Rao Thai Eatery is an absolute gem tucked away in Elk Grove, and I had the pleasure of dining there recently. As a senior data center engineer based in Silicon Valley, I value efficiency and precision, and Rao Thai Eatery delivered on both fronts.Plus, I was fortunate to be served by a remarkable young lady who truly enhanced my dining experience. I had the Pad Thai, chicken skin deep fried, papaya salad, fried rice, ...and it was nothing short of spectacular. An outstanding Thai restaurant in Sacramento and Elk Grove. Each dish is full of flavor and the right amount of spice. Ingredients are of a higher quality than your standard Americanized Thai restaurant. Cozy seating with lots of art decorating the walls. Service is friendly and attentive.

Came here thru the hype...Stick with the Thai Boat. Calamari was soggy, BBQ chicken was decent, and Drunken Noodles was alrite. Service was okay. Place can get pretty full quick. Would come back for Thai Boat only. Thai Boat 4.5/5

We love this local restaurant! We havent eaten at the restaurant, but weve gotten takeout many many times. We have ordered through the website and by calling in. We are able to customize the spice level for almost every dish, which is really helpful.Our favorites are the pad Thai, avocado curry, pineapple fried rice, coconut rice, and chicken h$ll (chicken wings not found on the menu), and the chicken satay.

So glad we decided to make the 30 min drive to this place. Was craving boat noodles, and they did not disappoint. Very flavorful! We also had fried wontons (barely any cream cheese), Lao style papaya (in my personal opinion it tasted more like Thai style), oyster shooter (freaking delicious but 3.50 for one shooter), and mango sticky rice (Yumm)

I found a dead fly in my yellow Thai curry as I was almost done eating it. This has to be the most horrific thing that’s ever happened to me while dining out. The staff asked me if I wanted a new one, but absolutely not! Throw away the whole pot if anything. I lost my appetite. The staff apologized and didn’t charge me for the meal. I understand it was probably an accident as the weather is warm and flies just tend to buzz it’s way around… but I’m just traumatized that I ate most of it before discovering that dead fly in my curry. I will not be a returning customer. I can’t get it out of my head. Flies are so disgusting to me. I can’t even eat my food when a fly lands on it, but to find a dead one in it is a whole different story.

Friendly staff & service. Cute decor with a modern Thai farmhouse look. Food is good here. Shrimp Pad Thai is good. The Beef Boat Noodle is on point with flavor. The beef is not tender though. The Nam Kao Tod has good flavor, however, it is made in a lazy way where the rice is not crispy as it normally should be in this dish. Too greasy as well. Our server never introduced himself, but he was unaware of their beer selection & its not on their menu. They only carry Singha, Beer Lao & Blue Moon in a bottle. We like Singha & he chilled it for us.

On the menu Thai Boat Noodles is $12.50, but the server charge $15 for the noodle. The server reasoning was that we order beef so it’s additional $2.50 which wasn’t presented on the menu stating additional cost for meat choices. The male server wasn’t very helpful, set down for 20 minutes without any type of service provided. PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS FOR HIDDEN PRICE ADDED ON YOUR RECEIPT AT THE EBD OF YOUR MEAL AND I ADVISED THAT YOU CHECK YOUR RECEIPT BEFORE YOU PAID.

Ive driven by this place a bunch of times because Im a frequent flyer to Cool Tea Bar a few doors down. Today I was in the mood for Thai so I decided to drop in to try it. Its supposed to be 100 degrees today and as I walked in I could feel the AC here was struggling to keep the inside cool. The waiter greeted us when we walked in and pointed us to sit at a two seat table. I looked around and noticed the place was empty so I asked to be sat at a larger table. I was ignored so I just sat at a different table.The menu is normal for a Thai restaurant. Nothing really standing out. I chose the pork jerky off of the lunch specials and my wife ordered the boat noodle. We also placed an order for papaya salad. The waiter seemed new and didnt really know the menu when I asked a few questions about the items but i wasnt bothered by it.The papaya salad came out and was placed in front of us. The waiter walked away so I continued my conversation with my wife. A few minutes passed and my wife asked me if he was coming back with small plates for us to eat the salad from. I looked up and he was syanding at the register. I waived my hand and asked if we could have some plates for the salad in which he responded yes yes I was going to get those as if it were on his to do list and I interrupted him. I ignored it yet again, determined to have a good first experience here.The food arrived and the taste tests passed with flying colors. The food no doubt is great tasting however portions seemed small. I didnt mind as I am trying to watch my portions but for less you could get more elesewhere. The dish I had was supposed to come with a tamarind based sauce for dipping but that never came out. My wife was disappointed that the boat noodles didnt come out with any pepper or hot sauces to add but was satisfied with the flavor as it was presented.Half way through the meal the waiter returns to ask if everything was alright. At this point I didnt want to ask for the sauce because my meal was practically gone. My wife however asked if they had any pepper or condiments for the soup. The waiter said yes they did have things and asked if we would like it. We said yes please but felt like we were offended that he never even asked us for any in the first place. We finished our food, paid, and left.If it werent for the food tasting well enough I would probably never come back. But since it is next to one of my favorite places for milk tea I might give it another chance in the future but definitely not my first choice for Thai food. I will update my review of this place in the future if decide to eat there again but this first experience didnt go so well, but first impressions go a long way.

