Came here on an overcast Sunday, it was pretty empty but it seems more like a takeout type of spot. Customer service was great, we started off with some hot tea, Thai tea and green beans which were perfectly crunchy and garlicky. We then got the spicy pork dumplings and pan fried pork buns.It was all great, not greasy. Glad I found this new local spot for dim sun 👍🏼

The restaurant in question is known for its dumplings, which I decided to give it a try. However, from the first bite, it was clear that something was not right. The flavor profiles of the dumplings were totally out of whack, and it was a huge disappointment to see the look of disappointment on my girlfriends face.The dumplings were supposed to be filled with pork and vegetables, but the meat tasted dry and lacked any discernible flavor. The vegetable filling, on the other hand, was overpowering and tasted almost bitter. The dumpling skins were also thick and doughy, making them hard to chew and even harder to enjoy.To make matters worse, the dipping sauce provided with the dumplings was also lackluster. It tasted like a watered-down soy sauce with no added flavors or spices to enhance the dumplings taste.Overall, I was thoroughly disappointed with the dumplings at this restaurant. The flavor profiles were off, and the texture was not enjoyable.

This place is SO good i’m surprised there are not more reviews! Incredible food that came out so fast even though it was a little busy. The service was awesome and it really seems family run. Soup dumplings and eggplant dish were my favorite but it was all good. The donuts were so good too!

Super friendly staff, free green tea was delicious. Very good value and incredible food. Would definitely recommend the pork and shrimp dumplings, as well as the garlic pea sprouts. We each order two dishes and had to take some home. Great even the next day.

We ordered from this place on doordash 3 times - the first time is a delight, but the rest were disappointing. This place is not authentic Shanghainese food and the food quality is inconsistent. Check out these sad pan fried pork buns, each of them is the same: 90% dough and 10% pork filling.

Ordered over the phone and picked up. Did not notice that 2 orders were missing and called back, he said he did not over charge us but tried to replicate how much our total would be without the missing items, we were OVERCHARGED. Tipped way to high for takeout as well. This is not authentic Shanghainese food. Portion sizes were small as well. I will not be returning here.

This place is great! Strongly recommend the Shanghai Xiao Long Bao - soup dumplings with pork and crab! I also love their Tianjin pork buns, not at all sweet. The staff are sweet and friendly too, and the free tea is lovely. Overall, dont be put off by the exterior! Everythings great!

1st, Shanghai is misleading. Its Cantonese style. 2nd, for good Cantonese food you need better ingredients. The pork in the dumplings is full of corn starch. The pan fried pork buns are very doughy, minimal meat and too much baking powder.

Huge variety of dumplings and dishes. Parking can be tricky around this area. The walnut shrimp dish was really sickly and I wouldn’t order again. And the bok choy pieces were way too big to be eaten without a knife and fork. Otherwise great food.

Greasy. Very Greasy! Dont order the noodles - they are all greasy. The Hot and Sour Soup was sooooo hot (no sour) that it was not eatable. The waiter saw the full boul on the table when we asked for for the check and asked if we wanted it to go. Uh, no. Nothing else was said. Not Let me have the cook (definitely not a chef) remake this for you. Nothing. Ok. So we paid the bill and left a very moderate tip vowing to NEVER, EVER GO BACK.

Among the worst Chinese place in SF. We ordered dumpling soup, fried rice, eggplant and beef mongolian. I specifically asked for less salt, but the beef and eggplant were way too salty and greasy. Fried rice portion was tiny (quite offensive because the ingredients is dirt cheap). Dumplings were very salty too. Yuck.How on earth this place got 4.5stars on Google?

Excellent for dumplings, and decent enough for everything else. I’ll often pick up here and there’s always a good crowd alongside me as well as dining in the restaurant. Thought Id splurge a little and order the fancy version with crabs roe but to my surprise the owner friendly reminded me that the CHEAPER regular version is more delicious, which I went with in the end. I go here a lot. The food is consistently good and reasonably priced. I get the wonton soup and sweet and sour pork. This appears to be a family run business with dad acting as busy, but affable waiter and granny acting as cook and mom and kids helping with the ever-present take-out orders. I prefer to eat in. There is nothing fancy about the decor, but I like the simplicitude of it and the friendly service.

We ate here on Friday, New Years Eve. Ever since Ton Kiang closed we have been searching for another place to eat Dim Sum/dumplings in the City. We saw this place on a list somewhere and decided to try it out. We ordered the spicy dumplings, spicy shrimp and chive dumplings, pea shoots in garlic sauce, chive pancake and pot stickers. We asked the nice waiter if we were missing anything good and he suggested the Shanghai dumplings and the steamed pork buns, which we added. Let me tell you, everything was AMAZING! The spicy dumplings came with different sauces, one with peanut and the other a thinner soy based sauce. Both were great, not super spicy but really good! The Shanghai dumplings were wonderful, savory and a little bit sweet. The potstickers and pork buns were really flavorful and good. The pea shoots were delicious. The chive pancake, while very good, was the weakest part of the meal (though was still devoured). Other than a light vinegar sauce that was brought out to the table nothing that wasn’t sauced in the kitchen came with any, which was sort of lacking. But since all of the food was delicious and cooked perfectly (not dry) I didn’t miss it in the moment.I’m already looking forward to going back!!!!

