This place goes above and beyond in customer service & food!As soon as we walked through that door, we were taken care of and our needs were met. The employee pulled our chairs out and sat us down in a matter of seconds. It was our 1st time, so step by step they explained the menu and what to expect. They also gave us a quick trivia about the sake, meats and what Shabu is.The broth was amazing! The meat was like eating a piece of heaven! The veggies were so crunchy and fresh! The noodles were so soft!The waitress came to give us more napkins and rice, she politely waited out of frame because she saw we were shooting a video of the food. They removed our dirty dishes quickly, brought us more water without asking, asked us if we needed anymore broth, noodles, veggies, rice and etc.At the end, as we were walking out the door, they all thanked us for coming in and one of the employees ran after us to give us a sample of the handmade toffee.Overall, it was the best restaurant experience ever and the best food ever! I will recommend this place to everyone I know and, of course, come again!

My boy friend and I have been coming here for about 3 years now. The staff is so friendly and so kind, they even started to remember our orders. They greet you so kindly when you walk in and Ive even had them open the door for me a few times while exiting just to say thank you and goodbye. The food is AMAZING, I dont eat much and whenever we come here I eat everything!! The broth, to the dipping sauces, to the meat, to the appetizers are all so delicious. Favorite restaurant:)

Wow best Asian restaurant in Palm Springs??? I think so!10/10 on food quality. Ingredients and even the drinks were top notch. I got a variety of wine and then got sake. It was warmed in a bowl of hot water to bring it to temperature and not dilute the flavor.Meat quality was exceptional and the hamachi was super fresh.Service was 11/10We were so happy with dinner we made a reservation for tomorrow (my wife and I are on vacation here).

Popped in here with the wife and kids before a movie down the street. I will start by saying the service was fantastic. All of the girls working here were on point and paid attention to us the entire time we were there. The food was good and it was a cool experience as we had never been to a place like this before. I have read about these spots, and all said and done, for the price and the portion sizes, it really just isnt for me. Dont let me discourage you though. It is definitely something to try at least once. We also met the owner who was an absolute sweetheart. I would probably come back here but definitely not with kids.

This place is amazing! The food is great, the service is impeccable. The people who work here are so caring, polite, and really make your dining experience special.We didnt set out to come here originally, but Im so glad we ended up here. We were going to dive at the place next door, but when we arrived we were told theyre closed despite the yelp listing saying theyre open. So we went here and they were also about to close, as was every other place in town. We were in town celebrating my birthday and I thought for a minute that we were going to end up getting dinner at a drive thru. But the manager was kind and let us stay.Not only did we have an amazing dining experience, but they also sang happy birthday to me as they brought me a delicious dessert.Thank you ladies for making my birthday dinner so memorable and fun and for your amazing service, the kind thats hard to find these days.

There is no better place to eat in the desert. It is our families family favorite place. The food is just so wonderful, the service is fantastic, and the experience so fun that you happily pay the higher than average price for dinner. If they had a bit more space inside and better parking, it would be perfect!

What an amazing experience! They accommodated our party of 6 quickly and took the time to explain how the hot pot process worked since it was our first time. The staff was amazing and the food was extremely fresh and tasty! We all enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and would definitely come back next time we’re in town.

We loved our dining experience at Shabu Shabu Zen. I brought my wife and kids along with extended family - a party of 7 - the week of Thanksgiving. Our server Wendy was terrific - we were new to shabu shabu, and she walked us through all of the options with great attention to detail. We were very well taken care of. And the shabu shabu was extraordinary! Great selection of meats, broths and add-ons. Everyone left happy! Thank you Shabu Shabu Zen!

Amazing service. We were carefully taught the cooking time of each item and many spices were brought out to make a delicious broth. The waitresses were very friendly. The sesame seed sauce tastes magical (included in their Shabu Shabu hot pot). Gluten-free and tree-nut-containing foods were labelled. The food was delicious! $87 total for 3 people.

Wow. This restaurant FAR EXCEEDED my expectations. I was pleasantly surprised at just the beginning. We walk in the and place is spotless. No crumbs in the floor or any smudges on the counter for the bar and tables. The service was AMAZING. Synchronized, organized and perfect portions. Food came out with a great bowl filled with vegetables and udon noodles and a side bowl of rice with a kind of “make it yourself” sauce kit. I literally have no complaints at all at this restaurant. Really was a pleasure coming here and will definitely be coming back here. Absolutely loved every minute of it.

The food is a 5/5. The service was so slow and disregarding. We waited over an hour to get our food. There were several other customers who left because of the service. It may have been an off night for them, but for us, it was our honeymoon and we were disappointed in the service. Especially for the price.Again, the food is great. Get the sukiyaki and ask for the egg to dip your meat in after its cooked!

