The gal working late had seen me running full sprint in an attempt to make it here from afar and at exactly midnight (yes, I felt bad and assured her I understood that I did not make it in time..).. Still she found it in her heart - at midnight after what’s presumably a long and exhausting shift, to let me quickly grab my one little super glue.. (which obviously couldn’t wait until morning.. 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️).It’s acts like this which are beyond the call of duty and are inspiring random acts of kindness that give me hope in humanity, even during the harder times.Thanks Ms. Ger[…couldn’t make out your whole name!]Keep inspiring :-)

Safeways are generally clean, well organized easy to get into and have most of what you want. This particular store also has a friendly casually conversational staff that is not always resident to other stores and makes checkout better. And nice during the holidays. Theres also self checkout to expedite. Fresh bakery, donuts, produce a decent wine selection, snacks, deli and it is in a mall area that has some nice restaurants. Theyre also some gift ideas inside the store and around the mall. Overall I consider this one of the better Safeways in the area.

I dont stop here too often but its good enough overall that if Im in the area I will stop in here for some quick grocery shopping. Its clean and reasonably safe and well-stocked, etc. If youre particularly familiar with the Safeway brand theres probably no reason why you wouldnt consider going here.

Something happened to this Safeway about a couple of years ago. Maybe it is the management. I used to be a regular for more than a decade. But now I try to avoid it whenever possible. I shop mainly for seafood and meat. The two phrases I hear these days when I go there to buy items on sale are: sorry sir we are out you can try maybe tomorrow and we are still cutting the meat. Can you wait for like um 30 minutes. This rarely happens when I go to the Safeway on Mowry. I love Safeways but this one is below average. I also go often to the Luckys in Charter Square on Fremont Blvd. The butcher there is really good. Items on sale are always available whenever I go there. That is an above average Luckys.UPDATE 9/22I went there today to buy some lamb chops and shrimp and expecting to be disappointed. I was so surprised to see that the store was well stocked. This was a marked difference from my experience during the last several months. It brought back memories about how this store used to be years ago. I also saw employees checking to see if everything is in stock. I felt they were making a sincere effort to correct things. I have updated my rating.

If u want bad customer service and a bad cake then order from here. First off pick up was so confusing and the lady was rude. Then they forgot to add the Happy Birthday and when they did it was all squished together and hard to read. I just wanted to get a nice cake for a birthday but they really killed my vie.

Wanted to buy a new york steak and none precut. I was told i’d have to wait 10 min because guy was cutting something and wanted to finish before cleaning the machine. A bunch of amateurs. Lucky supermarkets always have precut new york steaks. Avoid safeway in Newark. I don’t want to shop where they don’t care about making a sale.

Poor Customer service this visit. 😟This Safeway was not busy today👍👍.The store did not have any 🛒 shopping carts available, and no cart person rounding them up.We had to 🕵️stalk down a customer loading up their car to get a 🛒 shopping cart.The store was well stocked👍👍.When checking out, we met the cashier Elizabeth who was 😡not happy to be working today.Cashier Elizabeth had no common courtesies, like saying 🚫👋hello or 🚫🙏thank you for shopping at Safeway.During our transaction, cashier Elizabeth 😡 scolded me for having two loose 🎟️🎟️coupons.Cashier Elizabeth wouldnt even help with 🛍️ bagging, and there were no baggers to be found.Poor Customer service this visit. 😟

This review is for Elizabeth cashier today on lane 7 (express) half white hair (Appearing to be in her mid 60s working under the supervision of Josh). My mother, daughter 18 y/o and myself were in line to get a birthday card, e-drinks and a bottle of Grey Goose. I was astonished this specific cashier was giving every single customer in line, a harsh very hostile attitude, scolding customers for going over the limit, eye rolling, that we were fearing to get scolded ourselves when we got too the front to greet her. We guessed right… I can’t even explain the public humiliation she exposed us too holding up the line arguing with us stating that she couldn’t sell my mother the bottle because I didn’t have my ID & pointing at me. She advised she had to verify the whole group was of age (When I was not even the one purchasing in the first place) Do us all a favor Elizabeth don’t work in customer service to bully people if it’s racism your problem don’t work in Newark- It may truly be time to retire. Josh, I’m sorry to report we had a minor with us 18 and she wasn’t carded at all (Double standard much?) Please Safeway do better & hire better. This was my mothers 2nd bad experience with this specific cashier this is unacceptable behavior anywhere. Citizens of Newark Avoid her and go to Lucky’s or Sprouts. :)

Had a frustrating experience. Went in with my husband to pick up some groceries for camping. We were told that Safeway has a policy to card everyone in a group when buying alcohol. He had his ID, but mine is expired, but very clearly me. And we are both well over 30. When the manager was brought in, she laughably told us to be PRACTICAL! There would be no legal problem to allow my husband to pay, yet they insisted on enforcing this Safeway policy that is clearly flawed, or at least not equitably applied - do they deny parents purchasing booze if their children are present?? They continued to defend this policy to us and everyone in line behind us who (gratefully) were sympathetic to our situation.

