Come here for the nihari which is a curry beef stew. They nailed it. The chicken tiki Masala was good. Garlic Naan and rice completed a satisfying meal at a good price. Dont come if you dont feel comfortable in a tough neighborhood like the tenderloin. But if you do, the staff is friendly and you will be rewarded with a great meal.

Came here for halwa puri which was quite average, halwa was nice not too sweet. Affordable and hearty portions, but would love some more spice. Biryani meat was cooked well but also lacked flavour.

Hey folks, hope all is well. Given that more restaurants are opening back up in SF 🌁 its time to explore again. Ive heard from people Ive met that Pakwan makes the best biryani in Tenderloin neighborhood, so we wanted to try it.Since we did takeout, cant talk about the dine-in experience, but I can talk about the food. Ordered the chicken 🍗 biryani, traditional beef 🍖 curry, and the garlic naan.The biryani was hearty, tasty, and definitely worth a trip in the future. The beef curry was good, however, it was a lil bit oily for our taste. If I were to change anything about that dish, itd be to reduce the ratio of oil to curry 🍛. The garlic naan was seasoned well. It was light, crispy, and went great with the curry.If you do go dine-in, know that parking is tough in the area, and the neighborhood has its challenges. Id suggest going during the day, because the night brings concern, especially if youre travelling with a family.Enjoy!

The food, service, and cleanliness is on point. We ordered the following: Nihari 5/5, Goat Biryani 4/5, Chicken Seekh Kabob 5/5, Beef Seekh Kabob 4/5, and Chicken Boti Boneless 4/5. The food is definitely worth driving down to downtown to. I would recommend this to everyone 💯!

I visited Pakwan last night for Dinner which situated on 501 O Farrell St. i ordered Garlic naan, Tandoori fish, and Chana masala( Chickpea). All items were so very delicious and tasty i cant explain more. Its one of the best taste i had tasted in America. i travelled whole world, i am foody. But This food was best ever from any restaurent. Dinning arrangement here is just normal and simple not high level. But food is Awesome ! Person on reception is very nice guy named AARSH Service is very good. Must Must Visit Restaurent . i will give 9/10 Rating.

My friend and I grabbed quick dinner here after having a few drinks next door at Bourbon and Branch and at around 8:30 pm, the place was slightly packed on a Wed evening.We placed an order for Paneer Tikka Roll ($10), Goat Biryani ($17), and Vegetable Biryani ($16). Food was ready within 20 minutes of ordering and its a self serve setup.Food was absolutely excellent, especially both Biryanis... very flavorful and good portions. Between the Kati Roll and our Biryanis, we could only finish half of our Biryanis. Veggie biryani had plenty of cauliflower, carrots, and maybe ba paneer here and there!Noise level was on the lower side. Go here for their excellent food!

This place is like trash compactor! You eat food and suddenly cockroaches crawl on your table and food, which is insane! The person at the counter is just a nightmare to talk to. He is 0 skills in communication and doesn’t know at all how to behave with customer! My life’s worst experience! I recommend them to go educate their self then learn restaurant business then come back and clean this trash type place and after re-start the business.

Possibly the Best Pakistani food I have had in the US. Was really craving some desi food on my trip to SF and this place did more than hit the spot. Each rice grain of biryani had flavor. The chicken was nice and stringy as you pulled it apart. The tandoori chicken was unimaginably good. Loved their yellow daal too! It was so good I went back for dinner the same day. Look no further if you want authentic good tasting and quality Pakistani food in SF. NOTE- the area around the restaurant isn’t the greatest, so keep that in mind when traveling!

First and foremost the woman who works at the register needs to get fired asap. She provided us with the worst customer service ever at a restaurant. She was rude, hostile and carrying an attitude. After we paid for our order she was asking us for our vaccine cards which we dont mind showing at all as we all respect the laws. But the way she was asking was downright disrespectful. Why will you take our money first and then ask us for vaccine cards instead of doing it the other way around!. On top of that she didnt even ask the white people for their cards, its funny that she has some vendetta against people of color when she herself is a person of color. Plus the whole dining area was filthy and tables were not clean. She was on her phone the entire time while she was suppose to be cleaning the tables instead. She kept touching her mask,phone and then was touching the food Disgusting!. The cooks were constantly cooking while she was on her phone.The food was fine.Never going back again. Hopefully the owner gets rid of this mannerless person or teaches her how to do her job otherwise they will keep losing customers.