This place is great! Has some Thai dishes that most restaurants dont have on their menu. Definitely legitWarning-dont come here during dinner time on Fridays and Saturdays. Youll have to wait more than an hour to get your food. Oh and the music is way too loud for a sit down restaurant.

Rao never disappoints in the food and service! Yellow curry level 5 spice was absolutely amazing. My 1 year old absolutely loves eating here. And the crying tiger! I HIGHLY recommend this spot! Definitely would love to have them cater for my wedding.

Im a huge fan of Thai foods and have been trying different places in the area. This restaurant may not have the best Thai dishes but you can find some very good ones in the menu, with slightly different taste from the other restaurants. The staffs are nice and the environment is so cozy. This is a great place to try.

We used to live a few blocks away and when we lived nearby, we went to this place all the time. My kids love the boatnoodles so everytime were back in EG, we just had to stop by. During Covid-19, dine in was closed and we couldnt really do take out since we dont have a place to eat at but they accommodated us and let us eat in their patio area. It was about 90 degrees out and they had a fan blowing to keep us cool. Very friendly servers and of course food was always to our standards. FYI, I was anemic when I was pregnant with them so I had a lot of boatnoodles as well since I dont eat much meat so maybe this is why they love it too 😃

My cousin Mike had a horrible experience with the owner Sammy. Mike found out Sammy was cheating on Jeeranuch (Sammy wife) with his girlfriend and Sammy was taking her there when the restaurant closed so they can do it inside the restaurant. I wouldnt trust the cleanliness of that restaurant after finding out what theyve done in there. Sammy knew she had a bf and was teaching her what to say so they can secretly keep seeing each other and he lied to her that his marriage was fake and only married for a visa to stay in the USA. Falls very short of the average Thai eatery expectation. Got the yellow curry, pineapple curry and tom kha soup. Feels like the food was made to order from instant or other curry sauces. I was super excited to try this place so it was a huge bummer that my experience wasn’t so great. The calamari was super tough and it was really hard to eat. I got the pad Thai but in my opinion, the plates were too big and nothing really stood out. I ended up leaving with more food than I was able to eat there because of how much food was on the plate. Maybe if I got a different appetizer and a different entree, my experience could have been better.

Worst Thai food I have ever eaten. The drunken noodles had very little chicken, one tiny slice of a bell pepper and a few onions. Additionally, it was a very small portion and extremely greasy. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Although I live very close to this establishment, I will travel to get better food.

I typically go to Rao at least once a week whether I’m ordering out or eating in. I’ve never had any issues with the food or service until today. I ordered two pad thai orders via their online ordering system and received probably the worse service ever. I picked up my order: one I had requested to be spicy and the other mild. Once I came home and opened the plates, I realized neither were spicy like I had requested. Being someone who goes their frequently and orders the same dish, I knew my order was incorrect. I called Rao and spoke with “Bella” around 4 pm today. I told her I put in an online order and one order was made incorrectly. She asked what the issue was and informed her that one was not made spicy as I had requested. She told me that it is normal for it to not be made spicy even though I had requested it to be spicy. She said that I could throw some spicy sauce on it and it would be the same as being cooked spicy or next time I went in, she would provide me with a spicy sauce to put on my pad Thai. I told that in my previous experiences at Rao or any other Thai restaurants, I was never told to just “throw some spicy sauce in it”. Then she told me that the cooks will purposefully make it mild because people call and complain their food is too spicy. I told her that I have never had those issues and then she started interrupting me and cutting me off saying that there’s nothing for her to do. I told her offering me hot sauce or making excuses does not compensate for my order not being made correctly. Then she said “so what do you want me to do? Obviously you think I’m making excuses about your food”. I said “ma’am I called to let you folks know my order was made incorrectly. So if you stop cutting me off…” and then she cut me off again and stated “I’m not cutting you off. You want the order again? I’ll make a mild one..okay bye.” And hung up the phone on me. Then I called again and said “ma’am why did you hang up on me?” And she said “must’ve gotten disconnected” while telling the cooks I wanted a mild pad Thai. I said “ma’am, I told you my spicy pad Thai needs to be made again. Please stop cutting me off. I’m just asking for this to be fixed. You didn’t even provide me an ETA”. And she said “I’m not cutting you off. You have to wait 30 mins, we can’t expedite your order..we have others to serve first”. She was just so rude for no reason. I run a bakery and I have been stressed, working alone yet I would never be this rude to a customer. I will no longer be going to Rao. This woman Bella made me feel uncomfortable for asking for a mistake by the restaurant to be fixed even though I was asking politely. I didn’t even ask for my money back. That is no way to act with a customer. Please support a business that provides better customer service.

