After a long hike around the world. We decided to come here for lunch. For appetizers we had the lobster roll, lettuce wraps and dumplings. All were excellent. For lunch I had the Chilean sea bass. It was really good and juicy. The curry sauce was exceptional. Service was good, we will definitely be back.

Theres a reason this place is so highly rated. Its always busy-packed, especially for happy hour. Is it the most authentic East Asian/South East Asian food available in Orange County? Maybe not but thats not what people are here for.The atmosphere here has a cool vibe though it does get fairly loud so bear that in mind if you have issues hearing in loud spaces. Our server was very nice and made sure we had everything we ordered and our waters were full multiple times. Every sushi roll Ive had here is great and the Spice ahi roll was no exception. High quality tuna and good flavor. The lobster spring roll, OG Vietnamese roll, and pan-fried dumplings were all fantastic. I thought the sauce that comes with the OG Vietnamese roll really levelled it up.My favorite main here is the seafood curry with coconut rice. The Szechuan prawns were great quality prawns though the sauce didnt do much for me. The spicy Thai basic beef had a nice flavor and is consistently great every time Ive had it.

Went in on a recommendation, and were very happy we did! From the start, the staff were very friendly and personable. It was happy hour, so we sat outside and enjoyed the sunset. Our server (Micah) was great! We had some cocktails and small plates while reading over the rest of the menu. It was restaurant week, and they had a great offering in honor of that, so we went for it. The food was amazing! The portion size was great! We completely over ate and it was so worth it. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Laguna!Thank you Starfish for an overall great experience!

An incredible dinner! We were lucky enough to come during happy hour, so everything was reduced price. The cocktails were generous and strong. All the food surpassed expectations, especially the banh mi sliders and the chicken satay. I would love to come back here! I do want to note that it’s very dark and noisy inside the restaurant — we ate outside on the patio, which has heat lamps, and were much happier.

Fantastic atmosphere and the food was great. The Szechaun Scallops were top level and a lot of food. The crab slider were excellent. Dont miss out on the pineapple salsa with the Thai Coconut Chicken.

We love their happy hour. The appetizers are absolutely delicious and the signature mixed drinks are awesome. Service is very prompt and efficient. It gets crowded quickly so get there early or make a reservation to make sure you get a seat.

We just came back, this is our second time to this restaurant and brought 3 friends for their first experience. The downs were Flat Iron Steak Satays which has a funky flavor and salty ; the Korean tacos were overpowered with pickles so didnt get to enjoy the meat and its flavor. The highlights were wok fire Edamame; pork and chicken lettuce wraps but the pork was tastier; pork potstickers were ok; soft shell crab sliders/lobster rolls/spicy tuna rolls were excellent; the herb calamari was really good for the first order but average for the second order; wagu with black bean sause sliders were good; chocolate bread pudding was very good. The drink orders were consistently slow so make sure you place them as soon as possible... any way, we really enjoy the food in general, creative cocktails, services.

This is a fancy place that seems to cater to the locals. We were there in the middle of the week for lunch so the restaurant was relatively empty. Service was very prompt, professional, and friendly. The menu had many interesting options but portions were relatively small. Not a place to go in a budget but everything we tried was good.

UPDATE TO MY REVIEW from a ONE Star to a 5 FIVE Star:I was contacted by the manager about my review and was asked if I would be willing to experience in-person fining and see if they could make it up to me. I booked my reservation for 6 (friends joined us that had never been). Our most amazing waiter, Alexis (she is truly the best, we were told she no longer worked at Starfish) came to our table once we were seated (one point scored Starfish). Once we ordered food, Alexis double-checked the food ticket, double-checked food ingredients, and double-checked food once it came out!! Our night was perfect with amazing food that didnt make me sick, and I didnt have an allergic reaction to!! I would like to say that Starfish has redeemed themselves and has me as a customer once again!THANK YOU FOR CARING.This was a favorite place of mine, especially because they have always been so careful with food allergies. The last 3 times I have gone, Ive gotten sick. Everything was supposed to be gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free, but the garlic noodles had a garlic allergy alert versus a gluten allergy. This is the last time I visit them.

The food at Starfish is always impeccable. The quality of fish is superb and the flavors are fantastic. Every dish is paired with the perfect sauce. Even the cocktail list, although out of a few ingredients on our visit, is loaded with delicious options.The happy hour(opium hour) is the best deal in Laguna. In their normal hours is a good spot but during happy hour it’s the best value in Laguna Beach and extraordinarily delicious as always!But most of all, the thing that made our visit so spectacular, was our server Chris(and his back waiter). He is the definition of perfect hospitality. From recommending the perfect dishes to his friendly and attentive manor he made it a great experience all around. Even their neighbors across the street at the montage could learn a thing or two from his dialed in excellent service.

