Wouldnt you agree this is the best sushi place in town? This is not a fancy restaurant, but their service and food are great given the price and location. All the rolls I have tried so far were decent if not great, and other menus such as salmon or chicken teriyaki were pretty good too. Definitely returning to try some more.

We are avid sushi eaters and Sun Sushi is one of our favorite sushi’s ever. We’ve tried most of the sushi’s in Santa Barbara and keep coming back here as our best.The quality of fish and service is great! Our favorite item is the salmon and tuna 6 ways that comes with a very fun mix of Nigiri.

Even on a busy day, we were seated quickly. The food was delicious! One of the rolls hadnt been served and we were done with all the other food. Once we notified the server he quickly got it to our table. Would definitely return if I was a local.

Best sushi I have had in Santa Barbara in a while! The salmon 6-ways was delicious. I didnt take many photos because I couldnt wait to enjoy my order. We sat at the bar - the Japanese sushi chefs were very busy, yet still very attentive. The staff was very friendly. The choices of fresh fish were varied and well selected.

This is a little hidden gem in Santa Barbara. If you are looking for good sushi at a good value then youve found the right place. I usually go at 5pm right when they open. There is often a line. Crunchy roll, red dragon, volcano, philadelphia, california and spider rolls are some of my favorites. They are on top of filling your drinks up with great service. Will split bills no problem. They also have a pretty good take out, all lined up at the end of the bar.

We are from Western Montana, where I was first introduced to sushi by friends. The place at home is amazing, and Sun Sushi was on par and beat the prices entirely! We greatly enjoyed our meal and are planning to return while in town. Were so glad we came.The salmon 6 ways was my favorite, and we liked everything we tried.

Teriyaki Chicken was bland and the meat was not top of line; otherwise would have rated a 5 star.We love the Mexican Sushi, Crunchy Roll, Jalapeno, Mixed Tempura, and the sashimi. Was really impressed with the girth of the Tuna Sashimi. Seaweed salad was awesome.Overall very delicious experience.Dining outside available.COVID19 protocols respected. Service with masks and gloves. However, gloves should be changed often because after a while the gloves look filthy.Give this place a try!

Amazing sushi. I found myself tearing into the food, forgetting to take pictures or document what I was eating. The rice was sticky, the fish incredibly fresh, and the portions of fish hearty.This place isnt for the faint of finance. The average roll cost for our meal was $15, so the ticket quickly ran up. As a treat, it was totally worth it.

Ive eaten here 2 times now and its been excellent each time. Its not a big place, but is definitely a local favorite, so Id advise making a reservation.The sushi is fresh and very good. I thought the shrimp tempura was a little soggy this last visit, but everyone else in our party enjoyed theirs. Absolutely loved the Gyoza!! You can order it fried (which is how I had mine) or steamed. The dinners are pretty large servings, but they offer a reduced size plate, which is what Ill order next time. It was my birthday, so I got their fried ice cream. Everyone said that Id really enjoy it and they were right. Unusual dessert and huge, so definitely recommend sharing this with someone else.

Try the Salmon 6 Steps and thank me later!!! The sushi is fresh and they serve thick slices as others commented. Miso isnt flavorful, kinda watery as someone mentioned. We also tried the Lemon Pepper Salmon Nigiri, and were pleasantly surprised by the sauce combo that our server shared (Will try to replicate at home since we dont live local) The Yellowtail Delight Roll was good, but State St. Roll I thought was just OK and my fiance didnt like. Its a small, no frills restaurant and server was great when attentive to us, but seemed to be spread thin so we had to wait a while to order more food and drinks took a long time to receive, which he apologized for.

I was blown away by this place. Id compare the quality to Michelin Star omakase Ive had up in the Bay Area, but the prices are totally reasonable, especially for the quality. Not sure what else there is to say. The place is very unassuming, but absolutely incredible.

Without even thinking about it, decided to go here on valentines weekend. Boy we’re they BEYOND busy. But even with the wait for a table, and the amount take out volume they were doing, they were able to get orders out in a timely fashion as well as manage to keep their cool, even when customers may not have been so understanding.

