This is hands down one of the best Shanghai restaurants for lunch in the bay. Ive tried other popular ones and their food is nowhere close to this place. The sticky rice roll is made to order where other places were already made beforehand so its usually dry and hard texture. The Chinese donut is crispy outside and soft inside vs other places are just full of dough in and out. Their xiao long bao is not bad where the meat and soup lack the fresh flavors but still better than most restaurants.Their savory soymilk is always consistent and just enough flavor and sweet soymilk is also good. They have most of the traditional Shanghainese dishes and Ive been coming here for lunch at least once a month. Quality and service are always consistent and the wait is not bad if you come during peak hours. Out of all the Chinese restaurants, I always come back to this place and try something new. The price is affordable, the total is usually around $40-50 for 3 people after tips. Parking is easy and free. Definitely give this place a try and youll come out in a food coma from their large portions.

The sweet snd sour chicken is incredible. The chicken fried rice is bland and the chicken came out raw. We sent it back to get cooked further and it was still raw. The potstickers were undercooked and soggy. The shanghai soup pork dumplings were alright, not really authentic. They are clearly frozen.

Shanghai Dumpling has great soup and pan fried dumplings! Best Shanghainese food in the area. They have a huge menu that caters to all the best Chinese food including dim sum on top of all their other food. Their lotus wrapped sticky rice is great considering its the only place that does night dim sum in the area. The workers are kind and quite easygoing.

The worst and most bland, watery chicken curry and flavorless chicken chow mein Ive ever had and we eat a lot of Chinese! We walked here from our hotel after ordering the food for take out. Luckily we ordered the pot stickers and Shanghai egg rolls too and those werent bad. Food all looked good but it was pretty awful.

I was in town looking for a Chinese lunch spot. Upon arrival, the wait was conspicuously long, but decided to wait because the soup dumplings looked really appetizing. When getting seated after 30 minutes, I realized that the restaurant was severely understaffed not only outside the kitchen but also inside as well for a Sunday noon service. Long story short, we put order in for 4 dishes but only ate 2 because they simply couldnt turn around the remaining 2 dishes within 20 minutes of serving the first two. The waiter was nice enough to explain the under-staffing situation, but assessing the situation at the time, we suspected even another 20 minutes wouldnt be enough.On to the review of the dishes. The soup dumplings were actually not bad. I could tell they were freshly made and the dough skins were made very thin and chewy, just the way I like them. The fillings were fairly soupy and the soup was light and flavorful, but not too oily. Although they executed this dish very well, I was heavily disappointed in the other two dishes. The smoke fish was one of the worst Ive had because it was clear to me that the dish was made a while ago - too cold even for a cold dish - and the execution was rather poor. The fish tasted extremely bland even when I smothered them in sauce. I always enjoyed eating this dish growing up because the father-side of my family always prepared this dish. It really bothered me that they completely butchered this dish. Finally, the soy milk with Chinese You-Tiao is at best mediocre because theyve managed over-soak the You-Tiao to the point it was falling apart. All in all, if I were to return again, probably will just stick to the safe dishes like the soup dumplings.

Ordered the Shanghai stir fry noodles and pork pan fried buns for takeout. Reasonable price and reasonable portion size. Personal preference for pan fried buns is more meat to bun, but I know some people prefer more bun. Stir fry noodles yummy, not too salty, but could use a touch more sauce. But I prefer slightly less over more like how most other restaurants do it.Seems like they only have a few dine in tables so if you want to eat in, come early.

Lovely authentic Chinese food especially the xiaolongbaos! We also got some of the other buns and they were also really good.The restaurant doesnt take reservations so when we showed up on Sat around lunch time we had to wait about 15-20 min before getting seated.

I was disappointed in the Chinese food in SF Chinatown but lo and behold this little gem of a restaurant that saved my trip. The XLB was leagues better than what I had in downtown Chinatown. Im coming back to eat here when I fly in next month!

It has good authentic Chinese food there. The Shanghai dumplings were extraordinary. One of the best ones I have had in US. Walnut shrimp would be better with more sauce, but still pretty good. It was busy, but the wait time was short.

