The place to get Japanese food, snacks and groceries. They also have a small sit-in area so you can eat your sushi, udon soup or fried Japanese cakes. Its a niche supermarket for Japanese fare.

Bought a bunch of ready to eat raw fish packages here, found at least 4 worms in the ankimo (monk fish liver). It was the most disgusting Ive ever seen in my food. Brought it back to complain to the store manager and he only refunded some of the fish in the receipt, he said its normal to have worms in fish, even the cashier said he has seen customers complained about it before. Is this how this market handles their sushi/sashimi items? If so, no thanks. Avoid shopping here.

Its close and has everything I need. The produce here is better than anywhere else Ive been. Great tasting and super fresh.The fish though... Once upon a time it was great quality. A year or two ago someone else started cutting the fish. Now you have to be careful of scales and bones in your sashimi and bento. The fish is not as fresh and firm as it used to be. I was hoping the person just needed time to be properly trained and practice. It has only gotten worse. Having worked with professionals in the industry, Ive seen the gamut. The people who dont keep the product clean tend to be the same ones that dont wash their hands after using the restroom or wear the eternal gloves. Aka one pair of gloves for everything - trash, making your food, etc. The quality in your work shows your level of care. I really hope they replace whoever the joker/s is handling the fish and bento.

Here is a store with a decent selection of Japanese goods and items that you might find in another Japanese market. The prices are not too cheap, but probably just about right for the San Francisco-area market. There is a small deli/good counter at the front of the store that you can eat into store (chairs and tables nearby) out carry out with you. Parking is free, but its shared with all the other stores in the plaza.

The good is great! Staff training not good (especially Andrew). We were charged with the plastic bag in advanced despite we didn’t ask for it and we have hold our purchased item in hands. We can not return the bag and not eco friendly store! Require double ID for buying alcohol.

I love this place because they have always been able to provide quality take out entrees, even through the coronavirus pandemic. My local Cupertino Marukai is not able to match Nijiya in terms of maintaining consistent quality in the take out foods.Be advised that there are staffing issues here like every other retail store in the South Bay so you will have to wait a bit to checkout, even on weekdays. Plan ahead for that!

Called at 9 am to see when their restaurant opened. Male employee on the phone said the restaurant opened at 8:30 am. I drove and spent precious gasoline looking for hot food at their restaurant, only to be greeted by a sign that said the restaurant was open at 11 am. I asked the attendant at the restaurant cash register and she said the restaurant was open at 11 am. The cashier said the one who takes the phone calls is the manager. I called again to see why the manager of all people would lie to me about when their restaurant opens. The female manager who received the call not only defended the previous misinformation from their employee, they also did so with a downright shoddy excuse. She said that Nijiya calls the refrigerated ready made bento section the restaurant and the actual restaurant the hot deli. Thats a hot excuse right there. Their own restaurant cashier referred to the place as a restaurant. Who in their right minds would say call and aisle of refrigerated onigiri a restaurant? The blatant lie and general unapologetic attitude of the managers working at Nijiya, who apparently lie to customers for fun, has destroyed my trust for this business. Unfortunately I cannot, in good conscience, buy goods at this place again.

A small quiet grocery store with lots of Japanese exclusive products. Even if you dont read Japanese, everything in the store has a label and translated instructions on a sticker attached to the item. There is a deli section where you can get warm meals for now and chilled ones perfect for packed lunches! The staff is not intrusive and very nice and there is usually samples on the weekend! Once a month they have specials on meat and have events often that come with deals on certain items! This place is downright lovely!

Good variety of Japanese staples, and mostly at reasonable prices. There is a hot food bar as well as prepared food that is refrigerated. The only thing I would caution against is that a significant number of the groceries are labeled only in Japanese so its helpful to bring a more literate friend if youre able.

Great market with Japanese specialties. My top two favorite things about this place are the little hot food stand on the left (along with some ready-to-eat sushi next to it) as you walk in the entrance, and the amazing selection of sakes. If youre already in the area, get some reasonably priced ramen and some fun snacks (may I suggest shrimp chips?) before you head out. This place is a hidden gem.

This is a great place, and one of only two in the South Bay area, to shop for Japanese food. Items you cannot find at other local stores can be found here. The vegetables, fresh fruit, fresh fish and meats are especially good; for example, the thinly sliced beef for sukiyaki and whole fresh fish. They must have contracts with local Japanese farmers to get such good fresh produce. We use Nijiya as a specialty shop for Asian food we cannot get elsewhere, because staples are expensive compared to other grocery stores.

I had heard amazing things about Nijiya from a friend of mine. However, I found their selection to be somewhat lacking.Im a frequent patron of Mitsuwa, which, despite being far more crowded, always has everything I want in stock. Nijiya had few options for sashimi and butchered meats, and only a handful of my regular brands for other products, like katsuobushi. Their convenience food also had been sitting out for a while - everything that could oxidize had. And the alcoholic offerings are minimal in comparison, albeit more affordable.I could see myself visiting Nijiya in the future when I dont want to deal with Mitsuwas horrendous parking. Unfortunately, I have too many staple ingredients I can seemingly only find at Mitsuwa, like my preferred yuzu juice.

One of the few exclusively Japanese markets. Large selection of condiments, sauces, sakes and frozen foods typically only available in Japan. Great pre-packaged meals like Karaage, Tonkatsu, Yakisoba, and Teriyaki Bento. My employer basically stranded me in the area, without a vehicle, for five weeks. This shop was the only thing that I was really able to enjoy. I got to experience a lot of strange new foods here. Some of it was fantastic, and some of it was revolting. I rarely read the English translation on the back, so it was often a gamble what I was getting... at least at first. If variety is the spice of life, this place was a spice shop. All of the staff was extremely friendly and always helpful.

