I love this place so much. I’ve been coming here with my roommate since we moved here. The staff are so sweet (free miso soup sometimes) and the tempura udon is so good. Wait time is so short and there are cute curtains in between the tables and they always play chill EDM mixes which is awesome. There’s a nice view of the pagoda and the street near the windows.

Away from the culinary acrobatics of ingredients in tourists traps, this heartwarming not so hidden gem will leave you with a nice experience and a delicious meal. The service is kind, efficient, helpful and attentive. Even in a busy and hectic day as the cherry blossom festival, smiles and attentions are ever present. This is my go to Japanese restaurant whenever I am in Japan Town. The food is better than average. Prices are reasonable for San Francisco. You need to pay for parking at the parking garage across the street. Service is good. It is a family friendly atmosphere but the tables are a bit sticky which is why the downgrade in the rating. But if you are seeking a reasonable price for Japanese food that is decent, you need to eat here.

Lots of restaurants in the area. We did not want to wait so we just got to this place. It was very busy when we got here around lunch time so I highly dont recommend coming when everyone is out n about.They got a pretty average sushi menu with lots of bento options. My chicken was a lil burnt but thats okay. Salmon was pretty small 😆.Overall we should have planned a better time to come here but lesson learned.

Great low-key place that offers price conscious lunch and dinner combos for both locals and tourists. The atmosphere is laid-back and comforting, with friendly and attentive service. The quality of the ingredients was high and my bf and I both enjoyed our food very much. Bf got the beef teriyaki bowl with an Alaska roll and I got the veggie tempura with hamachi-don. Both came with miso soup and were $18 something each. We were satisfied and stuffed by the end.

Ordered the special bento with Salmon Teriyaki (which saved the meal) and 5pc Salmon-skin roll. The miso (included) was hot and very flavorful. The salad was like a mini wedge, so hard to eat with sticks. The rice was warm and nicely sticky. The wasabi was fresh and well ground. The maki was the real disappointment - poorly rolled and did not taste very good. I would recommend the salmon teriyaki and possibly return to try other maki, but who knows.

The most incredible sushi I’ve had in San Francisco.The eagledalphia and is absolutely hands down the best sushi combination. (Japalpeno!!)Koit Tower, KPOP and firecracker are such magnificent rolls. The fish always tastes fresh!Miso Soup is typically on the house if ordered with other stuff.Waiters and waitresses go above and beyond to make you feel welcomed.Bathroom can be used if you buy food.Just really such a great, affordable lunch place :)

A simple go-to sushi place with all the classics. I wasn’t amazed, but was not disappointed either, however it is pricy for what it is in my opinion relative to other sushi places in the city. The shrimp tempura was really good though, high on my list, with a good crisp and not over battered.I would recommend a try!

This is by far the worst sushi I’ve ever had. I ordered a rainbow roll and it was filled with nasty imitation crab. They charged me as though it would have been real crab. All of the fish had a weird taste to it. Gross!

Ordered takeout online. They were busy and still very attentive to my pickup order. I loved the delicious fragrance that filled the space. The Ninja Roll and the Dynamite Roll were absolutely fantastic. More than enough for a big eater. A miso soup was thrown in as well and was perfect for a 60° September night. Ill be back during this trip!

I made a mistake of trying Ramen at this place but didn’t expect it would be this bad. The broth was mediocre and the quantity of pork was less. Also, the service was mediocre and rude. Its not the best cut of meat then why so stingy.Food tastes average, not delicious.Decor is old but nice. Vintage vibe. I visited Japantown in SF after a long day of sightseeing and was quite hungry.The tapura was delicious, please order it if you visit this place: not only was the portion large, but it also smelled and tasted delicious. When it was given to us, we did not even wait for it to cool down, we ate it while it was hot and devoured it fast.We had to wait a bit for the food to be prepared and given to us, but it is understandable as we visited during dinner time on a weekday when there were many customers. It was very worth the wait!The atmosphere was very cozy: each table was separated from others by blinds-like things, please see the photo attached. This gave each customer privacy that is often lacking in restaurants.Will be definitely coming back again!

Had a quick weekday lunch here and was pleasantly surprised by the menu options, price point, service, and quality of food. The tempura was a highlight, and both my husband and I enjoyed our bentos. We are on a quest to try as many of the eateries in Japantown as possible, but every time we are here, he asks to return to Sanppo! We will definitely be back.

Youre better off getting grocery store sushi. Rice-to-fish ratio is laughable, its a lottery if you get cold hard rice, small cuts of fish that dont taste fresh. With so many options in Japantown Id skip. I end up here because its one of the few restaurants in the area that stays open late, but after last time... never again.

Hands down probably the WORST pork ramen in the city. The broth smell funky (like chaep chicken broth) and too salty because they put white miso in it, the pork meat is like boiled (not roasted) and look so old and super low quality. I would not have their ramen ever again. the sushi are ok, service is fast and the place is cute.