So good. I was looking for Tapas And this popped up on the map. What a find. We lucked out and were able to get seated but that was a fluke, we’ve been here a few times and you need to have reservations. This place is always booked for a reason. What a fun experience, I would compare to Korean barbecue where you have to cook your food. everything is authentic from the appetizers to the Main course. My recommendations would be the carpaccio, the shabu shabu me so with the chili paste on the side, and add chili pass along with all your condiments in the dipping sauce’s.

Our visit to Shabu Shabu Zen and Sake Bar was great. The staff were all very friendly, and provided excellent service. We opted for the Premium Ribeye of “Washu” American Wagyu, and it was incredibly tender and delicious. We thought it was very neat to grind our own sesame seeds to create a sesame sauce to dip our meats in.As we ate that up, we ended up ordering a second order of USDA Prime Ribeye, which was just as tasty although not as marbled as the Washu. Definitely worth the experience.

Made reservations for two and ordered two orders of the 8oz A5 Kobe imported ribeye for $115 each. It definitely did not look or feel like 8oz. It also came with an egg that looked like it was from a cheap carton. It was very yellow and not dark orange like the higher quality eggs that are okay to dip into raw. Also, the vegetable serving seemed like it was meant for a petite woman. I devoured my meal and my appetite didn’t get effected in the least. I’m an 180lb 6’ man. My friend felt the same. We ordered two more orders of 8oz each of different meats and finally felt full. The bill ended up being $400 for 24oz of meat, sukiyaki broth, veggies, and four small bowls of rice. This meal was underwhelming and not worth it, especially for the price. I will say the meat quality was great, but again, it in no way felt like 8oz a serving.

Epicurean experience! By far some of the best meats we’ve ever had, even though portions were on the light side…but totally understandable given the quality! Im surprised of the high rating of this place. The service is nice but the food was totally ridiculous. I guess its meant for people who have no idea what shabu shabu is. The beef was cut so thin it broke up once it entered the pot. How can you even cook it? The meet should be at least a thickness where it will stay intact when cooking?The sake and variety available was good but the food let it down too much. They would work much better just as a sake bar with small bites instead.

EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!! We have gone to this restaurant multiple times but will NEVER be going back. We ordered the Sukiyaki and barely got any food. Got a small cup size bowl with barely any food in it, mostly just cabbage. Got one small piece of carrot, one piece of a small tofu chunk, hardly any mushrooms and a spoon full of noodles. They couldn’t even fill the bowl up with rice!We ordered 8 oz. Of steak and it FOR SURE was NOT 8 oz.!!The server had an attitude every single time we asked a question or asked for anything. She was very very rude to us right from the start. Haven’t had that bad of service in a long time!We left extremely hungry and disappointed in the food and service.We feel completely ripped off. Absolutely not worth $270 for two, didn’t even order any drinks!We for sure will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone anymore. Unless you have deep pockets and no appetite, don’t go!!!

I was captured the moment when a bowl of sesame was put in front of me and I was asked to grind using the pestle - after which our hostess poured a rich smooth paste of sesame sauce into the bowl. Meanwhile, the rice was what you could get almost only when you are in Japan - here, sesame sauce on pure rice was an unearthly enjoyment (same for the superb udon).Back to the subject. No one should miss the premium choice of wagyu beef offered here! The meat was so tender that it melt in your mouth … (take it out of the boiling water right before it turns color) After such a fulfilling meal just want to meekly let out a sigh: thanks for the hospitality and will come back!

Serious issues with service here. They agreed to take big tables and were not prepared and our service suffered. We had to beg random people for water and tea refills, they were never offered once. No one ever asked if we needed explanations of the menu (this was our first time). Service was incredibly slow, and again, no one offered help or explanation of how to navigate the hot pot. We were basically ignored until they needed our table, and then 3 people swooped in to clear the table. Unfortunately, we wanted dessert, and their faces were honestly horrified. They asked us the sit at the end of the bar for our dessert to free up the hot pot table and didnt give us napkins or really make any effort at all. Our original server finally showed up again when it was time to drop off the check (we had seen at least 4 and maybe 5 different people with no rhyme or reason at various times). They didnt even comp one of the desserts. I feel like we had no assigned server and if we got real lucky, someone might have time for us. At this level of restaurant I expected much better from them.

After a long day of travelling my partner and I were looking for a quick place to catch a bite later in the evening. We stumbled up on this place as it was open until 10pm. We arrived at 9:00pm, and were all shortly greater by a waitress who asked if we had a reservation, to which we did not. I stopped to pick up a Monday dinner. It was my first time. My son’s girlfriend is Japanese and I thought I could bring them to this place in the future when they visit me in Palm Springs. The service here is great. Though Ive had shabu in the past at other restaurants in the Bay Area the experience here is most refreshing. You know how you get that congealed gunk floating at the surface when you boil meat? The ladies here will skim that and make sure your broth stays clean. They do other niceties to make sure your tended to and feel taken care of, even if youre just by yourself. I also had the coffee pudding for dessert, which was heavenly.

