It’s to die for!I have been looking for a good BBQ place and this is it. I ordered the brisket and pork belly sandwich. Yum.My husband had pulled pork Mac&cheese with bbq beans.Local beers and interesting sodas are also availableWe had so much food left there was enough for a midnight snackWe will definitely be back

We came to visit because of a friends recommendation and this is a good friend because they steered us in the right place.Smokin Js is tasty, focused on quality, and thoughtful in all aspects of their restaurant. They have wood fires smokers out back and obviously put a great deal of care into their food. I cant recommend the pork belly enough (try it in a taco). Or the boneless rib sandwich, which was so tender. And the brisket was so moist!Anyway, the point is, of all the different things we tried, this place did everything well. Go try it and see if you dont love everything too.

First time coming here based on Eater recommendation. Completely disappointed, all seating is outside which I dont mind except there were lots of cobwebs above us, the trash was near the seating with bees and flies constantly buzzing around, and out table was dirty. Then we ordered two TV dinner trays (ribs & pork belly), with bean crack, mac & cheese, potato salad, and brisket chili for $37, not worth it. Bean crack is too sweet, mac needed salt, potato salad was grainy and pungent and finally the meat was just meh. We left after tasting each item in search of something tasty. Ambiance matters, even if its just outside patio dining, the cashiers were friendly but not helpful. We wont be returning.

The food was fine. Decent pork and brisket. The mac and cheese was disappointing. The chicken was dry. The staff was friendly even though the space was cramped. I wish they had a real soda fountain rather than craft soda bottles.

Excellent service, great selection of eats and drinks! We had the brisket TV dinners with bean Crack, succotash, potato salad, and Cole slaw. Would recommend all! Appreciated the choice of fatty or lean brisket. It was smoked to perfection and had a great taste.

🌈🌈🌈 yall! I just moved here from Tennessee and was very wary about the barbecue out here in Southern California. I did a little bit of research and realized through trial and error that if a barbecue joint does not have either banana pudding or bread pudding, chances are they are not very good. I found this place online but hadnt been here yet. today I dropped my dog at the groomers and there happened to be this barbecue place I smelled, so I walked over and lo and behold it was the one place on my list I had an inkling would be phenomenal because I saw pictures of their bread pudding. let me tell you 🥹🥹🥹 I literally did a happy dance when I put this food in my mouth 🥹 so far Ive been in San Diego for a year and this is hands down the best barbecue Ive had since leaving Tennessee. highly recommended, the staff is so sweet and cute, theres outdoor seating and the vibe is extremely welcoming, but not in a weird way and they seemed to actually care about my questions instead of being annoyed lol. theyre also playing amazing music!! I will definitely be back and will recommend this place to anybody I speak to whos wanting some good southern barbecue. well done Smokin Js 💜💜💜💜💜🌈🌈🌈

The smoke flavor in the brisket is amazing. Portion sides are a tad on the small size but the quality of the food is top notch! Outdoor seating only, so bring a jacket if you plan to eat there.

Came here after seeing an Instagram review. Food was really good. I had the pork ribs and the beans. The beans were incredible. Ribs werent as tender as I was hoping but they were VERY flavorful and had a good smoke ring. Ill be coming back to try other dishes.

I want to put a 1 star here or less so I can hide this place from everyone else! This place is too good and probably the best bbq in San Diego County. Great service, great food, and great atmosphere. Open seating in open areas with a whiff of smokin BBQ. I got a variety plate with all types of food and sides with a pomegranate soda. The owner even came up to ask us how we liked the food. You can tell when food is made with love and this BBQ is the real deal.

So, the only other place in San Diego for real barbecue is Coops. Coops is very good...usually. Phils is not really barbecue, but the food is decent, if you know what to expect, which is why its so popular. Smoking Js location is very close, and highly rated, so I had high expectations.I had a 3x3, which is a mixed meat plate with macaroni and cheese, beans, and coleslaw. My wife had a smoked chicken sandwich which was fairly decent. The pulled pork was decently cooked, but bland, and relied on barbecue sauce all over it for any kind of flavor. It had almost zero smokiness to it. The barbecue sauce is meh, and I can make much better myself, and so can you. The large piece of smoked chicken I received was hardly smoked. It was okay, but not terribly moist, and not terribly smoked, so why would I have it at a barbecue restaurant? Unless the chicken is very very good, theres no reason to have it at a barbecue restaurant. The brisket was well-cooked, but oddly moist; like really really wet, and a weird flavor. I really wanted to like it, but the flavor was just so off unless you added barbecue sauce, and I really wanted a better barbecue sauce to compliment it. They only supply one flavor barbecue sauce. The macaroni and cheese was like something you would get at Vons in their deli section, but not quite as good. Make a roux, add some good quality havarti or a good quality sharp cheddar, some cream and some pasta shells, and it will be instantly better than that. I kind of liked the coleslaw. It was different from what Ive experienced elsewhere, but not bad. Oddly, the most smoked item on the menu was the barbecued beans. It was super heavy with smoke, and another unusual flavor profile. My wife did not like it at all; I found it somewhat interesting, but the overwhelming smoke flavor kind of killed the dish.Ive had barbecue all over the US, and California still needs something to look forward to. Unfortunately, this was not it.

