I’ve eaten here before, and it’s very good for noodles and dumplings. But I have to warn against ordering the mapo tofu here. It’s one of my favorite dishes and have eaten many delicious variations. Some are better than others, of course. This was, by far, the most disappointing version I’ve ever eaten. It was nothing like the spicy, numbing, umami-rich dish I thought I was ordering. Instead, it had canned carrots and peas and tasted mostly of soy sauce and peppers — though not the Sichuan peppers one expects. I don’t know the last time I left behind a full entirely uneaten portion of a dish, especially one I typically love, but it was inedible. It looks okay in pictures, but the flavor is very far from what anyone who loves mapo tofu would expect. Such a waste.

Ordered Chicken Sweet Sour and rice. The quality of the chicken was good, but the sweet sour sauce was awful. It tasted artificial from the coloring used. Not only does it cause cancer, but it also affects the flaovor.

This is a great Chinese Restaurant. Noodles are fantastic and so are the dumplings. Very friendly staff and service is prompt. There are days and times where you may see long lines out front, so be prepared to order take out.

Really bad experience! Shandong in China is famous for its handmade noodle dishes, so we ordered two regular noodle dishes, beef tomato and dandan noodles. I never expected that they got me this beef tomato noodle with fresh cut tomato in “water” soup instead of the real beef+tomato stew soup. And the dandan noodle is not dandan noodle at all. The handmade noodles are very thick and still raw inside. I only gave comments on noodles here, idk how other dishes taste like, but don’t order noodles dishes there!

Handmade noodles: we got the sesame paste and spicy seafood. The sesame was super flavorful compared to the seafood option. The noodles were way too thick for my preference.Parking was a nightmare, but you cant expect too much in ChinatownNot much seating, but once again it is ChinatownOverall tasty but not worth the trouble of parking. I wouldnt crave to be back.

Be prepared to wait in line (the place is small and popular for all the right reasons), but the wait is worth it, so get there early (and not too hungry).Here you can enjoy traditional and authentic Chinese food, you can see how they are making it from scratch, the staff is amiable, and you will not feel at any time that you are being rushed to finish your meal.Extra point (at least for me): your clothes will not smell like food when leaving the place.There isnt a dish you cannot enjoy, so follow your instinct and ask for what you most want that day. This time I enjoyed every bite of my dumplings.

An absolute staple of Oakland Chinatown. Any of the dishes with the hand-pulled noodles are a must try. Best to go with a group and order a bunch of things to try. I love their dumplings and green beans too. It can definitely get busy during peak lunch and dinner times, but it’s busy for a reason. You can always order takeout too!

I go to this place once every month or so like its a pilgrimage, because their noodles are amazing to the point of being a religious experience. Sesame noodles, handmade, may be the best thing to come from any restaurant in the bay. Employees are also sweethearts even when its horrifically busy.

Great restaurant in Oakland’s Chinatown serving up unique hand-pulled noodle and other tasty dishes! I’d recommend ordering family-style and trying at least the Sesame Paste Noodles and Eggplant! They were very busy even at 8pm on Tuesday so order takeout or get there early for a table.

The BEST hand pulled noodles. Love the green beans too, and Shan Dong chicken. Service is very fast (since they want you to get in and out because of how busy it is).Also love that they have a waitlist online that you can join ahead of time.The restaurant is pretty old and compact, so be prepared. It’s not a very “pretty” date spot, but the food is spectacular.This is a must-visit place whenever I’m in the Bay!

Best homemade noodles Ive had in a restaurant. I had a minced pork dish and wonton noodle soup which were delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Portions were big so we had leftovers to enjoy again later. I will definitely be back!

Came here based on the reviews, and it was pretty good! We arrived on a Saturday evening at 7:15 p and was able to park directly in front of the restaurant. The location is typical Oakland Chinatown, not the prettiest nor the cleanest! They were busy with lots of people waiting in front, so we added our name to their online wait list and was prepared to wait 30 minutes. There were a lot of people going into the restaurant picking up to-go/online orders.One thing that I do is judge an Asian restaurant based on who is actually eating inside the restaurant. For a Chinese restaurant, I prefer to see a lot of Asian people, so I was a little skeptical because it was mostly non-Asian, however, I can see how the word is out regarding this particular place, because people flock towards good food! Not many places do hand pulled noodles well, but Shan Dong is an exception!My GF is vegetarian and cant do soy sauce so we were limited, however, we ordered the vegetarian chow mein with the fresh hand pulled noodles (I just added soy sauce separately to my portion), scallop egg foo young, and the crispy onion pancake. Everything was delicious! The pancake was full of scallions and perfectly crispy... egg foo young was probably my favorite with the sauce on the side, and the veggie chow mein was nice and chewy with great texture. The portions were generous for the price. We were absolutely stuffed and needed to to-go boxes after our meal.Such a great experience with hand pulled noodles, and we will definitely be back! No pictures, as we were too excited and hungry that we forgot.

