So I have to say I was surprised.I was invited to this restaurant by a friend to eat beef stroganoff and I immediately thought yeah I like hamburger helper.Let me tell you that the flavor far surpassed any expectations I had. I want to be clear that I have studied with foreign chefs, and I do have a well versed background in the kitchen in commercial/educational/private environments. I think that the basic dining experience of a night out with a friend is something that is easily expected from a place like this.Ultimately, I have not been disappointed l. Everything has the right amount of texture to suggest that it was made by hand, and the flavor profiles have multiple qualities to enjoy and consider.Its cultural food, that colonial Americans would likely identify with that many modern Americans may have never truly experienced.

I had a great experience at Pomegranate. A Russian-Georgian restaurant. The service from Edwin was awesome. We had borscht, cheese boat bread (awesome), shared a stroganoff, honey cake with Turkish coffee.When in San Diego you need to try this place if you want great food. The pomegranate martini was delicious too.

Pomegranate is a Russian restaurant with unique decor. The first thing I noticed about the place is people have written all over the walls. The lighting is very soft with lots of seating indoors. The wait staff is very friendly. Our waitress took very good care of us. We had pierogies as an appetizer. They were very good. The filling was potato. I had the golubtsi as my main course which is beef and pork wrapped in cabbage in a tomato sauce. It was very good. I really enjoyed the tomato sauce coupled with the flavor of the meat. Portions are just right. I left the restaurant feeling satisfied. Not being familiar with Russian fare, Pomegranate gave me a great intro. Well done!

Definitely recommended going there for Georgian food. Tried a number of dishes, and all were really good.I did not like the atmosphere, not sure what design they were going for, but randomly scribbled walls do not make a nice impression. A fresh coat of paint would do wonders.

Ive been wanting to try this Russian place for awhile, And Im glad I finally got to. I seen the bread with the cheese in the middle and they add a raw egg into the hot cheese and stir it quickly right from the table. It was so delicious. They had several different dumplings that we tried and they were also very very good. My main dish I got the stroganoff with the pasta, but I should have gone with the traditional mashed potatoes for preference. The pear soda was unique but tasted really good. All in all if you want to try something new then I recommend this place.

Im Georgian and I thought I would enjoy my meal here and I did. I brought home some leftover Khatchapuri and as Im chewing on it.. omg there was literally huge plastic wrap inside FOOD. I almost choked on it. As much as I would love to support this restaurant I will never go there again. They really need to have staff who pays attention

Ive spent quite a bit of time in Russia and there was alot of Georgian Restaurants there as well. This is just as good as the places I had in Russia and I highly recommend you come here. The Borscht, Adjaruli Kachapuri, and pelmeni were very tasty and Ill be back for more.

The food is excellent. There’s a nice selection of Eastern Europe dishes. The atmosphere is great, service is fast and friendly and prices are reasonable.Downside is parking - there’s nothing available as the street is always packed and spaces are minimal.

New review: I came here again and this time feels even more delicious than the last time. We had a special appetizer which has five giant meat soup dumplings, they are amazingly delicious! The salad platter, 5 different salad, superb! The lamb chops plates, nice grilled and delicious flavor, with rice and veggies on the side. And the cabbage wrapped meats, very very nice, the creamy tomato sauce is insanely good. Nothing left at the end because everything is so perfect.Previous review: I read how awesome this place is when the first several months I moved in San Diego. And after two years, we finally are here, with our friends who visit from Texas. The foods here are amazing! The service is so nice too. I will recommend Adjaruli Khachapuri at the first place, it is a must have. Also I love their Chakapuli, the lamb meat is so soft and off the bone. We also enjoyed the classic Borsht soup. For drinks, if you mention the YouTuber #TravelDeeper, you will get complimentary horseradish shots. But! Be careful.... I think 99% the people can’t handle that. For me, it made me tearing... I felt like drinking wasabi shot. I love their Georgian house red wine tho. Overall, I love here.

I’m so glad I found this place! Their food was authentic and super delicious!! First time I had borscht was when I went to Russia a few years ago. I fell in love with the soup! But I couldn’t find it anywhere in So Cal. So when I found Pomegranate and saw that they serve the soup, I just had to try it out. And I’m so glad I did! We also ordered the salad sampler, cabbage roll, medovik, and a couple other things. Everything was super delicious, and the service was fantastic! Definitely recommend!!

