Lovely spot for sushi! I took my kids here on a Saturday evening and we enjoyed the traditional sushi and some specialty rolls.The food was great, but you must be prepared to be patient and enjoy a leisurely meal as the restaurant is not fully staffed.
We went there for the first time today and it was really good sushi. He makes the sushi rolls and nigiri really fast. You can tell he knows what hes doing and hes super nice too.The owner even received some adorable drawings of sushi from the kids of some regulars. It was very cute and he was so sweet about it.We will definitely be going there again soon.
The sushi is very good, each bit explotes in your mouth with a new flavor. If it gets crowded the wait time is at least 45 min
I love this place. Sushi is great, I really like their combination box (bento box). They have an awesome sake shooter. Great miso soup.

Great place to eat. The Sushi is the best to be perfectly honest. The staff are excellent the Sushi chef is quite funny and friendly. He will gladly talk to you the whole time if you are setting at the bar. You can enjoy his antics as well as watch him make his creations. Also note they will custom make just about anything you like. Love this place and visit as often as I can. Worth the time to go. Great food and about the friendliest wait staff I have ever experienced in any restaurant.

I love this place! James is the most talented sushi chef in Mendocino County. Fresh food, friendly service and ice cold beer.
I have been coming here for 20+ years. I walk in the door and they always greet me with a hello oh, how are you? They know what I want they double-check just to make sure, but they always get it right. I highly recommend the shrimp tempura, the cream cheese puffs, and my son always likes the rainbow roll and a bunch of other stuff that I dont eat. Its always comfortable and feels like home.
Sushi is amazing and lunch specials are bomb. The owner is so friendly and welcoming. One of my sons favorite places. You can never go wrong with the hand roles or dragon roll. Yum.

If you can get a table at Oharu youll enjoy the food! Thats why four stars instead of five... its really tough sometimes to be seated. That being said, the sushi is ALWAYS delicious and fresh, and there are several choices for those who do not like sushi, too. I recommend making a reservation days in advance and planning to enjoy a relaxing meal. There are excellent appetizers an desserts. Enjoy!
The fish is fresh, the rolls are very well balanced and delicious, and the place is clean and simple. What a good sushi joint is supposed to be. Ignore negative posts. They expect some annoying new-age chrome-bedecked dance club with no class.

To think one would find perfectly seasoned, deliciously creative hand crafted sushi in a small town like ukiah- james is hands down the best sushi chef in Mendocino, and after 35 years of operation is still going strong. Try the green goddess veggie roll, or my absolute favorite, James special dragon roll- so juicy, so unique! If youre lucky he might have a special roll just for you, his attention to detail and genuine service is unmatched. I go here at least once a week, sometimes 2x in one day!I am always willing to wait for james sushi ♡♡♡
O.M.G. LOVE this place. Get the Japanese pot stickers, much less dough than Chinese. Tempura perfect. Melt in your mouth yellowtail as well as scallops.Fair prices, excellent service and if you like bananas, get the fried banana dessert but be careful the inside is hot right out if the fryer!! My new sushi place!
First went to OHaru some twenty years ago. My first taste of Jamess sushi and I was hooked.Very relaxing atmosphere with very friendly service.Im bringing my son and partner soon!!!!

