Great service, its not even like you have your waiter, everyone was stopping, helping, bringing food asking if we need anything, and all that without being pushy or overwhelming. Protein Cucumber Roll was the best and Salmon Roll was yummy, BSCR Roll and Teriyaki Chicken was OK but not special.

Food was good. Overall staff was very accomodating and menu straight to the point. I had the lunch special, Salmon bento which comes with a miso soup. The waitress asked if I wanted tempura with with an additional $2. I was full and I got free ice-cream at the end if you do a review. With or without the free ice-cream, the assesment will be the same. The place is fairly clean. One less star only because of the restroom. It wasn’t horrible but can be cleaner. Will come by at my next opportunity.

Food is good. The soft shell crab appetizer is my favorite, super flavorful and crunchy. The agedashi tofu is alright from takeout, they leave the sauce off of the tofu, which isnt ideal. The staff is kind, and they give your order pretty quickly. They also give a free bag with your take out order, which is great! Overall, pretty good restaurant. 4/5 stars!

Ordered online, so take this review with a grain of salt. I didnt receive all of my food when comparing door dash order to restaurant ticket. Fish wasnt that good of quality. Bluefin tuna was not good quality, despite the price. Although there is a ban on plastic single-use utensils in Carlsbad, no wooder chopsticks were offered. All of the ginger received was dried out. I had Carlsbad roll and, while it was filling, it did not have any complexity to the flavor. Essentially just tasted like tempura and krab.

I’ve been there a couple of times and food and service are great. I didn’t know the name of the staff. Today i met Nathan at the testing site. He was very concerned to be able to get to work on time but the system was down most of the time. Nathan was getting tested out of precious and because his mother recommended. A young man who has civil common sense and shows respect for his mother, is an individual that any company should appreciate to have on board. I am a seasoned restaurant and retail manager, and Nathan is a great asset. I will look forward to see him again when I will come to enjoy your sushi. Thank you Nathan.

My friend and I shared 2 sushi rolls and an appetizer of chicken. We sat at the Sushi Bar. The food at Tomoyama is delicious 😋. The rolls are a generous size, flavorful and rich. One of the rolls we ordered was a lobster 🦞 roll. It did not disappoint our tastebuds. The wait staff are welcoming and helpful. We leisurely sat and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the experience. Prices at Happy Hour are amazing, best value for all the sushi places Ive ever eaten at. Building atmosphere is very cozy, lower lighting without being hard to see, friendly staff. Was caught off guard by the Disco that was someone getting their Birthday treat, but it was fun (maybe a bit too loud on the music part though). Cant stress the value enough, you get great sushi and dinner items for half the price youd pay other places during happy hour.

Very slow service and not a good customer experience! We used to frequent this place as they have delicious sushi, so I placed an online order for pickup. I went to get the order at pickup time, and they hadnt started it. I was told 10 minutes it would be ready. Unfortunately, I had to wait 40 more minutes from the original pickup time, which was over an hour from when the order was placed.

Wow! I love this Sushi restaurant, it is definitely the best place you can go in Carlsbad for sushi and worth a try if you have not been yet. Their rolls are all super fresh and amazing. The food I will give 5 stars. The service, I will give 2 stars, and overall Ill give this establishment 3 stars.Overall the food was very good. We ordered a variety of sushi, some rolls, some sashimi, and the fish was very fresh. The spicy scallops and tuna didnt seem to use msg in it, but were very delicious.Now for service. I had a 20% coupon, and I had it on the table, but forgot to give the waitress before she rang up the bill. I ordered a lot more food based on my using the 20% off coupon. I approached two waitresses asking them to please take the 20% off. Each time they said they couldnt. Sorry. In my opinion this is poor customer service. There is always a way, and to brush me off with a sorry I cant do it with this register seems like a really poor excuse to me.

This place was always on the slow side but had good sushi and prices. Theyre awful now since CV19. Twice weve ordered from them and waited over an hour to get our sushi (in addition to the 45 minutes they told us it would take to prepare it). Neither time did we actually get sushi. The lines dont move. They refuse to answer their phone. They refuse to acknowledge you if you bypass the line to ask... We like to support small businesses but encourage everyone to find their sushi elsewhere.

Ive been here many times over the last several years. The food is good and reasonably priced; there are regular mailers and discounts available. While the wait staff are friendly, there always seems to be too few of them, resulting in very poor overall service - time and time again. Previously, Ive had to request multiple times to order drinks, food, and the check. This is of course a concern if you have movie plans. Easily a three or four star place if the service issues can ever be turned around.The proximity to the theatre and value/price is the big plus to Tomoyama. If you are looking for knock your socks off sushi I recommend looking elsewhere.That said, the awesome roll, volcano roll, BSCR are all quite good and I recommend them! Im also a big fan of their garlic edamame, which is spicy and delicious.