Soooooo good. And their prices are beyond affordable. I ordered a half portion of the soup and bread basket. It was def worth the wait until the evening for them. Best dinner ever. And the dine in experience was amazing loved the atmosphere and the writing on the walls.. the bathroom was so cute it had like a nook in the back end of the restaurant. It was very dark in dining room and it felt very intimate. If I had a date Id take them here. I just took myself out but it def felt like I could relax there. 😌

What an absolutely amazing meal. Its a bit more on the expensive side, but man is it worth it. The cabbage rolls were just amazing, and the pork was cooked to perfection (hard and glazed on the outside, juicy on the inside). They also have an extensive cocktail menu. The vodka is rather exotic; ask for the homemade vodka flight and put your taste buds for a ride. The dessert we got, honey cake, was just stupid delicious too. We left full and extremely satisfied. Perfect for a date night.

This was our second time at Pomegranate and the food was as delicious today as I remembered from 3 years ago! Everything we tried was really fresh and tasty. The food was very good and it was nice to explore a cuisine different than the usual fare. However the bathroom graffiti had a very strong political statement. Even some of that was okay: its just public opinion. But I assume Pomegranate wants to make a profit and if you dont want my capitalistic dollars, then you will not get them! It is not a good idea to insult your customers.

Had dinner at this Russian-Georgian restaurant, one of many we have been aching to try. Right out of the gate I knew this was going to be a memorable meal. The dumplings in the yogurt dill sauce were phenomenal. They could have put a mountain of them inside the bowl and we would have gladly eaten them. This was the second choice dish as we couldnt order the cheesy bread because of its size. Its meant to share between 4-6 people so we are gathering pepe to try this place with us. My wife ordered the Cornish hen that was fried to perfection. It was presented in a platter that they set on fire and I guess it was fairly accurate because that chicken was indeed fire. I ordered the leg of lamb and that too was one of the too three leg of lamb dishes Ive ever tasted. It was so rich and delicious. Both dishes were served with a side of rice, just a perfect side for both. The plum sauce on my dish was beyond words. I literally passed bread around the bowl to get the last drop. We finished with a layer honey cake and that too was superb. We order wine and a lemon drop pomegranate cocktail that was excellent. Total bill, including 20% gratuity, was $105. While it wasnt cheap, the food was far far better than other expensive places we have dined T previously. For a weekday, the place filled up quickly and by the time we left there was a short wait to be seated. I imagine its far more crowded weekends. Cant decide where to go? Put this place at the top of the list. It is absolutely a gem in the North Park neighborhood.

Very high quality food. The cabbage salad is very refreshing and crunchy. The perogi pastry was moist and fresh, and the potato inside creamy. The cream cheese and onion with the perogi is a good compliment, the onion especially since it’s sweetness goes well with the savory perogi, I think that more onions are needed with this dish since there were not enough. Finally the cheese bread was divine. The dough was fresh and a little chewy. It was cool how the server mixed the egg yolk and cheese in front of us. Since there is so much cheese I would recommend getting some red wine with this dish to get a change in flavor that will also compliment the cheese. This bread is pretty big and is filling for 2 people.

We first visited this restaurant 12 years ago. We enjoyed it very much so we had to come back as soon as moved back to SD. We ordered every non-veggie dishes and they were all so delicious. I especially loved Golubtsi (cabbage rolls) and beef stroganoff. We also ordered lamb chops that are only available on weekends. Deliciousness!!!! We shared one of their popular desserts - honey cake with ice cream. It was right amount of sweetness. I got the cabbage rolls (I forget the Russian name of the dish on the menu). They were delicious! The beef inside was really good.I also got babushkas surprise, and the Russian black tea. Babushkas surprise was a nice ice cream & fruit dessert. Russian black tea really good too. It came with a sour cherry syrup instead of sugar.I was with a large group so it turned out pretty expensive because of the 18% gratuity they added.It was very crowded and noisy when I went (on a Saturday night).Overall, excellent service and delicious food! Just a bit loud.

We ate at this delightful restaurant last night on September 8, 2019. The atmosphere is cozy and quaint with pleasant servers. Their wine list of Georgian wines has a wide variety from which to choose. I highly recommend the Russian borscht. This comforting dish has a rich broth chock-full of beets and vegetables and meat. They also have a vegetarian version.

