I had a to-go order and ordered the Pork Fried Rice and Pan Fried Pork Bun. It was timely with a 15 to 20 minute wait. I highly reccommend the Pan Fried Pork Bun. It had a mixture of soft and crispiness with the surprise soup inside. It stayed warm for a long time. The fried rice was okay. I wouldnt reccommend eating it alone like in other chinese restaurants. Overall, it was fairly tasty at the right price. I would definitely come back.

This place should get better ratings. Food is good but dont come here for the atmosphere, you get what you pay for. I liked the fried baos and the noodle combo. Owner seems hard working, teapot was a bit dirty on the outside.

Pan fried pork buns is one of my favorite dish from Shanghai. The crispness of the bottom to the softness of the top from the steam. The pork the perfectly cooked in the middle with the heat from the oil from the frying. The chili and vinegar adds so much flavor and its bursting in your mouth. I love sucking out the soup. Shanghai pan fried pork dumplings are really tasty! Lots of juice inside. The top part wrapping is really thin. The bottom part of dumpling is thick with crunchy outside.

Would not recommend if you do not speak mandarin! Other patrons and service was extremely rude. Came during busy lunch time, signed a sheet to line up. Waited. Was next in line finally, and a patron just walked in and tried to take the table that was just freeing up. Quite rude, and waitresses were rude as well.Food was decent, a bit above average!

I don’t care what others say, as a native Shanghainese, this is the best authentic 上海生煎馒头 in the Bay Area. Don’t like the service or environment, Just order takeout and put on low heat skillet for 10 mins when get home.

My favorite Chinese restaurant. Small family owned. I come here at minimum once a week. Their food is uncommonly good (especially pork buns, onion noodles and wonton soup) and their staff are sincere.Well worth a 5.0, but seems like some reviewers were hard on their simple setting and their well-meant efforts to manage customer traffic in a small setting.Tip - They sell uncooked buns for a low price (I think $0.50 each) if you know how to cook them.PS - I would choose PF Changs for ambiance but this place for exceptionally delicious food.

This was delicious. Not sure about the reviews saying they treat you more rudely if you dont speak Mandarin. I was so scared about the reviews that I google translated how to say my dish in Mandarin when I went to pick up the food. I was better off speaking English. The lady was able to speak it and asked me to speak English. She wasnt particularly rude. Just neutral attitude.

Food seems to be authentic and it was flavorful. I dont speak mandarin and this was an issue. Menu is translated to English but the order sheet is not. It took us a while to fill out our order. Waiter didnt offer ANY help. She was even annoyed it took us so long. She sent a different waiter and he was also impatient and rude. Bottom point, you need a translator or to be a native Chinese speaker when you go to this place. Dont think I will go back unless I go with someone who is fluent.

I’ve been coming here for over a decade. Since moving to New York, I still miss just this place, the Palo Alto tofu house, and Garden Fresh. I think some of the bad reviews are forgetting - they’re a hole in the wall, they operate on small margins in a city that exploded.We’re not entitled to delicious, cheap, fast food with amazing service. Restaurants went through hell in covid, and service staff is clearly very difficult to hire in this area these days, I see help wanted signs everywhere. The people they have are almost certainly slammed at any given time. It’s unfortunate the food didn’t deliver for some people, perhaps they missed sometimes in training. But my food was as good as ever this time (🤤) and the front desk girl was plenty polite.They are take out only now.

Good food + Bad service. I never had such mixed feeling about a restaurant. Shengjian Bao is the best around the area. However, the service is also the worst. This front-desk lady probably is the boss, and she makes you feel like you are begging her for the food. And, she asked for extra money if you need source (what a joke). Both food and service are HORRIBLE!!!DO NOT GO HERE!!!Save your money and time, go to Ding’s Kitchen or Famous Food next door!We order cold beef for $6, and it came up with literally 10 PIECES extremely thin beef, just enough to cover a tiny plate. Their buns are just 1/4 meat with 3/4 bread that over cooked.Spent $20+ ordering food, ended up throw away large portion because its so bad.More ridiculously, after we left, the waitress came out and argue the tip amount with us...I will NEVER visit this place again!!

I go there every two months now for the past year, never disappoint! Quality and authentic pork buns with juice in the bun. They are attention to detail: they poke holes in the take out box so that the heat will not soften the buns, staying crispy!

The pan fried pork bun (生煎包) is the highlight. The other dishes we ordered were a miss - the jellyfish and cucumber appetizer was unabashedly short on jellyfish, and the curry beef noodle soup was a watery yellow that didnt seem like curry or soup. Go with someone who at least speaks Mandarin. The order sheet is in Chinese only, though the menu has both languages, so you can at least match characters. Food comes quickly. We were asked to leave when finished because it was getting busy.