Very authentic and delicious. You know it’s great when the rice by itself is tasty. We had the Tikka Masala, Naan, Rice, and chicken and beef skewers. The Tikka was a little more tomato ish than we like but still really good with just a little kick. Chicken was tender and the other meats were greasy (in the good way). The Naan was fluffy and amazing.

First time coming to this restaurant. Staff is not very friendly. He gave us one menu, which was tattered in appearance. Initially we decided to dine in but changed our minds because of how dirty the cutlery was. The plates, forks, spoons all had dried food particles on them. It is self serve, so you get your plates and cutlery on your own. I could not find one clean item. Plates had smears of dark marks on them. We decided to take the food for take out. Food is fair in flavor. Ordered the lamb biryani and achar chicken. Biryani had a good amount of meat and portion sizes are good for the price. Was not highly impressed. Bathroom was not clean. Will not be returning. 1 star for cleanliness, 3 stars for food.

We opted for Door Dash delivery service, but the Naan and Roti we received were disappointingly rubbery and severely undercooked. To put it simply, it was a pathetic experience. Despite explicitly requesting onion, chutney, and cutlery in the instructions, the restaurant didnt make any effort to include them. In conclusion, this place provided an overall terrible experience, and I strongly advise against recommending it to anyone.

I am not sure how authentic or traditional the foods are. What a spice feast!!! So many variety of spices start kicking in several seconds when you eat. I’ve never seen any dishes so packed full of flavor and taste in one bite. I fall in love with Pakistani foods. Nihari is one of the dishes Korean can enjoy!! The meat is just melting in my mouth, almost like liquified meat. Chana masala is just game-over taste!! I found there is countless version of masala powder we can make depending on what spices we put. This makes masala unique!!!

Went here or dinner, luckily it wasnt very crowded and got our order in 10 min.We had paneer Tikka Masala, nan and tandoor roti. Paneer Tikka Masala taste was good but paneer was fried unevenly and some pieces were hard. Garlic naan was very good. Tandoor roti was made from wheat, so a little try and hard compared to the one with all purpose flour.Overall a good place for Indian food.

My husband and I are visiting San Francisco for the first time and we looked up Zabiha halal Asian places to eat around us, and found pakwan restaurant closeby. This is a spot Ill never stop going back to. This is a delicious no frills restaurant. If youre in the Tenderloin this is a great spot to stop in for dinner.You can also bring your own wine/beer free of charge which is a nice benefit.Their Biryani is a massive amount of food. The restaurant was pretty crowded when I arrive there and I was waiting for my pickup around 20 minutes. I can suggest their biryani with chicken its pretty cool but I dont think theyre cooking the same chicken what they put on the biryani in tandoori oven.so basically I would prefer to have tandoori chicken like chicken tikka masala chicken on biryani.and also the size of a portion is pretty big so you might even share your one of your order of biryani with 2 of your friends if youre not super hungry and its pretty tastes good and was really hot and service is also good.

I must have wandered into some form of Pakistani/Indian quarter in SF because the 2 block walk from my hostel had me waking past no fewer than 5 restaurants (and I knew a few more were farther down the block). The neighborhood is a bit rough, but no worse than many bigger cities.I chose Pakwan after some initial review searching and narrowing it down to locations with a current menu available (restaurant owners take note!).I went with the chicken makhanwala (butter chicken) and a Naan. Total was & 12.50 after tax which while more expensive than my go-to back home (PDX) it was not jarring. The portion was fair, as was the amount of chicken, though the chicken was pretty overdone.One piece of Naan is the perfect size to scoop up the curry part, and Im glad I skipped the rice as it would have absorbed all my precious dipping sauce!Id happily give this another go, and possibly grab the lamb saag.

I love Pakwan in the mission. My mister and I tried this location on a Sunday afternoon. It was empty but the food is still super tasty. There were some homeless people coming in and I believe they give them containers of rice and other leftover food for free which is very nice, especially considering the area this location is located. The food is tasty just like the mission location.

I lived in Pakistan for 18 years. This is not an authentic Pakistani or Indian restaurant . If they claim it is then this is the worst Pakistani or Indian restaurant ever. A friend took me here today and he told me he has been eating here for a number of years. From the outside, it doesnt look like much, but dont let that deter you. You go to the counter to order. The first thing I noticed was how reasonable the prices were. I ordered a pakora wrap for $9.98. lt was very good and so big I took 1/2 home. My friend had a biryani and it was HUGE! No table service, but at these prices, who cares 😃.

