Absolutely wonderful time here! The food was delicious and well priced and the man at the front counter whom I assume was the owner was extremely friendly and attentive to us.I ordered the dragon roll, Tokyo Special Roll, and chicken teriyaki bento. Ive yet to try authentic Japanese food in Japan, but this is easily the best Ive had out of six places in Modesto and easily rivals far more expensive food Ive had in the Bay Area and Sacramento.I came here to celebrate my birthday, and Im usually too cheap to go out to eat other than special occasions, but Im certainly making an exception for this restaurant and coming back here to explore more of their menu.Since theyre located downtown you may have a slight hassle in finding parking, and Im sure that affording downtown rent prices is why they serve everything with disposable plates/utensils and dont invest money in ambiance but thats perfectly fine by me as all that really matters is the food, friendliness, and cost

The best sushi place in town. Customer service is exceptional, always greeted and treated like one of their own. Food always tastes fresh and great. Good prices. We regret going anywhere else when these guys are closed.

I’m not big on reviews but I think as an establishment you have to be able to do the basicsA California roll with no cucumber and cut, not shredded WalMart frozen crab is pretty bad.And a golden salmon roll, 5 palm size pieces never seen it beforeWasn’t for me but might be for you (4/10)

What a wonderfully delicious place to pop in and enjoy some great food and exceptional service. I highly, highly recommend the Hot and Spicy Ramen and dont let the name fool you because the hot and spice are not overbearing at all and in fact is simply, yet complex, flavor. I cannot be more pleased. Talk about comfort food! George is a great person and his wife Holly serves up the deliciousness! Located on J street in downtown Modesto. Pop in and give it a try. Youll be glad you did.

My husband and I biked here yesterday and had a most enjoyable dinner. We started with beer and appetizers well priced for Happy Hour. I then had a combination with sushimi and California roll. They were excellent. My husband had a pork dish that we both liked. The service was outstanding as well. Well be back.

This. Place. Is. Amazing!!!! The food was spectacular, and the service was upbeat and friendly. The prices are decently cheap too. We started off with oyster shooters, and they disapeared so fast I didnt have time to take a picture. Lol. Those were the best oysters I have ever had. They literally melted in your mouth! All of my thanks to the chef for the amazing food! And to our server we didnt get the name of. Thank you for the awesome service!

My experience was welcomed by a nice presence when I walked in and I order my food. I got my order in a fast polite manner in which it was really good. I got the sweet and sour pork and pork was so crunchy with so much flavor and my chow mein was so smooth and delicous. My egg roll i got was so fresh, crunchy, and fluffy that it was to die for. I love this place now that I went and Ill definitely go again real soon.

Oh my gosh, this food was amazing. We went to RAW and it was far too busy so we googled sushi in downtown Modesto and happened upon Tokyo Express. Now its small, and had only a few patrons so I was a bit nervous and almost left. I have had a difficult time finding good sushi here in Modesto. This place was the best sushi that I have had in a very very long time. Everything was so fresh and delicious. I also ordered the shrimp fried rice, and it was the best that I have ever had in my life. Most places put the tiny little shrimp in. These were very good size and so fresh. I cant wait to go back.

I really liked the food, as did my wife and all 3 kids we had with us. I got the Kung Pao Chicken w/ Fried Rice and it was spicy and flavorful. My wife got the Orange Chicken and I took a bite of it, it was really nice. Well fried. I also got a Sushi roll w/ tempura & spicy tuna that was yummy. I dont recall what it was called though lol.The kids got a Cherry Blossom Roll, Sashimi plate and a Cucumber Roll. Everyone ate all of their food, so I think they liked it.

The chicken was very dry the teriyaki sauce was nasty. but the garlic sauce was good I didnt enjoy the meal at all and I wont be going back. And the rice wasnt cooked it was very hard

This place is great. My last visit I had the bbq pork ramen and a Philly roll and both were excellent. Ramen had plenty of meat and the broth was both delicious and not too salty. Philly roll was great too. Ive also had the udon and several of the Chinese dishes in the past and Ive never been disappointed. Staff is friendly and service is good.

