Great value for great food! We ordered a 2 and 3 combo meal with 2 karaage, 2 rolls, and vegetable tempura and we had plenty of leftovers with just 2 ppl eating! I recommend their karaage, sesame chicken, and the Philly roll! The owners are very friendly and we thought the food was delicious! I used to go here as a kid, 20 years ago, so I’m glad to see Rice Things is still around

Great little place, guys there are friendly and welcoming, wings were delicious, rolls also were good just wish portions were a tad bit bigger my only suggestion the rolls with the jalapeno is if the jalapeno were slightly roasted just to soften then up then put on top of the roll that would be a game changer🤤🤤🤤🤤 but over all place is a repeat 👍 for us.

Good haunt for quick Japanese food. Good menu and selection. Been going here for nearly 20 years. Theyve changed owners but the new ones preserved the rice things I grew up with.Great boxes and chicken katsu. Be sure to try everything because its all really good. Ill keep going back.

Our family has eaten here since the early 2000s and this was one of our go-to locations for cheap and delicious food. We haven’t been here since 2019 but it seems like the taste/texture has dropped :(Food/Taste/Flavor: 3/5 - we ordered 2 combo plate and a sushi roll. The pork and chicken katsu were pretty dry and the sauce was fairly salty. The vegetable tempura surprised me since it’s much more American ingredients than Japanese and included items such as carrots and green bean (imagine my shock and disappointment when I bit what I thought was a sweet potato…. but it was a carrot?!?! T_T). Recommendation to ask if you can get the sauce on the side for chicken teriyaki since it’s a bit sweet. The chicken karaage (fried chicken) was delicious and juicy when we first opened the box but became hard fairly quick as the food cooled. The salmon avocado roll was really good with lots of salmon! The South Bay Firecracker Roll had a nice kick but we probably wouldn’t get again since it really is just spicy tuna on a California roll with some spiciness on top. Theres not much alvocado in the either of the rolls and they were a bit wonky. Wasabi doesnt have any kick.Ambience: 3/5 - took the food to go. The restaurant only has 3-4 tables to eat at and one of the walls was just stacked with boxes. Looks like some remodel or design has changed in the past few yearsService: 5/5 - cashier was extremely friendly and let us take our time to make our order. Her quoted time of about 15 min was on point!Value for price: 4/5 - this place has increased in prices but it’s still very reasonable and one of the cheaper locations. Unfortunately, the quality/taste/texture has dropped

Update:When George owned rice things it was different. Just like when Sandy owned Rods .. it was different.. The boulevard has changed. Like so many of the Old trusted on Artesia, Merchants have sold out to substandard operations and owners... THIS IS ONE OF THEM.Be prepared for a substandard menu disguised as the old menu, and an extreme millennial staff were customer service is offered in Smiles NOT service. Smiles and excuses for slow kitchen staff is not cool. Waited 50 MINUTES for a simple 2 item combo!! This restaurant is so worried about Uber eats and grubhub order cancellations that any walk up orders are considered secondary...This is a horrible restaurant principle.Youre better off going somewhere else in this neighborhood... 11-26-21:Came here for my first time for takeout lunch. Love this place! Their chicken katsu with a side order of curry is bomb! The side of curry costs $2 and is enough to be shared with another person for it comes in one medium size bowl. Half of the bowl is able to cover the katsu pieces and also some of the rice. Very competitive prices as well for mix and match plates!