Good food but the service is really slow. We’ve been many times and it doesn’t matter if they’re busy, slow, or order for pick up. If we dine in, the servers take a long time to come take your order. We went for dinner to this restaurant after attending a function at the Carlsbad library. We walked in and saw the restaurant has 5 large TV around the main area. We were placed in a booth right under the TV l. It was reflecting on us so we turned it off. Three employees came to turn it on (Within 1 min) and each time we asked them to leave it off. The last employee wouldn’t leave it off so we walked out. I understand having TV’s in bars and sports bars but not where people want to have dinner without the distraction of the TV.

Ive been to many sushi bars spanning 30 years...the staff and chefs here were the least friendly Ive ever experienced. We are actually quite easy to please, and not a single smile in the hour and a half we were there. The moment I stepped through that exquisitely designed door that warmly welcomes tomoyoma, my nostrils were filled with scents of crisp ocean air, bringing me back to my child hood in the Scandinavian aisles. Sushi was delish!! Young waitress that waited on me and my 2 friends was not great. I had to ask her twice for green tea, twice for fresh wasabi. She had a scowl on her face. Wasnt friendly at all. My friend wanted to order more, but she just gave us our checks without asking if we wanted anything else. She never checked on us to make sure everything was good. It was not busy at all. Sushi chef asked me how my Carlsbad roll was when I left as I tipped then but not the waitress. If it wasnt for the waitress this place would get 5 stars. The service was very poor and our server seemed upset with us. When I mentioned that I hadn’t received one of my rolls yet (after we finished the rest of our meal), she told me that it takes a while to cook. When she finally returned and saw that I still had not received the roll, she walked away from me while I was in mid-sentence. The quality of the food also seemed lacking.

Extremely expensive for the quality.None of my rolls had any uniformity to them. The lowest quality meats they could find. And most importantly I shouldnt be paying 14 dollars for a roll of sushi that is made worse than if I had made it at home as a novice.Felt bad being there with every bite.

Sushi was sub standard. When trying a new sushi place I always order yellow tail to test whether or not I will order more...I did not... I thought it would be safe to order something semi cook, a lobster volcano something with crab meat and scallops. Eeeek. I ate a quarter of it. Yellow tail, fishy, scallops, fishy (I spit it out in my napkin) even the green tea that was sent back was fishy. I will say, service was good but note for the inexperienced sushi eater, you get what you pay for. If youre not paying 8 bucks for sushi, be leary.

It has been a while since I visited Tomoyama, but decided to have dinner at the Sushi Bar. I basically ordered Omakase and let the chef do his thing.The quality of the fish was very good, especially Toro, Tuna Belly, Uni to name a view.in addition they have a really nice selection of fine Sakes, so make sure you order a good one to wash the sushi down with it.I will be back soon.

(This is from a Japanese persons point of view). 2 stars exclusively for the okay miso soup. From the start I ordered a hot green tea, and it came as a mug of hot water and a teabag. NO remotely respectable Japanese establishment would ever serve tea like this. Our waitress was extremely rude, rushing us and blatantly ignoring our orders. Never made eye contact and seemed rushed (in an empty restaurant). My friend ordered ramen and the first thing we got back was a blatant you know its packaged ramen right?. Uttelry confused he decided not to order. I got a donburi rice bowl, and the rice was soaked and soggy, pork was cold and hard, and the only vegetables were the stumps of broccoli. Overall food is 2 stars, service is what got them a $0.05 tip.

I ordered take out from tomoyama delivered by a 3rd party co which i have used many times. The review is correct in focusing on this restaurant. First, the food was completely cold when it arrived. I ordered $70.00 dollars worth of teriyaki chicken, beef, and salmon. This was a dinner order so the portions should be between 6- 8 ounces. ( I was lead in seafood restaurant ) it arrived much smaller and presentation was poor, no teriyaki sauce on the chicken or salmon just grilled. And the beef dish was stir fried!. Fried calamari was completely cold and the tempura of shrimp, and veg. did not have a dipping sauce. I also ordered extra ca rolls which were plan without taste.The only thing I really enjoyed was the miso soup.. Sorry but I really do like this type of food (usually)

My gf and I have tried a few different sushi places around Carlsbad ie. Hooked on sushi, Hanna, sushi on the edge. To name a few and Tomoyama is the best by far their rolls are very reasonably priced during happy hour (3:30 - 5:30) and the rolls are way more than just your basic spicy tuna or Philadelphia.