Fairly small but well-stocked Japanese supermarket. It seemed to be the same size as the San Jose location, but with one caveat. I visited specifically with a bento and Japanese supermarket sushi craving... but the selection here was disappointing.The bento boxes looked a bit sad - the salmon looked overcooked and things were just haphazardly packed. Nigiri looked like the fish was slopped on the rice. Just not up to standard. The San Jose location was much, much better.I’ll probably try again in a few months, but I was sad to see the prepared food selection. I did get a loaf of Nijiya-brand tofu bread (yep, read that right - it was actually pretty good; can’t really tell it’s made from tofu!) so there may be some Nijiya-specific gems to look out for.

Hate the parking lot, but thats not their fault.Prices of Japanese and Korean foods can be kind of high in the area, but I dont find Nijiya to be unreasonable considering. Their beer selection is also superb, although not being able to buy Strong Zeroes or Yebisu Beer is a bit disappointing, but that’s really something we have to live with outside of Japan. UPDATE: this store has the best Covid protocol! Hand sanitizer at entrance and wipes for carts. Prices have come down and the produce is as fresh as ever.Compared to Marukai and Mitsuwa, Nijiya is slightly more expensive but it is more conveniently located with ample parking. The produce quality is top-notch and there are more organic selections available. I come here for its meat and seafood. The seafood selection is super awesome--you can get hard-to-find items such as Aka ebi (red prawns), Copper River salmon, and fresh whole sardines. Seriously, their sardines smell like the ocean and not fishy. They publish sale items every week in their website. So, be sure to check it out!

Nijiya market is located next to Smart and Final on El Camino near Grant Road. If you are trying to build a new business to make enough money to make your housing dreams come true, youll be buying supplies at Smart and Final, and I do. If you are keeping yourself healthy and happy in the meantime, then you will be shopping at Nijiya. They have amazingly yummy stuff that cannot be found at mainstream stores. My favorite stuff are the kinds of things that can be whipped together into a one-pot meal by my favorite kind of home chef, the girl who never uses a recipe. Nijiya is where I might get lucky enough to see her, and compare recipes about love, life, finances, health, and hope. Thank you Nijiya for what you offer.

Hands down the most authentic market I can find anywhere in the Bay Area.Ive lived and worked in Japan for a while and as with all places you spend a lot of time at, you get really use to having certain things that eventually you just cant live without anymore. When I settled back into the Bay Area I struggled to find those little details I grown so accustomed too until I stumbled across this market chain. There is no western product in this store, only the brands you know from Japan. I find it simply amazing and comforting to have this resource so close to home.Oh, and they even have a little hot food deli just in the door!

I love this market. Like a tiny slice of Japan, but that does also include higher prices. The staff is friendly and everything is super clean and well put together. Sometimes I just wander around here staring at perfectly rinsed foreign vegetables and squint at the kanji on noodle packages as a way to relax and imagine the possibilities. Vey nice store selling Japanese type food; ranging from fresh to frozen. Decent variety of veggies, noodles, sauces, condiments, meats and sweets. The bento box section ... next to the food to go counter ... has a very generous selection of prepared sushi and other delicious Japanese style lunch treats. Whatever you dont find here, you can always drive over to 99 Ranch (which is about a block away) and maybe find it there.

Worked here before, and here are some must get and must avoid:Must avoid: negitoro. This is not true negitoro. We actually mix red grind tuna and mixed it with artificial fat to make it pink. Avoid at always.Must get:Yellow tail ( hamachi) bone. The package that contains ribcage is always removed from sashimi grade fish. So it is always fresher. For a relatively small market, this branch of Nijiya surprisingly usually manages to satisfy our Japanese grocery shopping needs. We like their rice selection.On a recent visit, we managed to find the fresh tantanmen that we couldnt find at a larger Japanese supermarket further south. I was also delighted to see Hokkaido Jyaga Pokkuru, normally only available in Hokkaido. And they seem to have a good supply of Pear-flavored Gari Gari Kun popsicles.Their snack selection is excellent. Hubby loves the プッチーザ. I get the Jagabee options (interestingly Mitsuwa doesnt seem to have either of these snacks). Their drink selection is good too; on our last visit they had the larger size of Karadameguri-cha which is unusual. Fruits and vegetables are pricier than Trader Joes but they have more leafy greens and different kinds of mushroom than most American stores. The Mt View location has more selections than their store in San Mateo and less connected than Nikita in Japan Town SF. Cheap but yummy Nikita ramen comes with lots of chashu (pork) and yummy egg. Its been a long time since I last shopped at the store, but this morning ( around 10:30 July 7, 2017) I went there to buy few items. I found what I needed and waited in line behind two people at a cashiers. 16 years later, still consider this a nifty little place. Used to drop in for bento box lunches when I worked on Castro in the early 2000s. Visited maybe 10 years later and the same Mexican staff cashiers! Amazing. Oddly, these days, perhaps they received complaints or just wanted to go more authentic, but those familiar faces are now gone. The bento boxes appear to have more variety these days but also seem more commercial. Ginger now in plastic packets inside the boxes, kinda like how shoyu comes in those single serving packets. Times change, I guess, and so does the bento box experience. The place seems small, but there is no shortage of selection. Japanese junk food, several mochi brands, fresh fish and meat, produce,... with all these options, one can make this place their primary grocery store.
