This is my parents go-to place when they first moved to San Francisco in the early 2000s. It’s good to see the place is still open. The food is still good, and I would recommend giving them a try. I would caution that you use their letter/number combinations when ordering - the person we spoke to spoke neither English nor Mandarin. We were lucky that my wife speaks Cantonese. Your mileage may vary.

Rudest female owner. She screamed at you if you asked her a question whether it’s about a charge or how long to wait for a table. It’s very small and has very limited tables. I overheard a conversation between her and a customer who asked why she charged $2 per person to have brought in birthday cake served in the restaurant. She yelled : of course because she had to provide plates and forks! After waiting for half an hour, we ordered half size steam chicken which was served cold 🥶, a steam black bass, spare ribs, roasted pigeon, a traditional Cantonese soup, and Chinese broccoli with garlic. Food were served out to table with an astonishing speed as if everything had been precooked behind the scenes. General speaking, food tasted good except the cold chicken. But I got severe stomach upset 30 minutes after the meal. Ran to restroom non stop and still have stomach problem after two days! Wonder if it’s chicken or the fish or whatever?!🤣😰🤬🤢🤮 Will not recommend this restaurant.

If you are expecting hospitality, it only exists when you actually have a table. Otherwise you will never know when you can have a table.. and they dont accept reservation for small groups.Food is great, I missed it a lot. But I often cannot get a table so Im sad.

Second time and it was not close to first time. Sweet sour pork chops were limp and soggy and the sauce normally sticks to the deep fried pork. Had the steam chicken + pork stomach. They put 3x too much hot mustard/wasabi and made it difficult to eat. Fried squab was great and wished the other dishes were the same. Im guessing since the place was full, they rushed the food and the quality went down.

Recommended for family meal or big groups meal. There is few small tables, so if your group is less than 4 people, you may need to wait for a little bit long.For food, I recommended house special spare ribs and tossed chicken with port belly.

Worse customer service in the Bay Area! We were told we were the first one on the waiting list. We waited for 30min. Then all in a sudden, a waitress let someone she knew but not on the waiting list take the table in front of everyone who were on the waiting list. And she was very rude to argue with us. Also the bathroom stinks. Will never return!

Ok, so just got this again and it was as amazing as it was the first time. Squab and house fried rice are both fantastic. Got spare ribs too last time that were also great but we realized the 2 dishes are plenty for 2 people even with leftovers. The only reason why this place has bad reviews is because the service is very authentic cantonese - you have to flag down the server pretty aggressively to get service if you are able to eat there and they are not super friendly- just makes it feel more legit to me! Pro tip- cash only under like $40

As an ABC, I eat alot of Chinese food with my family so I can be kind of picky with this. To my surprise this place had a wait on a Tuesday night and rightfully so! Probably the only place with a wait on a Tuesday. It was interesting to see a variety of Chinese folks in here. ABC’s, multigenerational ABC’s, Taiwainese, HongKongers, and mainland Chinese folk. Their sweet and sour ribs and chicken with pork offal were special. Pang lang jang, have the squad pull up!

Good Chinese food with family style portions. Although not on the menu the combination fried rice is quite flavorful. The menu is large but not organized by meat types so just take your time to read everything. Sometimes when calling ahead it seems confusing but they get it right. Salt and pepper deep fried pork chops are a solid choice.

Food is fantastic. The service is terrible. The lady at the front is the cashier, the Host, She’s answering calls taking food orders she has no time to help who’s in the restaurant. I understand COVID set a lot of restaurants back but there’s no excuse to stand there for 10-15 min waiting to place a order Togo. The place can look a little nicer but it’s clean and it works. Food is great so it out weighs the bad.

This is a great place to bring your family. Be sure they are very hungry the food here is awesome. Good Cantonese style cooking. Consistent quality with generous portions. Great value dinner combos. But I would recommend takeout until they replace a particularly rude waitress. Very rude with an angry attitude. When my wife asked for a box to pack up the steamed white rice we were charged for, she said we cant take the rice home. What?! When my wife asked for a box for the rice again, the waitress rudely blurted, Why dont you ask the boss? When the lady manager or owner heard this, she quickly apologized and told the waitress to get us the box my wife asked for. On the way out, my wife told the manager her waitress doesnt know how to serve. The manager apologized repeatedly, but we will stick with takeout if we come back.

Middle of the road Cantonese style restaurant with a bountiful selection of dishes to choose from. Some things on the menu are not translated to English which made it a bit difficult to order but otherwise ilit was fine. I had the BBQ ribs cutlets, snow peas and mixed mushrooms with beef. All were well prepared and tasted great. Make sure to double-check your bill though for the correct price.

