2023-09-23 00:00:36In search of a late night restaurant as I had to work late, so we decided to check this place out as the momos were what caught my attention. The menu has quite a few items that it took us a minute to decide what to order. We went with:1) Lamb biryani - hubs really liked this dish, especially paired with the cucumber yogurt sauce they brought or with the tikka masala. Quite flavorful.2) Lamb Tikka Masala - the lamb was tender and enjoyed the sauce with the Naan.3) Butter and garlic naans - both arrived hot. The garlic naan was full of garlic flavor - more so than others weve had. Yum!4) Momos - Didnt realize they had a variety of ways in which they prepare their momos in addition to the steamed or fried versions that were most familiar with. So, we decided to try the tandoori style chicken momo. This dish arrived last and was served on a sizzling platter - probably my fave dish. Very flavorful - so good with the onions from the platter. If I wasnt so full, I wouldve ordered more different versions of their momos to try.The waiter was very attentive and checked on us very often. Cant wait to return to try other items.

2023-09-15 07:15:12I recently dined at Smikcha in downtown San Mateo, and it was a delightful experience. The first thing that struck me was the cozy and laid-back environment. The restaurant is relatively small, which adds to its charm and intimacy. Now, lets talk about the food. The Lychee Paneer dish was an absolute standout. The combination of lychee and paneer was unique and incredibly delicious. It paired perfectly with rice, creating a delightful balance of flavors. As for the garlic naan, it was spot on. The naan was fresh, fluffy, and infused with just the right amount of garlic flavor to complement the meal.Overall, Smikcha is a hidden gem in San Mateo, offering good food, good service, a relaxed atmosphere, and some standout dishes like the Lychee Paneer. Its a place I would happily visit again.I want to try their Momos.

2023-06-10 03:48:08An incredible Nepalese hole-in-the-wall, unassumingly tucked between San Mateo’s other bigger restaurants and storefronts. I got the goat curry and veggie samosas. Their curry’s flavor was vibrant, savory and meaty. Went superbly with white rice. The samosas were very crispy and not too thick with the outside dough, with a good amount of filling; they were sprinkled with an aromatic Nepalese seasoning blend that made it pop even more. Mint and tamarind chutney on the side as usual. I’ve been to the bigger Urban Momo down the street that serves similar cuisine, and for me, hands down this spot is better.

2023-04-23 05:04:35A delicious Nepalese restaurant that is open late. Might be easy to overlook given it is tucked next to some fairly busy restaurants in San Mateo, but their food is definitely worth checking out. Service is friendly and personal, and the dining area is VERY clean. The menu has an array of Nepalese dishes as well as various familiar Indian and Chinese items. Of the many dishes I had tried -- all which Id have again -- the Chicken Momo is what Id certainly come back for. Think chicken dumpling, but with a distinctively different set of spices and a chutney.Lots of vegetarian and vegan options here. As far as meats are concerned, you will find chicken, lamb, goat, and fish.

2023-01-28 00:20:54We went to this place after reading a lot of positive reviews. I wish I could rate this place with negative stars. We had ordered Garlic Tikka Fries,Chilli Paneer Bhaat Bowl and VEG MOMOS.The Garlic Tikka Fries were under seasoned fries sprinkled with some garlic. There was no Tikka seasoning in it which made the fries bland.Chilli Paneer Bhaat Bowl: The paneer in Chilli Paneer was hard and chewy. But the fried rice was good.VEG MOMOSWe had specifically ordered VEG MOMOS because we are vegetarians. The lady in the restaurant brought Momos and when we tasted it,it tasted unusual. We were in doubt because Veg momos didnt have any vegetables and there was something chewy stuffing in it. So when we asked the hotel staff(lady) she told casually that it was Chicken Momo. We had specifically ordered VEG MOMOS and the staff gave Chicken Momos. They were not even sorry about it. She asked if she could get another order but we had already lost interest to eat there so we asked for bill. We couldnt eat fries nor Chilli Paneer Bhaat Bowl nor the Momos. But the staff billed 21.95$ and told that she had billed for Bhaat Bowl n fries and gave 10% discount. This was like rip off because it was their mistake to mess up the order, spoil our dinner and then also charge for what we couldnt eat.So guys if you have dietary restriction then either double check what is served or avoid this place. We went here for our anniversary dinner and it was pathetic experience for us..

2023-07-16 02:17:49We came to this restaurant without many expectations, and the taste of the food does not disappoint. The service is extremely nice and gave us a complimentary chefs special dish. However, there are a few caveats that bring down the experience as a whole. The portion of the main dishes are meager for the price, especially because they do not include rice or naan. The portions and color of the food do not match the pictures posted outside the restaurant. The chicken we had was very tender and tasted equally as good. The lamb was tough but still tasted good. Overall, the portion/price of the restaurant drags this restraunt from one I would reccomend to my friends to a mediocre one-time experience.