Xiao long bao and fried buns with condensed milk and sweet soy drink ♥ so comforting on rainy days. They give lots of vinegar with the dumplings too!Not a fan of the red oil chili wanton. We were the 1st group in the dining room for lunch, so we were seated quickly. Our server took our order and immediately dashed away because the dining room started to fill up. He was the only person serving the room, so he was taking phone orders, running in and out of the kitchen, cashiering the takeout orders, bringing waters and much more. The food was good. We especially enjoyed the tofu and seafood claypot. I hope the hard-working server gets some help soon.

Changed owners. This place run by cantonese now. Only thing good is Xiao Long bao. Avoid the watered down sugary soy milk. Avoid shanghai noodles. Niantic Gao was burned. Come here but again order only Xiao long bao. Everything in plastic cups is a product if covid 19 but with dine in less plastic not only saves the world it makes it easier to dip. And the lady screaming to the kitchen does ruin atmosphere

The service is really efficient and fast. The soup dumpling came in a huge stack and the waiter came to each table to deliver our order. But there was hardly any soup in each dumpling. I did not enjoy it. The veg was good and the pan fried bun was awesome. The noodles had plenty of sauce and flavor. The service was great and the restroom was clean. Street parking only. Enjoyed the food except for the soup dumpling.

Nothing impressive in terms of ambience and sometimes you need to get servers attention, but you dont go here for impressive decor or impeccable service. You go here for the dumplings. And you will not be disappointed. They will arrive quickly and they will be hot enough to melt your pallette. But they will be so, so good. They also have decent noodles and other dishes, but the more of those you order the fewer dumplings youll be able to eat, so keep that in mind.

Authentic Chinese food. Yummy dumplings!Came by on a Sunday evening for dinner. There was a line outside the restaurant, we waited for approx 15mins before we were seated.We were promptly served with tea and shortly after, a server came by to take our orders. We ordered Hot and Sour soup (3/5), Shanghai Dumplings (4/5), buns with condensed milk (4/5) and Beef with capsicum (3/5).I had wanted to order their savory soy bean milk, unfortunately they are only available for breakfast/lunch.The portions were huge for each of the dishes, enough for 3-4 to share. It was two of us so we ended up packing quite a bit of food home.Overall, the food are authentic and tasty. Typical Chinese restaurants are really noisy, this was manageable.Will be back again.

My experience was pleasant. Service is attentive and kind. Place seemed clean to me. Location is safe and people inside and outside were very happy. We ordered four dishes. The dumplings were tasty but not great. Kung Pao chicken was very tasty with enough heat. We ordered tofu with veggies that were not bad. The star of the day was a fish soup. Name is the same but taste is different from precovid restrictions. New owner? Interior has been remodeled. Booths replaced with table and chairs and no decorations. Ordered braised beef noodle soup, shou long bao, vegetarian dumplings and garlic fried green beans. All were good except vegetarian steamed dumplings. Had an off tasting bitter flavor. Shou long bao were good but were soupy and slightly sweet. Will return to try other dishes.

Im from Shanghai and have some concept of what I want which this place didnt always measure up. The xiaolongbao is okay, the dough is too thick. The spring rolls are great. The smoked fish is off in flavour. The rice cake was pretty terrible, no flavour. The salted pork and veg casserole is great. The casserole soup was also great. The service is scarce.

This is based on my experience of their soup dumplings only. These are supposed to be filled with a good spoonful of hot soup when you bite into it, hence the name. Thus, when I order some, Im not hoping to just get lucky that one of my dumplings will come with soup inside.None of the pork and crab soup dumplings had any soup inside...when they arrived, it was clear they rushed the wrapping and everything had spilled inside the bamboo steamer. Its really a shame...it wasnt that busy when we went either. Regular pork dumplings were juicy, but also same problem. Its just not soup dumplings.Cleanliness and decor is about the same as you would expect in any hole in the wall restaurant. Service was adequate, but food was subpar. Maybe their other dishes are better, but if your shops name is Shanghai Dumpling shop then you should really be excellent at your namesake.

Love their Mu Shi chicken! Of course their soup dumplings are good but other dumplings can be a hit or miss... Even though I like the unusual ingredients and sauce they use in the dumplings, my non-Chinese friends are not impressed. Stick with the usual and youll get the most out of it.

