Ordered several food items to kind of keep the family satiated until we could get home for dinner. Ended up getting two burgers some tacos and a pumpkin stew inspired by African cuisine. Everything was pretty good. The burgers were definitely good and the fries were great. The stew was really really delicious the tacos were good but I probably wouldnt get those again. One thing I didnt like was the gentleman making the food was not wearing gloves but besides that I would definitely go here again.

Tasty all-vegan food in a local food court. The tacos were quite tasty, and the peanut stew was very filling and full of flavor, if a bit unbalanced (very rich and earthy but could have used some cilantro or lemon juice to balance it out). But good, healthy, creative fare.

I ordered their Suya burger. It was very well made, and the touch of spicy mushrooms added a lot of flavor. Definitely recommend anyone who likes to try a simple yet delicious vegan burger. The restaurant itself is located among many other restaurants and bars with a central seating location to enjoy the music during weekends. Absolutely ❤️ it!

My roommate caught a picture of me eating my burger and this was the resultNot even lying, this was the best veggie burger I’ve ever had. I had it as is (which is astonishing because I like to ask for a lot of stuff taken off… a little picky sometimes) and let me just say, this became my favorite restaurant in the area. It was so good! I am Gonna stop by every time I come around! 10/10 would highly recommend. The service was amazing. The quality was amazing. Everything tasted so good. I would’ve eaten a second one right then and there. I should’ve taken an extra to go. They are doing amazing!

The Veg Edge was exactly what we needed! A super healthy restaurant with food that is delicious and filling for a reasonable price. We were able to meet the owner’s son and he gave us a great experience at this shop. We loved how the dishes were authentic West African and had vegan ingredients. We can’t wait to come back and try more of the items on the menu!

This spot is a hidden gem. Its self-service, the prices are affordable, quality is well above average and the portions are amazing. The Beyond Burger I had was grilled nicely and was topped with bbq jackfruit and fresh onions. I also ordered the cassava fries, and although there were only 5, they were thicker than usual and hot out of the fryer. Altogether this meal was 🔥.

It’s really hard to find a vegetarian menu with African food, but this spot fits the bill and is so tasty! I got the fried plantains which were delicious and generously seasoned, and the taco with mushroom suya which was just the right amount of food as a snack and had such colorful and fun toppings. The service was awesome and employees were so kind — I’ll be back whenever I’m in town!

The West African dishes are super delicious, fresh, healthy, but most importantly it feels homemade with love. Its not always easy to find real food that is different from the usual and that sits well in my stomach. Plus, the owner is such a sweetheart! Even my baby loved him. I cant wait to try new west african dishes in the future!

The food wasnt bad, but wouldnt repeat especially at the price.Veggie burger + taco + fries for $29.While the worker rung us up, he pulled out his phone reading his texts.. then he came back to us and said sorry. A bit odd because he took my order and then I pulled out my card and he pulled out his phone. Im just watching him read his texts.Sanitation - Issue is not about covid, it always bugs me when workers handle the cash register then start touching the food without washing in between. Maybe normal in Santa Cruz, but both the worker and manager didnt wash their hands and touched our food. Manager literally came back from somewhere outside and started touching our burger with his bare hands.No napkins or utencils were given to us. No hand sanitizers so you want to wash your hands? The bathroom doors are locked too.

As a vegan family we are always looking for a new place to eat. We have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while and even though they have a very limited menu, we decided to give it a try.We ordered a Malibu Burger, a western burger, french fries, potato balls, and tofu wrap. The burgers used beyond meat patties and they tasted good. The problem is but they have no ice for water so In The Heat Of Summer eating hot food and drinking warm water is not very pleasant. The other issue is that they dont carry ketchup for the french fries. When I asked about this they said its because the food is of an African influence. Please explain how does a Malibu and western burgers fit into to this menu. Im not complaining Im just saying ketchup is cheap. Put a bottle of ketchup and make it possible to people please.The potato balls were yummy and the tufu wrap was a bit dry.Lastly we had to get our French fries to go because they were under cook and so they had to cook them further.All in all the food was just ok, but definitely not worth the almost $50 dollars we had to pay.

