much the worst waiter Ive ever had. After politely explaining that you can make any roll spicy by adding sriracha he begrudgingly agreed to order it for me. My 9 year old looked at me after he took our order, and said, what is wrong with this guy.I ordered a dinner special for my son and I to share. Not once did he offer us plates, despite the rice and mess now converting the table.It was actually pretty funny.Anyways, good food. Avoid the younger waiter! :)

I’ve ordered here about three times and every single order I have ever made has had an error. I ordered two rolls yesterday and one of them was the wrong one, but I was in a rush so I didn’t realize until I went to sit down at work and eat. I love their miso soup and their food is amazing but I have no idea what is up with their service or if I’m just that quiet, which I didn’t think I was.

Sauce was not listed in the roll description, and when I got a roll with a disgusting, overpowering mustard sauce on it I couldnt eat it. Manager would not take it off my bill. Are they new at this restaurant/hospitality thing? Not sure, but Ill never return. Good luck improving.

We had all you can eat, didnt know they were going to bring 4 rolls and then make us wait for 20 mins before bringing next part order (after having to ask them) and not bring the rest of the order. Sushi was sub par as was service. For me not worth the price. And really 2 if the 4 rolls we ordered were supposed were all fake crab meat and very little fish.

Ate here once in January 2015. Was not impressed with the food, but it wasnt awful, just very basic. The servers (I believe this is a family business) were friendly but far overworked and not attentive. However, watching a group of physically large potheads (we saw and smelled them smoking it before coming in, this isnt just a guess!) come in and order the all you can eat buffet was quite entertaining, and seemed like a quintessential SC occurrence.

Best all-you-can-eat sushi bar around. Lots of variety, decent quality, not paper-thin cuts of fish. Sushi is normally expensive and this place will save you a ton of money. $23 for lunch, $25 for dinner.

I went with four friends for the all you can eat sushi, and the overall experience was pretty good. Mays isnt the quietest place, but its quiet enough to enjoy a conversation. The service was decent, and prompt for the most part. Sadly, there is no WiFi that the restaurant provides.

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. To start, the male server with the glasses was offensively impolite. Ordered a corona with a lime, recieved a warm and flat beer with a lemon. Ordered a vegetarian noodle bowl and found a piece of fish. Ordered the bento box, it was extremely unappealing. Gave it a chance anyway, and everything on the plate was horrible besides the rice. And to top it off, my friends and I paid for our checks separately and we were all charged a 15% tip due to having 5 people in our party which I think it’s absurd. We are now in the car on our way home and all of our stomachs feel uneasy. The only thing this restaurant has going for them is their nice female waitress. I highly reccomend not giving this establishment your time OR money. This place is atrocious to say the least.

How this place is a 4.2 I have no clue! We ordered a roll and it came out wrong, it had scallops on top and when we told the waitress, she argued that it was the right roll and then she said to just scrape off the scallops?!? Im allergic to scallops!!! To top it off I spent the rest of my night in the restroom as did my girlfriend do to the bad sushi 🍣 💩...Would not go back and just want to warn other people not to try this place...

PLEASE BOYCOTT THIS ESTABLISHMENT, DUE TO DISCRIMINATION.I previously posted a rave review about the food and service at this establishment. Unfortunately, I recently visited Mays with two family members, who are African-American. The sushi chef went out of his way to make my guests uncomfortable. We were refused napkins, served spoiled food...the list goes on and on. It was absolutely horrendous. He also refused to interact with our table directly, despite coming out from behind the counter to stand and glare at me, after I took napkins from the adjacent table to clean up a water spill (we had requested a napkin or towel five times, and waited more than ten minutes, with water pouring into my pregnant sisters lap).The wait staff were obviously embarrassed, but did nothing to correct the problem - when we sent back a food item which had obviously been pulled from the trash and replated for our table, the waitress who came back to tell us we would still be charged for it appeared on the verge of tears. We ended up paying the bill, at that point (we had been there for almost two hours, and had not even received half of our order) and walking out.The mistreatment we experienced was definitely racially motivated (it was a low-key weeknight, and we watched as the other two tables received the same stellar food and attentive service I had received in the past. One of the other patrons even stopped us to comment on our mistreatment, as we were leaving!) I will never again visit this establishment - and unless you want to support blatant racism, you shouldnt, either.I did ask to speak to a manager while we were there, and this request was refused. The waitress just kept repeating its not possible with no further explanation. Im unclear on whether or not this chef was also the manager, or an owner of the establishment - but fwiw, the wait staff definitely seemed intimidated by him, so I assume he is a person of some authority.Im sad to report this, as Mays was previously one of my favorite places to take friends for an unpretentious, quality dinner - but I couldnt live with myself if someone else experienced the same treatment my family did. Unless you are the type of person who wants to support blatant racism, please do not visit this establishment.