I ordered a couple of items to try this place out and was very disappointed. The Pork Buns tasted sour and the meat smelled rancid. The chicken chow mein was over sauced with barely any chicken it. The combination won ton soup had NO flavor, the broth tasted like water, and the general tso chicken was soggy and the glaze tasted more like sweet and sour pork. Save your appetite and money by not ordering from here.

We called in our order for lunch. It was ready really quick which is great. Theres not a ton of street parking. They have a table set up at the door and an attentive staff handling orders and pick up. The food is hot and delicious. I got Dan Dan noodles which has peanuts and quite spicy. My daughter got three vegetarian steam dumplings and theyre a decent size. She really enjoyed her order. We also got a side of onion pancake which is a must and for dessert sugar egg puff. I definitely will go back and try more dishes.

For years weve ordered delivery from these guys because we love it, but yesterday we went for the first time in person. Wow - its amazing when its fresh! These are the best soup dumplings in SF. Two years ago I would have given this place 5 stars but the service and ambiance had deteriorated. The restaurant now caters more to Uber Eats than people who dine in. The service is slow and the last two times we were there, delivery drivers were standing around our table waiting to pick up orders to be delivered. They do lots of takeout business, but the dumplings taste best when they are freshly cooked, especially the soup dumplings, which you have to get at any restaurant specializing in Shanghai-style dumplings. Limited parking, but the Muni bus goes right by here and it is a short walk from the Glen Park BART station.

This place reminded me of the Chinese restaurants I frequented as a kid in the 1970s. The dishes are largely American-Chinese. There are not many places these days where you can get egg foo young, which I still crave in a nostalgic way on occasion. Their omelette was fluffy and flavorful, though the sauce was yellow and over-salted. The dumplings were OK, though they are too heavy on the wrapper, too starchy, and the filling was not especially well executed. The service was basic and fast. An OK meal, but there are probably better low-key Chinese places out there.

This is our go to spot for dumplings! Parking isn’t too hard in the area. The food is hot and delicious. Ive tried this place twice and I really want to like it but Im just confused by all of the raving reviews. Their dumplings have so much corn starch in the filling, they dont even really taste like meat. Same with the wontons and everything. I have been trying to find the perfect Chao lian GAO (which is basically Shanghai styled rice cakes). This place, was sadly, not it. Ill admit it was better than previous restaurants I have been to but the huge turn off was how saucy it was. And not in the seductive way. In my personal opinion, it was drenched in sauce. And so was anything else. Dont get me wrong, this isnt a bad review. In fact, their Xiao long bao, or dumplings were great. Fantastic. Their tofu with vegetables was... Decent. I tend NOT to eat the vegetables because... I dont like vegetables but the tofu? Again, pretended that it was a sponge and almost cleaned the plate, saving the dishwasher another wash. But one of the prasie worthy things in this restaurant was the service. Not exactly the nicest people but not the rudest. But extremely fast service. Really fast. Its like the fast food of the Chinese restaurants. So... I gave this an average pricing. Nicely done, but not nice enough.

Shanghai Dumpling King is da bomb. I love this place, 1. the restaurants name is awesome, and 2. the food is DELICIOUS.We shared a number of dishes that night including, the lions head meatballs, soup dumplings, and the MUST EAT warm egg puffs with sugar. Those things are magical. Everything was tasty and quickly devoured. Decor wise, its a typical Chinese restaurant. This place has a wait at times, but shouldnt be anything longer than 30 minutes. Ive had Din Tai Fung many times and I think this place is just as good.

Im not sure if youve been to or know about Din Tai Fung, but I think this place is 10xs better (no fluff or wait with better flavors; this place is a bit more oily though).Highly recommend all the items Ive tried (you wont be disappointed)! I was really trying to hold back on writing the comment but the more I tried to eat the worse it got. I support small businesses and I hate doing this but I’m fighting the urge to vomit right now. So starchy....please listen to the other reviews. I genuinely cannot understand how someone could rate this plate 5 stars. I can’t belive I spent $30 on this and the to go portions were BEYOND small. I would have been better off going to Panda Express(and I hate panda). I seriously cannot belive they sell this food. The pot stickers were mostly dough barely anything other than flour and water. I feel horrible writing this but I am appalled. I hope this encourages them to actually put some effort into the food that make. Oh and even the chili oil is bad and the soy sauce seems rancid...how that’s possible I have no clue but it was gross too.