I want Veg on the Edge to be successful.The owner is incredibly kind.When they first opened I would have given them 5 stars. They had a red stew-type dish that was amazing that’s no longer on the menu.The problems:1. They are out of a lot—& a lot of the time.2. Mostly rice.3. Case in point:Today, with their new wraps menu, my friend got the marinated tofu quinoa wrap.Exhibit A: They were out of quinoa; brown rice it is. Wrap delivered—no tofu & two dime-sized squares of red peppers (the menu leads you to believe there are all kinds of veggies in the wrap).Exhibit B: The whole wrap was brown rice. The guy even tried to front like, “there’s tofu in there.” Friend said, “I’m happy to be wrong;” opened the wrap; all contents fell out; zero tofu. So the guy took the plate and put 3 pieces of tofu on top of the now inside out wrap.This felt like an extreme version of typical Veg on the Edge. Out of items. Mostly rice.$10.25 (not including tip and tax) per wrap.45% spinach tortilla45% rice10% essence and color of other vegetables or proteinFor the record, I had the Suya wrap and it was also mostly tortilla and rice (pic is of 1/2 the Suya wrap)I can’t wait to update this review and give them 5 stars. Come here for some amazing west African vegan cuisine! 5 stars for the food and service. Love this place and will definitely come back. When we are in the area. I got the grilled pepper plantains (which are to die for!) and the beyond meat bbq burger. Very unique flavors with quality and special seasonings and sauces. Doesn’t taste like any beyond burger I have had before! 🎉 the menu was great they had lots of options and would be a great place to take non vegans as well. Keep it up.

Tried to order a veggie taco and said it would take over 30 minutes, so I decided on cassava fries and peppered plantains. They were out of a frozen plastic bag then reheated. $5.25 for a total of 7 fries seems steep. They were sort of crunchy but some werent done in the middle. The peppered plantains were decent.

My husband and I stumbled upon Veg on the Edge tonight while downtown Santa Cruz looking for dinner. We were immediately greeted by the owner with a warm smile. We asked what his favorite dish was and he said the pumpkin seed stew but that it takes a while to make it (because he actually makes it from scratch after you order it!). We had time so ordered it along with some cassava fries and a bowl to hold us over. The food was SOOOO good. So much flavor, unique flavor. I cannot recommended this place more. We will certainly be back.

What a (bad) experience/place. I ordered, gave a small tip, and waited.. And waited.After a while, the lady working there said she didnt start the grill so the only thing made after about 25-30min were the fries. I ended up having to cancel the order, paid for fries and left annoyed. I looked at my card statement to verify I wasnt charged for the full order only to see that I paid $10 for dry fries because she kept the tip.Good luck ever seeing me come back to this place and Ill forever talk trash about it just to be petty.

Bought food to go and the employee selected his own tip as soon as that option came on the screen after I had inserted my card. I don’t mind tipping, but employees should not tip themselves with a customer’s card. This can become an unauthorized transaction. Please train your staff to do better than this.On top of that, I noticed some poor customer service when another customer asked for their food to be remade.Overall not a good experience at all.

Went in for 2 salads. One regular and one was a Beet & arugla salad. I waited over 25 minutes for 2 salads. It was around 1:30pm when I went, but them being a little busy wasnt the reason for the delay. It was lack of communication. I looked over to the counter and seen 2 boxes. So I went up to the counter and asked if those boxes were mine. They stated yes, but that they were all out of Beets. They stated that they went to the store to get more and they were just waiting on them to return with the beets. That made me frustrated because I basically wasted my lunch break waiting on Beets that I didnt even get. They ended up adding Tempe on the best salad. Tempe was not good at all. Then the regular salad that I got for my co-worker didnt even have dressing on it or in the box. It looks as though they just threw the ingredients in there and boxed it up in a rush.

Came to celebrate my Birthday with my family and stopped by to take a look at this restaurant and try out the Ethiopian food. Had the Pumpkin Stew, one of the traditional Ethiopian dish, which had a very rich, nutty flavor, very healthy and delicious dish!! A MUST try!! Shitake Suya Bowl was also another incredible dish! Need yo go through entire menu! 😜The owner was incredibly friendly, very curteous and to our suprise a great polyglot! I was very happy with my visit and will return to visit again!

I really, really want to give higher points, we need more food diversity and options in this county. I will keep holding out for hope that things improve, unless this was just an extremely odd and rare instance.A few weeks ago I ordered the tofu black rice bowl, first time was excellent, very filling with great taste, and the ratios and overall amount was just perfect. Second time I went this past Sunday, I wanted to try the shiitake súyà bowl, but was told that they ran out of shiitake. At 11:30am. Nevermind that there was a pile of chopped up shiitake on the cutting board. Oookay, guess Ill order the tofu black rice bowl again, because practically everything else on the menu was out. At 11:30am.Good grief, the amount of rice was 2-3x as much as the first time, and there was so. much. oil. I couldnt finish it like I could the first time around in one sitting because of it and the disproportionately insane amount of rice. There was barely any sauce on top of the tofu. I opened it up the next day to eat the leftovers, all of the oil had completely saturated the already sparse lettuce, same thing happened to the rice. Im so disappointed, I dont know whether the two staff members there need better training or what.