Maybe the worst Japanese food Ive ever had.Miso soup was just thin yet murky super salted dishwater with two bits of sad micro tofu.Katsu Donburi was even worse: pork was razor thin, toothsome and suspiciously dark inside. There was no Dashi taste at all - no hint of mirin, kombu or bonito -nothing that resembles Japanese stock. Swansons chick stock in a can had more flavor.My partners Bento had two choices: Teriyaki Chicken - a few miniscule shaved slivers of meat. Other places would serve an ample heap of cut chicken but in this case you can already see the bottom of the bento box right away. Tempura was OK-ishAfterwards, still hungry, we schlepped across the street for a bag of munchies at Nijiya Grocery. Sad face.

I am a local and lived / worked in Japan for 16 years, I always eat around Japan town missing Japanese cuisine .First time I tried this place because my girlfriend proudly recommended it.It’s not good at all for the price we paid.The Sabah fish was long frozen, so as the shrimp in the Tempura, plus the veggies weren’t fresh even the broccolis top served was almost kind of yellowish .A very sad lunch experience 👎🏼👎🏼Don’t waste your money and time here.

Yummy! Come here for the lunch bento box special for just $12! Only took them 10 min to make. Parking is a bit scarce & more than likely to park in the garage where Benijanas is across the street which you have to pay for. Was pleasantly surprised by the delicious sushi & super fresh piping hot tempura. I enjoyed this restaurant very much. I had the island roll & it had lovely bits of thinly lemon sliced without skin (thank god) over the top of the salmon along with prawns, crab meat, cucumber, avocado, & tobiko (if Im not mistaken). I had the appetizer tempura which had 2 large prawns & a good variety of colourful veg which was very welcomed. It was fresh & the sauce was flavoursome. My food was served with a nice hot miso soup to start & the service was very polite & welcoming. Id definitely come back hungry!

When I lived in San Francisco, Sanppo was a weekly indulgence. My bf and I would attend every week (or try to), once we were finished with courses at the college. The wait staff is very friendly and really enjoyed seeing us. Some days we would even get free items!! The waitress would also call us to ask if wed like a table reserved on days that they were busy.The food was great. Im sure there is better, if you want to pay more. For example, Osaka is not too far away and are a lot higher class, and youll pay the difference. But for something cheap, delicious and filling... this was perfect!Their miso is amazing, the ramen delish, and the tempura pretty good as well. I think I tried most of the menu at some point, and nothing ever disappointed. Id have to recommend their special rolls, but thats because Im not a fan of raw fish so I never tried the actual sushi. The spider roll was a personal favorite!If I could find out how they make their tea, Id be making that stuff daily!! It must be a home brew, because Ive never found green tea with a peanut flavor anywhere since. They also have a delicious dressing they use on their salads that we discovered was also a house blend. They refused to tell us their secret. lolAll in all, Ive read all the different reviews from people, and have had my own experiences. The staff is great, but I have seen them purposely give poor service to people they find to be rude. So just remember, always be nice to the people handling your food!!! They are great people, and they like to be treated nicely. The food is great for the price, but there are always better options for sushi. In all, every time I go back to visit the city, this is always a definite stop for me!

Service was a bit lacking, but the food was pretty good.Three of us came here after splurging on random knick-knacks at Daiso across the street. Because of the intense browsing and rummaging through Japanese-made trinkets, we worked up an appetite and ordered a lot. For appetizers, we had chicken yakitori, gyoza, and chicken karaage. For entrees, we had sashimi, katsu donburi, and the chirashi bowl. Having come in to only a few tables occupied on a Sunday evening, we had expected service to be quicker. Our sashimi and chirashi bowls were the first to come out, even before our appetizers. Eventually the appetizers came out, but only one by one piping hot over the course of 20 minutes. Our poor fried with the katsu donburi got his entree last, so while was starting his entree, the rest of us were nearly done. It is understandable that since our entrees didnt require cooking, they were fast to make, but the timing of the dishes could have been better. Food overall was delicious. My chirashi bowl especially was bountiful with an assortment of fish, which made it well worth the money.I would suggest stopping here for dinner as it has been one of my better experiences with restaurants in Japantown, which tend to be more tourist-traps than food-focused.

As a struggling and often starving college student, its really nice to find a place with good food at a reasonable price. I can get dinner with a friend here for around $20 for both of us (hint, this means it could be a nice place for a date *wink wink nudge nudge*).Not only does the miso soup and house tea warm my heart faster than a silly feel-good movie or an internet video of puppies and kittens, but the bento lunch boxes have anything you could possibly want and the donburi will fill you up like a fat cat on an American holiday. If youre of age, the sake seems pretty reasonable as well. (My friends and I tried to buy some once when we were underaged, but we were asked for IDs, so you know this place is legit!)Its also supremely located right across from the J-Town mall. So after dinner, get up and walk around to try and burn off the delicious calories you just ingested. And if you happen to be around during the Cherry Blossom festival, get a table near the window and watch the parade with food and most importantly, out of the crowd.The wait staff is always really sweet and helpful, tip them well if you go there, please! And the atmosphere is nice and quiet, its a great place for conversation, friends, and food.

Good food but terrible customer service. Never experienced that with a restaurant. Ordered some food through Uber Eat and some items paid were missing (it happens). The food in this place is quite mediocre. The sushi quality is below average, and the menu, while inexpensive, is limited to the standard sushi/Nabe/Sobe/Chicken Teriyaki.