I love this place. My husband and I found it randomly one night going to to the movies. It’s a small hidden spot with the best food ever. I’m normally picky when it comes to Chinese food but the best of it is here and to top it off they also have the best Japanese food. And don’t get me started on their sake 👌🏼. Amazing all around including the staff. Always so friendly. I highly recommend this place. Prefect little spot in Modesto.

Had one of my best experiences ordering over the phone today. I spoke to one of the employees and the level of customer service that was paired with my excellent food, comes second to none. The gentlemen was able to turn my day completely around just by how he spoke to me over the phone about my order. Great customer service does not come easy but what I experienced today both over the phone and picking up my order, I wont soon forget when visiting other local eateries. 5/5 Would go there again just to have my day uplifted by the wonderful staff. I can’t believe it’s been almost 20 years since I first ate at Tokyo Express and I’ve never before left a review.I love the food and the staff are wonderful. I used to eat here so regularly that Tony had my order memorized.My favorites are Szechuan shrimp and kung pao shrimp.Takeaway orders are always fast, correct, well packaged, and HOT.

Absolutely amazing place to eat. Great service and friendly staff. The food is phenomenal, some of the best food in Modesto. Had the sweet and sour pork with chowmein and egg roll. Everything was beautifully handmade and the egg roll was so delicate and decedent. Husband had the gyoza and ramen and everything was delicious. Everything is handmade. New favorite spot!!

I love this place. I go once a month; its a lovely small restaurant in the heart of downtown. Its family own with friendly, fast service with a smile. Go and try their sushi menu my favorites are fantasy roll, Lomi salmon, or spicy shrimp and eel and end it with their oyster shooter so good. The best part is if you have a family member who does not eat sushi, they have a wide variety of Chinese food like garlic chicken, Mongolian beef and potsticker, and much more. It makes me hungry just thinking about it.

I love this place! The food is delicious and the service is spot on. Both Chinese food and Sushi. Lots of options. The seating area can be a little small, but that is my only complaint. Get there early if you go during a high time. Highly recommend!

Ate lunch here today: C11 (3 Fried Prawns, Veggie Fried Rice, Veggie Chow Mein). Very quick service and the food was terrific!I have eaten here twice before, first on a lunch/movie date. I had the Chicken Curry bowl (terrific and filling). I ate here earlier this year and again had the Chicken Curry bowl with Fried Prawn appetizer. Again, excellent dish.

This is the first place I tasted authentic sushi with wasabi. It was exciting, the place felt warm and inviting. Theres a big variety of sushi and other Chinese food options to chose from. I tried the Golden Salmon sushi roll and was satisfied with my choice. I went close to closing time as a night snack and I recommend this place for a date. Overall I loved this place.

I have Celiac Disease, which makes it hard to find sushi that I can safely eat! I walked into Tokyo Express on a whim after visiting the tea shop next door. The 2 guys in the front were so nice and polite! The guy behind the counter was so kind to answer all of my gluten free questions and made sure what I ordered was safe. I ordered the Philly Roll and the Lomi Salmon Roll, both were DELICIOUS! He was also able to make me a stir-fry but I opted to get sushi only. I’m here for 6 months for work and happy to know I can come here and get delicious sushi while I’m here in Modesto ❤️ Thank you so much again for your patience!

6 STARS!!! Food is amazing and the portions fit the price! I forgot to get the name of the server tonight, but whoever the chef and the server was on 7/26/17 at around 7:00pm, KEEP THEM! I was here last Saturday for lunch. Your music in the back room was way too loud, to the point we were having to talk over it. The woman who took our order, who I have never seen before, no greeting and just not friendly at all. I had a question about the menu and no effort to offer clarification. Food arrived warm. The beef was tough and I got stuck with some type of deep fried dark brown fish things in the corner of my Bento Box . No return to the table from her to refill our water. My buddy asked you about MSG and shared that he can NOT have it as he has a heart issue. You recommended the vegetables dish and he went along with it. He later told me there was MSG in that food as he could feel it later that night.A man arrived a little later, who I think is the owner and you could see the tension between the two. Somebody was not happy about something. Sorry, but your bad day totally ruined our lunch experience. We felt the tension in the service we received and the quality of the food you served us. We were blown away, because we have never had a meal like this or customer service like this when the guys are working. After this, I would not recommend you to anyone I know

Was disappointed by the taste. I was hoping it was good since my sister and friends recommended me to go there. So I had some of the premier advertised sushi, all were decent but lacked the proper sushi rice. They all broke apart easily and didnt taste fresh. Sauces used tasted like cheap knockoff Sriracha. Fantasy roll tasted like stir fry. The yaki udon tasted like they put a massive amount of ketchup or Worcester sauce. I really hoped it was good. But our first experience was a big letdown.

