Carlos Jr Tempura in Torrance is a fantastic spot for tempura enthusiasts. Despite its popularity, the wait time is reasonable. We explored various options, including the tempura bowl, hot soba, and tempura plate—essentially the same dish with a choice of rice, soba or noodles. The tempura itself is a delight, boasting a perfect blend of tastiness and crispiness. A pleasant surprise came in the form of pickled veggies served at the table, adding an extra layer of flavor to the overall experience. If youre a fan of well-executed tempura, this place is worth a visit. We also really love the egg plant dish!

Delicious tempura! The batter is so crispy but not heavy. I got the combo Tempura and Soba and my friend got the same but with hot udon. We also ordered additional eel tempura, eggplant tempura, and boiled egg tempura - each addition was one piece of tempura. They were all tasty but not the most bang-for-your-buck. I will probably order the same thing but more veggies next time instead. Highly recommend trying this place!

Our meal was delicious, we need to visit again soon. Everything on the menu sounds delicious, hard to just choose one. The staff are very friendly, thorough and prompt. The decor is very clean and tranquil. There’s additional parking in the back. This is definitely a spot for a delicious Japanese meal. Come try and this will be a favorite restaurant of yours too.

Found this spot while googling places nearby to eat (was in the area). The tempura was crisp and not oily like at some places.Tried the udon combo and chicken tendon plate. The portions are enough to fill you and you don’t really need to add extras unless you’re a big eater.Read the poster on how to eat the udon or tendon plate to get the full experience.There is parking in the back of the building if you can’t find street parking.

Legit-ly delicious! Tempura batter is so light and the shrimp crunchy and flavorful. The Japanese omelette appetizer is nice and fluffy. Soba cooked just right and the broth has a nice sansai flavor. A true neighborhood gem.

Wow! This place is sooo yummy. I’ve been eating my Japanese mom’s tempura since a kid, and the tempura was awesome. I had the tempura with cold soba. Hubby who is a retired Japanese chef had the Tuna sashimi over rice (Tekkadon) and tempura and he said his was excellent. We will definitely be back.

Delicious. Nice portions, fair price. Totally see why this place was so busy even with the crazy rain. We beat the rush and were seated right away, we were a party of four. Staff was attentive and courteous. We had two appetizers (duck and garlic mushrooms). Three folks chose the special tempura bowl for the white fish I believe. I opted for the chicken one, most of the other ingredients were the same minus the fish. The two folks we were with were repeat customers so we followed their advice to get the tempura bowls. We left stuffed and needed hours to digest. One thing to note with the duck appetizer, use a little of the salt and some of the yuzu wasabi, it was pleasant altogether.

Had some soba noodles with the eel tempura. Honestly, their tempura batter is the best in town. I dont really like their soba broth. It has yuzu peels in it and i didnt like it. The broth was a bit bland either, but I guess thats what the radish with some soy-based sauce is there. Ill come back for just the tendon!

Im finally leaving a review after my second time. The tempuras are crispy and the sauce isnt too sweet or salty. I especially liked the fried white fish; the fish was tender and soft, and not dry at all, while the breading was crispy.

Their tempura batter was on point. I had the fish plate to try a variety of tempura. My all time fave is the squash, and it was cooked just right, not overly tender which some places can overcook. The scallop patty was an impressive bite which was delicate and held up well in the tsuyu.We were able to be seated right away, and had their been a line I would say it would be worth the wait.

Highly recommended... This is the best place in Southern California for delicious tempura and Tendon. The oil and rice they use are truly identical to what you would have in Japan. I think I set my expectation of this restaurant too high after seeing good reviews? 🤔 I am honestly disappointed after wanting to try this restaurant for so long 😢. Its worth checking out though! And I’m glad I have at least tried 🫶🏻The tempura is good, the batter is very light and crispy. The best part is the soft boiled eggs because the yolk melts! Apart from it, nothing really stands out. We also try a sushi roll, which is very ordinary. Overall, a decent restaurant. 😳

We waited 30 minutes or so to get seated, the restaurant was quite busy even after lunch rush. The ordering process was fast, but the food did come out very slow. The tempura was as advertised, very good. Other items were not quite up to the same level. My beer in particular was not great, it had a metallic tang to it, like it was in the keg too long. I couldnt finish it. We ran out of the table condiments, like the pickled celery and ginger. They didnt refill for us.

