My friends and I went to Mujiri on a whim and were completely blown away by their service and food. Its a very small restaurant, but thankfully, we were able to find a table when we got there.For $25, you can get the nigiri combo, which includes 7 pieces of nigiri and chefs choice of hosomaki (small sushi rolls). For the 7 pieces of nigiri, either you can go with chefs selection or pick your own 7 pieces of nigiri from the available options without repeting any nigiri. The small sushi rolls were okay, but every piece of nigiri that we got was really good. It was fresh and juicy. Each nigiri had a thick cut of the fish. My personal favorites were- hotate (Hokkaido scallop), kurodai (Black snapper), toro (Spain bluefin fatty tun). My friend also really liked their blue fish. You can also ask them to sear the fish if you like it that way. I also tried their Santa Barbara uni. It was decent (not the best Ive had, but thankfully, it wasnt bitter or mushy). The nigiri combo was so good that we ended up ordering more nigiri from their a la carte menu. The service was great, too. Our server was very attentive and friendly.Honestly, this place is a hidden gem. This place beats some of the upscale omakase places where you will shell out a lot of money for mediocre food/sushi. Given how expensive sushi can be, its understandable to be skeptical of cheap sushi, but dont sleep on this place.

Excellent sushi. Do the nigiri combo and sashimi combo. Fish was ultra fresh, had a beautiful sheen, and rice had good texture and flavor. The black snapper nigiri was particularly good with some light torching. We’ll definitely be coming back again to pick out our favorites! And looking forward to bringing friends to this spot. Be sure to reserve as this tiny spot seems to always be right at capacity.

The fish here is very fresh and delicious. Though the nigiri are smaller than at many places we have been to, the price of the nigiri combo ($25) and the quality of the fish make it an incredible value. They also have a large selection of sakes and other beverages.

It was very easy to park my bike right in front of Mujiri. The sushi is outstanding and the nigiri special is a great deal. The service was good, nothing outstanding but comfortable. I’ve had their food via delivery as well and it’s always worth it.

Mujiri has the best sushi I’ve ever had! I ordered the nigiri combo with toro, iwana, hamachi, kanpachi, salmon, hotate, and kurodai. The two smoked ones are AMAZING and are a must-try. The combo includes chefs choice hand roll, and I got salmon. They have limited seating inside, some bar-style and a few tables. Parking is a little tricky but Mujiri is totally worth it!

Beautiful and delicious small sushi restaurant. Everything on the menu is delicious, you can never go wrong over ordering. You feel like a guest of the restaurant the way they serve and take care of you. Great place for a date or special occasion. Definitely get a reservation, there is a limited number of group tables.

Absolutely amazing nigiri. Wish there was one near us in NJ! Four of us came in on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch and there was no wait. We all took advantage of their nigiri special and when our food arrived, we were obsessed! Beautiful plating and the fish looked so fresh. I loved ALL of the nigiris. For the rest of the day, my husband and I would periodically and randomly think back on Mujiri and wish we could eat more! I think the only thing that stuck out to me was that they don’t have miso soup on the menu but their yuzu cheesecake made up for it. The cheesecake slice would probably be small for some people but for us, it was perfect. We also had the hojicha tea which came with unlimited refills. Parking was relatively easy to find. Highly recommend for an affordable but high quality sushi experience!

Had some nigiris. The fishes are not the best but okay, but the rice is horrible. Perhaps, the worst among all the sushis Ive ever had. Rice is sticky and wet, and the stickiness remains in my mouth for the next hour. The taste of cheap vinegar from the rice was...Hope you improve on the shari. The price was $60 excluding the tips.

As Japanese born and raised in Tokyo, I didnt expect about Sushi in the US, but much better than my expectations.As for Sake, in my personal opinion,Dassai 23 is the only Sake you should try in Dassai variety. You should avoid 35 and 45. Here, there is only 23!

Mujiri is one of my favorite sushi places! Its a shame that the store is very small, so its hard to dine in, so I usually just order to go or order for pick up. The quality is great for the price! I could eat this all day! They have different kind of fishes/dishes depending on their inventory, so I think thats quite cool.