Very disappointing when I visited today . I used to come here alot . Quality has gone down, chicken was dry . And I felt very offended when I sat inside today. They have turned the Dining area into a storage room . That is not professional, dirty floors and walls, and distasteful. Im sure other arrangements could have been made to store inventory. Terrible customer service.So I came here wanting sushi and ordered the vegetable roll sushi combination. As I am currently expecting, I wanted to make sure that my order is fine ie no raw sprouts or anything like that. The guy behind the cashier is absolutely clueless and directed my question to who seems to be the boss lady, and she has the worst attitude ever. Her response was “it’s all vegetables” in a condescending manner even though I politely explained that I’m currently pregnant and wanted to be sure about raw sprouts. She didn’t even listen to my response and literally walked away right after saying that. I tried to explain again to her and she just looked briefly at me and you can tell that she has no interest in engaging with me.I understand that this is a no-frills casual sushi joint but that is not how you treat your customers. On hindsight, I probably should have just left instead of staying here for lunch.My last time eating here. As a customer, I don’t need to be treated like this.The additional star is for the food.

A neighborhood institution! I used to come here all the time in high school, and when I came back a month ago they still had the tasty spicy teriyaki chicken, california rolls, and salad combo. They only had limited outdoor seating at the time, though that may have changed since then.

The food was mediocre, chicken had somewhat of a weird taste. There is like storage in the seating area. Such a weird vibe, so sad to come back here and see how it’s now gone to s…Also came here with 3 people and myself total of 4 plates and when I asked for hot sauce the lady gave me 2 packets and said anything more is extra. Thought that was kinda silly.

The good and old Rice Things is gone. The dining area became a deposit filled with boxes and containers. Only four tables available. No more plates, only paper containers even if you are dining in. Sauces being put inside the food container. I guess its not as clean as before as well. People are friendly but the food quality dropped. Unfortunately they took a great restaurant and turned it into a deposit that sells food.

06/23 Update, can’t believe it, but it’s worse now and more expensive. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Seaweed was stale, overall portions of food was smaller. This ends my eating here and I don’t recommend it now.Food quality is not as good as the prior owner. They also have tried to “new and improved” some things that did not need any updates or improvements. It is like there’s trying to save a nickel and costing themselves their customer base. I used to love this place but I’m just not into it anymore, which is a total shame because I loved going there at least a few times a week, now I hardly go at all.

I called in an order for 12 people about an hour and a 1/2 ahead of time. When I showed up they were just finishing packing up the order 10 minutes ahead of schedule and all the orders were perfect. They even helped me carry it to my car. Great service and great food.

I am disheartened to edit my previous review. Rice Things was an amazing restaurant Ive visited frequently over the past 10+ yrs, however, with the recent changes of ownership none of the updates I see as positive. Like other reviews have said, the family vibe and personality is gone from the restaurant. It is intensely whitewashed, much fewer options, a bit more expensive, and as mentioned.. overall vibe is not warm anymore. Much of the food is the same, but the entire experience is gravely lacking. I went there to feel a bit of culture, and now it just feels like Im at an uninteresting pop up fusion restaurant. My Hope is that these reviews are read and put into consideration. We loyal locals do not want to discontinue our patronage. We love your family.

This place used to be my favorite restaurant. Massive portions of food for a great price and food that was authentic. After the parents left, the place is unrecognizable. They cashed out on fancy registers just to give small portions of food that don’t taste as good. They also no longer serve the same menu. They replaced udon and actual Japanese foods with whitewashed versions and tried to make the place look modern with a coat of white paint. There’s no personality left in the place and no longer feels like an authentic family run business. They’re just cutting corners on their food, the restaurant, and the service. Can’t imagine how many loyal customers they’re losing. I feel bad for the parents who worked so hard to become successful and for it to be ruined the minute they retire

I have eaten here for years so I remember when the food was better. I have had my share of hair and other non food items in my meal, but I just put them aside as expected things until yesterday. A lady came in with bugs fried into her spring roll. They were obvious even to me eight feet away, but the owner grabbed the roll from the lady and tried to scrape them off onto the floor but the lady wasn’t having it. She wanted a refund, but the owner told her to soak herself, “those bugs didn’t come from here”. They were fried into the roll! I have had all I can take of this place. I’ve let things slide for convenience sake but that is just too much. I knew the food quality was going down but didn’t realize just how far down until now. I hope the health department does an inspection on this place and gets it back up to standards required here. I don’t like the idea that I’ve been eating bugs but it’s obvious I have and so have you if you’re eating here.