We ordered chicken karai and nihari. It was the worst ever. They had curry ready and they just put boiled chicken on top of that and served it. I never had nihari like what I had. No taste, seemed like eating regular curry with meat in it. And on top of that it was cold. Asked for tea gave one cup which at the end and were told sorry we are out. The tea was warm which suppose to be hot. This was the worst experience I ever had in my favorite restaurant.

Just left this place. Firstly, the service was mediocre. The lady who works there is rude and had a long face the whole time. She stared at customers weirdly. It’s interesting- do they not teach customer service skills in this place?! They asked us for our vaccination cards which was okay until other people came in and ordered to eat in but were not asked for their vaccination cards. Extremely unprofessional and distasteful behavior for a business. This unfair treatment depending on who the customer is is unacceptable. The food is eh. Nothing special. Garlic naan was ok. There are many Halal and halal Indian/Pakistani restaurants closeby. You’d probably be better off going to another place. The restaurant itself is quite small and cramped but that’s not a problem unless you’re with a stroller or perhaps wheelchair. The place smelled of grease which still lingers on my clothes and in my nose although we’ve been gone for 20 minutes already. Overall it was mediocre and I wouldn’t recommend.

The lentil Dahl swims in oil ; in America oil and water do not mix but in Indian food they do in ways that are combustible : terrible for your heart but great for you soul ; and it’s the soul that matters ! Oddly they don’t make Pakwan, staple for Sindhis like me;The Indian equivalent to an American Diner is called a Dhabha, located at rest stops on Indian highways, their delicious food drips with unsaturated fat that I hope is my last super before meeting my maker! Tenderloin is full of Dhabhas and this one is my favorite.

We ordered goat biryani, karahi chicken and a beef seekh kebab. The biryani was subpar. Very oil and heavy. Chicken karahi was more like chicken ka salan. It tasted okay but we were expecting a drier dish as usually the case with karahi chicken. The beef seekh kebab was amazing!! Biryani and kebab didn’t come with raita so we had to buy it separately. Not sure if that’s just a common practice in the Bay Area. Given our experience with the other two dishes though, we probably won’t visit or recommend to our friends.

Had the goat today after a bit of indecision. Since there were so many highly rated Indian restaurants in the same spot, I wasnt sure which was best.Fortunately, the cashier was very knowledgeable about the subtleties of Indian cuisine and was able to educate me on exactly what constituted a perfect dal fry [this is my litmus test]... From that point I knew that this was the place for me.The garlic naan was delicious and the curry did not disappoint. Tastebuds were blown clean off.

I had some friends that were visiting from Indonesia, and they were looking for halal food around Union Square. I took them to this restaurant since they serve halal food.I was quite surprised that the total for our bill, including tax and generous tips was only $60. And thats for 7 of us, and we still had leftovers. Definitely a good value for the price and generous portion as well.As for the food itself, its quite delicious but Ive had better. I felt that theyre kinda holding back on the spices. I wish it was a bit more flavorful. Overall I cant really complain though and definitely would go back if Im around Union Square and looking for a cheap, decent meal.

I love their chicken dishes. I eat their chicken briani at least three out of five visits there. Their Nan bread is also a highlight and a must for me. My last visit was this Christmas Day, and it was packed. It was a cold chilly day and the hot food filled me up and brightened my holiday. I took my in-home support worker with me.

Delightful. Affordable. Excellent food. I am not from San Francisco, but I really loved this place and would be a regular if I did. It was an iconic hole-in-the-wall with a very diverse clientele. Great prices. The Keema nan (bread with lamb meat inside) was awesome. Free iced water in large glass bottles in the fridge, and you just order, pay, and pretty much help-yourself to everything else (silverware, pickup when your name is called, etc.) Open kitchen, you can see everything. Very nice, down to earth cashier.