I’ve only gotten their takeout nigiri set and it’s an easy 5/5 from me. It’s $25 and you can pick the nigiri you want. I usually order online and it’s ready in 15-20 minutes. A lot of fish are included in the $25, even toro, and they have other fish that are add-ons to the $25 price. Pictured is all pieces that are included in the $25.

Reading all of the positive reviews this place received had me eager to try it. However, it was quite disappointing to have their app tell me to pick up at a certain time and then arrive at that time to be told we had to wait another 20 minutes. Especially when the place wasn’t even that busy!The food: WAY too much wasabi on the rice for the nigiri- I couldn’t taste the fish for the most part, and several of the fish cuts were stringy. The prices were reasonable but I expected better quality, especially after the extra-long wait.Cannot recommend.

Absolutely delicious! Pictured is 2 nigiri combos (7 pieces plus maki roll each), 3 nigiris a la carte (2 pieces each) and the mini handrolls appetizer. Everything was very tasty, fresh is very fish, and the rice is the best. The restaurant is very small, seats maybe 20 people total - 10 dining and 10 at the sushi bar. Highly recommend!

We sat right at opening so naturally we opted for the bar table. I love smelling that aroma whenever they torch some fish. The best selling point for this restaurant is the simple menu and a choose your own adventure approach. The nigiri combo starts at $25 and comes with maki roll. Options like scallops and toro aren’t considered extra like uni. They also have some uncommon options like flying fish, Arctic char, beakfish, and more. The presentation for both the nigiri combos and sashimi omakase are pleasant. The quality was very noticeably fresh. The only con we found was the portion of the fish. They were thinly sliced than other places we’ve tried. This was more evident with the sashimi we ordered. I’d still recommend anyone in the area to come eat here!

This is the real deal. Enjoying this is an appreciation of craft.The selection of fish is amazing, including a few selections Id never heard of, but unlike other places they dont rely solely on the fish for flavor. Each piece (and the rice! And the soy sauce!) have nuance and depth and great combinations of flavor.In particular they dont skimp on the vegetarian maki - it was just as good as any fish option.

Was lucky enough to eat outdoors here on a Saturday. Seating is limited to the sushi bar indoors and one or two tables outside. We arrived right around opening and ordered the Sushi Nigiri set. You can let the chefs decide the order or pick your own. We let the chefs decide the first time and then each ordered another set with some of our favorites and ones we hadn’t tried. The toro and trout really stood. The belt fish had a nice smokey flavor from being torched. All the pieces were seasoned individually so no need for soy sauce. This place does get busy with takeout orders but I think that’s an indication of how good the food is. It’s worth the wait.

I saw an article about Mujiri in my newsfeed and decided to drop in for the $25 nigiri combo. Parking was easy on the side of San Pablo Ave. I was pleasantly surprised by the calm, welcoming atmosphere with nice music. Staffing included two sushi chefs one hostess, and one waitress. A qr code for their daily menu was available to scan, which brought up a small, but enticing menu. I ordered the seaweed salad and chefs choice nigiri combo, and chose to add 1 beak fish since I have never tried it before. The salad was presented first. It was delicious, with citrus and sesame notes. As I finished my glass or water, the the hostess provided a refill within 5 seconds. She was on her game, which is something I appreciate when dining out. The nigiri was brought out next, and she let me know which fish were on my plate. I was delighted when I noticed nikiri sauce painted over the top of each selection... thats something you dont see at many sushi places and tells me I do not need to dip my nigiri in soy sauce and Wasabi. The nikiri application was subtle with a few small drops hitting the simple bamboo leaf on my wooden plate. Next to the nigiri was a 6 piece tuna roll. I started with the nigiri from right to left. I was so excited to dig in I accidentally ate the Toro nigiri before I snapped the photo in my review. It was soft and buttery, and the small dab of Wasabi in between the rice and fish was perfect. The roll came next. I decided to to dip it in a small amount of soy, with wasabi to add an extra kick. The hostess approached me and asked if I needed anything else, which I declined because the serving size was perfect. I paid my tapping my phone on a portable terminal and added a 25% tip, which I am happy to give when I receive 5 star service. I left full and happy. I found my new spot and will return again, plus will tell everyone I know about this amazing bay area gem. 💥🍣💥

A fun little place for some sushi and tea. My friends and I walked in last Friday evening and had a few different rolls. They do not have a wide selection, but the sushi they do have is good. The best part of the meal was the hot brown tea they kept serving, which was very pleasant on a chilly night.The place is worth stopping by, but I probably wont return.