One of my favorite Japanese spots in the south bay. They just have great quality food for the prices. You cant beat that. The only thing is the shopping center that theyre in can have limited parking but I never seem to struggle to find parking.I always order the two item plate. Comes with your choice items (plenty to choose from.) On my last visit, I tried some sushi and it was pretty good; fresh and tasty. The staff is always so helpful and friendly. I got introduced to this restaurant about 2 years ago and I gotta say I loved the food and quality of it.. I would always call to pick up and it was a quick and good service. But as of today I will never ever be eating here again. I promise that I love this place but today as I opened my pickup order food I got home and opened the bag just to see a full grown roach crawling out of my plate, the plastic bag was tied on the food since the minute that I picked it up from the restaurant so I know for a fact the roach got inside at the restaurant. No frills Japanese food, I love this place! Its a great value - lots of options, very cheap, and everything is available for take out or sit down. Theyre usual busy, so if you want take out its a good idea to call ahead. The staff is awesome, Ive never had an issue with anyone there. Parking in the attached lot can be tough if its busy, but theres always room on the side road.

They should bring their mother and father back out of retirement.I have ate lunch here at lease once a week for the last 2 years.They closed for 2 weeks for there kids to upgrade an run the businessAnd the kids made changes. I’m not positive but I think i paid more than normal.They raised the prices, for cutting corners. They changed the salad that looked likeI was eating weeds and changed the salad dressing that taste like chalk.Utensils and glasses all changed to plastic.There kids ruined one of my favorite places to eat, not sure I will go back.

I cant believe my meal was only 7 dollars and I was full after eating only half of it.I enjoyed the ginger chicken plate which came with rice, salad and delicious miso soup. This place is awesome... Sadly, we had to move away from the Southbay and this restaurant is easily the place we miss the most. Food is great, prices are great, owned and operated by a super nice family. Anytime we go back to Torrance to visit family we always stop here to eat. The only thing I can suggest is that they may need to consider expanding their location, because they can get super busy and packed during peak hours. However, the food is that good so its worth the wait..

What should have been a reasonably priced better than average quick bite became 20 minutes of watching 7 customers arrive after us yet get their food before us. When we inquired about our food, we got an annoyed look, no explanation or apology but an it will be out in a few minutes. We will never return and I hope this review costs them at least the $20 we wasted on a truly poor dining experience. Find the nearest Flame Broiler, Panda Express, or supermarket sushi instead and youll be better off.

I’m really sad this place changed ownership, it used to be one of my favorite places in the South Bay. I loved the Sushi Nigiri combos and the atmosphere, I was surprised to see the menu changes and prices rise. I decided to give it a chance and got a spicy tuna sushi bowl, it was completely sad and flavorless. It was just rice with a layer of tasteless tuna with a bit of ginger and wasabi, I had to bathe it in soy sauce to add any flavor at all. So disappointed I had to pay for such a sad meal. I will definitely not be coming back.

This place is good food relative to price depending on what you purchase. You can get a 3 item combo for under $10, which includes California and avocado rolls cut, plus a solid portion of chicken katsu with rice and salad. I think thats a great price with even a California roll in a supermarket thats nasty for $8.50 these days. Definitely worth checking out!

After reading reviews the LAWeekly and la.eater, I had to try, and was impressed.Tucked away in the corner of a small mini mall, the Japanese food (including sushi platters) is delicious and prepared fresh.Reasonable pricing, good portions, take-out is QUICK with a good number of cooks and servers.About a dozen tables inside with two picnic-type tables outside; table service with both.Parking is in short supply, though I typically never have to circle the block more than twice. Im just impatient, I suppose.Well worth being here, and there is a good Middle Eastern grocery a few steps away to explore.