We walked straight in at dinner-time.with no wait. We were told to select any seat we wanted (until we selected a table) and were told.we.could not sit there by the host. He said that table was used to help the servers deliver the food to tables. Oddly, he then sat a couple there, who seemed to be familiar with him, despite what he had told us.Otherwise, the experience was great. My brother recommended this restaurant, as he had eaten here years earlier and described it as his most authentic experience in Georgian dining since his trip to Russia in the mid 90s where he stayed with a Georgian exchange family.We tried the Georgian Eagle and the stroganoff, both of which were delicious, but the real treat was an afterthought. Originally, we had not planned on ordering this dish, but ultimately decided to order. The servers were very helpful in teaching us to pronounce the names of dishes when asked and described the Imeruli Khachapuri, as a calzone: fresh inhouse made dough stuffed with mozzarella and feta... TO DIE FOR. It did not disappoint, and you would be remiss to visit this quaint spot without ordering this traditional and delightful Georgian dish!

Ordered beef stroganoff, pierogi, and golubtsi via Uber Eats. The stroganoff was good and the pierogi were OK. However, the reason this restaurant gets a 1 star rating is because they had the audacity to reheat frozen golubtsi and pass them off as fresh made. The filling in the golubtsi was hard and the acidity was off. My family has been making these foods for decades and the filling in the golubtsi should be soft but stay together. I experienced upset stomach and diarrhea. Pomegranate should be ashamed for trying to deceive the customer.

We liked the food and our waitress was great and knowledgeable.We tried a number of dishes, my personal favorite was the lamb stew or the chakapuli, the meat is falling off the bone and the flavor of the spices was just amazing.The second favorite and top choice for 2/4 of us was the chicken dish or chakhokhbili. Again meat falling of the bone and the sauce was just amazing, basil, meat, yum! These two are a must.We also had pelmeni which are beef dumplings, they didn’t make it to the top of our list, just because the chakapuli and chakhokhbili were amazing.We also tried their special of the day dumplings which had beef and pork meat and broth inside, the khinkali. We liked them better than the pelmeni.We had the Russian borscht as well which is a beet soup, it was ok but nothing like the chakapuli.In terms of drinks we had a kula which was an apricot sweet drink with pieces of apricot inside, a bit too sweet for us and a Russian tea that came with a shot of cherry juice.To wrap up, get the chakapuli and chakhokhbili.

It’s time I finally leave a review for this place, one of the best restaurants in San Diego. We’ve eaten here many many times and have tried almost everything on the menu. We have never had a bad meal. From the beet salad to the pelmeni, from the stroganoff (best ever) to the shishlik, everything here is phenomenal. The adjaruli khachapuri is possibly my favorite appetizer of all time. I bring all my out of town guests here and they are always blown away. The atmosphere is a bit loud and chaotic which honestly is the perfect setting for this type of meal. We noticed this week that their menu has changed slightly which I am thrilled about, because this place will never get stale or boring. I really can’t say enough good things about Pomegranate. Every time I leave I’m looking forward to my next visit before I even get through the front door.

We met a couple that recommended we try the salad sampler and I did not disappoint. The variety of flavors was delightful, I really enjoyed the carrot salad. We also had the pierogies, they were the perfect little dumpling, moist and an amazing potato inside, the carmelized onions were the perfect addition. The place was referred to by a friend of mine who knows the owner, Dmitriy and even that, according to the Russian culture did not improve the service.Food wise and ONLY food wise this place deserves the posted stars. On the requested to add some smashed garlic in to khachapuri, the answer was: We do NOT serve khachapuri today. What? Georgian restaurant does not serve main baked bread product? Come on.Design?! If that what you can call it... was that a Russian or Georgian style of tables, chairs, walls and images (sort of paintings on them)? NO WAY! The only interesting touch was the different lamps, however if you desired to go with that approach, carry on, sky is the limit. Why stopping on marker hand wringing on the walls, open cases of light bulbs on the reception table, loud service personnel shouting at each other even from the kitchen...and the list may go on.Thanks again for SOME good Russian-Georgian salads and delicious borsch. As someone who is relatively unfamiliar with Georgian and Russian cuisine, I was a little nervous trying this place for a date. Stepping into the cozy, well decorated restaurant space put me at ease and seeing the well humored menu entries made the food very approachable. Tableside traditional cheese pie preparation made for an exciting dish to share with my girlfriend and paired well with the borscht. Having both vegan and traditional borscht is extremely thoughtful, and the vegan mushroom borscht was every bit as rich and delicious as beef borscht I have eaten in the past. Other options for veggie eaters include a veggie stroganoff which I will definitely be back for, as well as potato pierogis, a worldwide classic. The carrot salad made for an excellent starter. I am thoroughly impressed with almost every dish here. We had a large party and shared, family style. The borscht was amazing. Some of the best Ive ever had. So much flavor. The perrogies, however, did disappoint. They were just okay. Probably mostly the texture, but also the flavor was fairly superficial. We had the salad sampler to start and I highly recommend this. Its a good way to see what they have. I really enjoyed most of their salads. We also had the lamb, the stroganoff and the chicken. All very tasty. Stroganoff could have been a little richer, but still nice. For dessert, the honey cake. I wasnt impressed, but it was worth the try.