I came late in the evening close to closing time so they were out of ribs and burnt ends. I got their brisket and theyre pulled pork.Dang great pulled pork. It might be the best Ive ever had.Dang delicious brisket. Up there with the greatest.I got their mac and cheese which was very tasty. very cheesy and very thick.And after tasting their chili, I can easily believe that it has been voted best in the county (or some such honor... I cant remember what the girl said) because it was freakin amazeballs!

We had a gift card and had never ate there before. The sandwiches were huge. I had the chicken salad on sourdough. Very yummy. The other guest had a BBQ sand with pig belly. He loved it. Fries come on the side but for $5 we were given a lot. Still have money on the gift card will be going back soon.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING BBQ!!!I have stopped here a few times, making the drive from Imperial Beach to get some of the best smoked meats ever, not campfire over smoked. I was lucky enough to finally get to try the Burnt Ends with a call ahead and detour while driving back from LA and so good I almost went to sleep. Go now, seriously, you will not regret it.The burnt ends come off the smoker, I am told, at 11am and 4pm so calling in advance before they sell out unless you are going to chill on the patio is a good idea.

It was a cute little place in old Town Poway. We found it by looking at maps and bbq places. We loved the look of the menu and decided to go. Prices were pretty reasonable. We ordered a 3x3 and a grilled cheese. The food was good. My boyfriend had the 3x3 and liked the pulled pork the best. The beans were very good, but the mac and cheese seemed like it was curdled. Just graining and not very pleasant to eat. The chicken was juicy and tasted great. So overall a good place for. BBQ stop. If youre headed through poway it would be a good place to stop.

We came here to Old Town Poway on weekday to get lunch for the first time after seeing that Poway had a BBQ restaurant. We got the 3x3 to sample everything but the ribs and amended it with an order of TV dinner ribs and bean crack and succotash sides. The bean crack is really good. I really loved the ribs, no BBQ sauce required, it had just the right amount of smoke and meaty flavor. 👩‍🍳😘. The smoked chicken was pretty tasty and the other two items pulled pork and brisket paired well with the BBQ sauce. I found out that they have another location in Miramar so I will check that out next time.

I feel like Ive reviewed Smokin Js before. I honestly dont know what to say other than everything here is good. Literally everything. My favorite is the brisket so I usually get the Smokin Js, which I believe is the brisket sandwich, or my most recent love, the loaded fries. You can put whatever meat you want on there so of course I get the brisket. These fries are no joke either. Theyre very good fries. The pork belly that you can find on the sides menu, I think, is just utter bliss. Look, it sounds like I dont know the menu, but I feel like I have an aneurysm trying to make a choice every time I come here because theres really no bad choice. Everything kinda just blends together so forgive me if I sound like a lunatic, but honestly, youll understand when you eat here. Youll die happy, I promise.

The food is fantastic. We got the pulled pork, pork belly, mac n cheese, and Cajun fries. All incredibly flavorful, smoky, and rich. Only issue we had was that the restaurant was out of almost everything. Including the chicken! My wife and I wanted to order ribs but they ran out literally right as we got to the register. It wasnt even late either. Bummer. But I digress, this is a fantastic bbq joint thats worth every penny.