Friendly staff and great customer service. It is a nice little spot in the middle of downtown modesto. Nice to see that there are still some small chinese/japanese restaurants out there with some meals that taste like theyre home cooked. The price is also great for the food you get, as well as the portion size! They are very generous. Also if you are a vegan/vegetarian they are very accommodating and have options for you. I always go here when Im downtown or when Im waiting to watch a movie. Definitely a must try!!!!

This is a cozy place in downtown Modesto. You can eat downstairs or upstairs (recommend downstairs if you drink a lot of Sake). They serve Japanese and Chinese dishes. I always order sushi and it fills me up. I havent really tried the Chinese dishes, but always see others order. I love their loose green tea! It does get but I dont mind the wait.

Really good service - great server!I think this is the kind of food where you either like it or you dont. So its very subjective! I ordered the teriyaki chicken and was quite surprised by the sauce. First restaurant Ive been to that it wasnt sweet! You know how your taste buds are waiting for something and then its different and your taste buds are like what? The sauce was a bit more astringent, so I wasnt ready for that!! But I thought it was good and ate till I was full!I wish our server had explained the difference between the teriyaki lunch and the teriyaki dinner. We could have just shared, we didnt need to buy two meals.Good fresh food and wonderful service!

If you want good food, cheap food, fast service, or good ambiance, do not go here! I can only speak to 3 rolls and the mixed fried seafood entree, but there is too much to say about each of these to try this restaurant again.We got a spider roll, a Dragon Roll, and the best role of the knights a y and M roll which had tuna, spicy tuna and avocado. This one was fine, but the Dragon Roll relied too heavily on fried food and sauce, and the spider roll had Bland unseasoned crab and no other redeeming qualities. The mixed fried seafood was a complete failure. We paid extra for an upgrade that included vegetables, but a vegetable was an entire dice white onion and a few anemic pieces of broccoli. Definitely not worth the 4 extra dollars to add a pile of unappetizing bland onion. On top of that, the breading was so thick that it turned soggy around the shrimp and crab, and the one waster we got was filled with a disgusting seasoned mayonnaise that burst in your mouth and was wholly unappetizing.Lastly, and with all understanding for the layout and size of the restaurant, the only bathroom for the entire restaurant is a single toilet in the kitchen that also has, awkwardly, a stool sitting opposite the toilet, as if you were expecting company to come join you.Again, I cant speak to the other items on the menu and Id like to believe that their udon and ramen offerings are fantastic based on other reviews but my experience with the specific roles we purchased was disappointing.

My husband and I have been looking for a good ramen place in town for a while. Here it is! The gyoza was delicious (and only $3 between 3 and 7 pm) and we drank every drop of our miso-based ramen broth! The pork in ot was SO soft and flavorful! Love their oyster shooters--just the right size and perfect sauce. Try the fried gyoza and youll order more--again, perfect sauce. Seaweed salad is yummy as is udon soup. Taste the miso and youll be spoiled. Perfect place to introduce your friends and family to sushi at prices that are easy to digest. Great little Japanese restaurant in downtown Modesto. Their inari sushi and BBQ pork ramen were fantastic.The menu also includes some Chinese food like Orange Chicken, Sweet and Sour Beast, and Chow Mein. I have not tried any of their Chinese dishes yet, but if they are as good as the Japanese I will be very happy.As a side note: This is the only Japanese restaurant I have found that still serves Inari Sushi. Inari Sushi is a very easy sushi to make; stuff sushi rice into a tofu skin pocket. At one time it was on the menu of all Japanese restaurants but fell out of favor with the advent of West Coast/California neo-Japanese sushi rolls – the sushi rolls with avocado, nuts, and cheap imitation crab smothered in mayonnaise.