We have never seen any insects as a previous poster had mentioned and the place doesnt have a dirty feeling to it at all, and we have been going there for almost two years. Every time we have gone to eat at OHarus, the food has been good the service excellent and the fried foods prepared perfectly. The decor may not be up to par, but its certainly not the worst in this area. The only complaint I may have is that they are not open on some days that I have a craving for some of their sushi.
OHaru Sushi is a great small-town place for sitting in. If you are in a hurry, you can call ahead to place your order or set a to-go order.They also have fish & chips, teriyaki, and other options for guests who would like something other than sushi. James, the sushi chef, is always polite and tends to engage guests at the bar in conversation while making their dishes. Recommended.
Great food. Too many sushi chefs slather their rolls with sauces, possibly covering less than fresh fish? The sushi here is fresh, balanced (not too much rice), and affordable.
I come through Ukiah twice a month and it never fails that I stop for Sushi at OHarus ... The menu is simple but the options for additions are endless. The seafood is always fresh and they always have a wide variety of choices. Friendliest bar in town ~ 🤗💚
Really delicious, and friendly staff!I don’t enjoy seafood. They had lots of chicken dishes and a tofu roll. They made me a cucumber/avocado roll, and it was very impressive. The presentation was beautiful, it was very fresh, crisp, and tasty. I also had chicken katsu but thought I had ordered a skewer. Anyways, it was the best katsu chicken I have ever had. The chicken also came with miso soup, also the best I’ve ever had!!20$ for the chicken plate, veggie sushi, green tea, and two miso soups to go.
Love the Fish & Chips and the Sushi is the best in town! They are also well priced, decor is clean, maybe not fancy, but Id rather it be clean with great food at a good price than expensive food with beautiful decor where you cant eat the food!
I had such high hopes after reading all of the other reviews, maybe it was an off night. 1st they took my wifes order wrong, maybe she confused them by asking for a substitute. When the order came we corrected the waitress but accepted the misorder just because it wasnt that big of deal. The biggest problem was the rice, the rice for the entrees came out on a separate plate well ahead of the entree and was dry and room temperature, not a hint of warmth, almost as if it had been plated well ahead of time and sat out. The rice with the nigiri sushi was also horribly dry with not even a hint of vinegar, there is a special vinegar which should be applied right after cooking and the rice has slightly set. This helps with flavor and moisture retention. Anyway, some of the fish was alright, some not so great. Since this was my 1st visit, I will probably give it one more try, just to be fair. Lunch so I dont drop a bundle.

We loved tempura shrimp and chicken teriyaki dinner. Miso soup starter was delicious. Foods are prepared very artistically in box, with bright fresh flavor. Many pretty ceramic plates are hand made. Cream cheese wonton more than enough for 3 to share, folded cute little open envelopes. Our friends had California sushi rolls, fried calamari- loved every bite! Offer Kirin beer as well as non imports. Local wines on the wine list, by glass, 1/2 & full bottle. Nice sake choices. From the bar, you can observe sushi preparation while you eat. Most tables accommodate 4 ppl, can be pushed together for larger groups. There is private side room for a special gathering. Main room is well ventilated with natural light and large windows. Food came out quickly, Staff was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient.
Just two blocks from downtown theres this little hole-in-the-wall with great food, super rad Japanese/Nautical atmosphere and a warm friendly staff, not to mention the gentleman making the sushi is the owner of the place... and hes really a nice guy!

Refused to serve my 82 yr. Old mother and her friend. At 1:20 we walked in for lunch. The sign says open until 2pm. Thr server told us they clise at 1:30 so we could not stay. I pointed out that it was not 1:30. Still denyed. My mother uses a walker and it can be hard to navigate just from the car to the front door. They did not care at all. Never going back and I still feel bad for this experience.
James has the place jumping with tasty treats. By far the best sushi for many miles. Always treated well by the wonderful staff.

Took over a half hour for my appetizer, as Im waiting I see a sushi plate sitting in the window in front of me, as I wonder if its my meal, Appetizer fibly arrived and the plate iv been watching just sitting there ends up being mine!!!! We went after the Christmas Lights Parade and they were busy, not yet packed but busy. So it took a while to get our food and then it was mixed up for someone else’s. We were starving and then the waitress gave us edamame to snack on. When we got our food it was spot on. Pretty good oco sauce and chicken katsu

2023-08-04 00:23:56Came here from Clearlake and it was well worth the drive. Great service and fresh sushi was just what I needed. The presentation of the plates were great and all the fish was also great. The rolls are very nice and not rolled tight which added an airy bite and allowed the taste to really come through unlike when the rolls are dense in most places.

2017-10-16 03:38:12First the owner was very nice the pride he took in his work amazed me. The presentation of each dish is truly worthy of Michelin star worthy. It was hand crafted with care and precision. Secondly the prices where amazing. I got at least ten entrees and sake and appetizer for 70 bucks. most places with this high quality and display go for upwards of 160-200 for what I had eaten. The staff was very friendly if you love sushi and need a good experience come here. Check the hours though before going and give yourself about an hour before close. the dishes take time to make but its well worth the miniscule wait.

2022-10-09 01:00:49Hands down the worst sushi Ive ever eaten 😫 the man that greeted us was very nice and gave great service but the food was horrible. We ordered pork buns and they came out within two minutes of ordering and I could tell right away they were store bought and we ordered spring rolls that were dripping with oil and were still ice cold in the middle. We ordered two rolls and they both came coverd with so much sauce but yet had zero flavor and the rice must of been minute rice. I know people love this place and it had great reviews but I will never return. Waste of 70 dollars 😔