Its just ok, Ive definitely had better dumplings at other places. My friend, who is vegetarian, brought me, my brother, and nephew here to try. She said her non-vegetarian friend really liked it and she at least has some options. We had an order of the pork XLB, pork pan-fried dumplings, green onion pancake, vegetarian potstickers, and stir-fried rice cakes. These are all items Ive had at other places and I was underwhelmed. The wrapper on the XLB were too thick, though our order did come out nice and hot. There was a good amount of broth and the taste of the pork was good, the wrapper was just way too thick and doughy. Same with the pan-fried dumplings - they were almost as thick and doughy as steamed pork buns that youd get a dim sum, but with the little pork meatball inside. The green onion pancakes were fried nice and golden and had a good taste, they just werent flakey layers like Im used to, but at least they were not oily. I didnt try the vegetarian potstickers but they did erroneously give us pork ones at first which my vegetarian friend found out after she bit into one. The rice cakes were ok, nothing extra special about them.It was easy to find street parking and walk right in to get a table for 4 at 6:30 on a Sunday, but I dont know that Im ever planning to go back.

If you come here on the weekend or any other peak time, be ready to wait. We waited for 40 minutes for Sunday lunch.The food here is definitely better than the average dumpling place. We had the soup dumplings (xiao long bao) and a few other varieties. The service was great. The owners and waiters treated us like children.The decor and atmosphere is standard for true Chinese restaurants like this. Expect some hustle and bustle along with laughing, children playing, etc. Definitely the kind of place that could make you feel alive.Come here with friends or family. You wont be disappointed.

I went here on our search for shanghai Dumplings. Ive got to say, that these were some of the best that Ive had in the Bay Area. They had a tasty flavor and there was actually soup in most of the dumplings.As for the restaurant itself, it is not a flashy store front located right on Broadway in Millbrae. We were asked to put our name on a list when we arrived even though there was a large number of open tables. We were seated quite quickly, but the service was somewhat rushed and when we tried to get our waiters attention for either a glass of cold water or our bill, it was quite tough to gain his attention.Would I go back despite the service, sure!

As a newcomer 3 years ago to real Chinese food (you other midwest transplants probably know what Im talking about) I made it my quest to try xiao long bao (the steamed dumplings with pork & soup) at every Shanghainese restaurant that offered it.My wifes is Cantonese and grew up in the bay area with a restaraunt loving family, so over the years I have collected a list of dumpling rating criteria.The ratios are arguably the most important criteria to me. If there is too little soup, there is less flavor. If the dumpling is too thick, it can mask the flavor. If there is not enough pork...well you see where Im going with this.Other xiao long bao issues:- Served in a tiny foil tin that almost invariably sticks to dumpling- Very salty broth- Tough and/or dense porkThis is turning into a food theory post, so Ill get to the point.The Shanghai Dumpling Shop consistently serves delicious Xiao Long Bao. I know the ratios preference is matter of opinion and maybe you like really salty soup, but I think these are the BEST.And, maybe the highest praise I can offer in our hyper-critical Bay Area dining market: I have never heard anyone say anything bad about these wonderful dumplings.Google asked for an update on my review. Here we go. May 11, 2022I bring all of my visiting friends and family here. We consistently have had great experiences dining. I have had soup dumplings from many other places since my review, but these are still the best.I have tried Din Tai Fung in San Jose (and Taiwan) and they are almost as good as here. I think Shanghai Dumpling Shop has a slightly thicker/heartier broth with a more rich flavor, but they both nail my personal preferences for the ratios mentioned above.In third place is Little Shanghai on 25th Ave in San Mateo.

Excellent Shanghai style restaurant. We ordered pork wontons, pork soup dumplings, green beans, green scallion pancake, and the soy braised pork shank. Dumplings and wontons were excellent, but the real star of the show was the shank. Very tender. If you come here Id recommend double up on the soup dumplings and get the shank (I think they may call it the rump). Great meal for very reasonable price.

Came here expecting regular dim sum fare and was slightly disappointed. This place is really similar to the Xiao Long Bao Kitchen in South San Francisco, even down to their menu items. Of course I had to order the soup dumplings, which were pretty good. I also ordered green beans, which were decent, though they seemed to skimp a little on the green beans. I also got the bread+condensed milk option, which was good, though I think it would have been better with a cup of coffee instead of lunch.

