Dined in with 2 friends. About 7:30 pm. This place has been here a long time with different owners though always sushi etc. it’s like being in a large cave. Lights needed to be dimmed a little, too bright. Patchwork paint, no warmth when you walk in. But great food & service!!!!

We came in with a large party for my friends birthday and the staff was extremely awesome and welcoming. The food was awesome, especially the specialty rolls (Jalepeño Bomb is amazing). They gave us a free mochi desert and fresh orange/cherry for all of us. Overall awesome experience and friendly staff, will definitely continue to go.

Sushiya is a delicious sit down restaurant and a great place for an unhurried meal. They make everything when ordered so the timing can be a bit slow but well worth the wait.This is a great place for a group of any size and my pro tip for families is to make sure the kids have a snack before you go (really my tip for every restaurant).Rolls are great, soup is delightful, and the combos are a great value.

Food/Taste/Flavor : 4/5 Rice was a bit hard and smushed; didnt have the texture of sushi rice. Relied heavily on their sauces for flavor. They cut back on the more expensive ingredients in the rolls. The tempura was soggy in the roll. Good wasabi not grainy. Presentation was great and beautifully rolled! It is more americanized so the sauces are pretty heavy - a bit too sweet. Definitely hits the spot though and fulfills your sushi craving in SLO.Ambience : 3/5 - sticky tables and old-looking chairs. Dark with christmas lights. Not a uniform theme to the interior. Definitely more americanized. There is faint music playing in the background. Loud enough to hear but not loud enough to enjoy.Service : 3/5 - They prioritized an elderly couple who mustve been regulars. They actually got their food very quickly. We came at 6:15pm and thought it wouldnt be too packed. They did have alot of to-go order. No one came by to tell us our order was still coming. So when it got close to 7:00pm, we were debating whether to leave. We waited for 40 minutes for just two rolls.Value for Price : 5/5 We ordered from the 50% off yellow menu. And they didnt tax and tip on the original price at the end of it. Overall, their rolls were strongly flavored but it truly satisfied my sushi cravings - just dont expect the topnotch Japanese restaurant qualities in major cities.

Sometimes you want high end sushi, but sometimes you want affordable, dank Japanese food. This is where Sushiya comes in.+ Great prices that gets you a butt load of food without breaking the bank.+ They have a solid 50% off Specialty Rolls menu if your total is over $15. Lots of rolls to choose from, great variety, interesting/fun names, and great combinations.+ Super Dragon Rolls was exactly what I wanted. Large pieces, generous toppings, super really filling. Great for sharing!+ The Lunch Specials are a great deal with lots of food. This is good to order when youre hungry and want a variety. I dont recommend the beef teriyaki or the sesame chicken because both were dry, albeit the generous amount of sauce.+ Tempura here is SO GOOD. Not soggy, great crisp, and large pieces.+ CHRIRASHI BOWL! For about $22, this is SO WORTH IT. Its not mind blowing, melt in your mouth sushi but it was fresh, generous, and great variety of fish. The sushi rice was perfect.+ Dim and dingy interior that feels like a cave+ Spacious dining area with plenty of seating. Came for Sunday lunch. I liked everything I ordered—sesame chicken combo plate. Other couple with us who go frequently said they think the chef changed and the bulgogi isn’t as good.The wait staff must have been having a bad day—never smiled back at us, made little eye contact, grimaced when we asked for silverware for the kids instead of chopsticks, delivered one lunch 10 minutes after everyone else’s without any explanation or apology. I’d go again, but hope for a different server.So, food=4⭐️, service=2⭐️

For the price and quality this place is unbeatable.I enjoy going to get sushi here every time. Although do not expect it to be a quick meal every time, as the wait time can vary.Sushiya has a large selection of sushi rolls and all have been great. However, the feature that makes Sushiya my go to sushi place is their 50% off deal everyday if you spend at least $15. The food seems expensive at first at about $13-$15 per roll, but once that 50% is accounted for, I can get two rolls and a drink for less than $20.Aside from the low cost the sushi rolls are phenomenal by themselves. Its just a solid place that is affordable.

