Very good barbecue restaurant with quality and value that exceeds Phils BBQ.We got the full rack of pork ribs and a side of potato salad. The ribs were meaty, lean, tasty, and fall off the bone tender. The BBQ sauce is very good and takes the ribs to the next level. The potato salad was very good, with a perfect balance of creaminess and vinegar. The staff was very friendly and extremely efficient. They are so organized, even a long line moves very quickly. We were able to choose and place our To Go order, and be out the door in less than 10 minutes.

Very old school look. I do appreciate the vintage decor. The service was very friendly. Food was just OK. I had the small beef dinner plate. The beef was extremely tender and juicy but lacks seasoning. My sides were fries and macaroni salad. The fries were basic, not crunchy, and could use a little season salt. The Mac salad was okay. I added hot sauce. It was better with a little tangy spice. Ill be back to try a few other dishes.

The food was okay, and service was practically instantaneous, but when the place isnt busy (which it seems like it always isnt), it feels incredibly dreary; the inside looks pretty outdated. would have to be seriously convinced to come back here, otherwise, id rather go to some other barbeque restaurant.

Recommended by friends but i thinks its been a solid decade since they last came service was definitely friendly and warm food was not southern and once you drench it in the BBQ sauce its passable. Would not recommend or go back.

I love barbecue and I almost consider myself a barbecue aficionado but I think I am fair when I evaluate the food . The ribs were Very tender with a nice smoke ring. However they did not have a lot of flavor like no dry rub or seasoning was applied The chicken was cooked to perfection and tender. The macaroni and cheese was lukewarm. The staff was friendly in accommodating for the most part. I would give this place a second chance if I’m in the area.

I wasnt sure what to make of this place. I went for lunch on a random Wednesday afternoon. It was dead empty so we were able to walk right up to the counter and order. The staff were very nice and the food came out quickly. As far as Im told this is a really old restaurant that seems to only cater to the people that have been going here for decades. The food was decent and the barbecue sauce was delicious. Not sure if I would drive here again though.

Since childhood, 1960s, this place has never disappointed me. I hadnt been there since moving back into the area and I am glad that I did. It is going on my must eat at list. Large portions so there was 2 meals in one. Great family place. I am looking forward to them catering our church Christmas dinner this year.

I knew better. You cant find good barbeque in Cali. Matter of fact, Ive had a vegan barbeque sandwich better than what they gave me. Expect a very basic sandwich. Just meat and bread. No sauce on the meat. No cheese. No fixings or condiments. Just plain meat and bread. The Mac and cheese is so gross. Theres a sprinkle of black pepper. Honestly it tastes like it wasnt stirred. The cheese tastes weird. I think they use lots of sour cream in the sauce. Tastes more like sour cream than cheese. They give you a bunch of barbeque sauce but serve you dry meat. 🤮🤮🤮If you know what good barbeque tastes like, youre not gonna like this place.

Homey vibes. Bbq cooked well. The sauce was a little extra sweet for my taste, but I still enjoyed it. Excellent fries. Meat falling off the ribs. Juicy chicken. Kids inhaled the mac n cheese. Everyone was happy and so full I might not eat another meal until about 24 hours after that one 😅

My wife and I came here after being recommended by some friends. The pulled pork was too dry and the Mac and cheese tasted like Mac and water. The barbecue sauce had no flavor other than vinegar. It was definitely one of the worst barbecue places I’ve tried and way too expensive for what you get.

Ive gone to the location in La Mesa for years and have never had any issues with portion, quality, or taste. Even the customer service is great in the La Mesa Location. However, for the first time, the National City location disappointed me. The beans were cold, the corn bread was cold, portion seemed soo much smaller than usual. The Mac and cheese had no flavor. To top it off the cashier seemed like she didnt even want to be there. Im definitely sticking to the La Mesa Location from now on.

A top 2 Family Style Restaurant in San Diego (and its not 2). Its been my familys restaurant since before I was born and has stayed that way to this day for a very good reason. Honestly I really wanted to give this place something better but it would be hard to find a reason to do so. The service was good because the employees are friendly but the food just kinda killed the mood for me. Its almost as if I literally could have made each thing at home because of how it tasted. The chicken sandwich I had was a little bland which was ashame because it was juicy. The BBQ sauce was pretty good but everything else was just mediocre to the point where it left me unimpressed. The restaurant itself seemed a little drab as well or maybe because it only had about 5 people there other than me. I will give this place another shot just to see if it was a one time thing.

We are originally from Kansas City and have been craving some good BBQ. We got the 17.99 plate with ribs ham and beef (brisket). The ribs were my favorite! So good. My son loved the brisket and my husband loved the ham. There desserts were also very good. I am not sure if they make them in house but they dont taste like they are from frozen. Delicious, home made BBQ cuisine. Down home, comforting feel with oldies playing on the radio, which I really enjoyed. I enjoyed singing along to David Allen Coe while consuming my ribs in all of their special BBQ sauce glory. Because it was my first time there, the chef came over to my table to offer me samples of cuts of the meat I didnt get. The home made mac was delicious and the ribs I ordered were as well! Big servings for even a small plate order! I will be happily eating leftovers for lunch tomorrow! 😉 Service was excellent. Felt like they were happy to be there.