Its been a while since I last reviewed a restaurant. After hearing about Smokin Js BBQ and saw their menu, well, it was immediately our choice for dinner. Weve been to 8 other BBQ restaurants in San Diego Country. Its easy to rate Smokin Js as the #1 BBQ in San Diego County. No pictures you say. Yes, everything was gone before I could take any pics.We ordered 1lb Brisket, 1lb Pulled Pork, 1 lb Burnt Ends, 8oz Slaw, 8oz Mac n Cheese, and 8oz Crack Beans. The smoke didnt over power the meat (unlike another famous BBQ in SD). All the meat was so juicy and fell apart with just a fork. Oh, and BBQ sauce...must be homemade. So different than any others. The sauce was a little sweet, a little tangy, and just a slight hint of heat. Really the best sauce period.Now for the sides. Everything looked and tasted like it was homemade by someones grandmother. You know if it tastes like your grandmother made, then its top notch. Its difficult to say which side was my favorite. If someone twisted my arm and made me choose. I would put the Crack Beans as #1. But, they were all equally good.Next time, Im definitely trying what sounds like a BBQ Burrito. I love the BBQ Burritos that the BBQ House in OB. If Smokin Js can nail that one, then no one can come close to this BBQ restaurant.Smokin Js in Poway is in a perfect area. Beautiful and almost feels like your at your neighbors or a friends house to eat. The next time BBQ is calling your name...make sure to try Smokin Js. It will not disappoint you.

I tried this through Uber eats. I got brisket, Mac n cheese balls and bread pudding. I love brisket and I just moved here, but... MSG in Brisket? How do I know. Migraine as soon as I had my third piece of brisket. Also way to salty to be salt.Anyone allergic to MSG stay away.

Definitively absolutely 5 star BBQ in SoCal. If you are looking for a gluten free option to call your new favorite place, then this is definitely going to be your new place to go. Great options, the burnt ends and even the chicken has amazing flavors! Customer service from Dario and everyone in the staff is superb and always great every time. When you meet Dario, you will love his attention to details and suggestions are always on point. The place is great for a pleasant conversation with friends and family, cozy and nicely decorated patio, great overall dining experience.

Definitely a top five barbecue restaurant in San diego. They smoke their meat the right way, they dont just add on barbecue sauce like other places. This is the best brisket Ive had outside of texas. The beans are also darn good. Cant wait to go back and try some of the other meats.

My husband and I visited this spot while on vacation from Houston, TX. We can honestly can say that this was some of the best BBQ that we have ever had. The chicken was well seasoned and juicy. The pull pork, and brisket and tacos were all delicious. The cajun fries are a must try. We enjoyed the sides of mac and cheese and Potato salad as well. 10/10 for sure! Solid BBQ in Poway right next to the Old Poway Park and the Poway Midland Railroad. Standouts were the brisket, ribs, and macaroni and cheese. Since its close to the park, parking is plentiful especially in the evening.

I was just in this location because it was recommended that this was a fire place must eat. After entering the shop, I was trying to get the 3X3. Willing to pay extra to modify my order. The young lady was extremely rude. No substitutions at all. This was extremely disappointing and upsetting. Since I had lost time to drive to this location I was forced to order. No military discount. They advertised that they give a discount when paying with cash, that was not given. The cashier made me feel unwelcome and as mentioned before. Not friendly at all. When I try to get the 3X3 with what was offered. I then ask if I could substitute the sides. I understand that a sub charge may be applied. But she was not willing to work with me. Not compensate for the the mishaps. I will not be returning this spot. We were trying this spot so our company can get catering, Now I not allow my company to do business with this local own bbq shop.

As theyve continually disappointed me from each of my past few visits, sadly, I finally have to be honest and bring Smokin Js down from a 5 stars rating down to a 3.Smokin Js BBQ was fantastic before they downgraded their menu. Today, they are inflexible as far as making any deviation from their listed menu. Which leaves you no other choice than ordering ala carte. Which will cost you triple.The Mac n Cheese which was once one of my favorites, as well as the other sides have all become mediocre. I dont care for the coleslaw!There are no more baby back ribs at Smokin Js They call them St. Louis style ribs now. They are not baby back ribs.The chicken I just received was extremely over cooked and dry. Despite all of the claims from JS on YouTube that the smoker saves the dried up chicken for himself. Its NOT TRUE! Dont believe it! All the BBQ sauce in the world cant make up for that dryness. Dont order chicken.For 6+ years it was a very satisfying experience. Not anymore. They are actually very rude, arrogant and unfriendly. They think that because they are the only game in town that they can get away with it. But their food is overpriced and going downhill just like their service.Now theyve artsmarted themselves. Instead of sticking to what made them successful in the Poway market in the first place, now they are being creative. Changing everthing. From simple to complicated. After all, they know better than us as to what Poways want. RIGHT?A problem weve always had with Smokin Js is their small portions. Check the meat weight out for yourself when you get your order.Smokin Js serves the worst breakfasts in Poway. Why would you go to a BBQ smokehouse for breakfast in the first place? There are many many better choices in Poway for breakfast and much better value than Smokin Js. There is only uncomfortable outdoor seating available to enjoy your disappointing investment there.The chicken fried brisket, (whatever it is, is to be avoided) its disgusting! And all of the other likewise disappointing breakfast burritos are all not just overly priced, but they are all worthy to be ignored as well.I encourage you to avoid those thems. Unluss you want to collect botulism. They love to undercook and serve raw eggs in their burritos at Smokin Js. Which leads to...what?Hopefully with the growth in Poway it will bring in some authentic alternatives to these spongers at Smokin Js who claim to be anthropologists. When in actuality (if you examine the history) they actually do nothing but sponge off of the local community, promote themselves, and pass the costs of their righteousness on to you the customer.Please, will someone bring in some real smoke house BBQ to Poway? Its long overdue. Im sure that that day is coming.Why would you expect to get quality BBQ from a place thats going to serve your food on plastic plates with plastic eating utensils.? They will charge you extra for napkins.

