Great little Japanese market. Come a little before noon for premade sushi. It doesnt arrive first thing in the morning. Fresh organic produce. Frozen staples and lots of snacks. Its a small store so dont expect everything to be here. Nice selection of meat to do shabu shabu with.

Super small (but fresh) matsu party tray, was sad to see how tiny the pieces were compared to the $60 cost. The Fuji tray was more consistent with the pictures. I might try some other Nijiyas and see if the Matsu is as small as the San Mateo location.

Its a great place to buy Japanese groceries and fresh produce. The store is super cold so take your jacket. This place is super clean. Friendly staffs. It has a huge parking lot . Please check the store hours before you go.

This Nijiya serves as almost an oasis of Japanese groceries in the Peninsula. Obviously theres a huge Japanese market in the South Bay and theres Japan Town in SF. But for the Peninsula, Nijya stands strong. It isnt particularly big nor does it have a healthy selection. Also the prices arent cheap. However, they do have the essentials.Nijiya has been a life-saver whenever we run out of Japanese ingredients such as natto, uni, ikura, calpico, sake, wasabi, and other essentials. Again, we wouldnt do our daily groceries here but for the absolute necessary stuff, were so happy to have Nijiya nearby.

I love Nijiya! They have the freshest sushi fish of any local Asian market. They might not be as big as some of the other markets in the area but for fresh high quality fish you cant beat them! I only go here when Im making sushi.

Nijiya Market is a small Japanese grocery store. The Japanese market offers groceries, alcohol, and kitchen wares. I happened to shop at the store during my visit to the shopping center. Nijiya Market reminded me of Daiso, Suruki Market, and a badly stocked dollar store. The store staff were very unfriendly but I didnt expect a super happy friendly staff in such a small worn store. I did purchase a couple of items and everything was over priced as expected. I give Nijiya 5 stars for surviving.

8/2020-Bought 2 packages of sashimi-one variety (salmon, tuna squid) and the other whole salmon. All but the tuna were completely disgusting and foil smelling right out after opening. Had to throw away. 5 min to get home and not warm. 2019-Ready made sushi and rolls are reasonable price and pretty good tasting. Bigger selection of traditional mochi than expected. The seafood rolls ($10) were huge and fresh.

Good selection of locally grown organic vegetables, in addition to ready to cook and prepared foods. Smaller footprint than the south bay stores, but offset by reduced foot traffic for a faster shipping experience.Six foot distance markings are clearly set up outside the store, and safely roped off in the probate parking lot. As of 8/3, allowing limited numbers of shoppers in the store at a time, as well as shorter hours.

Local Japanese market with good sales on my favorite Japanese beers. The staff recognizes me and lets me know whats on sale. Very friendly in a tough industry. I like the easy parking and large store space versus the very cramped store in SF Japan Town. Produce section has a good variety and is very clean. Good stuff!!

GIANT GARLIC AND GIANT NEGIThis place has almost everything I was looking for. Its a nice little shop with so many gems and one of the widest drink varieties Ive seen. Staff is helpful and they check you out super fast. I go here for my spices and sauces; their sushi section is also very tasty.

Just found out about this Nijiya recently and decided to go check it out. I liked that the store is neat, clean, and well stocked. Also, parking was easy to find.The vegetable and fruit selection looked pretty good. Some vegetables were more fresh than others. The meat and seafood were somewhat disappointing. Although the beef products looked good, the chickens looked very sad. Most of the fish products didnt look very fresh.The dry food and snack aisles were easy to shop at. I really liked the variety of Japanese snacks available. I also tried some bento boxes, which totally failed my expectations. The curry tasted like instant ones. The sliced salmon on the assorted chirashi had bones in it. In addition, the sushi rice was very mushy. I would say the bents here are the worst I have seen in the Bay Area.To sum it up, if you need ingredients for cooking Japanese dishes, this is a good go-to place. For other non-Asian grocery items, its probably better (quality and price wise) to get them from elsewhere.

Solid local Japanese market with everything you need to make an authentic Japanese dinner. This spot also has premade sushi and sashimi to go, but does not have a fish counter.This is one of my go to spots for picking up sauces, specialty items, and more when cooking Japanese dinners. I enjoy shopping here -- so much goodies to have! I love their rice triangles. I remember when they were under $2, but its understandable with inflation. Theyre still so good and fresh, and definitely still cheaper than in Hawaii! :P. I just like that they have so many choices and the prices are still reasonable for Japanese products- some are actually still cheaper than if I were to buy them at a non-Japanese market.

Its a small grocery store, but theyve got all your essentials. The American brands are very limited as everything is either imported or local. I love the assortment of ready made meals. Be sure to drop in during meal times to see the full selection. Consequently, the store gets busiest during lunch and dinner. If you dont like crowds, drop in after lunch. Parking is a lot shared with the whole plaza and its often full. Employees are nice and you see the same faces every day

Covid-19 review: A good place to get some japanese staples like soba, somen, udon, taiyaki, onigiri, sushi, mochi. They have limited the number of people inside, but you will definitely pass people in the aisles. Checkout lines are spaced and there are shields at the registers. If you bring your own bag you must fill it outside after you leave the store. (You can bring the baskets outside) It was not too busy when I went on Monday afternoon, although I did wait for a few minutes outside to maintain the capacity limit of customers inside.