Took >1.5 hours (and >40 minutes of waiting) to pickup food.----We ordered at 6:45pm, were given a pickup time of 7:45pm, and the food wasnt ready until 8:20pm. Sun Sushi should (1) give an accurate wait time! and (2) give those wait times -before- you place the order, not after the order is finalized. We would not have ordered from them had we known it would take over 1.5 hours - our kids were hungry and late to bed, and my husband was standing there waiting for 40 minutes. Not enjoyable at that point.---

You can do so much better than here. Miso soup was thin and watery. Our tempura seemed like it had been standing awhile, not crispy at all. Dipping sauce was also thin and pretty flavorless. Not sure why this place is rated so highly, but you can definitely do better than here.

Ive lived in Santa Barbara since the 70s and have eaten in every Sushi place in town. That said, Sun Sushi has to be the absolute best Sushi place that has ever been in the entire Santa Barbara area. Ming and his entire staff are professional, efficient and very friendly, which only adds to the great environment at Sun Sushi. And as wonderful as the service and atmosphere are they both pale compared to the level of the food, which is spectacular. Each and every dish Ive had there has been so well prepared, so well spiced and or marinated that Ive never needed to use soy sauce as it would only take away from the incredible flavors of each dish.If you enjoy Sushi, you absolutely need to make Sun Sushi your Go To place.

Ordered take out dinner at 6:45pm, received a message saying the food would be ready in 30-45min, but at the end we got our food at 8:15pm. The food was already cold and tasted bad when we got home. All the dishes were ready for a long time but the lady who did pack out was so slow and not familiar with the dishes. She literally checked each takeout receipt like 10 times and still couldn’t figure out which dish belongs to which order. I waited In the restaurant for at least 30 minutes with all the dishes in front of her and she struggled to put the order together, at the end I had to speak out to help her put together my order. They need to improve their take out packing process and not use the lady again. This seriously impact food quality and customer experience. I would not recommend this restaurant at all.

I dined at Sun Sushi earlier this week, and I enjoyed my experience until the very end when I had to use the restroom. When I walked in, I saw what I believe to be a cockroach crawling on the wall. This immediately turned my stomach. Photo attached here - I do not know if Sun Sushi has cockroaches, but there was definitely a large cockroach in the restroom.Besides that, our waiter was nice and the sushi was good. They were busy that night so there was a bit of time between our rolls coming out, but that’s understandable.The cockroach, however, will be the reason that I do not go back.

With COVID, everything is much harder now. We got one of the 4 tables outside to enjoy a real dinner after so many months in quarantine. The fish (uni, toro, fresh shrimp, and hamachi) were all fresh and delicious. The rolls were just the right size (I dont like gigantic rolls) and fresh. The tempura udon was a really nice surprise, the broth was balanced, good umami flavor and not salty - I loved it

Just had yet another sublime sushi experience here. Fish quality and preparation is unparalleled in town. Service is warm and plentiful. People love their institutions and like what theyve known forever. But here you can hear people when they speak and you get personalized service as well as food that uncommonly good.Every time Ive been I have been pleased to the fullest. Tonight was no exception, and I even received a bonus preparation of Spanish mackerel that was heavenly.5 stars but deserves 6.

This is my favorite sushi spot in Santa Barbara. The staff is pleasant and attentive and the fish always tastes fresh. They have a good variety of sushi and rolls which are slightly on the higher end in terms of price, but are worth it. Whether youre looking for a full meal or just want to stop in at the bar for a tasty bite Sun Sushi is a safe bet for Japanese fare.

This placed just lacked in flavor. Anything that required some seasoning - the tare for the unagi, marinade of the kaarage chicken, the tentsuyu dipping sauce for fried item and even the miso soup…all just didn’t have any depth of umami. The rolls are small for the price and the raw fish were thinly sliced. The place has good reviews and we were looking forward to trying it but it was a flop for us.

I cant call myself a sushi buff, its something I greatly enjoy but dont get to have often since my wife has an aversion to it.I asked to have sushi for my birthday and picked Sun Sushi based on the strength of the other reviews. I hadnt been to this place for a few years since it was formerly called Ahi Sushi, and was very happy with the vibe and the quality of the food. A nice variety of very fresh seafood, artfully prepared. They also have my favorite Hakaissan sake, along with an array of other sakes. Kelly is a fantastic server and took great care of us. Never have i ever stopped for sushi on a road trip. But Ive heard Santa Barbara is the place for sushi, with this shop getting the best reviews on google during the pandemic. Im glad i stopped. Maybe now ill start to upgrade my roadtrip fare. I am not disappointed at all except i should have ordered more rolls.

