I gave this 2 stars instead of one because the people that work there are very nice and the store is clean. The reason for the low rating is due to the quality of the meat we have purchased. I have been there 3x now and decided to write this review after giving them a FAIR chance. I am not entirely sure who their supplier for beef is but, after trying a variety of items and spending HUNDREDS of dollars, I can safely say you are not missing out and you may be better off going to whole foods.
The only place I trust to get good meat. I always pick up my filet mignon here and the fish has always been fresh. Its definitely worth the trip to this spot.Worth mentioning is the truffle butter they sell here. The price is great and its crazy good.Edit: Im going to go out on a limb here and say everything is good here. Chilean Sea Bass, pork tenderloins, NY steak and dry aged, bacon, pork belly, chicken breast, and the giant prawns. I seriously no longer buy meat any where else. You can even get pig back fat!
Love love love this place. With no hesitation I travel across the bay to this place regularly. No other butcher or store is up to par after coming here. Top notch quality meat.

Dry aged bone in ribeyes!Got 2 at 45 days dry aged and 2 at 30 days dry aged.Also got a tiny New York dry aged pre sealed for sous vide.They will season with salt and pepper, rosemary, a little A5 beef suet and then vacuum seal it for sou vide.Wagyu Tomahawk was amazing too.Ryan is very helpful and very knowledgeable about the meats and cooking techniques for each cut.What a deal!

Moved in the area a couple months ago and this is been my go-to meat joint. Simply put: best personalities I’ve ever interacted with at a butcher shop. The staff is supremely kind and passionate about their roles and it feels authentic. The meat is amazing and always high-quality. The whiskey selection is also very nice.
Nothing overly special about this place.Their prices are quite high and after going there several times I havent noticed any difference in taste from that of your standard normal grocer.
Top notch butcher shop with very friendly staff. They carry Japanese beef here, which is awesome. The liquor/wine store attached has really extensive selection of wine whiskeys and some beers. They also have a good selection of alcohol from Japan and happily refer you to other stores/sellers if they dont have it. Super friendly and customer service from people that actually care and take the time to help--which is becoming increasingly hard to find...
A great butcher! You will find great cuts of meat that are hormone free and grass fed. The team is very friendly and always prepares great packages for you. They also carry chicken and seafood. Its a beautiful selection of meats and fish. They have a wine and limited charcuterie section. A little but pricey but good selection. Team needs to know a little bit more about the wines and proper pairings but I found the selection is good. All California based. Oh, and remember to pick up a fresh loaf of sourdough bread! Its delicious!!! Enjoy, its a great experience
Nice selection good value. Wish they would answer their phone or at least have a message option. Today the butcher somehow didnt put part of my purchase in the bag, and I would like to at least let them know. Oh well they have a lot of business.

I often pick up a dry-aged standing rib roast to feed a party, and it has never failed to impress.The selection rotates, so its usually worth a trip every few weeks, just to scope it out.In addition to a wide selection of beef cuts, youll find a good selection of lamb, porkchops, and sausages. Poultry and seafood are in a separate case.Its co-located with a wine and liquor store that has a reasonable selection of higher-end whisky.

High quality of meat, and friendly employees with great expertise. Long line outside the store during lunch hour/weekends but its worth the wait. Able to buy authentic Japanese wagyu beef with high marble score.
Pape meat is my favorite butcher in bay area, they have traditional and modern selections of steak, from lovely dry-aged ribeye to top grade japanese A5 wagyu. Price is very reasonable given the quality of the meat and all staff are very nice. Also, their fresh sliced prosciutto has so much layer of aroma and flavor, excellent quality.

Theyll help you pick out a cut thats right for you, and they do so with patience and a smile.As far as the product, Ive never had anything I didnt love. Favorites include the aged rib eye and the house-made sausage.Dont forget to stop by the fridge case for duck fat, livers, and other not-always-available-at-Safeway items.
First of all, the staff here are top notch. They are knowledgeable, friendly and would make any cuts and marinate you want. Excellent place to come for BBQ or camping trips. The space feels clean, and now has a huge wine section. They also do dry aged steaks. Why would you pay top dollars to go to a steak house when you can come get your own cut and grill it yourself?
Crazy good! I bought wagyu NY steak and a dozen lamb rib chops and my mouth still waters every time I think about it. The staff are super friendly. I can’t wait to go back!
The very best quality meats & now fish you can find!!! Excellence is their reputation since over 40 yrs!!!! Just had a swordfish to die for!!! And the rack of lamb has been a top seller for years!!
Lots of selection, great staff, and consistently the best tasting meat around. The employees are always friendly and happy to share their knowledge and tips. The freezer also includes things that are harder to find at the grocery store (duck, rashers).Dont miss the jalapeño cheddar sausage, dry-aged ribeye, and filet mignon.