Delicious!! Went with a group, the ambiance was perfect for a Saturday evening, lively music, friendly wait staff. We sat inside. The decor is so chic and reminded me of something you would see in New York. We ordered several dishes and drinks. Everything we ordered was amazing. Amongst the group, there was not a single item that someone in the group didn’t care for. This is so rare. Absolutely recommend coming here and checking it out.

Starfish was an amazing experience with incredible food and drink. We had a party of nine adults and were seated on the patio. The staff was very friendly and we have the most amazing waitress named Celeste. She had an impeccable knowledge of the entire menu as well as a friendly and witty personality. When we asked about what to order she was able to rattle off an amazingly detailed top 10 of the different dishes based on different palettes and different preferences. It was very obvious that she knew her stuff and she was incredibly gracious and everything that she did for the table. The drinks were great and came out quickly and the food was amazing.

My husband & I ate lunch here for the 1st time on Saturday. The food was high quality and the service was great. The Pear Cheesecake was delicious, even though I don’t care for pears, they were just on top and my hubby ate them. Our server, Celeste was so helpful and suggested which sushi rolls had cooked fish and which didn’t. I was able to order the Pad Thai without it being super spicy, because she said she’d mention to the chef to go easy on the spice. The Sunset Roll & the Crab California Rolls were great and the Mongolian Beef was so tender. It was a great atmosphere and we will be going back. Will definitely ask for Celeste’s section if she’s working that day. This place really cares about the customers!

First time visiting Starfish during our yearly pilgrimage to Laguna. Wish we had come here years ago. There is something for everyone on the menu! The highlights were the Korean Tacos, Sichuan Japanese Eggplant, and Macadamia Encrusted Lobster roll. Marg was on point too! Prices are very reasonable as well. Was fortunate enough to grab reservations here for two and had a great date night with my wife. I enjoyed multiple dishes that were recommended by our waitress and had several delicious old fashions made by Nicole - who absolutely made some of the best oldfashions I’d ever had. We shared Wok fired mussels, the coconut rice, chili fire wontons and the flourless chocolate cake. The pictures will make you hungry- it tasted as good as it looked.

We made a reservation here for an early Mother’s Day dinner. They had a table ready with a high chair for us since we brought our 9-month-old. Disappointed that I had to rate it average at best. Service was attentive and I didn’t think the food was overpriced considering the area.However the food was a big big letdown. Heres the thing. This food is on par with the local clientele and area. Alot of older folks. Alot of 75k and up vehicles. We had a couple of people come to our table and rave about the food and asked us how we liked it (I assume they were regulars)The Pho. Bar none one of the worst ive had zero flavor. Not subtle but zero. The Satay was bland. No infusion of flavors coming together. My wife had the Pad Thai and tasted her chicken and it was bland. About the only thing she recommended was the Crab WontonsHeres rhe thing. We just ate at Las Brisas two days ago and that was the Mexican version of this restaurant. Menu items are intriguing but the dishes don’t tie down together and also whatever is put on it leaves the dishes wanting in the flavor and seasoning dept (more on them in another review)

Was recommended to me from a client. Ate here this past weekend and was not disappointed. Food was phenomenal. Hands down best sushi place in Orange County. They have a tv in the bar for football. So that was a bonus.Ordered the Fresh Crab California roll, the Sunset roll ahi which is hamachi & salmon sashimi over a fresh crab and avocado roll, sesame sauce, sweet soy and the Crispy Chicken Spring rolls to start. Let me begin this review with stating that I realize restaurants are suffering with low staff however waiting 40 minutes for potstickers I believe was a bit ridiculous. Luckily our sushi arrived about 10 minutes later. Food was just okay luckily we got happy hour prices otherwise I think it would have been overpriced for quality. I guess the one thing I really didnt like was the amount of sauce they put on the rolls. It was so strong mostly mustard based to the point you had to scrape it off. They use quality ingredients but for some reason think everyone needs sauce. Id rather see better cooking and natural flavors. Restaurant seating is way too cramped. I held a private dinner for 30 people at Starfish. Summing it up, if I could give more than 5 stars, I would. From advance planning with the Starfish team to the event itself, everything went so smoothly. The Buddha Room perfectly balanced being in an intimate space while maintaining the ambience of a beautiful restaurant. The food was outstanding. And in particular, the service was above and beyond. I want to specifically thank the team for ensuring that the vegetarian guests in my party were well taken care of beyond the menu we prepared. The most common guest reaction post event was that restaurant was amazing! All in all, we had a fantastic time and look forward to coming back. Thanks to the entire Starfish team!