I had dinner here with a few friends, and it wasnt bad. After a brief wait, we were seated inside, and our waitress was surprisingly nice. She was more warm and welcoming than what youd expect from typical Chinese service. Our food came pretty fast, too. Yay.Stir Fried Pea Sprouts with Garlic - I liked the strong garlic flavor, but some of the pea sprouts were stiff around the stalks. The flavor wasnt bad, but the quality couldve been better.Stir Fried Rice Cakes - Mushy. Some pieces kept sticking to my teeth, which was annoying. They tasted pretty savory, but some more wok hei wouldve been better. I should mention that Im not a super big fan of rice cakes, so Im a little biased here.Shanghai Stir Fried Noodles - Pretty good. The noodles had a tender, smooth bite that I liked. They had a savory flavor like the rice cakes but with a more enjoyable texture.XLB - The skins were thin and broke open smoothly. There was a healthy amount of broth inside, and it had a very slight bitterness that reminded me of ginseng. Although I liked that part, I still thought it couldve been more aromatic. More ginger and green onions wouldve made the flavors pop out more. The texture of the pork stuffing was a little on the gritty side, too. Still, the XLB werent bad, but I wouldnt go out of my way to come here.

At 7.95, the 小龍包 isnt the cheapest in town but at least there are 10 in the steamer. Skin was easily breakable so I think I only had one with soup inside. The 馅 was classic and good, so that redeemed the skin issue by a little. They also had a lunch special ($7.95) for several styles of lotus-leaf rice on a steamer, and each can feed two. I got the 小抄 one, but was a bland given how much rice there were.

A compact Shanghai cuisine place. Taste is pretty authentic Shanghai-style. Had soup dumplings, pan fried pork buns, and spicy wonton. They are not so juicy as expected. The taste of everything is good, but a little too light. Wish could be more flavorful. Spicy wonton is not spicy at all. It comes with spicy oil mixed with A LOT of peanut paste which is not supposed to have. Peanut paste makes the taste too thick especially when the pork filling has less flavor. Asked for extra spicy oil, still not spicy at all.

The house dumplings do not taste anything special, they have the smell of flour and meat slap together. The noodles are poor quality and easily broken. The hot and sour soup is full of vinegar taste. Do not come and waste your time at this place.

Meh! So my husband and I arrived 10 minutes before the kitchen closes so as we didnt know whats the best here we ordered pretty much everything ! We tried the pigs ears for the first time, it was interesting not as flavorful as you might think. The Eel was drenched in oil, we could only eat the pieces on top with the least oil coating. As for the dumplings, even though we ordered several different ones, they all tasted the same for us. Its not a place where we would visit again.

Although Ive yet to have a bad one, so Im still holding out for that. The stir fried garlic green beans were excellent! The spicy dumplings turned out to have straight up peanut butter on top of them...wasnt a fan. The service was just meh, but overall I was happy with the food taste and quality. Not very good. We are Shanghainese and found the food to not resemble real Shanghainese food. Everything was too tasteless. The sweet and sour pork was only sweet and not sour, the jicai soup was tasteless, and the salt pork rice was tasteless. It was probably a bad sign when we heard the staff speaking Cantonese.

One can find some remarkably poor quality Chinese food in the San Francisco bay area restaurants; however, the food I had here was the absolute worst Ive had anywhere. I felt completely ripped off.I thought the spicy lamb dish sounded enticing. The dish came with greater than 1/2 cm of animal fat/oil floating on the surface. The soup underneath was almost completely tasteless, with some bits of a flavoreless meat, and shreds of carrots and a few mushrooms. I ended up fishing around for the odd bits of vegetables in what tasted like a bowl of animal fat and corn starch.I took it to go, and tried it next day to see if it might somehow taste different . No - not even worthy as dogfood -- it went in the garbage.

Went in because we were hungry and no one could agree on anything else. Once in, other diners enthusiastically told us we had made the right choose (and gave menu suggestions). Our waiter appeared to be the manager as well, and was very patient with a bunch of American bumpkins. Food was outstanding, and portions were very generous. Cant recall the prices, but they were very reasonable.Not sure when we will next be in Millbrae, but would certainly eat here again (and am telling all of my Bay Area friends).
