Since COVID, I hadnt visited nor gotten delivery from here, but last week I ordered a delivery and was blown away by the incredible quality of every dish. The Tempura was truly superb, and the Salmon Teriyaki was perfection itself (including being perfectly cooked). Bravo! I cant wait to get more.

I love this place. Amazing quality and great price for the quality that you get. The spider rolls and the salmon lover are amazing, but I’ll definitely be coming back to try more of their stuff.

The sashimi here is among the best I have ever had. The staff is quick and knowledgeable and very friendly. They have a semi-traditional tatami room that seats around 6 comfortably with a dugout for stretching your legs. Make reservations early as they fill up fast.

Great little sushi place. Its a hidden gem. Ever since I stumbled upon this place, it has been my go to sushi joint. Ive eaten sushi all over the bay area. Only a handful of those I would rate it 5 stars. This is one of them in that area. If you are into just rolls like 95% of the people then everywhere is about the same. But if you enjoy nigiri, sashimi and traditional Japanese food then dont pass up on this place.

Quality sushi through and through! Sugata has a cozy and elegant atmosphere, and the staff are always welcoming and attentive. The menu has a great selection of traditional and unique sushi rolls, as well as a variety of other dishes. My go to is the 49ers roll - I only wish the team were as good as this particular dish.

Sugata changed owners years ago and I stopped going. Recently Ive given it a couple tries and its been great. The sugata bento is a great deal for $33. Theres enough to feed two people. The nigiri with the bento excellent as was the dragon roll and california roll. Im looking forward to going back.

Wow... Ordered food from them for the first time on Uber Eats, and the food is just incredible! The plating, even though it’s just a takeout, looks amazing and the food is so fresh and delicious. So glad to have them serving even during Covid-times. Thank you!! ☺️

I ordered agedashi tofu and it was gross. Instead of being crispy and fried it was gooey like jelly. I complained about it and they said it is supposed to be like that. They were reluctant to make another one or correct it. Not great customer service. I’d stay away from that dish or anything fried there. The sushi was okay.

Easily the best sushi in East Bay and beats out so many sushi spots in SF. Ill break it down between food, ambiance, and service.FOOD - For me, a tell-tale sign of a sushi restaurant with good food is the preparation that goes into every ingredient, and especially into the little things all the way down to the grains of rice. Yes, the rice! I have been to too many high quality and high end sushi restaurants that dont properly prepare their rice. At these other places, the rice in my nigiri is often cold, dry, or simply doesnt have the right balance of vinegar, sugar, salt, etc. Sugata truly knows how to prep their ingredients and considering the care that goes into the rice, you can imagine the effort that goes into preparing their proteins.AMBIANCE - This restaurant is cozy. Its the perfect spot for a relaxed meal and theyve set it up well. Theres space for 4 people at the bar, where youd be sitting right next to the sushi chefs. Id recommend sitting at the bar if you get a chance--its so much fun since the chefs usually hand us random items that theyve prepped (on the house!). The tables and décor throughout the rest of the space has a modern feel and theyve curated a vibe that is relaxed and trendy.SERVICE - Friendly staff, quick service. Theyre always looking to accommodate our needs. Theyll give us hot towels for our hands right after we sit down and get us the check right when were ready. Perfection.

One of my favorite local Japanese spots. The place is so warm and friendly. If you sit at the bar the old school Japanese Sushi chefs will entertain you with stories.They have an excellent selection of standard Japanese fair, but also some interesting veggie rolls that you might not find elsewhere.

Got beef sukiyaki and my husband got some sushi rolls. Food was delicious but its pricey even by California standards. The atmosphere is nice but for me its smelly (fried food smell from kitchen) had to air my sweater for a couple days afterwards... Staff was friendly. Went during busy hours and the wait time (time after order until the food comes) was about 20-30 minutes.

A bit uneven -my first seafood roman was really good . What I got on my second visit tasted not as good. The soup tasted a bit watered down and the white fish in the Nannen was dry and chewy..The sushi we had were good but the prices were steeper than under previous management. The servers were a bit slower too.

Fabulous sushi! Generous pieces of very fresh and delectable fish on just the right amount of rice -- melts in your mouth. Gorgeous artistic presentations by the new owner/sushi chef. We are avid sushi eaters both in Japan and in the USA and this is some of the best we have had. Years ago we ate at Sugata almost every Friday night and enjoyed the delicious sushi of Yu-san the original owner of Sugata and the sushi tonight delighted us and reminded us of old times.

Excellent sashimi! Melts in your mouth.. owners are very nice and offer great service. This is a small place with paper menus, but dont let that fool you! Had 3 rolls as well and they were equally as delicious.

Went for dinner last week, l with my Godfather that is 99, he use to love coming here years ago, but I guess everything has changed even he mentioned the service has changed compared to when he use to come here. Very small Japanese restaurant. Service was not pleasant. The servers gave us the bill before we asked as if they were hurrying us to leave. I will say ordered the flying fish sushi, that was pretty fresh, the eel rice dinner was not as good. The eel was very fat mostly fat not much meat...And just poured the sauce over the fish nothing special. The so called salad with the dinner was few piece of pickled cucumber and small bowl of miso soup....For the price we pay... I wasnt expecting extravaganza food but to say the least give us better than few piece of pickled cucumber, if not atleast up the service....The servers was just sitting around hanging around. Wouldnt recommend this place at all.

$20 a dish was pretty overpriced for what it was. The fish was pretty good quality at least but the rolls didnt hold together well. I couldnt escape the feeling that maybe they thought we looked poor or something because they seemed really cold towards us but friendly to visibly wealthy people coming in. Probably wouldnt return.

I heard that this place used to be very good, and was always crowded. Times have changed. Everything we ordered was only fair, with the exception of the agedashi tofu which was soggy and just plain bad. The crowds were also gone, so we just walked in on a Friday night with no wait.Im not sure if they have stopped trying, or have changed hands, or something else, but just not worth trying unless you cant get in elsewhere.

Sushi was ok but nothing special. The place has been remodeled but looks like the work was done by the staff. From our last visit, I expected it to be pricey and thats the only area they didnt let me down. We didnt try anything other than the sushi so I cant speak to the rest of menu.