My friend took me here to enjoy some awesome tempura, and Im really glad he did. This was the best tempura Ive had in Socal, and it makes sense given the owner lived in Japan and worked his way up to this. The tempura set is large and includes a variety of things to eat. They also have some picked cucumber and bamboo shoots(?) to add extra flavor to them.

Carlos Jr Tempura! The name alone was worth trying out this place. It did not disappoint! So light and crispy, this is the best tempura Ive had outside of Japan in a looooong time!I ate things here that Ive never had in tempura form before like unagi, shishito pepper and scallops. All of which were delicious. You can also get King crab when its in season.The side dishes are also really tasty like the maitake and garlic (mushrooms) and kamo yaki (grilled duck)The origin story of this place is also awesome and inspiring.

Hi.I’ve reviewed this restaurant before that time I’ve given 3 stars… so I would give it a try once again…Last time I’ve ordered cucumber salad..this restaurant didn’t make it either sweet or spicy…Very limited sauced but chilly thread is a kick to brand in all together.. with their famous complimentary pickles…Egg plant appetizer was grilled and marinated with miso based sauce with sesame seeds on top.. tuna flake based miso sauce was creating very generous umami thoroughly, very flavorful dish.And the premium tendon.White fish, baby shrimp,shishito pepper,sea weed paper, scallops and half egg… right amount of combinations of deep fried seafood.. and the enough of the sauce on top of the rice … perfect balance..White fish was super soft and savory and the scallops are perfect balanced texture, and the fried egg was a bomb, the York is dripping out from the batter coat…The zaru soba is quite authentic and big prawns were huge and fill your mouth with full of the ocean flavor…:Overall, this place servers has language barriers, if that don’t bother you this place would be perfect for the late lunch…

I basically stumbled into this gem of a restaurant as I was coming back from a business meeting in the area. I was taken by how delicious their various tempura dishes were. I really enjoyed the option to order individual pieces in addition to a list of set menus.

It was an OK experience.It hit the spot for my tempura craving, but left me tad unsatisfied.What we wrong:- the duck appetizer we got was way overcooked. (Like really bad)- the egg wasnt as runny as I expected, it was on more of a jello consistency by the time I got to it.- the chicken tendon was on a dry sideWhat was great:+ the yuzu/seasoning for the appetizer was good+ tempura was nice and crunchy. Each bite had a satisfying sound and texture.+ the tempura dip/sauce was on point+ egg, even thought I felt it could be cooked less, had a nice creamy texture displaying the high orange quality of the yolk+ white fish tasted great (might be tad fishy for some)The staff was really nice and space was bright and open. Rice, noodles, and sushi complement the tempura here.Good tendon is hard to come by, but TTCJ pretty much nails it on the head. On the front of the menu they advertise 3 elements: a light batter, pure frying oil, and a great soy sauce. All these claims are indeed true.Their Special Tempura Bowl is an excellent example. It sports multiple fried ingredients, is lightly splashed with their signature sauce for flavor, and sits atop a bed of fragrant rice. More exciting is the inclusion of fried yuzu peel, which brightens up your palette against the fried toppings.The service is quick and cordial. While seating is not the comfiest, the main draw is to eat high quality tempura, of which, you’ll find little substitute in Torrence.

The reason for 3 stars is because their tempura is supposed to be the star of the show, but it just didnt have that wow factor compared to other restaurants. Then their supporting actor dishes like soba (udon) and teriyaki chicken are mediocre.Pro tip: ask them for their complimentary pickled ginger and celery (I think). Decently sized restaurant with plenty of seats. Free parking in the back; you can enter from the back. Expect to pay $40-50 per person after tax and tip.

It was our first time to get food here and we were disappointed with the amount of foods we got. Compared to other togo pictures on here, the regular size bowl was a lot smaller (especially the shrimp size & rice amount).Ikura bowl is offensively small. $13 for this? Just a rip off. Maybe less than 50% of the amount you see on the Grubhub picture.Also we ordered the chicken tempura bowl but there was no chicken to be found.The taste was good (soggy but expected that since we are taking it togo). Food was generally decent but not worth waiting for. We went in about 12:40 on Sunday and there were five tables in front of us. It took forever to get in. Everything was as expected but nothing exceptional to wait for. If you have lots of time to spare, try it. If you are in a hurry or simply in hunger mode, I think you should skip it.