When I pulled up to park there was a line probably about 12 to 15 people deep. I was bummed when I got up to the counter because I was to late for the half or full smoked bbq chicken. Thats ok Ill be sure to come back for it because the sandwiches were great!! We got both the classic and the smokin J. The classic was pulled pork and the smokin was a beautifully done brisket.This place was GREAT!! By far the best bbq in North County inland San Diego. Brisket, pulled pork, ribs and pork belly are always perfect. Never dried out. Nothing is overly sauced, and the brisket chili is amazing.

Mind blowing! We ordered the brisket, baby back ribs, crack beans, coleslaw and pecan pie. This was definitely in the top 3 BBQ meals I’ve ever eaten. The ribs were absolutely perfect. The brisket was like butter. The beans were aptly named and the pecan pie was the best I’ve had.

Way too expensive I got 1 lb of brisket and it was hardly nothing and then I asked if I could buy a whole brisket and the guy said that you would charge me every single we got the platter and it only came with like three strands of brisket not enough for the prize we paid 89 dollars brisket had mostly fat but the ribs were good just lower the prize or give more brisket

I wish this place was closer to my house!! We pre-ordered food for my mothers day and it was amazing. I love the quick and friendly service. But seriously the food is always top notch. I have some dietary restrictions and they list all of that info on the menu right where you are ordering. It makes it so easy and Im glad I can trust what Im eating.

I found this place online and thought to try it out. Im always looking for some deep, smokey flavor food every time I travel. I tried the smoked chicken, pulled pork, St. Louie spare ribs, and the brisket. As well as the slaw and bean crack. I came with my son, whos from the area. We both agree that the brisket was really good, and thats about all. I travel to Texas and love the deep, smokey flavor food. Would I come back, definitely for the brisket, and to try the brunt ends and the bread pudding. The next time Im in town to visit my son again.

Their service has been deteriorating significantly during the recent past. For example, in the last couple of weeks, I placed online orders a few hours ahead of the pickup time. When I arrived there, the following happened:- The order wasnt ready and I waited 20-30 minutes in the store, each time.- Each time, they had run out of ribs (even though I placed my order well ahead of time). They replaced ribs with pulled pork. But then I realized that despite pull pork being cheaper than the ribs, they never reimbursed the difference back.I used to like this place a lot, and stopped by at least once a week. Theyre clearly quite overwhelmed these days which is a pity because, at the end, it affects customers.

Best bbq and chili in town. Quaint little shop at the heart of the historic landmark here in Poway. We got a smoked turkey for Thanksgiving this year, fed about 12 people with NO leftovers. The turkey had that smoked flavor all the way through the meat, and it was still so juicy! Recently my sister and husband came from out of town and I wanted to have them experience their food.As usual we buy a large amount of food. I wanted some burnt-ends as well but theyre extremely popular and I seem to miss them by the time I arrive there after work. We took everything home.Needless to say the experience was wonderful. Everyone remarked about how tender and flavorful the meat was. We were so stuffed that evening, and we got up the next morning and had some more for breakfast along with eggs and hot coffee. My experience is that its better than next day. When they left I sent the rest of it with them and they were glad to have it.The quality of the food is without question the best Ive had. The staff is friendly and the service is beyond reproach. They always know that when I come Im taking home a lot of food.I usually take a lot of pictures of the food, but unfortunately this time we were too busy eating it. My husband and I moved from Nashville, TN to San Diego about 5 years ago and we have been unsure about trying the BBQ out here. However, today we had some of the best BBQ at Smokin Js! The meat here is incredibly good. Servers were polite and fast, and takeout was fairly quick. I would definitely recommend the brisket, the burnt ends, the baby back ribs, menage a hog. I definitely like their burritos, and prefer to eat their cajun fries in a burrito rather than alone. Order extra sauce on the side if you like tangy BBQ, but honestly, the meat here is so good you dont really need it. Also parking is a bit limited if you try to park on the street.

