If I could do my trip over again, I would have taken my local hosts advice and stopped here instead of Costco. Wonderful fresh options and they even had my favorite veggie - delicata squash.Clearly lots of love is poured into this grocery store.

And while many complain about the staff, I’m here to tell you the worst part of MM is the customers.Have you ever been berated by an 80 year old woman for taking up too much space in the aisle? Have you ever had a retired schoolteacher demand to check out before you because she is buying just one pomegranate? Have you ever been confronted by a card carrying member of AARP for not putting your fruit back in the right place?At Monterey Market, you can have these dreams fulfilled. Top quality produce and other groceries. Monterey Market is a Berkeley institution, like Berkeley Bowl but serving the north side. What sets it apart is the incredible diversity of produce available, all at top quality. The store has relationships with growers throughout the state, who I understand give preference to Monterey Markets buyers, and we all benefit.

If you can walk or avoid the busy parking area, I highly suggest visiting this treasure. This market is owned by local families for generations and the selection of colorful fruits, vegetables, herbs and dry goods is stellar. Ive never seen as many types of mushrooms in one place. The selection of VEGAN tamales and dairy free alternatives is very welcome. As a vegan, I appreciate the absence of smelly animal carcasses. I think they have some fish though. This place gave the most wonderful impression.

I like shopping at MMkt for the organic selection and proximity to my house. However, the fruit is often injured from their chilling process. Peaches, pineapples, avocados, are often grey inside. Figs get moldy quick. And so expensive. I wish theyd change their chilling practices.

This is a neighborhood gem of a market with an impressive selection of organic, local, and heirloom produce. Youll find veggies and fruits here that you wont find at other markets. One of my fave places to shop – on the planet!! (5/5 green stars)When I moved to the Bay Area I was lucky enough to stumble upon Monterey Market. It’s really a wonderland of fruit and veggies for anyone who’s not used to having such a wide selection. I usually encourage all new-comers to go there – and then pester them from time to time to ask if they’ve gone yet. Now I know that Berkeley Bowl is a larger store (and I love the Bowl too) but Monterey Market has such a great concentration of amazing produce that it seems to have a larger selection. And for some things, like mushrooms or pesticide-free oranges, does. Even for items that have fewer varieties available, they’ll usually stock a local and organic option if possible. It has much less floor space devoted to freezers and packaged snacks compared to most other stores, and that encourages better shopping habits for me! Good bulk section too, that’s often overlooked. Final thing – their prices are good (see pics for a few examples) and that’s a good thing if you want to support sustainable farming but are on a budget. Doing away with the more expensive processed food, I can buy a huge bag of fruit and veggies to last almost 2 weeks for about $35.I’m giving them 5/5 “green stars” for social and environmental impact. I thought it would be as easy as pie to write a “green star” review of Monterey market – and in a way it still is – but I did come across some controversy in the past. Basically, Bill Fujimoto stepped down as the manager in 2009 amid some disagreements that were not revealed. There was some concern among locals over whether they would maintain their ethos. Having shopped there since 2001 my opinion as an outsider is that it’s as good, if not better than ever. They still clearly favor local produce that’s sustainably farmed (organic, pesticide-free, etc.) – much of which comes from local farms that are well-known for their sustainable practices. As mentioned above they don’t stock a lot of frozen and processed food (that’ a good thing!) and the staples that they do stock are from responsible companies. To take a few examples, coffee from Ritual, Bicycle and (my fave) Counter Culture, kitchen supplies from If You Care, bread from Acme, organic or grass-fed cheese, etc. I can’t comment on wages paid to staff but many of them stick around for years and seem to be pretty happy these days; they run the store very efficiently and seem to have a good time in the process. If you’re avoiding waste in your life, Monterey Market is a good place to come – aside from standard bulk items (flour, sugar, etc.) you can also stock up on things like good local dried beans and nuts in (or out of) their shells. If you really need a bag but want to avoid plastic, they have small paper bags beside the mushrooms – my favorite section :)Interested in writing green star reviews? An excellent little market- packs a large variety, from base to very high quality produce and other stuff in a small space. The downsides: tight spaces, difficult finding parking sometimes, aggressive and often downright rude customers- I had to ready myself for battle to shop here but was always worth it. Cashiers were always exceptionally friendly.

I love this market, its jammed to the gills with fresh produce and all kinds of great snacks and foodstuffs.If you are a fan of Rancho Gordo beans, they have pretty much every variety in stock; if you dont know RG beans it is totally worth stopping in here to pick up a couple of bags to try.Produce is top quality and selection is amazing. I dont think they carry meat, Ive not seen it in the store but I havent asked. They do have tofu and meat subs in the cooler case.

I hadnt been here for about 6 months. Wow! What a feast for the eyes! Im a Bowl regular so not so easily impressed but everything looked so crisp and fresh. The outside was awash in the oranges and reds of fruit, whereas inside were altars of greens, promising optimal nutrition and flavor. I grabbed a couple of red Little Gems, rosy rhubarb, fragrant Comics pears ... Not my weekly grocery run but I was having fun. Weekdays are best here, as it is a little tight.