Starfish is a diamond in the rough. Its next to a CVS so you wouldnt expect to find such a nice restaurant.They have happy hour every day from 3-6!! You cant beat the 50% off specials!!The food and drinks are incredible! The servers are attentive and knowledgeable. Third time not a charm. Figured out why last two times I felt extremely ill. They use lime juice and soy sauce with sodium benzoate, which I’m highly allergic to. It was served family style and the portion is large enough for two people, especially if you also order appetizers.We shared the Mahi-Mahi Hot Fish and it was wonderful. We had an awesome time, the staff was great, food was outstanding and drinks were fantastic (and strong). We started with a couple of rounds of dumplings, followed by a couple of sushi rolls and the main course were two fish. The first fish was mahi-mahi with a panang curry, if you like panang curry this fish is magical, one of the best Ive ever had. The second fish was the whole fresh fish which in our case was a 4 pound red snapper, the fish is fried and and served with the sauce on the side, get the green curry it is amazing! We capped off the night with a chocolate raspberry desert that was the perfect end to a wonderful meal. Thank you Starfish for wonderful evening!

Horrible service, we went for our wedding anniversary last week and waited 20 minutes at the table before someone came to take our drink order. We ordered and when our food came some food never showed up. When we asked about it they said they would bring it out …. they never did so when we got the check we asked to get it to go. I ate here on 10/12/‘22 with a friend.In general the presentation was excellent. We had the edamame to start, loved the flavor, my friend had the Chilean Sea Bass (more anon) and I had the black cod which was just delicious. However, I am writing to discuss the Chilean Sea Bass:Firstly, and most importantly, this is an EXTREMELY endangered fish and you should not be serving it all!! I’m sure you are well aware of this fact.Secondly, given that you are serving it, despite knowing full well (I’m certain) that it is endangered, you charged essentially the same price as other less endangered fish (the Black Cod I had cost $1 less), when you should be charging a MUCH HIGHER PRICE FOR IT. By doing so you are not giving the message to your clients that you appreciate how endangered and special it is! In fact, as I’m sure you’re aware, it is in peril of extinction! AND YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM!Thirdly, I tasted my friend’s serving of the Sea Bass and frankly not only did I find your sauce to be thick and smothering of the delicate and subtle flavor of the Sea Bass, but to add insult to injury, you proceeded to drown the flavor even further by adding way too much lemon grass to the sauce- to the point that one couldn’t even tell it was Sea Bass!Why bother to use the endangered Sea Bass at all when you drown it in thick sauce and over-flavor it with lemon grass?? The black cod would have done just as well with that sauce. If you insist on selling/serving the Sea Bass, don’t negate the fish’s own wonderful flavor with your sauce! What a waste!I used to eat Chilean Sea Bass when I lived in Chile some 20 yrs ago when it wasn’t so endangered, so I’m well aware of it’s delicate subtlety. And obviously I choose to no longer eat it

Usually when you see a restaurant with Pan Asian classics, it means all their dishes are mediocre. But this place is the excpetion. First, I need to say that the service and atmosphere were both great. I dont have a single complaint about the staff - everyone was very professional. But the food was terrible. For the prices, thats pretty inexcusable. I ordered the Mahi Mahi in pineapple curry, and chose the grilled option. For those that cook (like I do), you know its almost impossible to overcook fresh mahi mahi. But here at Starfish, the fish was overcooked and tasteless. And whatever the overly thick paste was, it certainly wasnt curry. Tasted like it came from a mix that they didnt prepare properly. It was as thick as peanut butter. Which is NOT how you want curry. The braised pork buns were also tasteless, and the spicy tuna roll was also bland. We hail from Washington DC with very good fresh fish places and sushi, so perhaps were spoiled. But dropping $250 (including tip) for food that was really not well prepared at all forces me to give this bad review. This was the kind of meal youd expect from a TGIF or Ruby Tuesday in an airport. If I paid those prices, I wouldnt complain. But it was expensive, and until they fix whatever is happening in that kitchen, I wont be back.

There were so many cocktails and small plates that I wanted to try, so well be back to try more! Its a beautiful restaurant with plenty of parking, which is rare in Laguna Beach! The food tasted great and the the menu was quite extensive with plenty of options, ranging from seafood, Chinese, Thai, and Sushi, but they were a little light on the vegan front.The patio has good heating and their Opium hour is pretty extensive to match the large menu. Asked for a gin gimlet in a martini glass with Hendricks. On top of the $13 drink, they charged +$4 for the Hendricks and +$2 for the martini glass “pour” - what a joke - also didn’t say anything, just showed up on the bill. The food was ok. Seafood was not seared before hand so it was all just pretty mushy, the pork buns had very little meat in them and way too much bbq sauce. We had a lobster roll, spicy ahi tuna roll and their version of a rainbow roll I cant recall the name of. The latter one was the best of the three, but neither one had impressed me. My fiancee and I went spontaneously to the beach for a hike and dinner. We were going to get mexican food but that restaurant was closing. Starfish was in the same parking lot so we went in there expecting the generic chinese food experience but it was a pleasant surprise, really well decorated! Romantic. On our recent trip to Southern California, my wife & I Googled for seafood in Laguna Beach and Starfish showed up. I am so glad, because this place is wonderful. Mouth watering Asian with super fresh ingredients and great seafood. Be certain to order the edamame appetizer because it is incredible.