Came twice trying to eat and both times I was told the kitchen was closed. It was 9:00 their website says they close at 10. The waitstaff say the kitchen closes at 9:30pm but because theyre short staffed they cant serve you. Save the time and go somewhere else. They wont allow walk-ins after 9pm. Very upset.

One of my favorite parts is drinking the broth made from the cooking water - you can taste the subtle flavors of everything that you have just cooked. And their sake selection is a great bonus. We feel that this shabu meal is hugely overrated. The beef is tender but does not taste any different from regular meat. We understand this is supposed to be top class bead but it simply does not live up to its reputation. They give a small tray of vegetable and some noodle. A regular individual will remain hungry after the meal. For this price, we think one would be happier having a nice steak elsewhere.

We came here for a repeat of a fantastic meal we had here a few years ago and……it did not disappoint!! We started with the okonomiyaki and it was almost too beautiful to eat, but fear not, we ate it all! It was freshly made and perfect with the flavors blending together to make each bite a perfect bite. We then had two shabu Shabu s….one with beef the sukiyaki broth and the assorted seafood with the miso broth. Both were terrific! We loved this place for dinner!! They gave us a tulip for Mother’s Day and were so sweet to my daughter. We had the edamame, rice cracker shrimp and seafood Shabu Shabu which was so good! Also cucumber sunomono with octopus has this sauce that is incredible, never tasted food like that before. Had a great visit! Even the people sitting on either side of us were wonderful, many people from LA and Newport Beach who made it a point to visit. Don’t let the exterior fool you, it’s a great place!!

Pretty good, but pricey. Its in a strip mall, so you might expect it to be cramped and cheap. Just expect it to be cramped. For 7 people it was $400 and only 2 got sake or beer. A flight of 3 small shot glasses of sake was $17. The beef is decent, but you only get 8oz unless you pay extra for a few more ounces. The vegetables are underwhelming. You get a single bite of enoki, maybe 2 onions and the rest is mostly cabbage and lettuce. You pay extra per person if you add a flavor to the pot. The service is decent, but its not like they are jumping to refill drinks or get empty dishes out of the way. The 2 sauces are maybe a little too authentic and no one at the table said they loved either. Overall everyone enjoyed the food and experience, but the portions were stingy for the price.

Not only is the food fresh, delicious, and homemade. But the service was OUTSTANDING! Every person that assisted us did so with a huge smile on their face. My friend is allergic to shellfish and the server was very knowledgeable of the menu and told us which dishes to stay away from. The staff was so attentive and the food was wonderful. We walked in without reservations over Coachella weekend. The owner warned us that we might have to order a little fast, but she was kind enough to seat us anyway. About halfway through our meal a reservation cancelled and she told us to take our time. So much fun and what a feast. This is by far the best dinning experience we have had in over a year. The Washu, yes Washu, beef was delicate and tasted very similar to the original japanese Wagyu beef. We took our daughter for her 13th birthday as she has always wanted to try it, and she loved it. The experience gets everyone at the table talking and we all shared our favorite bites. The staff was extremely hospitable and very attentive. It was our first time at a hot pot restaurant and they made it easy for us to understand. Loved it will for sure be going again.

Amazing dining experience! The servers are clearly enthusiastic about the food here, and with good cause, as it is truly excellent. The restaurant has a serenely comfortable ambiance, and there are little touches - like diners grinding their own sesame seeds in special bowls to release the scent as well as the flavor - that really add to the experience. I love shabu shabu, but Ive never enjoyed it more than at Shabu Shabu Zen and Sake Bar. I will definitely be back.

Shabu Shabu Zen has been my favorite restaurant since they opened in 2014. This is authentic. I have appreciated this style of cooking since my travels to Japan in the 1990s. The proprietor, Mehoe, has created this classic style of food preparation for us in the desert. If you want the best of the best, make a reservation at this superb establishment! This is an incredible place to eat and an amazing participatory experience, with superlative service. It ties with Kobe as my personal favorite restaurant in the valley. If you are unfamiliar with the Shabu Shabu method of dining, you will find it to be perhaps a little more challenging than you would expect to get when you go out to dinner. Basically, you select a broth, which is brought to you and placed on a induction heater built in to your table. You then place the food selections that you ordered (which can be noodles, vegetables, meats or seafood of various types) into the broth, where they quickly cook, and you take them out and eat them. One word of warning, if you bring a young child you will most likely need to cook their food for them. In any case, this is an experience not to be missed and I strongly recommend giving Shabu Shabu Zen a try.

This is a wonderful restaurant. The food is very high quality and quite flavourful. I commonly get the seafood assortment and love it. The beef is also incredible. As a tip, the last thing that goes into the pot is your udon. They give you a soup bowl that you will put in the cooked udon and then the broth from your cooking at the end. It is one of the most delicious parts of the meal. Also, the occasionally have beef stroganoff as an appetizer. This is a store visited by many professional athletes. Since golf and tennis tournaments are held nearby every year, the worlds top athletes come here to dine every year during the season.I have been contacted for two years to come here with the contestants to dine here during competitions.
