I had been here before the pandemic and it was pretty good. My most recent trip was a very different experience. The food wasnt too bad but the service definitely degraded. Had to ask for things repeatedly, rarely got water refills, and this was when it wasnt even that busy. The worst thing though is the half off menu. They jacked the prices up to about $25 per roll and said they are half off. The premium rolls are only a couple dollars more per roll! Its a very blatant marketing gimmick but at least now I know. I get the pandemic has made things more difficult but the half off menu really peeved me. It has a nice interior and atmosphere though.

The music is the best part! 70s funk and 80s hits! Place is getting old, broken and chipped plates are still in use.Good flavor, but I think they use too much krab meat and rely on sauces more than fish flavor. Great teas and beer, nevertheless Need to up the desserts. No tempura ice cream!

Went there yesterday evening around 5:45 and had a really good time. The restaurant was Lively crowded but my experience was good. I enjoyed the sushi I had the Hawaiian is the spicy one and the crunch roll that also is really good. And for dessert I had the tiramisu. I will definitely go back its very happy with my experience

Ordered a Curry Katsu and rice for $15.95+tipsto go around 6:09 pm. When we go home 7:45pm, my son told me the Katsu was notchewable. I tasted it, it was really hard to bite. Itis worse than jerky. I called the restaurantaround 8:30 pm. They put me on hold back nforth multiple times. The lady eventually toldme they will make a new one and asked me topick up. I told her I dont want to go out again,could they offer refund or partial refund.Surprisingly, she told me firmly they dont dorefund. What a nice customer service. Surewe will never go there again. Good luck for thiskind of customer service attitude.

I havent been here in a long time, after a bad experience with freshness.That was 6+ years ago. I believe there might have been a management change.Now they have the place remodeled, the staff is absolutely great. The sushi chefs are on-it with accuracy and time.They have a lot of the same rolls I love, with some new/revamped rolls as well.Highly recommend the Panda, Lemon and Kelly rolls!We got so excited that we ordered too much and had to call in a friend for back up! Lol

This has got to be some of the BEST sushi I have ever had. The sashimi cuts are THICC and lean. All the rolls are well put together and don’t fall apart when you dip them in soy. I’ve had the shashito peppers and calamari apps, both are grade A. This place is so good it makes me wonder why people even waste time cooking fish in real life. I found this place about two weeks ago and I’ve already been 6 times at least. I lost count. I’ll be back.

This was by far the best sushi experience Ive ever had in my life! We had Matthew as our server and I cant tell you what a pleasure it was to chat with him and what he added not only to our day but also to the meal. It was a little busy and yet he always had a smile and took time to connect with us. As if we were really special! We didnt have to wait or ask for anything! He introduced us to some new flavors. His recommendations were on point. He knows his stuff! You can tell he loves his line of work. I cannot believe such a gem is tucked away in this little strip mall in San Marcos! Matthew alone was worth every minute and every dime! However the food was also so delicious! It was fresh, it looked beautiful and we left feeling extremely full, (we ended up having to take some home) not only physically but also in spirit. There wasnt one thing that didnt taste great. We will definitely be back and if I had it my way I would never go anywhere else for sushi.

I dont understand how this place is so highly rated. Maybe from a few years ago? I came here five years ago and honestly liked it a lot, so I figured it would still be good. Philadelphia hand roll, lemon roll, baked salmon, eel handroll, salmon skin. The salmon skin was just super oily, over fried. The Philadelphia roll has a huge square chunk of cream cheese. The others had too much sauce. Like, I get it, we got the ingredients listed in the menu, but it seems like theres no care to how much they use of anything, and some of it ended up honestly gross as a result. At BEST it was alright. The staff was very jumbled and all over, but it didnt seem that busy. Everyone was our server, and it seemed like there was no communication between them, which added to a chaotic feeling. Im honestly the last person to care about conventional service, all of them seemed almost embarrassed. Maybe they knew something was wrong? It was very strange. Maybe this isnt normal, but this experience just sat weird.

So good! 8 on a Friday night. Plenty of parking. A host greeted us and held the door for us when we arrived. They were busy, but sat us immediately. A few different servers checked in with us prior to, and during our meal. The sushi nigiri was very high quality and had amazing flavor. The rolls did not have so much rice that it drowns out the flavors. My only criticism is that so many of the rolls rely on imitation crab for the filling.