Neighborhood grocery store with one of the most diverse selections of produce I have ever seen in California. Reasonable prices. I loved buying citrus there.. as you can really smell the oranges and grapefruit. This tells me they are not early picked and cold stored. Rather go here than Whole Foods because this is a single store with a long history in Berkeley. If you love diversity and freshness, you have to go here at least once.

While limited selection, they have good products that cover most of my daily needs.No meat, and limited cheese, but you can get those across the street.Nice to be able to get such high quality goods in a compact store, but it doesn’t take many people to make it feel crowded. A very nice local market with great seasonal and local produce offerings. Always impressed with how fresh and varied the food is. I especially the like the sweet basil bunches, their avocados, the lovely early girl tomatoes in the summer, and the diverse selection of mushrooms. They have a limited selection of some packaged processed meats and dairy (like sausages and cheeses) but for the most part I would say this is more for produce, bread (they stock Acme bread, with two shipments during the day so its fresh and never stale), some dried and canned goods, a small but good selection of wine and other shelf stable goods.

Always the best fresh produce. Its small but has everything you need. Their fresh squeezed orange juice is really good too. A lot of the produce is package free and a lot of the other food is packaged sustainably so its a good place to shop if youre working on being zero waste. It tends to be very busy (with limited parking) so just be ready to dodge aloof but aggressive shoppers lol. Hours are also limited, they close pretty early on weekdays. I like it a little more than Berkeley bowl, mostly because its less crowded and has most of the same stuff/quality.

This is an awesome market that I happened across a couple of months ago on accident. I have now been back nearly weekly. This place is like Berkeley Bowl with a huge selection of produce, but it is crowded into a small space that overflows into its parking area. The difference between Berkeley Bowl and Monterey Market is that it has a lot of items not often found in the latter, and at great prices. The employees are helpful and friendly, although many of them do not speak English so patience is required if you dont speak Spanish.I have lived in Berkeley since 2013 and I am sad I did not find this place sooner. The area around Monterey Market has a nice meat market, fish market, bakery, and nursery so it is a nice area to check out after shopping.

I love this place! I went to grad school here 30 years ago and it was my favorite spot to shop back then. My family just came back to spend a month back in Berkeley and it’s still an amazing place for fruits & veggies as well as various other specialty products. Put your Zen on and ignore the crowded and tight parking lot and tight isles. This is the place to go for produce. The selection of local and organic is the best around (but not limited to). They also have a great selection of unusual fruits and vegetables. As for the rest of your grocery shopping, they wont have the wide selection a big chain store will have, but they will have what you need.

Nice community grocery store with diverse selection of vegetables and fruit. Sometimes they have good deals on fruit thats in season. Selection on shelf Staples (oil, canned food, pasta, spices, etc.) tends to be limited and a bit overpriced (but thats generally how things are in smaller grocers). That said, you might find some commonly used Japanese/Middle Eastern/Mexican spices or foods. And the mushroom aisle is paradise for mushroom lovers!

Monterey Market is larger than a corner store yet not a full size supermarket. They carry the products most stores do not stock.Marmite yeast spread and fresh squeezed blood orange in quart and half gallon sizes along with grapefruit and orange juices for my shopping trip.Monterey Market is within a block of a butcher shop, fish market, tea shop, bakery, and Berkeley Horticulture for all your gardening needs.Monterey is a great market in a great location.

Freshly squeezed OJ, Reed avocados, Hubbard and Honeynut squash, apples from Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville, moon grapes, wide variety of fruits and vegetables both organic and conventional, and lots of other items not available at the usual chain stores. Even if its a little out of your way, its worth the drive as Gioia Pizza and Berkeley Horticultural Nursery are a couple of minutes walk away. Parking is available but the lot is small. We go grocery shopping here for quite sometime. The place has great organic produce and less expensive than Wholefoods market. Its hard to park and few instances we get overcharged by increasing the number of items than what you actually have. It is impossible to dispute your bill once you leave the store. Also we got unwanted items in our bags ie. deodorants especially when the store gets too crowded. I need to grocery shop and not too worry about getting ripped off. If you choose to go make sure that you check the items as they are scanned. My co worker had the same problem with this store.

This is my favorite place in the East Bay to do produce shopping. It is a small-ish space and they have managed to squeeze so much in. Parking can be difficult and sometimes there are long lines but there is a reason for that. They have organic and non organic options, clearly marked (and it also says where the item is from). They have a whole row of mushrooms, they have a bulk section, they carry bread from both Acme and Semifreddis. They have a smaller selection of most packaged items such as cheese, milk, cereal, pasta, jam etc. They carry some very unique produce items such as cape gooseberries that change seasonally. They also sell items that are ugly/past their prime. So you can pick up a bag of bruised organic tomatoes, or avocados that need to be make in to guac ASAP, for practically nothing.