Been coming here since I was a kid.... 50+ years ... it can be a hit or miss depending on your luck of the day... sometimes the pork ribs are great ... other times theyve been tough and hard to eat... beans are spot on. .. the fries are always good... nothing fancy at all but good flavor..... good sauce too...The place is never busy and you can have a leisurely time dining anytime of the day. I’ve been going here for over 15 years. For people who say there’s no seasoning or flavor, the ribs are SMOKED. These are NOT your traditional bbq ribs and that’s why this place sticks out. If you want spicy sauce dripping all over the place and grease this is not for you . If you like that smoked, almost ham like flavor with a sweet sauce that compliments it then this is the place. My daughter and I visited this place, she had the sloppy Joe and I had the ribs bolth tender and the ribs had a good smoke ring but NO flavour I was sadly disappointed I am a huge bbq nut so I know my bbq . Suggestion mabe work on a signature rub or seasoning and for the love of God add some diffrent styles of bbq sauce something not apercot flavored and liven up the vibe in store .

This place is trying too hard to be a Texas barbecue pit restaurant, and isn’t making it. First hint: make your own sauce. Second hint: make your own homemade rolls. 3rd hint: don’t use discount canned beans. 4th hint: don’t have the guy behind the counter barking at customers for touching THEIR tray of food because another plate isn’t gonna fit on it.This is definitely a one time place. We won’t be back. $40 bucks for 3 plates of food with the weirdest coleslaw I’ve put in my mouth. And their Mac and cheese looked like it had been reheated every day since Tuesday or so. It’s Saturday afternoon.Service is key. I’ll forgive slightly subpar food if you’re genuinely friendly. Grumpy and canned, preprocessed food is a sure fire way to ensure I blow you up in a review and don’t come back to your establishment.

We (family, friends and neighbors) love The Barbecue Pit. I personally have been eating there for around 60 years. I dont think there is another place like it. They are famous for their sauce and BBQ style. It is a cafeteria style, order at the counter type restaurant. Many combinations and side dishes. A little pricey but it is well worth it.

This is a old school joint, but tasty BBQ ham and beef sandwiches been going here off and on for 50, yes I said 50 years since I was a kid dont be shy with the sauce it enhances the flavor . Its kinda like a cafeteria, Walk up put in order wait a couple of mins, because their hand carving the meat onto your sandwich then find a table and sit down and enjoy. There are some things that you never want to change and the barbecue pits beef and ham are two of those things since first coming here in the early seventies their barbecue meat and sauce is still the best. Today I ordered the beef sandwich and .split pea soup with ham and a drink and it cost me $11 so I certainly cant complain but the soup was delicious along with the pit cooked meat that is smoked thru the entire night...the best!

First & last time there, our order was to go. My mom & I walked in & it looked like a truck stop diner without the truck stop vibe, we walked up to the counter & the woman that was helping us noticed that my mom required more time & some assistance to order. While this was happening behind the counter my mom was talking about how my brother picked this place & praised how good it is. The cashier was not cordial, didnt make eye contact until the money came out & her eyes definitely made contact with that. Customer service was out the door with her. The food was not impressive - the bbq sauce on my dry pulled pork sandwich tasted like Sweet Baby Rays Hickory & Brown Sugar bbq sauce that I buy from the store. Pulled pork was superrrrr dry and tasteless. Had to drown it with BBQ sauce to it choke down. Slaw was weird and not very edible. The beans were ok, but they were like pinto beans and not bbq beans and didnt go with the meal. Im from the South, and havent been able to find any decent BBQ since Ive been forced to move to California. I even told the owner who was working the front counter that, and he assured me oh man, were from Texas and we make the best darn bbq u ever had. Lol NOT. The thing they were famous for was the mac n cheese, but the man who comes in once a week to make it didnt come in to work that day I was told. Maybe if their employee would have come to work it might have saved the meal and bumped them to 2 or 3 stars, but no. Also WAY OVERPRICED. This place has been our family favorite since the 1970s. This place will even cook your Thanksgiving turkey and their open on Christmas too. The #10 is my item of choice with the fantastic baked beans that I add their delicious bar b queue sauce too. Also try dipping your Frys in the sauce.

Didn’t like it. I asked for the beef bbq ribs plate and they gave me pork. The man serving the food was impatient. Rushing me by tapping on the counter. The ribs didn’t have bbq on them they just gave me two little sides of bbq and it wasn’t enough. The cornbread they gave me was cold. Seems like they kept it in the fridge. The whole staff all had their eyes on me & I felt like I couldn’t take my time to see what was on the menu. Not going there again. The plate cost $15 for bad food and bad service.

Being from Texas i pride myself on knowing good BBQ. The BBQ pit was different, its not a bad joint like the others ive eaten at on southern californa... Phils bbq 👎. The Barbeque pit adds ricotta to their mac n cheese, not a big fan. They also use beef shoulder as an alternate to brisket alternate, also not a huge fan. The shoulder is dryer than brisket and felt like i was eating bbq roast beef, which i like just not in bbq. The ribs on the other hand. They are cooked to perfection. What do i mean by that, the cartilage is cooked enough to be eaten, HUGE fan. Although it felt like they were missing something couldnt put my finger on it just could tell they were missing a seasoning. I give it a 3 out of 5. Should check it out and let me know

I met Coop when I went in to his restaurant in National City as the aroma of the BBQ attracted me when I rolled into the Shopping Center looking for a new place for lunch. The place is nicely appointed and they have a rustic look (as one would expect for a BBQ joint.)Coop suggested the pulled pork sandwich with fries and baked beans so I took him on his word. WOW! The Barbecue Pit is special. I havent found any other BBQ joint that uses the cut of beef this place does. Everywhere you go youll find brisket as the preferred beef cut for throwing in the smoker or pit. And I thoroughly enjoy a good brisket or some nice pulled pork. But you will find it a daunting task to find a juicier, more tender piece of beef coming out of any smoker or pit anywhere. Anywhere!