What an absolutely incredible experience from start to finish. My partner and I came in for lunch today because we heard about their 50% Roll Specials (theres about two dozen choices!). We had the Dragon, the Kelly (I had to lol) and the Ninja. Every roll was extremely high quality with plenty of content in every bite.Our server Matthew was on top of everything not just for us but for almost everyone in the restaurant! If you want above and beyond service at a fair price, be there on Saturday and Sunday during the day or Tuesday and Wednesday night. Matthew has got you covered.We will DEFINITELY be coming back again. I hope you check out Umai, they deserve your support.

Absolutely garbage, rice was like Mexican white rice, the fish seemed old, we requested some Siracha or Chile oil sauce they didn’t have any, I told them to bring me a fresh slice jalapeño to add on my sushi but they told me it was extra charge. I told them no thank you but they brought me some hot wing sauce instead.

This is where we get our Ramen fix!The Miso Ramen is so flavorful. Its a bowl of deliciousness made with lots of fresh ingredients and careful preparation.Im not a fan of sushi rolls with Krab. When I do indulge in sushi, I always order the Hawaiian Cruise roll, with real crab!Outstanding!The atmosphere is comfortable, but the music can be a little loud.The staff are very friendly. You are always greeted when you walk through the front entrance.

Enoc is our sushi chef. He has many many years of experience and is such a valued asset to this restaurant. He learns what his regular customers enjoy and has personable skills that top all others. My mom and I came here for an early dinner (5:15pm). There was a little bit of a wait but the host was friendly and kept us informed. This wasnt our first time and wont be the last time. We have loved this place since 2015. We are a military family and got stationed in NY from 2018-2021. We just came back to the SD area and today we went back to Umai Sushi and it is still AMAZING. Fresh and flavorful and isnt insanely expensive like other sushi places that over charge you for just decent sushi. We love this place. Clean and staff is very friendly.

The sushi rolls here are pretty good. If you like eel I would highly the Dragon roll. They have half price rolls, but they just jacked up the price to double and then sell it to you for the normal amount....not my favorite business plan. The service....not great. Id definitely eat here again, but probably just order for pick-up instead of dining in.

Great sushi, have eaten here 4 times. Usually good service. Had an allergic reaction to their deep friend great tea dessert due to walnuts, and had no warning. If my allergy was worse it could have hurt me and or someone else terribly. Very negligent and unresponsible. My whole mouth is in pain and swollen. Will not be coming here again after that incident. Also nothing was done after I voiced the problem.

We have loved this place since it opened. The quality is great and the service has always been ok. But we were there Friday night 10/22/21 and I just felt like I needed to make everyone aware that they need to wear warm clothes. Bring a big jacket, or blanket. They keep the door propped completely open the entire time. So it litterally felt like we were in a refrigerator. We were freezing! If covid is the reason. Thats silly. Dont offer inside seating when it feels like were outside.

First, I have eaten here many times in the past 4 years. But, this evening I was disappointed by the loud music, not great for conversations, the ok sushi, and saddened by the lack of assistance by the Management. I purchased a special deal certificate for $30.00 worth of Sushi. I have used these certificates in the past with no problem. However, although the current certificate had expired the $18.00 I paid is clearly stated on the certificate that it will be honored and never expires.I was informed by the manager that they will no longer take this certificate for my meal. I was very polite in asking for them to just honor the base amount paid, I was fine with the $30.00 not able to be applied. But, nope they would not honor the $18.00 toward the bill.So, I will not be back, I will not support them and again very sad that a great restaurant is now loud, TVs turned up and service gone down !

My wife was given the most dirtiest glass for her beer that Ive ever seen in my life. I spoke to the waitress and she did give my wife a new beer and a new glass even though it was the size of an infants glass probably about the size of three shots. So I guess this place doesnt having any glasses or they just dont feel like washing them. There anyway Im a little annoyed that the beer wasnt at least free and there was no apology given which of course spurred me to leave no tip which I never do. I would stay away from this place and go to maybe I Love sushi over on Los Posas. If we cant keep our dishes clean why are we even serving people...

The food was ok but the service was terribleOur server brought our cokes we ordered and they were diet drinks rather than regular. She gave us huge attitude. She said someone had mistakenly put diet soda in place of regular but they fixed it. She was mad because we could taste it. Then she brought fresh drinks but we could still taste the diet chemicals. Another sweet waitress came and took them away while the other waitress continued with her attitude. I will never go back to be so mistreated over a coke.