There is only one item on the whole menu that is pretty good. Everything else is average at best. The biggest problem here is the service. Very very rude, especially if they think you did not order enough food. BTW, four items for two adults and a 5 year old is definitely enough food. Stop being greedy! The Shanghai shredded pork noodle with green onion sauce is smokey and delicious, with a nice caramelized green onion flavor. The beef curry soup is light and refreshing reminding me of our trip to Shanghai. The SJB was good, perhaps best Ive had in US but still not as good as Yangs in Shanghai. I like that they fry them upside down but thought base was too thickly bunched which made it chewy instead of crispy. On the upside this kept the juice in and they were very juicy. Id skip the Shanghai spring rolls next time.

I ordered wonton soup and pan fried buns. Neither are good. All the wontons are broken. The wontons must be refrozen and badly cooked. And the filling of pan fried buns are very fatty. Also the service is minimum. Im not satisfied with food and decided to give no tip, then the stuff and owner of the store stopped me at the front door and forced me to pay tips. Of course they denies how bad their food is, and claiming Were very popular for the food. To be honest, the so-called die for Sheng Jian Bao is below average, and the wonton cannot even be compared with most home made ones from Chinese living in Bay Area. Ill never come again or recommend it to my friends.

I don’t understand how this restaurant get 5 star before. I totally understand the 1 star review. I have the exactly same experience over there. Table, plates and all other supplies are sticky. Good shengjianbao is an elusive tasty treat in the bay, it seemed, until we discovered this place. A tiny place with not much to see.$6.75 for 6 very soup-ful and flavorful buns. We also tried and enjoyed the shredded pork & noodle w/ green onion sauce. We left full.I would add that, while these are tasty, they are a little bit different form factor than what I enjoyed in Shanghai (smaller, fried top-down, without sesame seeds).

Shanghai Family Restaurant, 10877 N Wolfe Rd, Cupertino, CA 95014 is also much better. Famous Food, 872 Old San Francisco Rd, Sunnyvale, CA 94086 is next to this restaurant and is a better choice.

If you ever have the opportunity to come here just order the buns. $8 for 6. Legitimately better tha din tai fung xiao long bao as you can actually have soup inside the bun. Skip the noodle soup, that is just a plain rip off. Once again as mentioned by other viewers on this platform the cleanliness of this place could be improved. Short version -- I have visited here many many times for years but seems worse and worse recently.+1 with some other reviewers, food might be good, but be ready to ruin your day (service)! Im just another pissed-off ex-loyal customer and will NEVER come again. I know a few other good Shanghai style restaurants around the valley.BTW, the price goes higher and higher but the stuff in the soup is less and less -- another way to save the cost in year 2018 ???Long version --The pan fried pork bun (生煎包) might be a highlight as other reviewers mentioned. But, but, probably as the operation cost goes up, now they will NOT ACCEPT your tip (cash only. They will remind you and double-check after you order the food) if the tip is less than 10% of the AFTER-tax total -- they will not provide any break-down of the price (no price for each dish you ordered, no price for pre-tax subtotal, only the handwritten after-tax total on the bill) -- even if the tip is great than 10% of PRE-tax subtotal (given 9% sales tax rate at this moment), which is the right base to calculate the tip -- they will now REJECT your tip and tell you sorry its less than 10%. What I cannot understand is -- if you do not use the right way to calculate the tip, how can you blame your customer? Just use the AFTER-tax total to fool the customer??? Ridiculous! The first time to have such experience in the U.S. Okay, my example: subtotal 12.5 + 9% tax = 13.65 total on bill, I gave $15 cash at first (no $1 in my wallet). You can do the math. I gave $5 tip eventually (40% of pre-tax subtotal) to please them this time (no $1 in my wallet) but I will NEVER come again.BTW, the table next to me was also told the same thing -- so obviously Im not alone here.If not for the bun, how can a restaurant with such service survive here? But as they start to argue for the tip in this way, hard to image the quality of meat used in the bun -- another reason not to come again.

The 生煎包 (pan-fried pork buns) are really juicy but dont really resemble traditional pan-fried pork buns at all. They were practically avant-garde: they are heavily pan-fried top down (which makes them nicely crunchy but a bit dough-y), there was no sesame dusting, and the top of the bun (actually bottom), is much thinner than usual. Still tasty though.

Their most famous dish, pan fried pork dumpling, is ok. It could use a bit more meat IMO. Baked pork cake is pretty nice. I like it more than the pan fried ones. Hot n Sour soup... Delicious pan-fried pork buns, green onion pork noodles, rice dumplings (zong zi), rice sticks (nian gau), mushroom with bokchoy, and wonton soup. I was going to order another noodle soup, but the waiter told me that the most popular noodle dish was the green onion pork noodles, and they were really good - we ordered 2! The Shengjian Bao is the must-try and actually is very authentic, extremely close to the taste of Shengjian Bao in China. The other dishes are also very yummy.