My parents and i came here for a nice night out. All the staff was very friendly and patient and they were working very hard. Service was amazing, our food got to us quicker than we thought. We ordered the salad sampler platter to try all the salads offered to start. They were all amazing, especially the carrot salad. Then we ordered the adjaruli which is the cheese-filled bread with egg. It was amazing! The waitress scrambled the egg at our table and gave us a knife and a fork to cut off a piece and serve it with cheese. 10/10 recommend. Then we ordered the Golubtsi, which is the meat-filled cabbage rolls. They were delicious! The sauce was creamy and filled with flavors. The rolls came with mashed potatoes, which were also amazing. They were very soft and warm. We were going to order dessert, but we were so full that we had to leave it at that. To drink, my mom had the pomegranate wine, my dad ordered the baltika (a Russian beer) and I had the pomegranate-raspberry tea iced. We were very satisfied and would definitely recommend everything we had. The atmosphere was delightful. It was cozy and homey, you could hear the music that they were playing, but you could also hear the person in front of you and the waitress. Everything was perfect!

This has quickly become our go-to date night (and weve brought my parents a few times too and they love it too).Like others have said, it can get a bit loud when there are parties/large groups inside, but they have a decent amount of outdoor seating on their patio. Their cocktails and beer are amazing & we just tried their vodka flight this past time which was amazing (favorites were definitely the raspberry & cherry, but the horseradish was surprisingly really good too!).The food is quite heavy so prepare yourself by fasting all day. Our go-tos are the Adjaruli Khachapuri (egg cheese bread), Pierogies, Borscht (beet soup), Chakapuli (lamb) & Shashlik (skewered meat). I definitely recommend sharing a main between two people if youre also getting appetizers. Their portions are huge and its very heavy food!

A great find by my wife, we were looking to try a new cuisine and this one nailed it. The good here was very tasty and the vibe and staff are great as well. Youve got to try the cheese bread and some dumplings. Also stick to traditions and taste from their impressive vodka list.

So glad I finally decided to try this place! We ordered the salad sampler, adjaruli khachapuri, and beef stroganoff for dinner. All of the salads were surprisingly flavorful, the cheese bread was heaven, and the stroganoff wasn’t as heavy as I expected it to be. 10/10. The honey cake was just okay, probably wouldn’t order again. We’ll be back!

Pomegranate is one of my favorite restaurants in the area! The Adjaruli is always a must. It’s a bread boat filled with melted cheese and a cracked egg. The dish is brought to your table fresh and steaming hot, then the server mixes the egg into the hot cheese. So delicious

Excellent food in a surprisingly romantic but casual atmosphere. Initially I was hesitant as I did not find the concept of Russian/Georgian food appealing, but after my first time there, I was blown away by the flavors (rivaling Indian food). Excellent vegetarian options, and I usually eat the carrot, okra, or eggplant. Definitely would recommend the salad plate sampler if you want to get a little bit of everything.I dont eat mammals but my mother and friends love the goat (chakapuli). The chakhokbili is my favorite meat dish though the shashlik kebab on weekends are also good. Cant go wrong with the dumplings and there (Both veg + meat options).There is an associated parking lot with limited parking, but you can usually find a space on weekdays.Overall, one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego and definitely a hidden gem.

Ive never even heard of Georgian food. Well let me say that it is absolutely delicious. This is a very nice restaurant. It is casual dining with incredibly delicious food. I had a salad sampler. Beets, carrots, lentils, cabbage were made like nothing Ive ever had. Even if you dont like beets you would love this beet salad. Words cant describe how spices are used to infuse flavors. There are lamb, pork, chicken and beef dishes that were equally delicious and dumplings and soups created from the region of Soviet Georgia. This is not a fried calamari, or fried zucchini place. It is a unique dining experience. Additionally it was in the budget. I was satisfied, and enjoyed every bite. I dont think anything would be disappointing. You can be vegan or a carnivore....it doesnt matter. Great food. I want to go back.

One of my most favorite places Ive been to in a long while. Fantastic food, Great Service, Incredible experience.Katia was our server this weekend and I was blown away by the experience we had. It is a cozy authentic feel with a wide range of clientele who visit and feel welcome.We got an order or Russian dumplings, Pelmeni, and Russian Potstickers to share and they hit the spot, We then split the Chicken Tabaka for our main course and it comes Flambeed!With a quirky menu in addition to how food the food is, and an interior with such a personality this is a must visit restaurant and I will for sure be back.