An unassuming, yet thoughtful place to dine at. What feels an intentional decision to focus on great food and terrific service. A small place that seats just a couple dozen people (at most). The best you can get at a reasonable price in the Bay Area. In fact, the best outside of Japan so far I’ve had in the states at a reasonable price. Sure you can go to a Michelin star sushi place and have similar or perhaps better quality, but here it’s affordable. Very high quality fish, friendly staff. Good beer and sake selection.

FLAMES. My bf and I love this place so much. Mujuri has amazing sushi for $25. We always get chef’s choice and we have never been disappointed. I would highly recommend actively asking for the scallops or negi toro mini hand roll if it is available because those are incredible! The servers are all so sweet and attentive and make you feel like family. The sake selection is not extensive but it’s all pretty great. If you reserve ahead of time, there’s a $11 hold to make sure you show up. There is typically a wait of 20-40 mins but if you call ahead, they’re pretty realistic on telling you wait times. The space is intimate and there isn’t a lot of seating so make sure you’re realistic about wait times.

This little sushi outpost is an unbelievable find! Ultra-fresh, high-quality sashimi, nigiri and a small but delicious selection of rolls. This edomae style of sushi is usually found only at expensive omakase hotposts. The nigiri set with 7pcs + one maki is a steal for $25.

This is one of the first places I visited after moving the bay area. I liked how simple their menu was but loved the quality of their food. Theyve been consistent every single time Ive gone. Not exactly sure what the hype is about. Went to pick up my online order - walked in the restaurant which was half full and...nothing. No greeting, no eye contact. A couple walks in behind me and they greet and seat them. I have to take a step back so they can be seated. Nothing. I have to take another step so the server can walk by. Still nothing. Second couple comes in and is asked if they can be helped, so I kinda throw my hands up, at which point the server says, Have you been helped? I havent even been acknowledged yet. Thats a pickup for Alex? Not exactly.Get home. The nigiri was decent, until the next to last piece which was definitely past its sell by date. The pickled ginger helped get the taste out of my mouth, mostly because it was very harsh, like some bleach had snuck into the mix. So, likely never going back again.

I can’t stop coming here. This place is fantastic. Its analogous to the current dating scene. You show up with low expectations, just so you arent too disappointed when things arent good, but, in all actuality, the place surprises you with the fantastic food and ambiance. Hard pass - never again. Brought home take out for 4 people. Genuinely the smallest cuts of fish I have ever seen in my life at any sushi bar in the world... and I have eaten sushi on 4 continents (a connoisseur). The pieces were no bigger than my pinky finger, no exaggeration. They have no excuse (especially considering their very high $$$ cost) and the manager even tried to actively deceive me when I pointed out how unacceptably minuscule the cuts of fish were. One hostess admitted to me it was a new chef since my last experience. Then the manager tried to defend (deceive me) this absurdity with such nonsense as oh the sauce makes the fish shrink and - this one is a riot - the cuts are natural (whatever does that even mean??). They could have done any number of things to resolve such a rip off experience but they did not even try. No refund (not even partial), no attempt to find a compromise, nothing. Just a list of absurdities in an attempt to defend the smallest pieces of sushi I have ever seen in my life from any sushi bar I have ever eaten at in the world (a very large number of sushi restaurants over 40+ years), no joke and no exaggeration... and for exorbitant rip off prices no less. Will never solicit this sushi bar ever again. Vehemently do not recommend.

