This place seriously never disappointsIt was a hot day but their fish was super fresh. This is really important to me since Im pregnant right now and can only eat a selection of fish and everything we had was super fresh and clean.Their servers are all very attentive even though theyre usually super busy. They stopped by multiple times to check if we need anything, refilled our water without us having to ask, etc.They have a huge parking lot too.

Wow. We were not expecting such a great value for money sushi joint that is quite upscale in the East Bay. The interior is somewhat modern yet showing a bit of cost-consciousness. Its clean. Its pleasant.Food is quite good in many ways. Nothing truly blows you away but everything is way above average. The sushi is quite fresh. The hwoe-dup-bap plentiful and generous. Tonkatsu is well done. A great place all around. But then there comes the reasonable price and makes you truly appreciate Ukai at a whole another level.Locals love it. The visitors love it. Will return when around.

Really enjoyable dinner here. Nigiri pieces fresh and delicious, sushi rolls excellent size, and spicy beef dish with the dinner combo was out of control good. I’ve had spicy in my day and this was one of the spicier dishes I’ve had. Still, the flavor was so amazing it didn’t stop me. Can’t wait to return!

This place is a gem. Found it randomly after a hike in the area.Walk in and immediately get transferred into an authentic Japanese restaurant. We came for a late lunch. The fish was so fresh! Every sushi roll melted in your mouth. Staff was attentive. Highly recommend.We had a few rolls and our favorites we’re the cherry blossom, hurricane, and lion king.

Overall fantastic experience every time. The food is great, the service is exceptional (especially Kate, Rika and the younger gentleman). This is a neighborhood favorite, and I’m so grateful this restaurant is a few mins from home. No matter the occasion, Ukai does not disappoint!! Highly recommend for folks who value quality Japanese food. The sushi is fire, the karaage is perfect, the oysters are so fresh, and the sake is great. All in all, this is a wonderful restaurant for families, date night, or even a quiet solo meal.

Lunch special price is great! And super yum too. The spicy beef reminds of Korean spicy pork and the tempura is nice and fluffy. The rainbow roll has a good ratio of avocado to crab salad. The potatoes croquettes and agedaahi tofu were hot and perfectly made. High recommended!

Im not a big sushi eater but this place was pretty good. They have a large selection of items to choose from for both raw and cooked sushi eaters. The appetizers were okay as well. I would go back even as a non sushi eater. I cant tell you what we ordered but as you can see we had a lot. Apparently all were good. I stuck with the cooked shrimp roll.

The food was delicious! The Baby Lobster Roll and the Ukai Roll were a little different from the typical fare you would get from a standard Japanese place. The Baked Avocado was a pleasant surprise too! Well be back for a huge birthday party next week.

Best lunch bento combo Ive had in the Bay Area. I think the Madagascar roll was supposed to be spicy, and though it wasnt spicy at all it was still good. The spicy karaage and the spicy tuna from the combo had the kick I needed.

Came by for a quick lunch with my friend during the weekday. Only a few empty tables were left inside. Nice atmosphere and music. Ordered the lunch chicken katsu and Chefs choice Nigiri that came with a side salad & California roll. Nigiri took a bit long to come out which cut into my lunch hour from work, but other than that the food was fresh and the katsu portion was a decent size (enough to take home). Very happy with the food overall. Will be back again!

Good service and nice atmosphere, however the food wasnt great. We had the dinner special, one with spicy spicy chicken and tempura, and the other with saba shioyaki and potato croquette, and we also ordered the Madagascar roll. The miso soup that came with the special was a little salty, possibly because of the bonito flakes added to it. The tempura was inconsistently cooked (batter either soft or overfried), and the saba was overcooked. Spicy chicken was a little too spicy but bearable and the croquettes were pretty good. The Madagascar roll was unique and tasty and I would recommend it (however caution as it has macadamia nuts). Overall it was a good dining experience, I would recommend rolls over the set meals if you choose to go here.

Nice atmosphere and good service. Its a bit hidden inside next to Lins. Looks like a newly remodeled and just opened not long ago. We had a reservation and was seated immediately. Sashimi looks fresh and I didnt have stomach problems. 😁 Sushi rolls are not bad but could be better. Lots of options to choose thought. Udon is ok. The steak dinner was good. Will come back again.

Great place for lunch! Came here on a weekday - their lunch specials are reasonable in price and I like that it’s a bit different from typical places. I chose the spicy chicken and tempura. I had a wonderful experience at this Japanese restaurant. The bento combo was generous and satisfying, with a variety of dishes to choose from. I had garlic edamame, vegetable tempura and the sashimi combo. The food was average. I do wish I had tried the ramen, but Ill have to try that next ykme. The veggie Tempura was good but the garlic edamame didnt really have a good kick, I expected it to also be a little more roasted, but it seemed cold and bland to me.The sashimi was appetizing, but wasnt anything that blew me away.Overall seating was easy, staff were attentive and the location was relatively easy to get too.

They were cut smaller than I usually see, but I actually prefer this. The chirashi bowl could use more rice, it was barely 3 tablespoons. But it was lunch, and Im kinda fat, so maybe they were doing me a favor.

Went here for lunch today with my family, and was somewhat disappointed. The waitress we got was a bit unfriendly. The food we got was OK. The tempura was too heavily coated with the batter, and didn’t get much taste of the shrimp. Though the miso soup and chirashi were appetizing. The restaurant was ok overall but didnt stand out in any way. The food was good but we found the restaurant setup unfavorable with take out preparation taking up most of the main room. The place we got was close to the door and we had a cold wind every time someone opened the door, which was often as they also had outdoor seating. Despite the food being ok, I felt it was a bit pricey for the presentation and seating arrangements. Probably wont be going out of my way to come back.

Expected so much more predicated on the reviews. Appetizers were good..main courses lacked quality tastes. Service was somewhat in disarray. Both of our main courses sat on the counter for a while awaiting waitress while she handled incoming customers. We finally got the attention of 1 other waiter who brought our food when we told him it was setting on the counter. Rice was only warm on both plates, the tempura was heavily coated in whatever they use. Not like a light coating of panko. The chicken teriyaki was overcooked and dry. Having lived in Japan for many years and enjoying a variety of good Japanese restaurants, giving 3 stars is a push.

Ukai Bistro is one of my all time favorite Japanese restaurants. Its bright and delightful dining experience with some of the unique dishes makes it an absolute enjoyable place to dine in. The sushi is wonderful, and the other entrees such as chicken katsu and chicken teriyaki are my favorites. Oyster and sashimi are delicious! The char siu miso ramen was good but I wish the soup was hotter. The rare sparkling sake was delicious. The clerk was friendly and welcoming.

The sashimi is high quality and delicious for the price! The waitress is kind and quick to respond. The atmosphere of the shop is also good, so it is even more recommended!