I absolutely love this place! I first became acquainted with them when they did a burger night at Mission Cellars Winery next door. Food is AMAZING! Joshua (one of the owners) is absolutely amazing. My fiancé and I had Smokin J’s cater our engagement party and all of guests said how amazing the BBQ was. Joshua was able to help us figure out how much food we needed, and worked with us to switch out a few items for things we really liked. The packaging was great when we picked up the food, the pecan pie is TO DIE FOR. The pulled pork, mamas chicken, ribs and potato salad were hits. I’d highly recommend for dinners or catering!

Discovered this little gem in the great Old Poway area. I consider myself a pretty big BBQ fan, having been to places all over, and the brisket at this place is certainly one of the best in San Diego. Moist and tasty alone or with the delicious BBQ sauce. This place is TINY with maybe a dozen tables outside, and if its hot and sunny you may be in the sun unless you can snag one of the shady tables, but dont let that stop you from coming by. I used to frequent Smokin Js BBQ often when I lived in CA. It was hands down the BEST BBQ in CA! People rave about another larger one in San Diego and it is meh compared to Smokin Js. I moved to Alabama and immediately searched for a great BBQ spot since that is big here. I still have not found one that compares to Smokin Js. Keep it up!

The menu I looked at had two pork belly strips in the picture, so that seemed a little deceiving that for the quantity you would need to order two (about 5$ each) to feed two people. We were unpleasantly surprised at the portion sizes. The food overall tasted great, but was pricy for what we received. Not sure if we will buy from here again.

Being from the south Im very hard on BBQ restaurants but this place is everything I want in a BBQ joint. Its small and family owned and they care about their meats and their customers. I tried Smokin Js for the first time today. Ordered online for pick up and got the 3x3, a side of Mac and slice of pecan pie. I wanted to try everything. I really appreciated my meal wasnt just sitting there turning cold when I walked in. I had to wait 5 mins but was def worth it. It was fresh and hot. This was by far THE BEST most tender tri tip I have EVER had...thats including my bbq trips to St. Louis, Texas and ATL! It was literally falling apart. So flavorful. I didnt even need the sauce. Pulled pork isnt my fav but it was very tender and a hug portion. The sides were great. Potato salad reminded me of backyard bbq in S.Central L.A with a hint of dill (I believe). The slaw was perfect, not too much mayo. The Beans! Had so much flavor I will for sure be coming back for more. Oh and the pi! It was a small slice but had huge pecans on top: not those measley Lil chopped pecans. Its a tad sweet but thats expected with pecan pie. I thoroughly enjoyed myself

This was my first time at smokin Js. My coworker rave about this place, so i ordered a slice of pork belly, mac and cheese of course and surprisingly they had collard greens, rounding out my order with some burnt ends. The pork belly was bomb, mac and cheese was a lil dry for my liking and the collar greens needed a lil bit more cooking. Now about the burnt ends, seriously was disappointed when bbq joint cubes up some brisket and wants to call it burnt ends. Burnt ends are just that, the edges of the brisket which tend to be a lil crispy and somewhat burnt, hence the name, not cut and cubed.

I say this just to make it clear this review isnt skewed by this restaurant being 2 miles from my house.Smokin Js is maybe the best BBQ Ive ever eaten. Bought the Burnt Ends, Brisket, Pulled Pork and Ribs, along with the Cajun Fries, Cracked Beans, Cole Slaw and Mac and cheese.All the sides were fine compliments to the meat; none of them were especially special, but they were freshly made and tasty (which is unusual. Most sides are either canned, nasty or boring).Its the meat thats something special, and actually something rare. The meats are so good and so well prepared I was stunned. The brisket was full flavored and so tender you could cut it with a fork. The pulled pork; cooked to perfection; not greasy or dry. The ribs were excellent, although on the small side, but meaty and not overcooked like most places, and the burnt ends are by far the best Ive ever tasted. It actually put all the burnt ends I ever ate anywhere else in the country to shame (and thats a lot of burnt ends).The sauce was sweet with a nice tang, but I barely used it; didnt want it to take away from the taste of the meat.Like all BBQ joints its not a cheap meal, but thats okay. BBQ is supposed to be a treat, not a bargain. I dont know how long this place will be able to keep this level of quality up, or how long theyd be willing to stay in this tiny corner of Poway, but if youre bringing friends or family into town and want to show off, bring your wallet and bring them here.