I went here last min a few weeks ago. I was honestly very surprised at how everything tasted. I don’t typically like curry but it was sooo yummy here. My fav I tried that day was the curry and shrimp lettuce wrap. Staff was welcoming and they even have a happy hour menu. ;)

One of the best Asian restaurants around…we go here regularly because the food is so good. The ambiance is very nice too, if a bit noisy. Great sushi rolls, pho soup, fish and shellfish specialities, and I love their coconut rice. Their curries are absolutely delicious, but somewhat spicy so dont order them if you are spice-adverse. Best scallops with black bean sauce around!

I had high expectations of this place based on other reviews, but the food was bland and really lower than average. I had the Bangkok Spicy Udon and Kung Pao Chicken. Both dishes were bland and were having an identity crisis. It did not taste authentic at all. The chicken in the Bangkok Spicy Udon was dry and not flavorful. The Kungpao chicken had neither spice nor sweetness--just mushy chicken, mushy water chestnuts, Asian ingredients having an identity crisis. The pictures of the restaurant are very deceivingly good. Do not trust the photos! We had considered getting the Whole Fish at $59 and were so relieved that we did not do that. If youre Asian and prefer authentic Thai, stay away from here.

The food is delicious. The edamame, coconut rice and calamari are always a great starter. Mongolian beef, spicy thai beef and lettuce wraps are a few favorites. Great and quick service everytime. Very nice atmosphere as well.

The review is about the rolls. I seriously felt I was gonna get sick after eating there. I eat Asian every other day and I never thought I would ever dislike one before yesterday. The order was slightly mistaken (but thats ok), but the food really gave me a night of nightmares. The average person might like the place, but let me tell you better stay away.

We got sushi delivery from Starfish. The rolls portions are very small, and rolls themselves are mostly rice and almost no fish. Quite spicy too. The restaurant prices set at upscale level when quality is subpar.

First time here. Also may be a bit biased because I was with a great group of people. Food was great, service was great. We had reservation for 8 but ended up with 6. If I had to knock on anything, drinks and price (mainly due to personal taste).We ordered a lot of food, probably wont remember some. Calarmari, good. Thai fish (halibut?) with bamboo leaves, good. Thai beef, good but I would still suggest to skip. Bhan Mi sandwich, good. Thai fried rice, above average but skip. Lobster spring roll, good. Dumplings (pork?) good but skip. Lychee (martini?), good. Strawberry drink, ok and the group was not a fan. Happy hour red wines were decent. Korean taco, good. Lettuce wrap, ok but my group thought it was excellent.Happy hour definitely made it more worthwhile. Would come back and recommend.

One of the worst service experiences Ive encountered while eating out. I had never been to the restaurant, so I decided try it. It was 1PM on a Thursday and pretty slow, only about 4 tables in the restaurant and one other table sitting in the bar area that came in after me. I decided to eat in the bar area thinking it would be a little quicker to order and receive the food as I was really hungry. Right at first, I ordered the edamame and the Korean Galbi tacos to get started. After a half an hour, I asked the server if everything was going to come out at once since nothing had been delivered to the table. He said, no the first courses should be right out. After another 7 minutes the edamame arrives to the table. At that point, I asked if the Galbi tacos were still on their way. He said let me check on those for you. Apparently, he forgot to order them, so he said they would be out shortly and they were on him. So as I am receiving the tacos, about 50 minutes after ordering, the other bar table is finished and ready for the check. Then I ordered the Thai Curry Chicken, with grilled chicken breast, tomato, edamame, potato, panning curry sauce, as the main course (ordered the same time as the items to clarify) and this entree came 5 minutes after the first/appetizers were delivered giving me a plethora of food on the table instead of the courses being spaced out. The food was very tasty and appetizing. However the service deterred from the entire experience. The timing of the meal was absolutely inconsistent and frustrating. When I was finished, the server brought the bill over as he assumed I didnt want to order anything else to eat. When he delivered the check the tacos were still on the bill, which he said he would remove. I ordered dessert and waited another 15 minutes. All in all poor taste and service given the bill at $150

We had a party of 5. Everyone loved their entrées and appetizers. The lemon pepper scallops were cooked just right and the sauce was very good. My only disappointment was that, although TripAdvisor lists Japanese first in their description of the cuisine, there was only one dish that I would consider authentic Japanese - sashimi. However, the Starfish web site does not even list Japanese, so it seems to be a TripAdvisor mistake.