I give it four stars because it was a little bit very noisy and the noise came from the staff stacking dishes while I ate I could hear the noise of forks and spoons all the time even though I was not sitting next to the kitchen. Ordered khinkali were very tasty and juicy. If you like khinkali, then here they are excellent. I didn’t eat khachapuri, I didn’t like it for me there was too much cheese and it was very salty. Although I really love khachapuri. The borscht my husband said was chic and very tasty.

Though it has been several years, my friends and I ate here on a trip to San Diego. Twice, as a matter of fact - we loved it so much. I think of it often, and not many restaurants have left such an impression on me. I had never tried borscht and was amazed by the flavor. The atmosphere is cozy, and I appreciated the authenticity. Great Eastern European food. The cheese boat is decadent and the Siberian meat dumplings were a fantastic start. Great dishes prepared with fresh herbs and very generous potions. My lamb was overcooked so be sure to specify a temperature if you order the roasted meat entree.

A lovely restaurant, oozing charm. Fairly busy on a Friday night, we had to wait 15 minutes for a table. It was well worth the minimal wait.We ordered the Borscht, Chicken Tabaka, Beef Stroganoff, and Chakapuli. All of the food was excellent, but the Beef Stroganoff was the clear winner.We would definitely visit again, and you should too.

I really wanted to love this place, the food (or at least the appetizers) was exceptional and was so different from your normal restaurant fare. Unfortunately, the service was some of the worst Ive had (I dont think Ive ever reviewed anything less than 4 stars). We ended up waiting for the entrees for an hour, to the point we gave up and had to ask for it to-go. In a nearly two-hour stretch she came by four times, and that includes the initial heres silverware and menus sort of deal. I want to cut the place some slack and say that it bordered on being busy, and judging by the quality of the food thats perfectly understandable, but that service ruined the place for me.

Update: went with my mom and the food was equally delicious! We ordered ice teas and they gave us the most delicious raspberry syrup, she actually too the rest home! The beef stroganoff was so decadent and rich, definitely will put some meat on your bones! Highly recommend the pickled vegetables, they were so full of flavor and delicious, need a group to finish them, it was a huge plate! Chakapuli and borcht was very consistent to last time and equally delicious!Delicious food, great cocktails, and a fun atmosphere! I cant remember all of the names, we ordered chakapuli, borscht, chicken/eagle dish, meatloaf, pierogis, toad ice cream, a bunch of different beers, a couple different cocktails, and a round of horseradish shots. What a great night, we all left full with smiles on our faces.

Great experience here! I have had nearly every dish here and have not been disappointed by any of them. My favorite dishes include the Adjaruli Khachapuri, Borscht, Golubtsi, and Medovic. I recommend going with 1-3 people so you can split the salad sampler and appetizers. The carrot salad is the best in my option but the others are fun to try as well.

How come I havent reviewed this one yet? This place is great and authentic (Im a Russian American). Some of my favorites: adjaruli (cheese pie), khinkali, medovik (layered honey cake). A lot of my friends also appreciate borscht and golubtsy. A variety of interesting beverages also (try kvass, a fermented bread drink).Do prepare for some troublesome parking, maybe carpool, bike, taxi, whatever have you. And its not cheap...

We had a great meal at Pomegranate. We ordered almost all the appetizers to share and they were all fabulous! The pelmeni (meat dumplings) and Russian pierogies were all excellent, but the Imeruli Khachapuri (bread stuffed with cheese) was to die for!For main courses, the chicken tabaka was interesting: a flattened cornish game hen, fried and served with pomegranate molasses. The chakapuli was tender and flavorful, and the beef stroganoff was ok (not as good as my wifes).We had the honey cake and Toad sweet ice cream. The ice cream was good and the honey cake was unremarkable. I had a turkish coffee to finish the evening and that was traditional and excellent.The service was good initially, our server was attentive and helpful. Toward the end of the evening, however, she was apparently distracted, walking away in the middle of our dessert order (I had to chase her down to complete our order) and not listening to our request for additional to-go boxes. While not a deal breaker for returning, it did put a damper on an otherwise enjoyable evening.We will definitely return; there are plenty of other items on the menu to sample!

Definitely my favorite restaurant in San Diego. The Food in amazing, the space is lots of fun. The only downside is I always overeat.Definitely get the Cheese Boat. The Carrot and Beet Salads are great. Try to save room for desert (it will be hard to save room since youll want to eat everything on the menu) because youll also need to order the Honey Cake.