I have been here quite a few times and enjoy the food. However, on a recent trip the waiter dropped the entire roll on me then walked away. No offer to remake, no offer to even help clean up. I had to ask another waiter for a new roll and the manager had to come over to ask what had happened and was surprised when I wanted a new roll. There was still sushi sauce all over me and the roll was still in pieces on the table where I had tried to pick it up.Always terrible service but fairly good food for good price.

Love their half off Yellow page menu!!! Service sometimes is HORRIBLE but other times is amazing!!You have to sit at the bar. They take care of us everytime!Yearly edit; their prices went up due to Covid, but that’s to be expected. The sushi here is very good. We have only tried it the one time and do not plan on returning. They seemed to be understaffed on servers. We waited 10 minutes to be seated even though they had open tables. Which was fine. Its when we were seated we were not given menus. We finally grabbed some menus from a table that walked out because of the wait. We got our drink orders in and thats the only glass of water I recieved for the entire meal. We did not receive everything we asked for. They did not charge us for it either we just never recieved it. We would have asked about it and asked for a refill however we never seen our server again until we were handed the check. Now the server was very nice and polite. Just incredibly understaffed. It was a good value for the food. They have a special menu thats fifty percent off. As mentioned before the food was great just had a very poor experience.

Lol the Santa Maria & Kiss on the Beach rolls are our go-to. 😋 They have a yellow menu that lists all half off rolls & such during their lunch time, which is great! The service on the other hand isnt so good.. Nice people, but even at dead times, I have to ask for literally everything or get it myself & it makes me nuts. (A soup spoon please, a booster please, a napkin please, chopsticks? my soup/salad?) 😬 Were not real needy people, just want our food & a way to comfortably eat it. 😄

We literally waited an hour for our food. They were busy but no where near full. I think maybe 20 to 24 customers. Understaffed in the dining room and 2 sushi chefs behind the bar that couldnt make tickets in our or more than one order at a time. Finally we just left. No idea what is going on here but they need some new management to get it under control. Stay away!

Went to dinner with my wife, the service was good until it came down to an issue with out order. They asked if we were doing alright, and we pointed out that we had only received 3 out of the 5 rolls that we ordered. Two ladies tried to help us figure it out, when the woman who brought our food came over with our ticket. She asked us to describe what we received, and ended up arguing with us over how much food was actually brought to us.Later the chef came out and admitted guilt, he made the wrong ticket and offered a free dessert. We refused, we had asked for the remaining two rolls to be boxed several times and we had asked for the receipt as well. Finally we got sick of waiting and went to the front, where our server apologized and stated she couldnt give us anything! Apparently they didnt believe her and all they could give us was a free dessert, we had to pay for the entire meal including the two rolls that we didnt receive until the end despite them screwing it all up.The cherry on top was that the people next to us got OUR FOOD, they admitted it and apologized after more was brought to them without them realizing they had received more than they paid for. Even then 4 people couldnt put their heads together and realize that we werent lying.

We have frequented a handful of times because of good value lunch menu. wont be returning after our lunch today. smelled heavy of bleach. very hungry so decided to stay. then overheard wait staff in back say to other staff that he got sick from the restaurant food the otherday. still decided to stick it out-hunger overrode even the comment. by the end of lunch we didnt feel well-because of the strong bleach smell not the food. the place seems to be falling to old age and lack of attention. sticky tables, ragged menus, dirty glass partitions and general low vibe. wait staff is always different telling me its coming from the top down. value will no longer override all the other pitfalls for us. the food is good but not great.

Overall was disappointed with both the quality of the food and the service. Their presentation of the roll was quickly put together, not uniform, and had so much excess ponzu sauce. The plate the roll came on felt gritty and had rice stuck to the bottom. Their glass soy sauce containers look like they havent been wiped down or cleaned in a long time. The server came by with the check in hand only to then ask if we wanted anything else or dessert. If you are looking for casual sushi, you are better off at Sumo. If you are looking for a nice night out, head to Goshi.