This is hands-down the ONLY place in the Bay Area that is still an authentic butcher shop. Holidays like Christmas can be very very busy, so I advise ordering for pickup at least 1-2 days before otherwise parking can be impossible and the line will go round the block. The beef in particular is simply the best, you cant go wrong here!
Papes consistently has the best meat available on the peninsula. Great dry aged steaks, Hawaiian ribs, homemade sausages, pork, chicken, seafood. You name it. Be prepared to pay for quality! Worth every penny.
This is definitely my place for lamb. Ive come here every year for the past 10 years. Its well worth the drive from San Jose. The guys are top notch. I enjoy coming. Ive watch them grow from a little deli/meat counter to this beautiful upscale market. Perfect for Millbrae. Ill be there this week for my Easter Lamb.
Everything at PAPES is excellent. We have been shopping there, for I would say over 20 years. The meats are top quality, some beef you can get aged, their lamb is excellent, so is their veal. Fish is fresh. Just be prepared to spend a little $$$$.
Amazing quality meat with a good selection. They also have A5 Kobe steaks from Japan. Their seafood selection is also really good. This is my go to place for Dry Aged steaks.
First time in and Guy greeted us warmly and was very knowledgeable and educational. We bought a birthday gift for a friend (picking up an aged hunk-o-meat later this month) & a 21 day aged rib eye for us to test - we followed Guys instructions and had the best steak with the easiest prep! Taking some of the Steves special sausage to try with our friends - cant wait!

Ok, found my butcher. Took me a couple years before stumbling into this butcher and wine shop. Very clean space. I purchased my whole organic chicken here and took suggestions from the butcher as to which already pre-marinated chicken breasts I should buy. While, waiting as the butcher cut up my whole chicken and packaged it, I spoke with another butcher cleaning the largest prawns that Ive ever seen in my life! If you are looking on where to buy your seafood or steaks...Come in here!! And, Im sure theyll even help you find the right wine to pair for the dinner that you are preparing.

I can only speak about two things here as that is all that I have had: there lamb and the rub they use for the lamb. I live out of state now but can say that I still tell the story of the first time I had there lamb chops. Lets just say I have yet to find its equal in restaurant/butcher..., its really that good. Its the kind of thing that now I go out and order the lamb some where other then Papes and take one bite and proceed to slam my fist down on the table cursing PAPES as I have again wasted money not buying it from them and being disappointed about getting it some where else. The second thing is there house rub. I have used that stuff on everything, meat (obviously), veg., pasta, you name it. I was going to add it to my apple pie but my wife grabbed my hand and gave me the look, so I cant speak for desserts, but everything else you good.Thanks so much Papes and Ill be hitting you up next time Im in SF/BA

They were happy to answer any question, and their engagement definitely helped me spend more money. 😄 Lots of premium meats at reassuringly stratospheric prices, some also very good quality meats at more decent prices. I purchased a few dry aged ribeyes that were pre-packaged for sous vide, seasoned with salt pepper and rosemary and packed with a little rendered wagyu fat they made themselves. That was just insanely tasty - just the perfect amount of aged-beef funk. Also got some heritage pork chops and a smoked ham. The ham almost stole the show from the turkey at Thanksgiving dinner; it was excellent.The only thing holding back a fifth star is that the cattle seems to come from feedlots; I’m a stickler for humanely raised meat and none of the beef was certified. The butcher I spoke to was uncertain about the meat’s origin beyond it being “from Omaha” which doesn’t tell you much. The lamb is prominently advertised as certified humane, and the pork is heritage breed so I’m assuming it is likely humanely raised (but again, no certification so maybe someone figured out how to stuff Berkshire pigs into cement barns without them dying). Add some certified humane options for the animals that don’t currently offer it and this place is otherwise absolutely a class act, five stars. I don’t think it is too much to ask for meat that’s getting up above $40 or even $50 per lb.

If I can, I always try to go to this butcher to buy meat instead of going to the supermarket. I can tell the huge difference in the flavours of the dish I make. You can also ask to seal the meat in vacuum bags so you can freeze and use them whenever you want.