I would not repeat visiting this restaurant just for the rude and terrible attitude of the front desk guy.Ordered food, and was waiting for 20 mins.Asked if its ready, and got a rude response saying its getting ready and will be ready in 2-3 mins.Waited for 10-15 more minutes, and then asked. Again got back a ruder response saying this dish would take longer to get ready.After 45 mins of waiting, lost my patience and explained him that i have to go for a meeting and asked when would the food be ready.He started shouting and said if its to go it would be ready.I said ok, and he just threw the pieces of chicken in a to go box and sent us away.The food was ready like about 20 mins before, and this guy was just not ready to service. During this time, he was rude to other customers, broke a few glass bottles and was not even cleaning the glass pieces properly.I hope they replace the guy with someone with whos respectful of people and could serve customers with some respect

My major gripe is that I dont seem to be able to get what I want. Like my last visit I wanted to get s few simple kbabs, and going into great detail explaining to the (?)waiter exactly what I wanted, some plain and simple kbabs, and nothing else, which along with some bread make for a great little snack. What I was given however were 4 kbab dinners with rice and whatever else they serve with their dinners. Okay granted that is whats on their menu, but not what I wanted. If I could only get them as dinners the waiter should have told me. Instead I ended up with 4 dinners consisting of mostly stuff I ended up having to throw away and attached to it a price tag of just over $80.00. not exactly a cheap snack, but the last one I get from here.all the trimmings with a almost $100.00 price tag. Pretty expensive snack in my opinion. One more to only dont go there list.

To my friends and I, Pakwan is a San Francisco staple! One byriani dish will serve 3 or 4 people. The naan is good. If your eating a lunch or dish alone I recommend the chicken Boti (or cubed chicken) with naan bread. It comes with raw onions and lemon quarters. A pretty authentic Pakistani place in tenderloin neighborhood. I know everyone raves about this place, and yes ... it is in the tenderloin but I have to say for many reasons Im not very impressed. The food flavor was great, but both he and I got a stomach ache afterwards from having their chicken curry special of the day and the lamb biryani.While I was there, a homeless lady came in through the door, and took a soda off the remains of an empty table from some people who left. It is likely that the restaurant would have thrown away the soda, but they actually sent a guy outside to wrestle the soda out from her hands. She came in and asked for the soda again because they were going to toss it out, and they basically roughhoused her outside until her pants fell and she came crying in the restaurant again and ended up taking another customers soda. She became belligerent and yelled out that she just wanted the soda but the staff was rude and continued to what I would say abuse her and handle her roughly (physically).This left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. As much as I understand how a business in the tenderloin needs to protect themselves and give a good experience to their customers, I dont really think that this was a great way to handle this particular situation. Homelessness in the tenderloin is a pervasive problem and theyre honestly just making it worse. A little compassion could go a long way.I wont be coming back.

Learnt about this place from an old friend who now lives in SF, and her recommendation was spot on!For 4 of us, we ordered a beef sheek kebab, a tandoori chicken (breast), Chicken Achari, Nihari, and 3 Butter Naans .... Pakwan is a favorite Indian/Pakistani restaurant in the Bay Area, with several locations. This one is small but service is fast and Ive never seen it packed full. Came here on a Friday after 9pm. We ordered the chicken tandoori, achari, channa masala and naans. The tandoori was well done and the meat very tender. Achari was more spicy than we expected, but theres means were perfect. The dish of the day was Biryani - rice was perfect and the spiced well balanced.

Visited this restaurant on nov 15. great food. not the best ambiance. we ordered chicken boti, seekh kabab and mix vegetables along with naan. The food was prepared in a decent amount of time. we loved everything on the table. host was very gracious. we will definitely come back

Reasonably price food, good portions but twice in a row I have been given the wrong items. If you have the time, visit the Pakwan at 16th and Guerrero somehow their food always tastes better!

Pakwan is one of those hole-in-the-wall places which doesnt have much to ambience or flash but makes up more than enough with its prices and scrumptious food. The naans are wonderful and go with any of the dishes, veggie or meat, especially their lamb ones.

Best Indian hole in the wall in the city, bar none. Being Indian, its hard to find anything that resembles authentic chicken tikka masala. While the world is fine dining on Valentines, my hubby and I patron Pakwan every year. We love it that much. The chicken tikka masala and lamb kabobs are our favorites. While the decor lacks romance, the food makes up for it ten fold.

Wonder reading all these good reviews but i just ordered food they dont even bother to use foil for naans to wrap it properly, its just a waste of years n years to running a business or may be they just dont even care anymore, in reality if you dont know the importance of naan in Indian n Pakistani food you dont even deserves single star