Also selection of soy products seems limited to me, for example, there is only plain tofu with the exception of one. A pretty small Japanese market but its a convenient place to stop by to find specialized items. I always come at the end of the day for discounted sushi (though theres been less discounts during my recent visits). Actual fish quality is honestly pretty bad but I cant resist. Otherwise they carry various Japanese salad dressings that I love, various Asian snacks, etc. Not a bad grocery store but not somewhere Id do my regular grocery shopping.

Great Japanese market! We like to pick up sushi lunch boxes and onigiri here, and recently ordered sushi party platters for Fathers Day that were excellent and very reasonably priced for the quality and quantity! The party platter menu is on the website and they recommend ordering at least a day ahead of time. It included a variety of sushi including many that our kids liked (inari sushi, California rolls, smoked salmon and avocado), and the fish is very fresh.I havent had a chance to slowly browse the store but they seem to have a little bit of every Japanese grocery essential you would want, from produce to beverages (including sake and wine), prepared foods, dry goods, and drugstore and kitchen items.During Covid-19 they have had a well-marked line outside with 6 ft spacing and are wiping down baskets and carts. Short wait to get into the store because they limit the number of customers. I felt very safe.

I love Nijiya Market SM, while small, it carries most of the Japanese goods I need.Everything from natto and organic miso to premade bentos. Pricier than 99 Ranch Market, but one of the best places to pick up Japan specific ingredients and products that have multiple locations around the Bay. Their bento boxes are also rather good, and their own branded farmed products never disappoint (in particular their soy milk and soy sauce come to mind). The San Mateo location is not huge, but much easier to go to than say the San Francisco location, and they offer a decent selection of sake and shochu at the San Mateo location.

Nijiya is a small but mighty market with almost all the goods you need for a Japanese (or American) kitchen. First, the produce and the seafood is often exceptional. The packaged food items are of wide variety, often direct from Japan and replaced often (theres plenty of people shipping here, so much of the inventory turns over quickly). Highly recommend Nijiya.

One of 3 Japanese grocery stores in a 3 mile radius. This is the corporate chain compared to the 2 mom and pops in the area. Whats cool about this place is that they have seasonal Japanese food, beverage and snack events that showcase the different regions of Japan, including Okinawa throughout the year and fresh Japanese / Asian fruits and vegetables. Most of the stuff seemed decent, and I really wanted to like this market but Im baffled by their customer service. I bought some peeled garlic to use the same day and when I opened it discovered mold in the middle of the pack (not visible when purchasing). I called and was told to bring it back. I took it back the next day (~30 min drive) and told them Id be perfectly happy to just exchange it with a better pack. There was only one pack left so I grabbed it. I was then told to pay the $0.50 difference. What? I just drove half an hour (with gas I paid for) because your store put out rotting garlic... I dont have another option because there are no other packs to grab. Such a silly way to lose a customer.(Obviously I couldve covered the $0.50 but it was the principle of the matter...)

There’s a limit on numbers of customers in the store due to COVID. They have good a variety of meats and I found them fresh and affordable. My favorite section is the bento area. Best source of Japanese groceries in SF Bay Area. Normally, we shop in store but we are avoiding that now so we tried their online shopping. Though the store has great produce, meat and fish, only nonperishanles are available online. That still made it possible to get the nori and sauces we needed. They were exceptionally fast to get the items shipped and quickly resolved a small delivery problem. I look forward to being back in the store to shop, but until then, I will return to Nijiyas online ordering service for Japanese grocerries.

Nijiya Market is a gem in this area, you can find a good selection of Japanese snacks, but you can also find a wide range of freshly made food at the deli section. They have fresh organic soy milk, tofu, mochi, etc. The only thing I do not like is the high price of vegetables and fruits, a small box of blueberries costs nearly $7.

Nijiya San Mateo provides perfect sushi I rice . It is amazing. Taste is relatively sweet like aged mom made. I cannot get Nijiya-grade sushi rice from any of super markets in Japan. It is quite difficult even if from any of sushi restaurants. I know some of special Sushi restaurants can serve rice competitive with Nijiyas. But its quite expensive like over 120 dollars per meal. I can make Nijiya-grade sushi rice by myself to serve for my family. Rice, sugar, vinegar and salt, and how to cook.

I have always looked forward to the bentos, but in the past year, it has gotten worse. Today, my husband got the sake salmon bento for us...bad mistake! The salmon was tough, dried to the point of being inedible (like it was a day or two old) & fish bones laid on top of the fish! The futomaki was laughable. Very little ingredients except about an inch wide tough spinach.I’m not sure if this problem is only at the San Mateo location, but if this is being passed as Japanese bento, I will look elsewhere. I think I’m being generous at three stars.

My place for onigiri and my Pocari Sweat. They usually have the back of the store well stocked before 1130am. I arrived early and was pleasantly surprised they were already putting out fresh Onigiri at 10 am. Plus one of the few places I knlw that sells my favorite Royal Milk Tea! Its so good! But light on the caffeine. Hahaha.

The variety of items is very limited and the pre-made food in the fridge was bland. I had gone to the store with friends who had made their purchases already, which included alcohol, but when I went to purchase mine, they asked for my ID as well as for my friend who was standing next to me. They stated they needed to see everyones ID that I was with, probably thinking just me and my friend, but I motioned all of those 5 other people who made their purchases too are with me, and said they needed to see theirs as well. Needless to say, I didnt purchase anything that day.It was just that one incident that upset me, but I cannot forget it.