Safeway is almost always very busy. Most of the time its a good experience. The lines are sometimes long, but they move pretty quickly. I have noticed that not all Safeways have the same items, especially specialty items.

TAKE PICS OF THE PRICES and make sure you get your $5 gift card or free item! I have had a wrong price scan every time I have come here.Stopped coming here a month ago for that reason but my bf wanted the real Pepsi, which is not available at the store I usually go to. When the acting manager, Ed (turns out he was NOT a manager at all but was posing as one, which was confirmed by the GM when she called me back after calling the number about price discrepencies), went to help me, he was very condescending; I had to ask him 3 times to stop doing so. He did not believe the pictures I took, was trying to look through the paper to find the price of the exact item I took a pic of with matching UPC, and then he DID NOT HONOR THE DISCOUNT POLICY (see attached pics 1 and 2).Ed claimed that the $5 gift card only counts if the transaction is complete. It says that nowhere on the sign, and the policy is actually a CA state consumer law that I am aware of from previous retail experience in this very state. Confirmed he was wrong by calling the number on the sign about the policy; he knew the policy but just did not want to honor it for me. Also refused to give me his name when I asked for it, and did not ring up all items in the basket so he accused me of stealing when I put all of the groceries, including the items he neglected to ring up, in the bag. Not my fault he did not want to scroll through the screen to make sure all items were on there and correct, despite asking him to do so.Sure this store does not really care about losing a customer but thought I would make others aware that WHEN the wrong price scans, the policy does NOT wait until after the transaction is complete to get the free item or gift card (depending on price).UPDATE: After the GM, Crystal (sp?), called me back at 6:45am the next day, in response to her DM passing my info after the price discrepency customer service call center confirmed that Ed was wrong, she left a $10 giftcard at the counter. I will be passing it on to my boyfriend instead as I have no desire to deal with anymore of this particular store. It was appreciated receiving a call that clarified that Ed was NOT a manager AND that when I asked to speak to one, as I was baffled by his actions, he said that he was the only manager there and I could speak to someone lower than him. She was not happy to hear of him claiming she was not there when she actually was. The GM said, on her own accord, that she will be sure to train the employees on the price discrepency policy as it is CA state law (has been for decades). Hope it works out for the sake of customers possibly dealing with a power-trippin imposter manager at this Safeway!

The Safeway is hard go to supermarket for family groceries. Clean store pretty well stocked and friendly staff. Parking can be a little difficult between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. during the week. Very good shopping experience!

For the third time in two weeks I’ve gone to shop at this store - this time for a fruit salad for Easter plus - and there were no shopping carts to be found. The other two times I was buying a few items and could carry items in a hand basket. Do you know how heavy three melons are to carry not to mention the other items? Another woman asked about carts and the Safeway employee just shrugged. You lost out on a $72 purchase and Luckys gained. What’s up with the carts?

Terrible experience again at this Safeway. I have spoken to management several times about the lack of shopping carts, but I always hear the same answer that the homeless steal them. I ask each time why not get a locking wheel system like the other retailers and I have heard from one that they dont work and from another manager that the property owner wont allow that system. I now go to this Safeway once every two weeks and buy only a package of sandwich rolls. I wont shop in a store that makes life so hard.I will continue to shop at Smart and Final in Union City who have the wheel locking carts and I know that they work as I have had the wheel lock up because the cashier forgot to scan the shopping cart.I am glad I dont own stock in Safeway if all of their stores are like the Newark Jarvis location. I think that this location is setting itself up to go out of business.UPDATE: Safeway responded to this original post and asked me to use the chat line. I used the chat and asked for the Store Manager to call me and waited a week and no call happened. Last week I reached back out asking for the district manager to call me and I never heard from him/her.Tonight I reached out to chat asking for the Vice President of Customer Care name and email address and all the chat person wanted to do was to ping the store manager and the district manager. This company obviously does not want to listen to customers.Safeway is in business to maximize profits and since the customers of this store can only purchase what they can carry in a hand held basket the store is not maximizing profits.If someone from Safeway reads this and reaches out via this forum, please send me the name of someone on the executive team. I am not going to drop this until I have a talk with a high ranking individual. I might have to reach out to the board of directors. I like the store and prefer it over others close by. HOWEVER, one of the representative named ELIZABETH is rude and uncouth. It was not my one experience. She has been at the self checkout counters and some days on the regular checkout counters. She gets frustrated too quickly with her customers and gives faces & looks. This has happened multiple times with just one person and hence I realized it is not just one off.