XLB here is as good as Ive had it anywhere. Spicy Wontons were also very good but a little different from most places: it comes drenched in spicy peanut sauce which is delicious. We also ordered chicken fried rice which was also really good and complimented the XLB and Spicy Wontons very well. All this came out within 10 minutes and it was about $25 (not including tip). Comolimentary hot tea as well!From the outside of the restaurant (and even from the inside), this place does not look very appealing but dont judge a book by its cover! I would definitely be back!

Pro: speed and tastiness of veggie dumplings. Con: overly rapacious upselling and they serve animal products and use plastic to go containers. yes as does 95% of restaurants. That said, we need to change quick to stop irreversable climate disaster. Veggie and meat-free dishes should get top billing on every menu, not a back page. compostable to-go containers is the next logical baseline effort. I ordered a dish that had black mushroom in the title but there was only 2 or at most 3 black mushrooms, lots of bok choy, but that was okay with me because I like bok choy.

SDK has a new location here in addition to the original one in the Richmond. Ive been to the original location a couple times and decided to try the new one since Im pretty close by. I was never a huge fan of SDK, and its pretty much the same story here.Beef Stew Noodle Soup - The broth had a good depth with various spices to highlight the flavor. I could tell that there was some ginger and cloves to give it some layers of complexity. I actually found a piece of dried shrimp in the broth, and that probably helps add some savoriness to the soup. Smart stuff. With the tasty broth, the beef brisket and tendons had good flavor as well, but some pieces could have been more tender. I was not a fan of the noodles though. They were thin like Cantonese egg noodles, but the texture and taste were really odd. The noodles had a strange soft doughiness. It wasnt springy and firm like Cantonese egg noodles or chewy like hand pulled noodles. It was just kind of soft and mushy. I really didnt like that.XLB - The skin was nice and thin, but it didnt break apart smoothly when I bit into it. The skin had this weird elasticity that made it kind of stretch when I tried to open it up and slurp the broth. It was kind of the same issue I had with Benus XLB, but at least these are a lot cheaper so its much more forgivable. Inside, theres a generous amount of pork stuffing, and the broth was pretty much just pure grease. Some people might not appreciate such a heavy handed approach, but it didnt really bother me. What bothered me was the flavor of the broth and pork, which was pretty one dimensional. There wasnt much to balance out the richness and saltiness. It really lacked the aromatic spices like ginger and green onions to cut through the heaviness. The aromatics also give the broth and stuffing a bolder punch of flavor. Without those components, the XLB didnt really stand out.Stir Fried Green Beans - I thought this was probably the best dish of the night. The green beans had a firm wrinkly exterior while the center was tender and smooth. Garlic, onions, and some fried cured meat stuff added a lot of flavor and crunchy texture to the green beans. It was well seasoned, and the stir frying added that wok hei intensity to the flavor.Sugar Coated Chinese Doughnuts (Sah Yong) - They came completely cold and not fresh. I didnt like that the sugar was just lazily dumped on top. It should be evenly coated all around the doughnut. I told a waiter about our lackluster doughnuts, and he had some explanation and comped it for us which was a nice gesture. I still think that if the doughnuts had just been sitting there or if the cook was off, then they shouldnt serve them. In their defense, freshly made Sah Yong isnt that common around here. Even venerable Koi Palace can be inconsistent with theirs. I feel like people treat SDK like its the only place in the city that has good Sah Yong, but Ive never had a good one here or at the Richmond location. Am I missing something?The food hasnt changed with the new location so if youre a fan of SDK, Im sure youll still love the food here.

I usually love the texture of fried Shanghai noodles, but these were just saturated in fat and already falling apart just minutes from the wok.Lions head meatballs tasted like they were mostly spam, and the texture made me think of mechanically separated meats. The broth had no flavor, and the wontons, though very plump, had little filling... most of the plumpness came from more wonton wrappings inside. The Shanghai steam (soup) dumplings were good, though definitely no where near the best. Perhaps this was because it was delivered. Even big brand Din Tai Fung SoCal is weaker than this longtime local favorite (which Id recommend Koi Palace over anyway).This Monterrey Blvd. location is more spacious, cleaner than the Balboa St. location, but that one is convenient if youre around GGP after a nice day at the museum. Dumpling King??? is almost always the look when we ask what next?The most interesting/surprisingly fun dish is the Crispy Eel. I love this place for the XLB. The soup, the meat, and the skin for the XLB is made perfectly. The skin didnt break like other xlb ive had at other restaurants, which was impressive.The onion pancake is super delicious at this restaurant too. The shanghai chow mein is another good dish to order with the XLB. The restaurant is cleaner and bigger then the original on Balboa too. Parking may be difficult but I normally park in the residential area up the block. The XLB is definitely a crowd favorite of this restaurant and worth a try.
