This place is usually so good! The restaurant is clean and staff is nice. I ordered pick up today and as soon as I bit into my roll could feel how fatty the salmon was. This was clearly not sushi grade salmon. I’ve gone to this place for years but may need to find a new spot if this is what’s happening now.

Me and my girlfriend couldnt find a good sushi restaurant and came across this one. Staff was very respectful and customer service was great. It was a great experience and the food had a good taste. My only recommendation to the chefs is more flavor on the sushi. Overall, pretty good.

Finally came here on a Wednesday, and was impressed. Parking was easy in their small lot and the service was very attentive. The portions were good and the fish was very fresh. The prices seemed reasonable for sushi. Looking forward to coming back!

Incredible service and 5 star food! The Uni was fresh and sashimi had a delicious variety. We came here for the first time to celebrate a birthday dinner and WOW, so impressed! Price was good as well. We will definitely be back with more friends 🤩

Excellent sushi! Everything was so fresh and tasty. We got a few rolls and then the spicy edamame.The fish was flavorful and fresh, the rice was delicious and the rolls were wrapped so perfectly! They also provided a healthy amount of Wasabi and ginger which are my personal favorites.Highly recommend! They do dine in, but takeout was so easy!

I dont consider myself a sushi or seafood connoisseur...but this is the best, most reasonably priced sushi I have had in the bay. Everything was beautiful, fresh, well portioned and delicious. We gorged on more fish than should be possible to eat in one sitting and after extensive reflection...I have no regrets and will return.

Nobody is helping to serve you. I was shaking my head, lady waited over 10-15 minutes to get pizza for her and the kids and finally left. Employees were just talking to each other. She finally left. I had to track someone down to pay for self-service coffee. Funny, they must make it up during rush hour. Enough Employees.

Shimizu far exceeded my expectations for a Sunday sushi craving at 8pm. I dont write many reviews unless I feel particularly strongly about it and this is one of those times. The staff were very friendly despite us rolling in 30 minutes prior to close and the restaurant was surprisingly full of patrons giving early indication of their ability to draw a crowd of people. This food was incredible. From the asparagus beef being a lovely grilled beef option to the 18 pc sashimi platter full of enormous and fresh pieces of fish everything was exceptional. The highlight of the meal was dessert being two pieces of toro that melted in the mouth with an explosion of flavor. I would rate this place 10 out of 10 if I could it was that good. Im leaving the area unfortunately but I will make it a point to return here whenever Im in the area.

Went on Presidents Day as a lot of other businesses were closed. Got seated immediately and service was quite pleasant. We had miso soup, a sashemi sampler, and a couple rolls. I enjoyed everything we had including the hot tea.

I used to love this place for about 12 years. Then this past 5 months, especially a few days ago, I bought a bento box. It was $3.50 more. I was okay because the Covid 19 increased costs. However, the rice portion and vegetables shouldnt have been so small. Now I cant go there anymore.Updated review: I went again in mid Nov 2022 with a friend, and let me tell you it was fantastic! The meat and rice portions were plenty, tempura was plenty, sushi and everything. Service was great too!Keep them going, excellent restaurant!

Very satisfying dining experience! Fortunately we went quite hungry tonight because we know the meals are very generous and filling … and delicious! We had the vegetarian bento box and the salmon bento box. We love all that comes with the bento boxes— the miso soup, light crispy tempura, wakame salad, avo-rolls, Inarizushi, California roll, green salad.Service is very friendly and attentive. We love this little restaurant! Even when full, like tonight, it is not too noisy to have conversation at normal volume, which we also appreciate. I only wish they would open for lunch on weekdays. Highly recommend.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you’ll love it too, promise.I’ve been coming to Shimizu long enough for the staff to ask about previous relationships and my family, congratulate me on my engagement, notice changes in my hair, and not bother to ask if I’d like a large hot sake upon arrival - because I do.The fish is always fresh. The staff is always kind - except for the one guy who would rather be at a basketball game, but I’ve known him so long his apathy is comforting. And the food is legitimately delicious. As far as expenses over the last decade go, I think Shimizu has earned a line-item in my monthly budget.Reluctantly, for the first time in 10 years, I’m looking for “my new spot.” The only reason it is 4 stars is because their prices have gone up exorbitantly since the beginning of COVID. Not 5% or 10%, but close to 50%.Initially I thought, “sure, inflation” but then went to other sushi restaurants that are just as good and a single roll is far less than $18 (it was about $12 at Shimizu before the pandemic), they are $13.50 or $15, max.So if you are like many in the Bay Area and a very casual $60 dinner for one on a Tuesday isn’t a concern, then go here. Seriously. It’s a fabulous, casual, family-friendly restaurant with staff that will get to know your name.5 stars for 8:10 years. 4 stars today. #ridingtheinflationtraintothewrongstop.