Rude receptionist. Rude waiter. They tell you to write down your name & no. Of party, and yet just automatically scratch your reservation without calling out your name or your no. So disappointing to be waiting outside the restaurant in chilly winds only to find out we were waiting for nothing.In the few minutes I was inside, the receptionist called out in a soft voice 3 other successive nos. & just crossed out these nos. Without waiting for a beat for any of those standing within nor outside the restaurant to come forward. I also saw & heard a waiter arguing with an elderly Chinese about their reservation too. The food is good but if its busy dont even bother coming here. the majority of the crowd waited here for over 3 hours for TAKEOUT. come here if no ones around but literally dont waste ur time and energy waiting for food you dont know if you’re even going to get. very disorganized and didnt do anything for the people. i witnessed people who waited two hours who had their order lost, their orders not started on after 2 hours, and someone who ordered a week before wait 3 hours too. they would tell us our order was almost done if we told them we wanted to leave, and keep us waiting for hours. seriously not worth the time.

This is based off of only one experience.We went during what seemed like peak hours, so its understandable that the quality might suffer. But its what made the wait not worth it in my eyes.The wrappers for the ha gows did not taste very fresh. The texture didnt have the proper softness, almost as if they were made a few days ago. There were similar experiences with other dishes, which made is why i questioned if it was truly worth the wait.Unfortunately, it was not. Im just hoping it was just an off day.

This is one of the better Chinese restaurant in the sunset area. This place is surprising popular amoung the second gen chinese. The food is good and the service isnt bad either. Authentic Cantonese cuisine and environment. If you have a friend who speaks Cantonese, it will make communication easier if you take them along. One of the least Americanized menus in San Francisco so might taste foreign to many unaccustomed pallettes; for instance the Sweet and Sour Pork is much fattier. For folks who want a safe bet go with a beef dish. Specialty is the squab and of course seafood. Can be crowded and wait time can be up to or even over an hour Arrive before 5:30 if possible. I am not writing about how good or how bad the food was . I am writing how bad the owner was. During lunch time, my Vietnamese friend ordered $18 dollars worth of food . The owner refused to accept credit card unless she spend $28 dollars. She did not had cash at that time so she had to ran out and get cash . While she was waiting for her food, there was an Westerner came order $8.00 worth of food and had no cash. The owner simply smile and said to him that It is O.K you can pay with credit now, next time. New ownership and a new menu. Eclectic with a little bit of every type of Chinese cuisine. Some unusual offerings including SE Asian and Northern Chinese in addition to standard Cantonese fare. Not much of an identity or focus. Maybe they are trying to please a wide range of appetites. Mostly locals thought who may remember the Old Jumbo as a Cantonese seafood restaurant of high quality. This is one of those places where its more about quantity than quality. A lot of the dishes were huge, and we had a good amount of leftovers to take home. The food in general was ok - nothing outstanding but nothing horribly awful.Appetizer Combo - Its one of those plates with the jellyfish, pork shank, and sliced beef. I liked how they mixed pickled radishes, carrots, and cilantro with the pork shank. It was like a banh mi without the bread. The sliced beef was pretty tasty, too. I could taste the five spice used in the braising liquid, which made the beef tender and sweet. Jellyfish wasnt good, and was just bland.Fish Maw and Sea Cucumber Soup - Pretty good. In addition to the sweet seafood flavors, there was a good amount of Jinhua Ham that added saltiness and umami. The soup was a little too starchy, but the flavor wasnt bad.Braised Fish Maw and Sea Cucumber - I dont think Ive ever seen so much fish maw on one plate before. There was sooo much of it piled in the middle mixed with some sea cucumber, shiitake mushrooms, and other various edible fungi. Some of the fish maw was undercooked so it was a little more rubbery. The flavor was still ok. The mushrooms and fungi helped put the seafood flavor at the forefront.Lobster with Supreme Broth - The lobster was cooked well. It was smooth with a firm bite but wasnt tough or too chewy. The sauce couldve been seasoned better to bring out the lobsters flavor, but it was still decent.Stir Fried Sticky Rice (Loh Mai Fan) - I really liked that theres a lot of goodies mixed in with the rice. It was packed with dried shrimp, Chinese cured bacon, and Chinese sausage. This gave the rice a lot of highlighting flavors, but the rice itself couldve been more savory. Just a little more basic seasonings like soy sauce and sugar wouldve made the rice that much better.New Jumbo works well as local neighborhood dinner spot. This will never be a place that non-locals or hipsters seek out. Its one of those restaurants thats there when you dont feel like cooking.

Jumbo has been in the neighborhood for a while. It gets really crowded on the weekends, but you can probably get a table on a weekday evening. They have most normal Chinese fare like walnut prawns and Mongolian beef. One specialty they serve is the squab.