We had a pretty good experience here, when we went for an All You Can Eat dinner as a group of 4. The rolls were full-sized, as was the nigiri, which surprised me in a good way. What Im knocking 2 stars off for is we didnt get our full order each round -- at least 1 order was missing each round, and leaky water pitchers kept getting water on the menus, table, and dishes. Pro tip for the AYCE meals: take advantage of the option to order 1/2 rolls, and start off easy! Also be sure itll be cost-effective...for the 4 of us, we didnt order enough food to make it worth the cost of AYCE vs ordering things off the menu.

This was my fave in this area but now I wont be coming back anymore. Too much rice on rolls and the sexy sexy roll doesnt look the way it use to, it was my guys fave. And lastly we were warned about charge for leaving rice left over in a very weird way. I didnt like that our waitress wasnt the one to advise us leaving less than a palms worth was chargeable.she just leaves the plate, then a asian man comes out and starts moving napkin around and then tells me thats leftovers. Dont kno him and he didnt address himself. Never had this happen before.

Great sushi at a fair price.I tried their bento lunch (and dinner) special. There’s no difference in the portions between lunch and dinner so it’s probably more worth your while to stop by for lunch. The miso soup they serve with the bento special is dark in color but absolutely delicious. I had California rolls (perfect), crunch rolls (very good), and some fried tofu (crunchy exterior with a soft interior, good balance). The bento box special was also served with a side of Asian salad and a scoop of sticky white rice.Chopstick proficiency is a must as I didn’t see a single other person using a fork. They might have some handy if you ask though.

I loved this place under the previous owners, but the new menu seems more limited, and the all you can eat model doesnt make a lot of sense to me. Mostly I miss the large number of exciting vegetarian rooms in the old menu.

Integrity lackingFor convenience, we’ve Mays visited multiple times as a family. Typically high quality ingredients, pretty good flavors, and reasonable proportions. Service times/quality have been exceptionally variable, with times usually on the high side. Humble digs, at best. Overall, not a bad proposition for family dining.Recently, visited as three “all you can eat” diners (meal advertised with a possible “leftover charge”, which is left undefined). We ordered only 1 round of food (of 3 possible, for “all you can eat”). For some reason, an item which was sketched in for a possible 2nd round was delivered as part of the 1st course (despite clearly delineated course columns on Mays’ own order card, and no additional request from us). We had less than a 1 roll left over (which was 1 more roll than we actually ordered that round), with the total sticker price cost for the items ordered for the 1st round not appreciably more than the total “all you can eat” cost. We asked waiter if we could box remaining slices up to go, but informed of a “to go” charge. We mentioned the practical aspects, and the server said hed consult and get back to us. He returned with a box/check, and was thanked by us. However, the check silently carried a different, equivalent charge with **no mention from the server**, who left with a smile upon being thanked. The food could certainly have been finished, though that wouldn’t be quite as comfortable as taking the over-delivery of course 2 home; this option for some reason was not made available to us (despite our own suggestion of it). We brought up the overcharge with a different server, who defensively gave significant pushback, without really consulting previous server, or actually considering the merits. The inaccuracy of the rounds in the order delivery was repeatedly overlooked by the staff. The server said shed bring it up with boss. So we waited, and waited, and waited, ... even moving to the kitchen exit to speak to the boss in private. The boss never showed up. After no one materialized, we eventually left.Dont incur the hassle. #worstever

Went in for a quick dinner the other night. I noticed all the staff is Caucasian which is kind of a weird thing when you go to a Japanese restaurant. Im not sure these sushi chefs were quite as competent as Japanese ones would be but everything turned out pretty much okay.

Too much rice and imitation crab as fillers. The other part is there is a mandatory tip no matter what. There were very few good things to eat, and the sushi was not garnished with anything. Low quality, every roll tasted the same and the service was bad.

Its probably the only AYCE sushi in town. Its owned by a Korean chef, which is very typical in running low end sushi joints but its rare that he was actually trained in Japan. I ordered a chirashi bowl, now that I think of it is a foolish move in my part. The quality of sashimi were noticeably low but then I dont know what else to expect at a joint that do AYCE sushi rolls. I also had to point out that rice that was used in chirashi tasted a lot closer to a plain stream rice, not a sushi rice. My other friend did the AYCE and he came with the mission. He seemed to enjoy everything he had.

As a local, I can tell you that this is my favorite sushi restaurant in Santa Cruz. Their specialty rolls are great (Try Mays Special.), their service is excellent, and their atmosphere is warm and friendly.