Its not the best, but reasonably priced and big portions. Noodle is fresh, they make them there, but not as delicious. Keep in mind that you need to add salt/soy sauce. Sizzling beef and scallop was meh. Overpowered by a specific spice (not sure what) and it was too saucy as I was expecting it to be cooked like fajita. Instead, they brought a very hot plate and poured the cooked dish into it.For the price and portion, quality was OK.

Incredible Shan Dong noodles - the chow mein was out of sight (they had the wok flavor with a hint of vinegar and the Shen Dong chicken was basically a waaayyy better version of general Tsao chicken with a completely different flavor. I highly recommend both dishes.The hot and sour soup was homey, but pals in comparison to the noodles at this place. I’m definitely coming back to try everything on the menu. Truly the best Chinese food Ive tried. Lots of vegetarian options. The vegetarian dumplings are delicately spiced and delicious. The hot and spice eggplant is perfectly cooked, tender but still a bit crunchy. My meat eating companions raved about the Shan Dong beef and honey walnut shrimp.

Then we ordered our food, which also came out immediately.We ordered the beef chow fun, green beans, green onion pancake and some of the dumplings and they were all pretty good. The noodles and green beans were flavorful but super oily. The housemade dumplings were okay - they were a little too doughy.Overall, it was one of the better chinese restaurants weve been to - even our picky grandma said it was good. 4/5 recommend!

First time here. Little cozy spot in downtown Oakland, that may be packed when you get there but worth the wait. Food was amazing! I had the ShanDong chicken based off the waitresses recommendation and I was VERY happy I let her talk me into that option. Wife had the veggie Egg fu Young and the half of the large portion she got, that I ended up eating…. Was very delicious. I recommend both dishes and the green beans 🔥🔥. I did notice a lot of people ordering the noodles and found out from other clientele that the noodles were very popular. So I will be back soon to try the noodles along with my chicken and my own order of Egg Fu Young. Well worth the ride from Fremont to eat here again. Enjoy!!

Had lunch here with my wife today. You can get on their online wait-list while you make the drive over there and youll probably still wait 15-20 min. Small restaurant, maybe about 10-12 tables or so, and its hot in there, as if the heat emanating from the kitchen has nowhere to escape except back into the dining room.Food is excellent 👌, particularly the freshness of the ingredients and balanced flavors of the sauces. Noodles were a little thicker and chewier than we wouldve like, and that was especially so with the dumplings. My two cents: get anything with the knife-cut handmade noodles but skip the dumplings.

We walked up and ordered takeout. While the restaurant was very busy, the staff was friendly and efficient. We watched as they made the pasta by hand. We got our food in about 20min. The first time I ever heard of this place was from an economics teacher at Laney college, whos class I took years ago, maybe as long as 10 years ago. He always raves about the Shandong Chicken! About 6 months ago, I started working in downtown Oakland, or as they call it now, (at least there part that I work), Uptown, near where the old Sears used to be at. So the last few months, Ive been hearing more and more of this place. Then someone mentioned that they hand-make their own noodles daily! That was when I just had to try this place out without delay!! And to my delight and satisfaction, it was well worth it, and exceeded my expectations!!! We went for a quick lunch last week, and they were really quick with our order. We got our food in no time, and made it back to work on time.

Ordered a Dandan Noodle from their menu which clearly specifies as Sichaun Style, I know the dish and its one of my favorite noodle. Came a funny looking handpulled noodle thats almost like sliced dough dipped in soy sauce mixed with peanut butter . Never know that is Sichuan style Dandan noodle. Asked the waiter lady and pointed to her the dish on the menu (Dandan Noodle Sichuan Style) just to make sure she got me right, and she said yes it is Dandan Noodle Sichuan Style. It seems like they tried to pass on somebody elses order on to me. It was busy so I didnt say a word, packed the noodle to go and threw it away. Does the picture look appetizing to you all? Also you can google Sichuan style Dandan Noodle, it is a very different noodle dish.

Update March 2023: just visited for the first time in a long time (thanks COVID!) And happy to report that it is still as good as always! I saw a couple at a nearby table with what looked to be beer, so that may have changed since my last review. Phenomenal food. Fresh made hand pulled noodles were incredible. Drawbacks inlcude no alcohol and always busy. Typical wait is 15+ mins for a table for 2. Prices are on the low end, so great value for the money.

This is one of the best spots in Oakland to get Chinese food at. I would recommend this place for anyone that wants an authentic and convenient Chinese meal. This place specializes in dumplings that are hand made to order as well as handmade noodles which I would highly recommend you order. I came to eat on a weekday afternoon and was immediately sat at a table by friendly staff where we were given a pot of tea and sweet and sour eggdrop soup. Everything we ordered came within 15 minutes and tasted delicious. The experience, food, and staff are all top notch here and I would highly recommend it.

