Urban Momos in San Mateo is a hidden gem of a restaurant that delivers an authentic taste of Nepali cuisine. Despite its size, this place packs a flavorful punch. During my visit, I ordered a trio of dishes – momos, chowmein, and bhuteko bhaat (fried rice). The momo sauce was a revelation; it had a tangy twist, likely from the addition of lapsi, a sour Nepali fruit. The Szechuan flavor in their sauce was a delightful surprise, elevating the taste to another level. The staff at Urban Momos are not only friendly but also impressively quick, ensuring a smooth dining experience. However, parking in the bustling area of San Mateo can be a bit challenging, so plan accordingly.Dont leave without trying their Chiya Nepali tea, which adds a perfect ending to your meal. Its important to note that their food leans towards the spicier side, so if you have a low tolerance for heat, dont hesitate to let them know when ordering.Overall, Urban Momos is a place I would gladly return to when in town. The wonderful flavors, friendly staff, and unique Nepali offerings make it a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic culinary adventure.

I’ve gotten takeout here once before and finally got a chance to dine in. The food definitely tastes a lot better fresh. The decor and service both feel more like a mom and pop shop.We got the aloo gobi, chili chicken, butter paneer curry, chicken biryani and garlic naan. The garlic naan was one of the best I’ve had in the Bay Area, it was crispy and fluffy. The chicken biryani was good but I felt like they didn’t cut the chicken properly - I bit into a few really small bone pieces which kinda ruined the experience.I really enjoyed the butter paneer curry, which was very well flavoured.Aloo gobi was okay but it felt like the portion was small for the price and they did not put much cauliflower in it.The chili chicken was good, better than the one at Samichka but nothing to write home about.Definitely will come back to try some other dishes.

An unassuming place along the main stretch in San Mateo with a ton of restaurants, we walked in because Indo Chinese food sounded interesting. The service is minimal but not unfriendly so dont expect too much in that aspect. The menu is pretty good with explanations so you dont need to sit there and Google every single item if youre as unfamiliar with Nepalese food as I am. I was most excited to try the momos but we ordered a bunch of things to share!Mixed Bhuteko Bhat: Nepali fried rice with egg, vegetable and chicken. This was so good!!! There was wok hei, that fragrance you get in stir fried items that has had enough heat applied. I was stunned that I had to go to a Nepalese place to get that but it was so good. The chicken wasnt too dry, and I have no complaints about the frozen vegetables used in this. We polished off the whole plate.Lamb Choila: this is like lamb skewers that are then stir fried in a sauce, then served with crispy naan crumbs and crunchy soybeans. The lamb was pretty gamey so I wasnt a huge fan but the use of texture in the dish was very interesting.Chicken Momos: these were delicious and stuffed full of meat! The chicken filling was very well spiced and seasoned and went great with the two sauces they provided (one was chilli and one was a cumin tasting sauce). The dumplings were also very juicy and came very hot.Gobi Manchurian: I love this usually, but this had a goopier sauce than I would normally like and the batter was very thick. The flavor of the sauce was pretty good, nicely sour, sweet and a tiny bit spicy. The cauliflower was nice and soft but I wish the batter was crisper. My favorite items were the bhuteko bhat and momos, Id return just for those two items. They were doing a brisk takeout business and l can see why!

There are a lot of vegetarian options available. We tried chill paneer momo, shezwan chowmein, and Gobi manchurian bhat bowl. The soda Pani is a must try!The chili panner momo was okay, the taste is kind of bland and momo itself is chewy. The gobi Manchurian bhat was probably the best off the 3. Again rice is kind of bland, but Manchurian is good. The chowmein was the worst of the 3, it did not taste anything like chowmein nor had any schezwan flavors. But the staff is very kind and friendly!

Finally found a no frills restaurant in San Mateo. Absolutely delicious food! We got the chicken manchurian. It was so tender and flavorful. We also got the aloo gobi and it was the best I have eaten. I like how the cauliflower wasnt mushy and it was packed with flavor. The garlic naan was fluffy and complemented the dishes perfectly. Will be coming back for more.

Ordered chili paneer bowl, momos, paneer curry and dal tadka. Food was good tasting but little on the spicier side so need to inform them before hand if spice is an issue. Will definitely go again. The dishes especially starters have nice indo chinese flavor to it.

The food is good in general. The must try are vegan momos. The chicken chilly was tender. They do have good paneer chilly momos.

10/10 the best Nepalese food around. Amazing freshly made food, top notch service. One of the chefs has climbed Everest 7 times! We recently ordered takeout and they remembered our names from our order and gave us free fried rice! Come on, what more could you ask for!