Not good. We ordered shrimp tempera with veggies and got fried mystery fish instead. Also ordered Korean bbq and got a cut up fried patty instead. No air conditioning. Ice tea had a bad taste. The raw fish was warm. The sushi wasnt cut all the way though so I had to rip it apart with my hands. Our first waitress was an airhead. Dont go here. Ill update if I get food poisoning.

Our sever only came check on us once. Ordered sushi roll for the side of a combo. They didnt didnt bring the sushi to us. We couldnt find a server and when we finished eating our server finally came and I had to ask for the sushi roll we ordered.. I am unsure why my mother always brings me back here. Every time I come its the same story different day; slow service, lack of interest, and bad vibes. Sushiya seems always depressed and quiet, servers are slow and never enthusiastic, on top of that the food always comes late and cold and low quality (I can bet they use a microwave for the majority of their foods). Their menu is just too much and I think they need to cut down and specialize. Without these changes this restaurant is on the road to closure.

Edit: 2/8/19 Went back with high hopes. Family dinner before a big night out. Get seated, order drinks. Drinks come and we order food. Same general thing we have ordered as a family on the last 10-15 times coming to this restaurant. Out of tofu... Okay, no biggie. Waiter even suggests rather than the Red Fox roll that I usually order I should get something comparable from the 50% off yellow menu. Okay, Im game.Food comes, quick service. 4 orders of salmon nigiri instead of the 2 that my daughter always orders, it is literally what she eats every time we go out to sushi. Waiter says okay maybe we can give you a discount. I say no, we ordered 2 and only want 2. He leaves the order of 4 on the table. We carry on with our dinner everything tastes fresh and wonderful my daughter eats 2 orders of salmon sushi.The manager comes over and says he wants to talk to us to figure out where the miscommunication took place. He tells us that an order of salmon nigiri is 2 pieces, a fact of which we are well aware after eating sushi for the last 30 years. He says the server is new and he is working to help the server improve, he says he encourages the server to read back the order before he leaves the table, my wife and I both say he did not. The manager says he can give us a discount on the salmon and I shake my head. I reiterate that we ordered 2 will pay for 2 and only ate 2. He takes the extra two to the back.Very frustrating experience due to the manager, not the server. The manager claims to have restaurant experience but not sushi experience. I think good customer service transcends the genre and the novelty of ones experience is never an excuse. Please dont question a customers word, had we mis-ordered we would have paid for the mistake. I only expect the same courtesy from you.Final Verdict: We will drive to the other side of town to avoid Sushiya and the management. Food has not generally been an issue, but the management and personnel is at all times, at least these days, questionable at best.

I understand that sometimes mistakes happen and orders get lost, but when nobody noticed for an hour and a half! Thats just incompetence. Sushiya was a regular haunt of mine, as it is close to home, but it is no more. To begin with, it never tried to be authentic. You can veer away from authentic Japanese cuisine up to a point, but that point is where quality and consistency is maintained. They have passed that point. The same dish can be presented in many variations depending on the chef, and whoever made my favorite dish is gone now. Ive tried half of the menu items, and nothing is prepared with care. Its like going to Burger Thing, except for sushi. Its overwhelmingly mediocre in taste and in presentation.

Wife and I came for lunch, very nice atmosphere and lighting. Welcomed when we came in and taken to our table. Order sushi Ono, Halibut and Yellowtail, perfect!!! The fish was cold and well presented and the rice held very well. Also ordered Oyako don rice chicken and egg over top hot dish, slow to come out but very good and good flavor. This is a simple dish Recommand if you dont have a large appetite share. Negative thing is wanted oyster but they were out but we will definitely recommand eating here.

I waited 1/2 to get a glass of water while everyone else gets served around me. Then when I got my food the guy throws it at the table and does not even say sorry he took forever.
