2023-11-05 14:43:20I went to Sushi Sams with a few friends for dinner on a weekday. From what Ive heard, you have to call them and make a reservation ahead of time. They dont have an online reservation system. The place was busy when we went there. My friend and I tried their omakase and also ordered some other dishes separately. Their omakase price is not mentioned on the menu, so youll have to check the prices with the staff when you are there. The omakase includes 8 pieces of nigiri and a homemade dessert (you get to pick your desseet). If you have any allergies, then you can tell the staff, and they can substitute that for a different nigiri option for your omakase. Our omakase was $70 per person for 8 pieces of nigiri and a dessert. Each piece of nigiri came with a thick cut of fresh fish. Our omakase included1. Rosy seabass2. Wild yellow tail3. Bonito4. Smoked Spanish mackerel5. Bluefin tuna6. Black cod7. Mackerel pike8. Uni9. Chestnut cream roll cake (season dessert)Every nigiri in the omakase was delicious, and I was pleasantly surprised by the dessert. Im not a big chestnut fan, but this dessert was really good. The flavor of the chestnut wasnt overpowering, and the cake was light.I also tried their unagi, albacore, and hamachi nigiri. Albacore and hamachi nigiri were extra salty. A5 wagyu nigiri was good, but it came with a thin slice of wagyu beef. The chili dog (spicy tuna) was pretty good as well. Overall, its a great sushi restaurant to try in the Bay area if you havent already.

2023-09-02 03:58:12Hands down still the best sushi I get even after trying many highly acclaimed places around the world including within Japan.Im convinced its the best/most authentic omakase experience you can get if English is your primary language. The price, friendliness, casualness, and quality is world-class.This place is a must-go location every time I am in the Bay Area.Make reservations about a week in advance. Get the omakase, for sure.

2023-08-25 19:04:47I didnt have a big feast as I only ate solo. The food served is authentic and you can find dishes that are popular with Asians and probably not among the non-Asian patrons.I am showing photos of an unusual dish that was excellently done and be highly recommended for connoisseurs who desire natural sources of calcium and minerals.Be reminded to make reservations before visiting as this place is very busy, especially during non-weekdays.

2023-10-07 18:21:18A San Mateo classic sushi place. If youre planning on going on a weekend, please get an in-person reservation in advance. Tried the Omakase which includes a dessert of choice. Really great variety and fresh imported fish!

2023-11-19 06:49:28Decades long fan of Sushi Sam’s. Had omakase after a long hiatus due to Covid and their change in hours. Omakase is still good - had their uni and the fattiest toro! during this time of year, I felt like I was missing my summer red copper salmon. Love their dessert add-on. All options were excellent - almond tofu, strawberry mousse, cream cheesecake with fig. Best dish was a new one - the Mackerel Tataki, where they skinned it raw and paired it with special ginger and wasabi, and the remaining bone was then deep fried and brought back to the table. Easily the best dish of the evening. Thank you for impressing in new ways tonight!

2023-07-22 18:58:01Ordered the omakase, a wagyu beef curry, and a super Sam special hand roll. We also shared the chicken karaage between 2 couples. The omakase was priced at 76/person, the wagyu beef curry was unfortunately mostly vegetables, there were only 2 cubes of beef in our order. The hand roll was tasty. Omakase comes with a dessert you can select from. The omakase had 5 pieces that are on the special fish nigiri menu, and 3 of them were MP, the toro, copper river salmon, and uni. We had ordered the sea bass separately.Reservations are hard to come by, they have preset seatings to keep the flow going.

2023-09-22 20:30:43Sushi was amazing, got the omakase set and the toro, uni, and salmon was outstanding. 8 pieces + dessert. There was a looong wait (30 min) between the first half and second half of pieces of the omakase. Dessert was really good. Got the green tea tiramisu and the goat cheese and fig cheesecake. There is a garage for parking (paybyphone)

2023-07-21 16:49:16Extremely busy place in San Mateo for dinner. The restaurant feels and smells like a pretty old place and the workers seem really busy. The wait time was extremely long here. I came with 9 people all of whom had ordered the 10 piece Omakase with some add ons while I ordered the Chirashi Sushi.I enjoyed my Chirashi, I loved how they seasoned the rice and all of the fish had great quality, especially the hamachi. It took over two hours for the omakase to come out completely, and the people I was with waited over half an hour for the second half of their sushi to begin coming (it also came one piece at a time) so overall we spent way too long of a time here. I am guessing that this service speed was the reason why the wait time to get seated was so long as well. The extremely slow wait times for the food to came out is why I would hesitate to give this place five stars. Apart from this, the service and waiters were friendly.

2023-03-25 00:28:29Really high quality and creative dishes that uses seasonal ingredients, price is higher than the mid-tier sushi place but the quality is in the top-tier. The setting feels like a home-run izakaya. The servers are all very nice and chatty about the dish and omakase selections, giving you the backgrounds of the seasonal ingredients. A few downsides: 1) you have to walk-in fo make a reservation (we did it a week in advance). Dont try to call because the line always drops. 2) The wait in-between dishes are quite long. 3) Expect to pay tad more but the quality is well worth it.Dishes: I recommend one serving of omakase per 2 person and add on daily specials. They have tons of interesting selections that you may not see elsewhere or out of season.Uni is the one of the freshest I had.Chirashi is really good too with fish powder on rice although the portion looks smaller.I really enjoyed the cherry trout.