Love the whole rustic theme. The serving plates reminded me of the early 90s. Brought back so much childhood memories. Totally authentic when the FOB plates come out. Ahahahaahaha.. Staffs were quick and attentive. We ordered a bowl of beef boat noodles and my bf loved it!!! Hes a very picky eater and he continued to sip the broth even after he ate everything, so that tells u how good it is. The papaya platter was great as well. However, the BBQ chicken could had been better. I was expecting a smoky charcoal grilled chicken, but it wasnt too exciting. Chicken looked like it was precooked and heated. Will definitely be back if were in the area.

Boat noodle was good. Would come back again for that dish. Dont get the papaya salad tray, it was disappointing for $20. The white pork sausage is really pork meatloaf (was expecting actual sausage) and the deep fried pork was dry with not much seasoning. The papaya itself was good.

We have eaten in Rao during soft opening and after.We are very pleased that they decided to open in Elk Grove.The food is really delicious, beautiful to look at and you see people smiling while they are eating.You get to try dishes from Thailand that you have not yet tasted. We especially like the street food versions. We eat seafood and they have plenty of options and can make several dishes with just seafood or just veggies. They are very accommodating to say the least.The Owners and Staff are awesome. We have an awesome time every visit.Thanks for settling down in Elk Grove.

After my dentist appointment which is in the same complex, I decided to try out this restaurant instead of cooking 🥘 dinner. I went into the restaurant and ordered food to go. Inside the restaurant, there were only two people eating 🥘 dinner. The hostess was friendly and took my orders and it took ten minutes. That was fast. Previously this restaurant was owned by Wrap N Roll.I ordered shrimp 🍤 with mango curry 🍛 which comes with free 🍚 rice. And eggplant 🍆 with chicken 🐓. Both the dishes we’re great 👍 but not as spicy 🌶 as expected. I had requested extra 🌶 spicy.Overall, the food had great flavors but the portions were super small for the price point. Now I know what most of the yelpers meant by small portion.

This is a really nice place, and I would have given it 5 stars, but unfortunately our favorite Thai place still is our favorite, even after visiting Rao. I only gave it 4 stars due to the fact of comparing the prices and food portions to our fav place.That being said, the food was really good, service very friendly, and I LOVED the ambiance! Very trendy inside, the online pics dont do it justice! I definitely would go back. A place like this really should be more popular, in a heavier traffic spot.

I just want to let the customers that go to RAO that by California law the Fire Extinguisher must be inspected and certified once a year. The own of this establishment has chosen to ignore this law so as of Aug 3rd 2022 will be operating as a illegal establishment. If there were to be a fire and people were injured the case would move from liable to negligent. The general attitude of the owner when approached to service the Fire Extinguishers was Ill Pass on obeying the laws.Just a word of caution before entering this establishment.

Food was fresh and yummy. Weirdly there was no pineapple in the pineapple fried rice but it was still well a well made dish that I enjoyed. Took a while to get the check, had to get up and ask for boxes after sitting and staring at the waiter for quite a while, the employees were sorta just chillin amongst themselves for long periods of time but ultimately when they realized we were done they did come clear the table and make sure everything was ok.

Best Thai restaurant in Elk Grove. The Thai iced tea floats are amazing and the ice cream pairs well with the tea. The mango sticky rice is to die for. Easily the best dessert there. It’s warm, fresh mango with lightly sweetened coconut sticky rice. On top of all the goodness is a special dessert sauce that comes with the dessert. You pour the sauce on the rice and mango and eat it all together. It’s a must try so if u come here, u gotta order it.

Phenomenal in both service and food aspects. The servers were very kind and the owner came and made me and my family feel welcome. I would definitely recommend the mango sticky rice dessert and thai tea/thai tea float. Make sure to come by if you have the chance. You won’t be disappointed.

We absolutely love this place !!!! Food is great (it’s more of a fine type Thai food instead of a street-ish type - like other Elk Grove Thai place) but the service is even better!!!