I was highly disappointed here. After seeing the hype on Google and on Yelp! I thought it might actually be a good place to have dinner on Friday night. Unfortunately it was not..Shan Dong is very much just average Chinese food. I ordered the Kung Pao chicken (my go-to for somewhere I havent been) and potstickers. Kung Pao was very underwhelming, practically no flavor at all. And the potstickers came a good 10-15 minutes after the Kung Pao (???); I bit one and just about burned my tongue off it was so hot. Needless to say I did not enjoy them.Super crowded, super loud (no problem with either one of these, just FYI) had to wait for a table. Would not repeat.

First of all, don’t believe all of the five star reviews, most of these people are non chinese. This place had some of the worst Chinese food I’ve had in my entire life. I come from Socal and know authentic food when I taste it. We ordered the Shan dong shrimp and it was terrible. More than half of the shrimp was covered in thick flour and deep fried. I didn’t come here to eat fried flour? Then it was just drenched in soy sauce. Dude, my grandma can cook better than this.Although the people are nice, it doesn’t make up for the quality of food. I think you Bay Area people should get your taste buds checked out by a doctor. This place is a horrible representation of good northern chinese cuisine.Do not recommend!!

A single picture does not Shandong any justice - it is an experience that must felt, tasted and breathed to appreciate. At first glance Shandong looks like a small Chinese restaurant hiding amongst a row of shops along a normal Chinatown street. A lone sign tells you have arrived to this wonderful destination. Upon entering, the first thing that will strike you is the fresh dough being cut into noodles. Its a very meticulous process, one you will appreciate after you have ordered. On this visit I stuck with vegetable dumplings, the Szechuan bean curd, and vegetable chow mein. The freshness of the chow mein noodles and dumplings (also hand made) were readily apparent. If there is a negative, because Shandong is so popular it can be difficult to find seating. Good thing is that it closes around 3pm and opens at 5pm for dinner time - cool right? Review is for the beef chow mien with homemade noodles and shandong special dumplings. Both of these were totally serviceable if you just need a good carb heavy Chinese fix but they definitely didnt live up to the hype.Perhaps the biggest disappointment was the noodles. Their homemade noodles are handcut, rather than hand pulled, as I should have gathered by the woman who was cutting noodles in the front window. Not bad, persay, but no better and perhaps not even as good as I would make at home. They were kind of on the thick side, as well as being quite uneven in size, which resulted in them being slightly underdone. The flavor on the beef chow mien was fine but not much to write home about, a bit under seasoned, no wok hei to speak of and the beef wasnt marinated, it seemed. As a side note, if youre looking for alkaline noodles, this is not your place, at least not for their hand cut version.The dumplings were of similar quality. Decent, clearly homemade, but nothing that special. They had a pretty thick dumpling skin (which I think is indicative of a northern style dumpling?) and the pork and vegetable filling was fine but maybe slightly undercooked and didnt wow me with its flavor. The dipping sauce was fine and I think was a soy/black vinegar mix but didnt pay.much attention to it so not totally sure. As with the noodles, these dumplings were either on par with or not as good as what I would make at home so, while the meal was enjoyable and filled a craving, it probably wont be something I find myself craving and, were I to return, Id probably go for a non-noodle and non-dumpling dish.

Highly disappointed in this place. We ordered through Doordash and I usually get their noodles and wanted to try other dishes like hot n sour soup. Many of the dishes specify whether something has meat in it. It didn’t say on the app if hot n sour soup had meat. She said there’s 100 items in the menu we can’t add ingredients for all of them. Watch the noodles being made in the storefront if youre waiting to be seated and make sure to order the handmade noodles for any dish with that option. Ive never been there, but had delivery twice. Both times delivery was speedy and both orders were all there. Ive had issues in the past with other deliveries being brought cold or partial, but didnt hve any issues with them.Aside from their delivery, the hand-pulled noodles are delicious, the green beans were tasty, and the honey walnut shrimp were all good.I would totally recommend them to anyone. As for the restaurant itself, Ive driven by and it looks kinda small, but not sure exactly.EDIT: I have since been there.

In 3 years of living here I have never actually dined inside. I always order take-out and have always had a good experience. My favorite item is the sesame paste noodles. I also love the Special Shan Dong Dumplings but my mom (who is from Taiwan) didnt like them because the skin was too think and chewy for her.

This place is still super popular even with the pandemic going on. The portions are really nice a d the food is so flavorful. The only reason why I put 4 stars is because their ordering system is broken. When I try to do it on GrubHub or another platform it says I cant put in an order until 6:15 pm the following day. Its happened to me the last 3 times I tried to order so I have to call them and wait for there not to be a busy signal to put my order in. Also because theyre so busy the normal wait for food is over an hour. Pick up is simple and quick though.

