Quick service for a quick dinner that we preferred out. I had the beef chimichanga and my spouse had a chicken burrito. Both meats a bit over cooked and soft. Sauces were delicious as were the rice and beans. The only thing keeping this place for five stars is the meat quality. Decently priced drinks!

Cozy place with plenty room for 1 to ???. Service was wonderful. Seated upon arrival. Drinks served quickly. Waitress and manager responded to our needs. Im currently on a low carb diet so asked for a salad substitute instead of a side of beans. Waitress said no problem. Our food was delivered promptly and was very good. This place is very old and in need of a remodel. But was clean as well as the restrooms. We enjoyed our meal very much and the wonderful service.

Our first time visiting and the food was perfect and authentic. The plates are big and the drinks on point. We each got margaritas, bellys full, service consistent, warm and friendly. The atmosphere was very hometown. Well definitely visit again soon!

I really enjoyed my visit here two times I felt like I was in rosarito and some old Mexican restaurant with the smell of corn tortillas and trinkets and paintings right out of Baja. They have a bar upstairs nice and private and quiet and upstairs seating and downstairs seating the staff is very friendly extremely attentive and the prices are great the food is excellent they have a lunch special.

First time to visit with friends who have been there before. Our server was busy as she had to take care of some curb side orders as well. Food was excellent. I had a chicken burrito that had plenty of chicken. My wife had shrimp tacos and our friends had burritos as well. Very authentic. Good time with reasonable prices.

I came from San Jose, CA, I’m a vegetarian and I really like this place has a separate menu for vegetarian people,. I really like that concept, and another thing is The food is delicious and I had a the best tamales ever I had in my life, Maria was great and I had a good conversation with her, I came to know that this is family owned business from 30 years and that tamales was her mom’s recipe. Thank you Maria for welcoming me and treating me well, and also thank you for letting me to have a pic with you☺️, I highly recommend this place, people are so nice, Food is delicious, nice environment. when I come to Desert hot springs in future, I’ll definitely visit this place and will definitely meet Maria.

Friendly staff, good food and convenient location but the atmosphere? Nada! It could be a great cozy place if the owners would make a few improvements. First is the lighting - very bright spotlights in the chandelier-style lamps glare over diners, while many boxes of beer piled next to several tables give the impression of eating in a warehouse. Most annoying was the rear section where we were first seated that reeked of bleach. Last but not least, how about removing the Christmas decorations (we were there in mid-March)?

I cannot speak on the food. I am only speaking on my initial gut feeling when I walked in today. It is beyond dark and seemingly dirty here. As soon as I walked in it smelled like dirty dish water or like dirty rag. It was so unpleasant I convinced my husband to leave before we were seated. Im really sorry I have to leave a review in hopes someone that works there will pass the message along. Ive seen great reviews and heard from one of my customers how its the best in DHS. I really wanted to try it out because casablanca has repeatedly let me down. I will stop by another time. today just threw me off.

I have wanted to try this place for a few years but every time I wanted to go it was closed (Sundays). Tonight we went and I have to say...its my new favorite Mexican restaurant in DHS. The food all tasted like it was made from scratch. The salas were fresh and delicious. The nachos were a sloppy mess...like I love them. The carnitas were quite tasty and the Chili Colorado Chimichanga was amazing. Jose Luis was an outstanding server and extremely pleasant.

My sister was going to diner and asked if I wanted her to get something for me. I said yes and then called the restaurant to ask the cost of the appetizer. A couple hours later south of the border called me to ask if I had just left their restaurant. I said no but my sister just left the restaurant and they told me she forgot her take out order! We arrived and there were only 4 other tables yet the service was still slow. The salsa wasnt anything special. I ordered fish tacos and it was just a salty piece of fish on a tortilla. It had sides but no white sauce or cabbage which makes a fish taco.. my aunt ordered a shrimp cocktail and got shrimp civeche instead. Id never go back.

Good food and cold beer. We came here for dinner. I had the Taco combo meal with ground beef which was good and served with a nice amount of tomatoes, lettuce and some shredded carrots. This restaurant has been here for many years, evidenced by the layout. We sat upstairs which was just a few steps up. Service was good. Would recommend you trying if you are in the area.

Authentic Mexican food restaurant with great service and cold beer. It wasnt as good this time as it was the first time we were here, maybe because we were here for dinner this time instead of lunch but good nonetheless. Still not discouraging as we stop here when were in town and will do so again. Chips and salsa are some of the best Ive ever had. Help is friendly and service is prompt! Excellent food and service. Very friendly staff. My husband has been getting take out for a few months and has gotten to know some of the servers. We had a surprise visit from some friends from out of town and we met them at South Of The Border. It was a wonderful experience and the food was excellent. We have been here several times with family and friends. Those who live in the area k ow this is the place to come for good food.We took 6 grandchildren here and the staff were so nice and helpful with them. The kids even got a free treat from the owner because they were so well behaved.I would have given them 5 stars, but I am handicapped and it has always been hard to get a chair since I cant slide into a boorh.