Easily the worst ran safeway in the east bay hands down. They never have shopping carts and the rare time they have someone in the lot they are on the phone not working. Customer service station nobody is working just some lazy guy at self checkout that looks over and hopes you dont notice so he cant be bothered for help. I stopped coming after today seeing 4 handicapped customers waiting in the lot to find a cart and were unable to get inside. I called the store to have someone come help but they said its not their problem that if they cannot come in then they are not a customer is what the amazing manager who answered the phone says. So remember this safeway doesnt care about us they want our money for their bad attitudes and shady business

Conveniently located right off highway 84 in Newark, this safeway location serves the the western part of Union city, Fremont and Newark.Overall the store is well maintained and clean and the store staff are friendly and helpful with the exception of a few who get frazzled and are not particularly receptive to the increase in diversity of the surrounding neighborhood.Their meat and fresh fruit and vegetable sections are pretty good. Well stocked and the quality is pretty good for the price.Make sure you sign up for their Just4u program and you can get some pretty good deals. Clip the deals, add to your cart in the app and scan the QR code on your phone with the scanner upon checkout.Shopping cart are limited as theyve been struggling with homeless folks taking away their carts. There are a fair amount of homeless people fair living along highway 84 behind the trees and under the railroad overpasses nearby.The parking lot can get a little sketchy at night. Its not lit well enough and opportunities for an undesired confrontation exist.

This is a pretty nice Safeway. Selection is good, including (important to me) dairy free yogurts, ice creams and cheese products. Staff was pleasant. Parking was easy. Good place to go for grabbing a few groceries in the evening.

Im never going back to this store again. No express lanes anymore. Always long checkout lines. Some of the staff are friendly and competent, but most arent. The prices you read on the shelf are often higher than what they charge at the register. Almost every time I go in, I am overcharged, and need to wait in line at customer service to get my 50 cents or whatever refunded. When I got back home yesterday, I looked at my receipt and they charged me more than five bucks more than the shelf price for milk and wine. Im not even going to take my receipt back to argue. Im never going back in that place. There are other grocery stores nearby.

Update!Go to sprouts!Just left this place again after giving them A chance to redeem themselves and even a bigger failure 😣 than the first time. Old Sandwich 🥪 maker is by far the worst I’ve ever encountered. Buy your sandwich from mr. pickles, or from a gas station ⛽️ instead. On top 🔝 of that, there are car 🚗 break-ins daily and burglarized stores 🏬 all the time. Shop here at your own risk.Always crowded and feels run down. This place has been operating at full capacity for years and it is apparent in the groceries they offer and attitudes of staff. No friendly faces just overworked souls. Parking lot is a disaster and forget about finding anything on the weekend. Luckily sprouts is across the street!

Store is huge! Has a lot of the healthier foods that I need (like keto bread). Only issue is the Seafood department and meat department: both had no one assist us despite waiting for quite a while. In the meat department there was a gentleman cleaning some equipment and ignoring us despite our attempts to get his attention. Needless to say we left without our meat and fish we needed for our meals.

This place is terrible. On one of our rare rainy days all of the carts were out in the parking lot. Not one employee went out to bring them in. They also offer little to no help inside. The quality of the packaging is much higher than the quality of the products. Overall you dont get what you pay for at this price inflated grocery. We avoid it whenever we can even though they are the closest grocery store by several miles.

This is a smaller store. I could not find some of the items that I needed and had to make do with what I could find. Also, they should have more cashiers on duty. I had to wait about 15 minutes in the 15 items or less line. The line for the self checkout was halfway down the grocery aisle. There should be more help on a Saturday morning.

Easy to get in and out. Better to shop earlier if you want to get milk and other high demand staples. App isnt any help with finding which aisle products are located in, which I know is possible since the Kroger app does it. Definitely more expensive than Kroger. If I was home Id go to Kroger, but theres none in this state. This is roughly equivalent to Harris Teeter in terms of products, but its more expensive than even that upscale grocery store.

