When you need dumplings and want them now Shanghai Dumpling King has you covered. These are some seriously delicious dumplings in a no frills - straight to the dumpling sort of way. Dont expect any fussy small talk from the staff - this place is all about the food. Make sure to get the green beans and cucumber salad they are awesome and the dumpling are pretty darn good too. My advice - order something off the main menu too - or else an all dumplings order can be very glutenous. This is a non fancy - straight to the point eatery. And do yourself a favor and skip the bathroom - it’s not in business for the facilities:)

Hidden Gem!We stumbled upon this restaurant spontaneously when our first choice had an unbearably long waitlist. What a pleasant surprise it turned out to be! The service was exceptional—prompt and friendly. As for the food, we savored the hot and sour thick soup and spicy pork and shrimp dumplings. They were simply delicious. Well definitely be back and highly recommend this place!

Shanghai Dumpling King was amazing! The service was top notch and the atmosphere was cozy and comfortable. The food was some of the best Chinese food Ive had in SF. I had the sweet and sour pork, chicken fried rice, and spicy wontons - each item was perfection! It was light and fresh, and the price was very reasonable. I highly recommend this place and give it 5/5 stars!Apologies, I ate all the food before taking a good picture, it was too good

I’m originally from Shanghai and came here with the expectation to have authentic Shanghainese cuisine. It’s very disappointing. The food here is very far away from what it should taste if you are looking for authentic Shanghainese food, pretty salty in general. I ordered Shanghai steamed dumplings, pan fried dumplings, wonton soup and Tofu salad.

The return of one of the best Chinese restaurants in SF!!! The newest location of Shanghai Dumpling King (other one on Monterey Blvd). Long time fans and newcomers alike will find the same incredible food and wonderful staff that has made Shanghai Dumpling King standout.I was devastated when the beloved Balboa location closed a few years ago and have been making the trip to Monterey Blvd ever since. So I couldnt believe my eyes when I saw the new sign out of the corner of my eye. It turns out many of their customers had been asking them to open up somewhere closer. Its a miracle.So much delicious food here you cant go wrong. The soup dumplings are top tier. Favorites include the scallion pancake, potstickers, green beans, mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, salt and pepper fish, and spicy wontons. Order anything on the menu, you wont be disappointed.I was so happy I ate the food before I got a chance to take pictures. I will updated next time I go.

Some of the freshest dumplings around. If I lived closer I would be there once a week. The lamb dumplings were phenomenal. Very welcoming. Quick and excellent service. One of my favorite places while visiting San Francisco.

This is by far the best dumpling spot in San Francisco. You can tell that each dish is made with lots of skill and love. The atmosphere is casual but the food is absolutely top-tier. I can’t recommend this place enough for lunch or dinner in the Castro.

Not authentic at all, sorry. The name of the restaurant is Shanghai Dumpling, but it was both precisely the “Shanghainese” dishes (weren’t that many on the menu to begin with) and the dumplings that were the worst. As someone who grew up in Shanghai.. I know my soup dumplings. Shengjianbao 生煎包was too fluffy, barely any meat inside, no soup inside, no green onions, and bottom wasn’t pan fried correctly. It was made all wrong, so I know for a fact that the owner isn’t shanghainese and might be cantonese. Xiaolongbao 小笼包was so big, lacked soup, and the meat inside (as well as the meat inside most other dumplings we tried) tasted like weird soft mush. Nearly everything else was a disappointment as well and there were a lot of spicy dishes which is not really a Shanghainese thing. Spicy chili wonton was no good.. so weird how it was drenched in an entire layer of very viscous sauce so every dumpling was like stuck. I think the best dishes were the vegetables. We also ordered the Shanghai style noodles and some of the beef pieces were too grisly and hard to chew. Glad I gave this place a try anyway but I should’ve known better being in the Castro.

We had a delicious meal here. We ordered all the usual suspects. Two orders of soup dumplings, one pancake, spicy dumplings that had a nice peanut sauce on top and dan Dan noodles. All were really good, nothing was really that spicy. My least favorite was the pancake but it wasnt bad. The staff were very sweet. There was no crowd on a Monday night.

Ok, I ordered the beef chow mien on a Saturday afternoon. Small PORTION for the price that I paid. $12+ just to be left hungry for more. I thought, L&L BBQ, Panda Express and a Mom/Pop Chinese restaurant can give twice that portion for $11. Maybe, get a bigger container is my only advice. Let me put it this way, if you ever go to a Safeway and see the Shushi grab/go containers, That’s the size. Overall, NEVER GONNA BE BACK.

I ordered last night through DoorDash. I ordered meat wonton soup, soup dumplings, and beef with green onions. The food arrived piping hot, but not burn-your-mouth hot. Everything was absolutely delicious. Tasted fresh. I could not have asked for better. Will definitely eat here again and can’t wait to try other items!

I liked 50% of what I ordered. Seeing as how they are relatively new here are some suggestions to improve things.Recommended items: Beijing pancake, shrimp and chive dumplings.Service:Stop running or hire more experienced servers. It doesn’t really speed things up and adds an overall frantic-ness to the experience.Food:Soup dumplings - remove the gristle before grinding the meat. The soup was light bodied and excellent. The flavor of the meat was nice and the grind size was great. I got an average of 1 gristle bit in each dumpling.Lamb dumplings - there was way too much filler in the filling. It became one monotonous consistency because of the filler.Tendon dish - I really enjoyed the thinly sliced tendon but it was a bit too thin to stay in balance with the thicker julienned cucumber. The tendon was also frozen which is the only way to slice it that thin but it was served with parts of the tendon still frozen. Crunching on ice really takes away from the texture of the tendon and it wouldn’t be much effort to let the sliced tendon thaw a bit more before serving it.

The waitress and waiter were nice. The shrimp dumpling soup was good. The cucumber appetizer was salty and not seasoned well. The basil egg plant was very oily. The salt and pepper fish was not fresh, extremely overcooked, and taste bitter. A kind of disappointed.

I ate here with a group of friends and everything was seriously so delicious. The soup dumplings were so tasty that we ate 24 of them between 5 people. The tofu was silky and perfectly fried, not dry or tough at all. The Shanghai stir fry noodles with pork were nothing to sneeze at either. It was all amazing!

Tried a couple of stuff. Hard no for me which is a shame really because the texture, ingredients and techniques were amazing but then ruined by the flavour. In particular, almost everything I tried was overtly sweet, from too much added sugar or msg. Tried xiao long bao, tomato beef, wonton soup and they all had that problem. Spicy wonton was the only dish I could eat a second bite, probably because the spicy sauce overpowered everything else.