This is an AWFUL restaurant for delivery! The food is FROZEN and NOT FRESH! I had ordered from Hungry Panda, on the menu it has showed salmon(kama) with picture of salmon sashimi, and the restaurant give me tempura-like salmon! I had paid $15 dollars for toro, and the quality is very bad. The meat is very lose, taste like FROZEN toro that has been unfreezes and it’s only 3 pieces. I don’t mind if the toro is 3 pieces, I’m looking for quality, which this restaurant clearly doesn’t have. I have visited this restaurant many times before COVID-19, their salmon 6 steps was fresh so does their sweet shrimp and tuna 6 steps. But this time I’m really disappointed!

My favorite sushi is nigiri and sun sushi serves the most excellent nigiri. The blue fin six steps are like a stairway to bliss. Great staff, if you sit at bar chef will explain what you are ordering. So you will not be confused and be better educated in sushi.I had blue fin six-steps(chef made with 2 piece toro), aji, sea weed salad, miso, stuffed jalapeno, hot green tea, and mochi green tea ice cream.This is more than I usually eat here. We have been disappointed by most sushi restaurants in town, but were pleasantly surprised by Sun Sushi. The service was fast and friendly and the food was fresh and well prepared. I ordered miso and gyoza to start, and liked that the miso had seaweed in it (something not many places seem to do anymore). The gyoza was light and crispy with plenty of flavor. We ordered the State Street roll,a spicy scallop hand roll and snapper and salmon roe nigiris. Everything was great! My only slight complaint was that the State Street roll was only 6 smaller pieces for $13 or $14. The fish was good however, and we enjoyed it.

It’s ok. Had several rolls such (State Street, Dragon, Yellow Tail, Volcano). All tasted fine. Nothing special. The Volcano was not a roll but a baked mess served in tin foil Impossible to eat with chop sticks. The walls were dirty with soy sauce splattered from when it used to be Ahi Sushi. A cut above Grocery store sushi but not the best in San Roque or top 5 in SB IMO. Three stars because the service was friendly. Food 2.5.

Service is great, really attentive and friendly staff. 5/5That being said... Id recommend giving this place a pass. The prices are not reflective of the care put into the food. While the fish was good quality, most of the cuts were very amateur (most nigiri had one pristine and one mangled piece), and the special curing offered in the 6-ways specials seem to be more of a gimmick than something additive to the fish and experience. 2/5The tamago was not made in house and I suspect that the miso was not made to order (firm tofu instead of silken and very soggy seaweed being a major indicator). While previously prepared tamago and a miso soup base are common at most Japanese restaurants, the tamago should at least be made in house and the soup should be dressed and reheated to order. 2/5The biggest offender of the night was the sushi rice. We were served what I suspected was the end of a batch, given its dry, flavorless, and crunchy texture. If the restaurant was slow I would understand, rice can dry out easily when few orders come through but a busy dinner service with dry sushi rice implies issues in the back of house with the preparation of the rice for service. 1/5The udon was passable, but again, not worth the price of admission. The tempura pieces were cooked fine, but the onion ring was 5-6 rings of onion friend together, creating an oil drenched, soggy ring. 3/5.If you are stuck on upper state and must have sushi, I guess Sun Sushi is a fine place to go. However, the trek a couple miles to Edomasa, or literally anywhere else (barring some obvious exceptions) in our small town, will be worth the trouble. We spent $80 all said and done (with a $7 item stricken from the bill) and we left hungry and dissatisfied.I write this with some trepidation simply because I dont feel that Sun Sushi is particularly terrible or offensive, it was just disappointing and amateur. I hope that they get their act together and succeed where Ahi could not, but given the apparent popularity of the place I doubt they will make any big changes until it is too late.

Great ambiance, and good sushi. They have higher end sushi dishes available than the nearby Shintori or Edamosa, at the corresponding higher price. They also have sushi dishes about equivalent, but slightly better quality at a noticible price increase.While they have very good service and some of the better sushi in the area, youll end up paying almost Arigato-level prices for it. At least they take reservations though, unlike Arigato.