Everything is delicious. Food comes out so FAST. Staff is friendly. Customers are friendly, too! We ordered 6 dishes for 3 people and WE ATE IT ALL. There were no leftovers. No waste. It was great. Getting seated will take forever and you may sit with strangers, but that didnt take away from the the experience.

Great tasting food and staff that understands and speaks English for those who cant handle the full Chinatown experience. Food is very tasty and their hand chopped noodles are very good. Their flavors for their dishes are above average but the place is definitely much more expensive than your typical Chinatown restaurant. You get what you pay for (meant in a good way). Definitely worth a try, not a place you want to go to consistently if you care about your wallet.

Although this is a Shandong Restaurant so the expectation is Shangdong food the menu here says else wise. I think their menu tries to appease to all Chinese cuisine instead of focusing on Shandong food. They have a five for $49.99 menu where you can select five items from their list of dishes.I opted for their hot and sour soup and it clearly miss the mark. the texture and quantity was good but miss the taste buds. It had good tangy taste but had no hot taste. The stir fried string beans was good and pipping wok hot but it had a lot of dead limp beans. The Chicken Curry is something I never had not hope I would have again. It had good color but no taste at all. Lot of onions and other vegetables but very little chicken pieces.The eggplant was fresh and good taste. The dumplings was surprisingly good and what you would expect.Coming here, stick with their local cuisine and opt out of their other stuff.

Dropped in twice while in town with a friend. Clearly a popular venue - long line-ups to get in. Dumplings are hand made on site and were good - tried a couple different varieties - also tried some soups (which were good as well - but a bit shy on seafood). I think dumplings and noodles are the way to go here. Definitely one of the better options in the area.

Maybe not the most romantic place, but there are some good eats! Thus the place fills up fast and very often a lind outside. We had egg foo young, which the parties were great with passable gravy and rice cost extra (????). Next was lotus chicken very tasty and served with half a head of lettuce. Hand cut noodles with pork and pickled veg was solid. Finally orders of dumplings which were very good as well. Cost was 50 bones but there were leftovers to take home.

Food. Thats why you come here. The noodles are hand made and you can see the basketball-sized pile of dough, sliced with a large cleaver, and then rolled and cooked. Delicious. The sweet and sour packs punch and the fried rice is light, instead of greasy. The dumplings are the size of golf balls, so how do you get the sauce inside? It must be me, but I used the chop sticks to slice them in half. Yeah. It is noisy and cramped. And popular.

I saw some good reviews so I decided to grab lunch there. Im always looking to try a good Mongolian beef with rice. They have this on the menu and I ordered that. Unfortunately, this is not good at all. Maybe this is not something they are specialized in but you can get an feel of other dishes. The beef was dry and cut in a bacon size length. It can be hella chaotic during the lunch rush, with a line out the door and a sign in yourself list hanging on the door.But its worth the wait if you have the time. So I finally came back to Shandong to give it another try. Both times I came early to avoid the lunch rush at noon. Both times I had the sesame noodles that are amazeballs. The first time I had the Shandong Beef, the most recent time the Shandong Chicken. I like the beef more, just because of the fried texture with the delicious sauce. We also had the green beans this time and those were really good. They leave them just crisp enough, so even though youre stuffed, you keep eating them because theyre addictive.

Tried the sesame noodles, meat noodles and dumplings. The sesame noodles were flavorful and reminded me of the peanut sauce youd get in a Thai restaurant. The meat noodles werent as flavorful, and the dumplings were just OK (nothing special).There always seems to be a line out the door here. So glad this whad great reviews and we decided to visit today, staff super friendly, food amazing and reasonably priced. line was out the door so make sure you put your name on the list as soon as you arrive. was very cool watching the lady make from scratch noodles while we waited and super tasty too. would totally recommend going . parking was very limited, we were lucky to get street parking on a meter but i did see a parking sign (maybe a garage or lot ) sign posted about a block or so away. Some great street art too, worth a wander just to get some cool photos.

My favorite dish is the lotus chicken wrap. So delicious and simple. But of course you also have to get a dish with their handmade noodles. The food here was amazing. We ordered the handmade peanut noodles (they make their noodles in house!), chicken dumpings, and green beans. Everybody knows this is a great place to eat. Im a regular customer. They make their own noodle. Everything they make is amazing haha. My favorite menu is the Shandong Chicken, Sesame Noodle, Scezuan Eggplant, and the Hot and Spicy Noodle.Its a great place to eat with your family and friends, however the place is always crowded and loud, so its not gonna be easy to talking to each other 😅Notes: There is always be a line whether its lunch or dinner. But its worth the wait.