I ordered at 5:35, they told me to come and pick it up at 6:35 PM. I got there, I told the waitress my name four times. Other people have gotten there and left before me.. And then she pulled a bag from the shelf which was sitting there for a while. And she asked me for my name. So this place is extremely unorganized. I happen to live in the building. And I could’ve waited in my apartment for 35 minutes. The sushi better be good

Nigiri is really good here. Precut so it makes it fast to serve. A small spot, gets busy so you have to be aggressive with the server to get their attention. Everything is overall pretty good, but they make you make an appt through a third party app that charges $5 per person. Kinda silly to pay for a reservation. Also, you cant call or make a reservation from their website or Yelp. Probably their one downfall, fish selection is solid. Might still try other Bay Area spots.

Lets address the elephant in the room, the price. Yes it looks expensive, but for the quality you get, its well worth it. This is by far the best sushi Ive ever eaten. Every piece I had was an explosion of flavor. Each piece of fish melted in my mouth.Now for those complaining about the wooden box you get for take out. And it being a waste its more environmentally friendly than your standard to go plastic boxes. Also, for the price youre paying, the wooden box helps you feel the experience of food youre getting because it doesnt feel cheap.I highly recommend trying this gem.

Great new sushi spot on the west side of San Pablo, right across from Novel Brewery. They have two little tables outside currently, but run a thriving to-go business, which generally sells out nightly. I am not the biggest sushi fan, but their nigiri combo was amazing. The fish was incredibly tender, with no odor or fishy flavor.While some reviews indicate issues with small portions sizes, I think the quality outweighs quantity in this instance. Others have disliked the wood boxes they send their food off with, but it engendered a lively debate of energy and water costs of the wood vs paper. Both are better than plastic.Highly recommend trying this nice restaurant.

I can’t believe anyone is leaving an even slightly negative review about Mujiri. This is a fine dining destination masquerading as a neighborhood hole in the wall. Incredibly fresh fish, moreso than other sushi restaurants in Oakland and Berkeley. And a wide variety including rotating specialties that you simply do not find outside of omakase that cost hundreds. This is an absolute gem. Order one sashimi combo and one nigiri combo - $75 flat for a luxurious meal that feeds two easily. Many other reviews complain about small serving sizes or it being overpriced…what? These folks must be used to supermarket cut rolls. Or they’re paying for a delivery fee and really complaining about that. Order now before mujiri sells out for the night as they often do

There is only one table for outdoor seating and don’t even get take out. Almost 1.5 hours of waiting for take out and after patiently waiting that long, I still didn’t get my food. I had to get a refund. Poor customer service. ridiculous! They shouldn’t advertised outdoor seatings when there is barely room to move inside. Almost a fire hazard. Tiny space. Just tried this new spot -- and its absolutely fantastic! Delicious, unbelievably fresh nigiri served in delightful little wooden trays. Best nigiri, sashimi, and rolls that Ive had in Oakland.Keep in mind that the focus here is on the fish, so dont expect to see a lot of fancy preparations and fried stuff and sauces thatd youd see at a more Americanized sushi place.Check their Instagram for the latest menu -- they said itll change almost every day.Would love to see them add a few sidewalk tables, but who knows, theyre just getting started.

We popped in by chance after going to IKEA and LOVED the food and the atmosphere. Chefs and staff were very friendly and attentive. Highly recommend the nigiri combo and the Sakura mochi. The squash maki with the Bambi sake was also an amazing combo that the server recommended. We’d be regulars if we didn’t live so far away!

Truly the best sushi Ive had in the East Bay. Was craving my fav place in SF ...but hitting the usual EB places - meh. Then this one popped up in my news feed of a NOSH article and I tried that day. When I came to America, I tried many sushi restaurants, but I was not satisfied with all of them. But its very delicious here. Its very fresh, and the raw fish doesnt fall apart. Its 95% the same taste Ive had in Japan, and better than most Japanese restaurants. The downside is that it is very popular so there is a long wait. Id like to write that its expensive, but considering its American, its reasonable. It is presented beautifully in a very pretty wooden disposable bowl. A place to eat when you want to find peace of mind and body.