Update 10/8/19 place has either sold or changed Management. Looks to commercial now, menu has changed and/or reduced and price has gone up a little. My favorite Udon soup is gone, sushi rolls up from $4.50 to $6.00. I just dont like the feel of it anymore. Too bad, was a local gem for me for over 10 years. Doubt Ill be back in a very long time.

No big deal, but get there 30 minutes later, they tell me its 15 more minutes, in the end took one full hour from the time I called for 2 plates. But tonight the owner argued with me about a teriyaki bowl that had no sause. The rice was still white. I asked for sauce. He complained that is the way they make their bowl and I would have to pay extra, after he told me to bring it back in. Ive been getting bowls for years. Not worth the hassle. Too many mistakes. This quick-bite Japanese restaurant is good for, well, a quick bite. Youll be somewhat underwhelmed by the presentation and, for some items, the flavor, but the food is priced appropriately. Rice Things is a great place for a quick and delicious Japanese meal of delectable foods like vegetable tempura, all kinds of sushi, chicken teriyaki, veggie egg rolls, etc, all at reasonable prices. Its a short-order restaurant, where you place your order at the counter, but then, its brought to your table. Plates come with a nice green salad and white rice. Everything is tasty, plus most of it is very healthy.The only thing is...often, they bring the meals to each patron with time in-between - too much time! Last night, March 22, I ate there with my daughter, and my food came out very quickly. Luckily, I had ordered egg rolls (1 order = 3) along with the meal. Her meal didnt come out for a good 20 minutes after mine! In the looonnngg meanwhile, we shared the egg rolls, and she had a couple of my pieces of sushi. I hated to eat too much of mine, because like a lot of people, I like to eat the meal together. We noticed the same occurrence at several other tables.Thats the only thing Id change - I might call or e-mail them and put in a suggestion! If you dine alone, you wont have to worry about this. But when with someone - Id suggest you say, Can you please serve us together, even if one meal takes longer? - that way, maybe youll be more likely to be served at the same time. The food there is worth the effort!

I like rice things - its affordable and quick.I have to admit though, it is hit or miss. Somethings come in small portions for eating in while big portions for eating out. Other things that you think would be cheaper are more expensive while more expensive things are cheaper.The menu I pick from most is their 2 item or 3 item combo. Note that they do charge you extra (multiple tiers of pricing) but the food is cheap, quick, and good overall.

OMG, this place is my jam! Ive been coming here for about a decade-and-a-half and though there have been small changes, the things I love about this spot have stayed the same. The prices are affordable, the portions are pretty large, and the food is delicious!They serve Japanese comfort food: katsu, teriyaki, etc. But they also some finer items like fresh sushi and sashimi. This place is a standalone restaurant as far as Im aware and so its more of a local thing. That said, lunch and dinner rushes are a real thing. To the staffs credit, they do get people in and out very quickly during such times.Overall, this place is very high on my list of recommended eats, local or otherwise. Im a customer for life as long as they never change. :)

The combination plate - its $6 for enough food for 2 light meals (or 1 pretty big meal). Reasonably fresh, and not greasy. Some winners: sesame chicken, all the katsu meats, all the tempuras, all the sushi. Some ones to avoid: chicken teriyaki (lacks flavor), sweet egg omelet (not enough).All in all, for the price, its a darn good meal.

This is a Japanese-style takeout restaurant. There are some tables for eating there, but they seat at most 3 crowded people. I like to come here when i want to eat a bit healthy. If you go at lunch time you may need to wait for a table or sit outside (a few round picnic tables). Most dishes are pretty tasty. The quantities are good, and you can get 1, 2, or 3-item combos. They have decent sushi rolls for a takeout place, nothing fancy. I like to get the teriyaki salmon and teriyaki vegetables with a spicy tuna roll. They serve enough for me to take some home after. The chicken katsu is also very tasty. Prices are not exactly cheap, but reasonable for what you get. The dishes I didnt enjoy were the Hawaiian chicken (just strange), and the Fried Chicken - its kind of like karage-style nuggets, but it was way too dry for me.