This is going to be one of my go to places. I’m in love! First time here and staff was very welcoming and friendly. There is no waiting area in this tiny restaurant so be prepared to wait outside once you check in. The sashimi was amazing, super buttery and very fresh! The side dishes were also very good. There is a small parking area adjacent to the restaurant which is a plus since parking on Piedmont Ave. is a little tough. I am definitely going back to explore their menu a little more!

I like this little place in Oakland, and their variety of special rolls. Staff is very friendly and helpful, serve is fast. For me, special rolls are a bit too oily/greasy, but its more of the personal preference. When you take a special roll, miso soup is included.

One of the most memorable dining experiences Ive had. Love the Piet Mondrian walls and the baseball playing on the monitors above the sushi bar. The menu selection is vast! The fish was so fresh and it melted in your mouth. This is my new favorite sushi restaurant in Oakland. Plus, FENTONS is a hop and a skip away! If I could give 6 stars I would.

Clunky overstuffed rolls with huge chunks of cucumber, make for an awkward eating experience. Fish was fresh but the 14piece sashimi lacked variety, we got 6 pieces of salmon. It may not be the best sushi around, but it is pretty good and comes with a laid back atmosphere and friendly service that makes up for anything that the sushi lacks. I had such a pleasant experience here! My boyfriend and I intended to go to another place for my birthday dinner but since it was a long wait, we ended up going to Shimizu. It was a little bit of a wait because there wasnt much seating since it was a small store.We got the Ikayaki (grilled squid), ladybug roll, mendocino roll, and the flaming dragon roll. Shimizu used to be a great spot to go for mid-quality sushi for a reasonable price. Not the kind of quality fish youd get at Kirala or Kamado in Berkeley, but also not the price tags either. Now, Shimizu is MORE expensive than even the premium sushi spots. For example, chirashi is now $28.50, which is $3 more than Kirala, Kiku, Kamado, and Mitama, all of which are PREMIUM sushi spots. Im no snob—mid-tier sushi is a great meal when its affordable and accessible, but I just cant afford this, and there are better options elsewhere.I understand that thanks to covid, places have been struggling a lot and prices have gone up, but unfortunately these prices are just too high to justify me ever coming back in. If I can get better quality fish at a cheaper price elsewhere, theres just no reason to pay $11.50 for a philly roll. I hope Shimizu is able to find alternative solutions to making ends meet because the current pricing doesnt seem sustainable to maintain their consumer base.

3.5. Went here last night with a few friends. There is a 5 or 6 parking spots around the restaurant, otherwise plan an extra 10 min to find street parking. I shared the Spicy Juno and Charisma with my man. They were okay. The calamari was really good. The service was okay & the food came out fairly quickly. Its not as crowded as geta (but geta is prob better IMO).

This is a very good place to get sushi. My wife and I eat here a lot. Its reasonably priced and they have parking which is often tight on Piedmont Ave. We like to sit at the sushi bar and can usually get a seat there without a reservation. The sushi is high quality and they have a lot of different and unique rolls. They have a frequent dinner program where they will stamp your card. double stamps I think on Tuesdays. So far, hit and miss. I had their Oyako (Chicken) Donburi last week and it was superb (5 stars), but today I had their Katsu Donburi and it was underwhelming (missing the nice fry on the pork). In both cases they were generous with the meat. I have no idea where all these 5 stars are coming from - THE most un-Japanese sushi Ive had next to the Midwest. Their rice is long grain 🙄 feel free to roll your eyes, those that understand what Im saying; they tried to serve me a HUGE blood vein in my sashimi for $24 🤮ditto for eye roll; and their fish had the texture that only comes from deep freezerburn - tough with all flavor gone. Let alone their Wasabi was RIDICULOUSLY tube based and old. If you want sushi, dont go here - its not worth the money and is sub-par quality.

I came to shimizu on a friday night. It was recommended to me by a classmate that said it was her favorite in east bay, so I decided to give it a shot. There was a bit of a wait (15 min), but thats expected on a Friday night. We decided to order the chirashi, the spicy juno roll, flying tiger roll, and a simple unagi and avocado roll. 2 miso soups were included with our meal. The chirashi came first, and you could tell the fish was fresh! Theres nothing I hate worse than getting chriashi and the fish is tough and chewy. That wasnt a problem here. The rolls were good as well. The fish to rice proportion was perfect, and it wasnt too heavily sauced. Service was friendly and quick! Great place to go if youre looking to get your sushi fix!

This review is for Shimizu which took over the space that used to be a chinese restaurant. We Simizu for the first time last night and really liked it. I confess that we went there after stopping by Get-A which was closed at 9:00. Shimizu has a nice, warm atmosphere and everyone was really friendly. We had the Flaming Drgaon roll, the Lion King roll and the Agedashi Tofu. All were great! Will definitely come back again.