Third time here since they shut down the tempura place in the old Mitsuwa Market that was on Western. Third time Carlos Junior hit the spot for our tempura craving. Got the Shrimp Tempura platter! Everything just tastes better as tempura...shrimp, pumpkin, seaweed, shishito pepper all perfectly fried..but not greasy or oily. Great service. Gonna keep coming back!

The taste is good but they advertise themselves as the best tempura in SoCal. I am rather skeptical of this claim. If I an comparing to tempura in Japan, for example, it’s definitely inferior. While I think the flavor is good here, compared to tempura in Japan where it’s light and crispy, it’s a bit heavy and greasy here. I think it’s fine if you don’t have high expectations but there is room for improvement.

My friend had introduced us to this spot and informed us thay theyre known for their tempura but decided to try the udon along with a piece of tempura pumpkin. Tempura was really nice and soft. Sauce was good. Udon was delicious! Its been awhile since Ive had really good udon before I moved from LA. I DEFINITELY recommend this spot. It does get busy so be patient with staff as they do their best and are really really friendly. While ordering I slipped and spoke a word of Spanish and the waiter said it was okay, he knew Spanish as well. Which I appreciate for helping me deal with that slip up! Lmao. Again, very delicious food, and very friendly staff.

The sign is not large and it is deceiving because you think is this a Latin restaurant (Carlos Junior) or is it Japanese (tempura). Do not pass this place up or you will regret it. Met a good friend for lunch. It was three of us. Hubby got salmon roll and beef bowl. Friend got veggie tempura bowl and I got chicken tempura bowl *surprised that chicken was also tempura style. We all enjoyed our food. There is no dipping sauce but not needed. The sauce is incorporated with the tempura. It also comes with miso soup and gooey egg. Breaking the yolk over the rice was a foodie nirvana moment.Lunch for 3 with gratuity was 70 bucks. Well worth it.Too bad we live in Washington state but definitely a place where I would like to eat more off the menu.

Awesome tempura. On the same level as Hannosuke. Its almost as if it is the same chef (it is).I recommend the maitake (which I added to their special tempura plate). The pumpkin tempura is a must have.Their house junmai daiginjo is fruity and floral. Absolutely fabulous! It must try place in old town Torrance. Uniquely special, for tendon and the tempura egg.Their sauces Are delicious for dipping and there is something special about the crispiness of the tempura without the oiliness. I think we’ve tried almost everything on their menu With the exception of the sushi. They have added some special appetizers that have not yet been available but we will return to try.Highly suggest dining in on a weekday, tempura is best eaten freshly in the restaurant they are not busy during the weekdays. On the weekends they can get quite busy.

My goodness, this is some fantastic tempura. If you like food thats lightly battered and fried to perfection (but somehow still feels healthy), then this is exactly the place to go! Dont forget to read the story on the front of the menu, either.I got the sukiyaki tempura plate and some ice cold beer, which was just the right combo for a late lunch. This is the kind of place that chills the glass before they pour the beer - and summers coming up, so keep that in mind.The dipping sauce is a wonderful savory radish sort of sauce. Pairs perfectly with the tempura. The tempura doesnt fall apart or lose its coating when you take a bite. Mind blown by their tempura. The koromo (batter) is so light and crispy. The chef maintains the plumpness of shrimp. The sauce tastes like the ones I had at famous tempura joints in Tokyo.Service is fast, friendly and efficient. I loved their outdoor set up. I truly dislike that my experience the idea of posting negative reviews unless something exceptional has occurred, but that is exactly what I’m doing and, I can only hope that the circumstances are not normal for this restaurant. I was going to meet a friend for lunch here and arrived first. I was greeted and upon stating that I wanted a table for two was seated and given a menu and water for myself and my friend who had not yet arrived. After a few minutes passed I texted my friend and they told me that they would not be able to make it. I’m not sure how differently things would have been if they showed up. I hope that it would have been very different. I sat for over 20 minutes with a a closed menu and the water that I was served. I was able to make brief eye contact with the two severs who were working but they looked past me or through me as they hurriedly moved about the restaurant clearing and wiping tables. After about 15 minutes of waiting three tables had received their checks, been cleared and left but I still had not been acknowledged. Two gentlemen arrived about this time. They were sat, given menus and water, and had their orders taken in about 5 minutes. The server who took their order walked right past in order to do this as they were seated at a table behind me. That was about all the inhospitable treatment that I could handle and I left hungry, confused, and more than a little upset. I really wanted to eat here. I thought that nothing sounded better than the premium tempura plate and a draft Sapporo for about 20 minutes. After that I just wanted to be acknowledged for sitting at a table in the restaurant without a single thing being ordered. I hope that this hasn’t happened to anyone else, and will not happens to anyone else, but it will absolutely not happen to me because I have no intention of ever going back.