A friend and I drove in from LA to do some hiking the next day and we’re craving Mexican food. Saw this place had good reviews and decided to try it out! The restaurant had an authentic feel and great service (water glasses always full). Had a good dinner, and thought everything was good. Flash forward to later that night my stomach started acting up, was unable to sleep due to discomfort. The next day during our hike, both of us got violently ill, and our trip was ruined due to the food poisoning that we got from eating at this restaurant. So beware!

Went there today the Waitress and Staff are very rude! The lady who gave us our Menus just threw the Menus on the Table. What an attitude! I got a response from the owner asking me Who was my waitress. If you as the Owner do not know who is working at your establishment and if you have to ask me who my Waitress were then it is obvious you are not as involved in your establishment. As an owner you should know who is working for you at all times. The waitress never even gave me their names so how would I have known their names?

I have a gluten intolerance and they were able to accommodate and make sure their chips were safe. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. The salsa is amazing, so is the guacamole! Our soda never ran out and the atmosphere is mellow and nice. There was TV with sports and a bar in the other room. All the beans are vegetarian and the rice is not deep fried as is frequent in this part of town. There is a vegetarian white rice that is not cooked in chicken broth also. When you are this picky it is hard to find the right place but South of the border restaurant in Desert Hot Springs is the right place for us! We will be back.

I really like this place, but I will be honest... The decor is circa 1960s and not in a good way. The seats and benchs are hard and a touch uncomfortable. The drinks are sub- par and could stand to have a professional bartender make them. But other than that nothing bad can be said about the service. The wait staff try hard and are friendly. The food may not be winning awards these days, but it never fails to satisfy. Great food at an affordable price.

I have enjoyed dinner at this restaurant a couple of times when Im in town and I have enjoyed the food because I think is very good and the price very fair. One thing that is very important to me to continuing visiting moms and pops places is the customer services and this restaurant is serviced by owners, I love that because youre going to receive the best customer services available. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends and family and will definitely visit again when Im in town. I love it!

A great spot for dinner and drinks if youre in the area. Their rice and beans are my favorite, as is their table salsa--give me a giant mixing bowl of the rice and beans slathered with cheese and salsa and Id be a happy camper! Cheese enchiladas are also very good. Tacos/taquitos are OK. Ive never had their burritos. Also lots of space for larger parties if you have a lot of people with you--just make sure you call ahead to reserve with a larger party and theyll happily accommodate.

This is a little hidden gem my boyfriend and I discovered while on our way back to Yucca Valley. Im picky about my Mexican food I come from Los Angeles which has many great Mexican restaurants, I found the food authentic and delicious, the drinks are poured strong and they were awesome. The staff is always friendly everytime we go in there, food comes out pretty fast most the time. Dont let the decor and the outside fool ya. You wont be disappointed

South of the Border is a traditional Mexican Restaurant. I dont know exactly when this business came into DHS, but I have been in the Coachella Valley a long time....and they were already here. Has to say something about the business. The atmosphere is right, the Servers are attentive and nice. The beer is cold and the food is great. I had a hard shell Beef Taco and Chile Relleno that were very tasty. The refried beans are the real deal. Very nice experience.

We both became violently ill the next morning and the only thing we had eaten was from this restaurant. Well they did have a lot to choose from but the food was average no wow! they did not have cheese dip, found that odd! I did not care for the inside..it did not have any windows in the seating area and the decor was to cluttered..also when you sat at your table you were just looking at a dirty wall b/c the paintings are hung to high. The service was good and we did not wait long for our food. There is a lot of competition w/ Mexican restaurants so I will just keep trying them all until I find one that stands out..sorry to say it wasnt this one.

The place is located up the road from the main shopping area, which makes it an ideal place to eat if you dont want to wait. Staff was extra attentive and complements to the chef/cooks for the delicious meals. The decor did give a feel of Mexican-Authenticity. A little small but thats what gives it a cozy, at-home feeling. This was the worst mexican food Ive eaten, my boyfriend and I got the south of the border burrito we had wanted it ChimiChunga style, I told he waitress with grilled chicken and grilled beef. I gone to Rocky Point Mexico for over 35 years and Arizona has a ton of Mexican Resturants, I know what good, great and excellent Mexican food is. Waitress comes out with an unfried burrito and she argues that we never said we wanted ChimiChungas, that was not true and she took it back with a slight attitude. ChimiChungas came I are a forth before my stomach started hurting, I knew Id had bad pork, the meat wasnt grilled and the so called chicken(pork) wasnt grilled it was cool in a garlicky sauce cause it tasted like garlicky pork. My boyfriend had two bites and was disgusted at the taste of the burrito. We were starving and hadnt eat but to small baskets of chips. The Manager was Rude And Argued with my boyfriend about the ChimiChungas and because we mostly me are the chips he said your paying. Now Id be outside trying not to be sick and was half the next day spent in the bathroom. The few times that we have had a problem with the meal the managers would correct it or not charge is. Unbelievably The Worst Mexican Restaurant, Worst Waitress, Worst Food. Boyfriend went and got a grilled Chicken burrito from Del Taco and said how delicious it was I couldnt eat. The key to finding a really good Mexican food place is ask or by how many Mexicans are eating there.