A great grocery store close by. The only thing I dont like is how short handed they get. It doesnt seem fair for one employee at the meat department and one employee at the deli department to be doing everything by themselves with no help. I was watching the butcher go back and forth trying to help customers while the employee at the deli was trying his best to help the angry customers in the sandwich bar. They need to hire more people for the night shift and not just let one employee do everything by themselves!

There was this one very rude staff who accosted me at the door. All I did was attempting to enter without realizing there was a line. I am usually very good at getting in line, social distancing, letting the elders get ahead of me, etc...Most of the time there was no line. Just this one time I was distracted and didn’t see the line. All the staff had to do was to politely remind me there was a line that I needed to go to, and I would be happy to comply. But he rudely confronted me with some very harsh words. This is absolutely uncalled for.

Although the aisles are too narrow for the amount of foot traffic this store attracts, it is a fairly large store. The parking lot seems to be constantly busy.Like most Safeway stores in the area, lines are typically longer than necessary because they are clearly understaffed. Its hard to know whether this is a budgeting issue or an inability to attract sufficient numbers of employees in this highly competitive, red hot employment market.That said the staff (albeit, sparse) is friendly and already willing to help. The store is well lit and acceptably clean, but they have a hard time keeping the shelves stockedAlthough there is no indication this store is located in a high crime area, they have clearly suffered enough misdemeanor shoplifting losses to feel the need to lock-up their entire battery inventory and virtually all of the hard liquor -- even the under $20 bottles (but not the wine)!

Invariably, when I go to this Safeway the lines are super long and they only have 1 or 2 checkout lanes open. The self-checkout tends to be faster, but its closed at nights. Im not sure what time the self-checkout closes, but it was closed at 8 pm on the weekend when I went there.

I love this store. The premade foods are super good, and the variety is huge. They have a lot of typical American stuff and a solid selection of all types of food. Club Card deals are so good!!! You can get so many items at a discount if you have a club card.Unfortunately, their selection for other cultures isnt very diverse, but they still have a really solid selection that is good for basic foods. You cant get more specific items here, which is totally expected (a non-issue). For asian items (including central asia) I would go to a store that specializes in these things, like the 99 Ranch (across the street), Lion Market (these two are good for east/southeast asian items), or Herat Market (for middle eastern). Arteagas is good for Mexican and South American groceries. My only issue is that the items here are kinda pricey! If you want toothpaste or stuff BESIDES groceries, you should hit up the CVS across the street. I also cant speak on the quality of the seafood department here, but I do know that the fresh food bar here has pretty solid snacks if youre in a rush. The Safeway store in Newark is convenient to me because I live near it. I think the Safeway store at Fremont Hub is bigger and might have a better selection if people are interested in going to that one. Shop around though and compare prices because it depends on what youre shopping for. For example, paper products might be cheaper at Walmart. But if youre pressed for time and dont want to drive to Walmart with their larger stores and perhaps a longer checkout line than Safeway might be okay. Update: On October 7, I shopped at the Safeway store. I found the condition of the bathroom to be unacceptable. Granted, the bathrooms get a lot of use, but management needs to stay on top of that so the bathrooms do not look so rundown and dirty (see picture).

I dont leave many reviews.. and this may be my first negative one ever but this place consistently gives me a horrible experience. 10-15 minute waits in butcher area, register lines well into the aisles, customer service that acts like its forced labor, subpar produce, and prices high enough that i assume they just dont care to be competitive. Today i just wanted batteries... normal everyday AA batteries. I couldnt because they are locked up and i couldnt find a soul in the building to help me unlock. Pls consider investing more in customer service training and less on locks.UPDATE: its a normal day at 1:55 pm... 2 yrs after my initial review and i have been in line to pay for 35 minutes only to be greeted by a cashier huffing/puffing/scowling as if theyd just been told to do extra chores by their parents intead of going to the mall. Why did I come here again? At this point I have no one to blame but myself, since Ive had multiple horrible experiences here. Its the nearest supermarket to my office, but next time, Ill drive somewhere else.Today: Wanted to buy a bottle of whiskey for my friends birthday. Cabinet with even low-end liquor is locked. Finally got an employee to open it and take the bottle to customer service - they will not hand it to you. Also bought some sushi (risky) and a stick-on bow for the whiskey gift.Usual 25 minute wait to get out of there, dozens of customers in line, and two checkers.Got back to my office, saw checker smashed the sushi with the whiskey bottle in the bag, making it inedible mush that I just threw away. Idiotic bought at Safeway label stuck on whiskey bottle, which was also partially on the bottle label, ruined said label upon removal, making the bottle no longer suitable as a gift. So spent about $50 and what I got that was usable was a $1.39 stick-on bow. (I can still drink the whiskey myself but now have to buy another gift.) And I now have to go get something else for lunch.Awesome.