I was blown away by how incredible this tempura is. I got the special bowl, and for $13 I got a nice amount of tempura which included 2 shrimp, a white fish, a scallop and shrimp patty which was awesome, and a couple others on top of rice, with a miso soup. Not to mention the egg... Tempura fried soft boiled egg... It was magical. Seriously get here, eat the ginger and celery appetizer, and enjoy.

Was in a party of 4, we all ordered at the same time and I ordered the exact same thing as the person sitting next to me. My 3 friends all got their orders and I told them not to wait for me and to just start eating. I wait a while and my friends were almost finished. We had to remind a waiter that we were still waiting on 1 more plate. By the time I got food, everyone at my table was finished eating and ready to leave.Tempura was not bad. The menu is fairly limited but they cover the whole range of tempuras you can think of. I can definitely tell they use higher quality products at this place but portions are a bit small for how much they cost.I had the regular tempura plate and I have to say I wasnt full after finishing the meal.I think my favorites out of the whole plate was the mushroom and the egg.Make sure you ask for the tsuyu and the garlic chilli if you prefer a bit of spice as the taste is a bit on the bland side.

Made my food and made my day! I immediately got seated and was greeted by a kind waitress. I ordered the premium tempura plate for about 20$ and boy was it absolutely astonishing. Although the architecture wasnt as traditional as I expected the food made up for it. The fish was scored and fried, and melted in my mouth very well. The eel was a hefty portion of the meal, and I would reccommend wait to eat that last. The shrimp tempura was fulfillingly crunchy, and was supported by the radishy dipping sauce. The miso soup wasnt anything unique, but was still delicious as always. I also tried the buckwheat soba with its own dipping sauce, and it was both light and easily slurpable. I went outside with my family and started fanboying over how delicious Mr. Carlos Jr.s food is. I would DEFINITELY reccommend going here any time, any day.

My previous tempura experience has been at sushi restaurants around the LA South Bay and in San Jose, so I did not expect such an awakening of Tempura mastery when my wife and two friends dined here on Sunday afternoon.DELICIOUS! No longer will I associate tempura as just an appetizer. The tempura bowls and plates were filled with tempura seafood, shrimp, vegetables, and nori (a delicios surprise to 3 of the four of us), along with a half boiled egg (which I broke over my rice), and ground radish in the tempura sauce. I wish that I was back there now enjoying another meal.My friend is 1/2 Japanese American and she said that shell be inviting her mom to our house so that we may introduce her to this restaurant.We have guests coming in for the holidays and my wife and I will be showing off Tendon Tempura Carlos Jr. as part of their stay here.Thank you Carlos and your entire team for an excellent dining experience.Sorry, for no pictures of the food but this is our expressions after the wonderful meal.

I really enjoyed my tendon and soba. The tendon wasnt too heavily battered or greasy. The soba noodles looked like they might be overcooked and mushy but they actually held up and were a good texture. Try some of the celery; its still crunchy but has more of a sesame taste than a fibery taste!

Right after we hung up the phone, we realized that there was a mistake on the order so we called right after to fix the order. When we went to pick up the order, not only the order was not fixed, but the guy in the kitchen started rolling his eyes and giving us an attitude to the point where we just felt EXTREMELY uncomfortable. We understand that there can be a miscommunication and mistake can happen when preparing food. And we were going to gladly take whatever was made since we were running out of time too. Usually, they have nice servers, but without them, theres only owner and he is extremely rude and not willing to serve you any food. I dont even know why this place is open if they dont want to-go customers. Very good tempura restaurant.I had a premium tendon.All tempura is good.I felt it had a little too much sauce. Because of a strong taste of sauce, I felt the taste of ikura, which was optional, was weak.But even so, it was very good. But if you like light taste you should ask for less sauce.And, kind of pickles (burdock, vinegar and celery) are very tasty and rare in California.I think the prices are reasonable.I strongly recommend.A parking is at the back of the store.You can park in street as well.The only thing, miso soup isnt very good.It tastes like an instant miso soup.It was a tempura bowl restaurant that even Japanese people can enjoy at a reasonable price.The seasoning was strong and there was a lot of tempura, so I didnt have enough rice. Pickled celery, burdock, and pickled ginger were very delicious.