I have been coming here for 7 years and the sushi is ALWAYS good. Ive never been disappointed, the whole menu is good you really cant go wrong. Ive even thrown a few birthday parties here for me and my friends and my girlfriend. Service is excellent and the waiters/waitresses are always friendly. The best part is how affordable the food is for such excellent quality. I highly disagree with any negative reviews of this place. I listed my name as public to prove Im not the owner . I found this place 6 years ago when it had recently opened, and despite working in downtown sd, I wish I could come up here for lunch, its the best tasting, most consistent sushi Ive ever had. Ive had better sushi randomly, but this place is consistently great. The rolls are the correct size, and you dont almost choke on them trying to fit them in your mouth, and they dont skimp on fish. This place has some mixed reviews so I figured it could go either way. Theyre currently under construction so the entrance was a little harder to see initially. They seemed to have an okay selection of rolls. I had a couple rolls with a salmon nigiri. The salmon portion was really lacking, comparing it to just about every other place Ive been. The rolls were on okay portion and the flavor was also just alright. Nothing jumped out at me as either great or bad, but I wouldnt return. Half price sounds great, but it seems like the portion size fits the overall pricing. And the flavor is just kind of plain.

Had lunch w a good friend every Friday there for about a year. I still go there every now and then. I used to love this place, the servers were attentive, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was pleasant. I dont know if its the new management but this place isnt what it used to be.About 2 weeks ago, I met with the same friend, we had to inquire who our server was, that is not good. Everything went downhill from there, but made the best of it once our sushi was served but the experience was aggravating.Today, I had dinner there with my 7 yr old daughter. There were 3 obnoxious male guest dining across the room. I politely asked our server to tell them to turn it down a few notches and it was obvious I wasnt the only guest that was annoyed. I believe the server and the Owner were intimidated by these men. I walked over to the table and politely asked them myself to please lower their voices as I, like many others around me are trying to have an enjoyable evening with our family. Needless to say they were wasted and pathetic individuals. They finally left after another guest threatened to call the police. Guest that were barely seated were walking out. This was ridiculous, whats next??!! (2 stars for the sushi)

Second time here. First was take out but not impressed. Today 4 of us dined in. We had 7 of their 50% rolls and they were great, a salmon bento box which was perfect.Service was friendly but hectic, not unusual for sushi restaurant.Table was missing some dishes, plates etc.Brought 17 month old grandson who needed a high chair. The 1st had a missing strap, the 2nd had a broken latch.Interesting roll combinations. Would definitely go back!

Messed up our order and tried to blame us. Wife and I ordered 4 different sushi rolls and 2 chicken teriyaki bowls. Guy behind the counter then repeated our order back to us and I confirmed. We pull our food out and realize the teriyaki doesnt look or smell like teriyaki, I check the receipt and see that they somehow gave us curry. They also gave me a salmon skin roll instead of a salmon roll. Again which he didnt repeat back to me. He said salmon roll. We then called to try and get a partial refund simply for the items that were wrong. They first tried to tell us they dont serve curry, to which we had reiterated that we got curry. He then said that they could remake the items. Which we would take-up had it not involved a 1 hour round trip. We simply asked for a partial refund to which we were told they could only give us a credit under my name. We dont ever plan on going back here.

The sushi was actually way better than I expected. Better than much more expensive places Ive been to in La Jolla, Solana Beach, and Carlsbad. THIS PLACE HAS THE WORST SERVICE!!! We had a party of 20, and they were ok with separate checks. BUT 1 hr later the only thing we had on the table was drinks. We had kids with that were starving! Finally after the long wait, the adults got their rolls first BUT the kids chicken still hadnt been out yet!! Other families there had gotten there, ate and left and were still sitting there. Horrible experience ! Will not be going back!

I am a sushi lover. After reading the good reviews, I brought my family to eat here for the first time. What a disappointment!As we were walking in, there were two young men sitting and standing right by the entrance watching us walk in. They were clearly sushi chefs, but no greeting. Just staring like those punk kids who hang out around liquor store. This made my wife very uncomfortableSushi were small portioned and not authentic. Plates were dirty. They looked like they were just wiped with a dirty towel (I could see smears of grease or whatever it was). Edges of plates had broken off and had jagged edges. The service is ok, I think with any sushi place they are usually quite busy with not even front of house staff but the food is stellar so I keep coming back.