So today was my first time going to Safeway since the shelter-in-place. Doing my husband duty of surprising my wife with some roses. I always get a nice arrangement or a decorative vase from them. The only complaint is the lack of social distancing markers that should be on the outside of the store. I had the pleasure of a woman, wearing a mask, but only about 2 feet behind me. Her coughing twice didnt help the matter either. For what I went to Safeway for I give them a 5 but having to go home and scrub the yuck off of my neck from her cough because of the lack of social distancing rules, they get a 3.

The cashier I had was very, slow then he wanted me to bag my own stuff I looked at him and waited for him to get to bagging. I asked dont you have a helper to help you bag. He said Safeway wants people to start bagging their own bags. I sad no not me I pay for your service by buying at your store. He just looked at me and starting bagging. Oh boy, I may just have had the worst customer experience of my life. Yes, I am young and a millennial BUT, I think I have a similar view of this grocery store as do most people who have lived in Newark for 20+ years like me. I have been coming here for as long as I can remember. I used to be a wee little girl scout selling cookies out front. Yes, I am emotionally attached to this store, but tonight was probably my last appearance until a new manager comes and fixes this place up.My boyfriend and I were done shopping for our groceries and there were 4 self check-out machines working and 2 regular cashier lanes open. The lines for each register were through each ENTIRE AISLE, including the self-checkout line! I was appalled. We waited 30 minutes.Once at checkout, I asked the cashier how he was doing and he said he was good, but does feel bad for everyone who has been waiting in line for so long. He has spoken to his manager about how being short-staffed affects the customers multiple times. He told me that the manager, does not care, will give a customer $25 gift card for their complaint, and move on. Also, the manager disclosed with the cashier that, This is the only Safeway in Newark, the customers have nowhere else to go so they will still come here.THAT IS ABSURD!This manager obviously does not care about his or her staff or the residents of the Newark Community. Yes, this is the ONLY Safeway in Newark. And I WOULD LOVE to continue shopping at Safeway. Yes, Sprouts just opened up, but they are more expensive and dont have as many options as a more established grocer like Safeway. After hearing that this manager clearly does not care about the well being of the customers or staff, I will not be coming to this store any longer.After this conversation (Yep, that was not the only issue), the chip card reader malfunctioned at the register. MY CREDIT CARD WAS NOT THIS ISSUE. I have seen this happen to many customers at this store as well, but this was a first for me. My credit card was then deactivated because of Safeways chip reader malfunction. They disabled the function to put the card information manually into their registers recently. This Safeway has clearly not replaced or checked their card insert/swiping machines since the Chip reader has been installed nationwide.Anyways, I spent this Saturday evening skipping dinner because of this catastrophe. I was emotionally drained from waiting to pay for the food, having my card deactivated because of their TRASH machines, and then putting away all my melted groceries into my fridge late into the evening.#changemanagement #newarkresidentsmatter

This is one of the better Safeways in the East Bay that caters to the Newark, Ardenwood Fremont, and Union City. Always clean and never too crowded thats its unbearable but it does get busy right after working hours on weekdays and then the flower section on holidays. For the most part like other Safeways, the items are thoughtfully categorized in appropriate aisles. One thing they can improve is the amount of self checkout lanes but mostly times the lines arent too bad.

This is my neighborhood grocery store but sometimes I make extra effort to go elsewhere. The main reason is that this store has VERY few or VERY slow check-out service. Every time I go, I get optimistic that previous times were unusual but its not. There are never any baggers so customers have to bag their own groceries. I wouldnt mind if it was an all-Safeways practice, but its the only one I know that doesnt have baggers. To add to that, the check-out clerks are generally rude (ex. just stare at you and your things expecting you to know you have to do the bagging and then not help and give you a dirty look when youre not done when theyre already starting to ring up the next customer). Lines form very often but there doesnt seem any extra effort to alleviate them. Its too bad the service is bad since the store itself is pretty well-kept and stocked.

There is never any baggers. Cashiers stand there assuming the customer will bag their own groceries. As a customer you feel the need to just do it as the lines continue to back up if you dont. Unfortunately Safeway is the only local grocery store besides Sprouts which is wonderful for all produce (much cheaper than Safeway). I dont want to drive out to Fremont or Union City for groceries and if I want to bag my own groceries Id go to food max. They take a long time to restock items and when you see other people stealing from the store and you tell the cashiers they dont do anything about it. Yet, they stop other customers who actually paid and ask to see their receipt. What the hell......?