The burgers are SO delicious, and the sauces really add a lot of flavor. I tried the cassava fries, and theyre well cooked and crispy, super tasty. The wraps are dry and not very flavorful(way too much rice) and could be served with a side salad or slaw to make them better. At least extra sauces. Overall, really high quality food with good ingredients being used, but overpriced for the small portion sizes.

Ive been coming here on and off for a few months. The customer service is always superb. The man I believe to be the owner always is so cheery. He loves talking about the food. their food is consistently delicious. I started eating here when I was vegan, but even back to pescatarian diet Ive found their food one of the best choices around. I highly suggest for everyone. You cant find nicer, more genuine, and wholesome of a place than this :)

The Pumpkin Seed stew was unbelievably delicious, my friend and I both ordered it today at the newly opened location in San Luis Obispo and were blown away. There are unique and balanced flavors, making everything I had so very satisfying. I tried the OBE EPA, peanut stew; and side tofu. The thick stew is a classic West African dish that ive tried before, and was so pleased with how authentic and robust the flavor was. Served with rice and fresh mixed greens and veggies; made for a perfect combination of textures. Tried it out... seemed overpriced. The potato balls were interesting. My wife had the fries but they werent crunchy more limp and oily. No one manned the counter when I arrived almost didnt order anything. After calling the number listed I waited a bit longer and then someone finally showed up. Didnt really behave eager or friendly to me, Which is a huge let down. For what they charge I would expect them to be very enthusiastic about any customer placing an order. Ah well dont think Ill be back.

I used to work across the street from this place and I went many times for lunch. I love that it’s all vegan and I can try a different item each time! Not a great experience. I ordered the rather expensive Beyond Meat burger for takeaway with fries. Apparently they were out of fries so they offered me sweet potatoes, to which I agreed. After a very long wait (20 minutes?) for a simple burger, the buzzer finally rang and I went in to get my meal. They apologized because they accidentally rang my buzzer and my meal wasnt ready. Now, that can happen of course. But when the buzzer went off again a few minutes later, my burger was ready, but apparently they had run out of sweet potatoes as well... Oh, and it was served on a plate, instead of takeout.. I did get my money back for the fries (or any other kind of potatoes) I never got, but overall the experience was unsatisfactory. The freshly prepared burger tasted good but was far from special and not worth its price.

So glad we tried this much anticipated restaurant in Abbott Square next to the museum. We went overboard and shared several meals. I especially loved the shiitake fried black rice and the arugula pesto salad. The owners and staff are super friendly and strive hard to offer quality vegan food. Wow! What a hidden treat. The chef is from Nigeria and makes some amazing West African dishes with vegan alternatives. Quite filling for one person and extremely flavorful. The name could do with some improvement to hint at a more African theme but I would definitely go back. We have driven here twice & have been unable to try the food. Posted hours say they close at 8, but when we showed up just after 7pm, there was a sign up that said “closed for prep.” Both times, it was a wasted trip & we had to eat elsewhere. This place may have been great had they not royally screwed up my order. Like many vegan restaurants, they seem to think that just being vegan is enough, as if food quality doesnt matter and sensitivities dont exist. Unfortunately, I was sick for the entire day after eating hidden cayenne in a dish that I requested be cooked with nothing but olive oil. I was recently in the Bay Area and had the opportunity to eat at Veg on the Edge. I could not have had a better experience. My dad and I went together and our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs!We tried the Thai Peanut Wrap, The Shiitake Suya Burger, Potato Balls, Plantain Fries and the Roasted-Beet Arugula Salad. We finished everything off with some Dark Chocolate Delights, and washed everything down with a few of their sparkling juices as well. Everything was so delicious!Im not a vegan, and I can honestly say that I didnt miss the meat or dairy. The flavors are all wonderful and so well balanced that you arent left craving anything else.While I really loved everything, I think the major star for me was the Shiitake Suya Burger. I had never tried suya before and really loved it!I highly recommend checking this place out. The outdoor seating area is an awesome place to relax, eat some great food, and catch up with even better people!

A few nights ago Santa Cruz Vegans had our meet-up at VEG-ON-THE-EDGE, a delicious, savory, sweet, vegan, kosher, organic, restaurant with West African influences which sparkles with cleanliness. I ordered the Black Rice & Sausage Bowl which was fabulously satisfying, perfect in every way, the flavors fused together in harmony, theres nothing I would have changed about the dish. The woman across from me ordered the Spicy Sausage Quinoa Bowl and loved it, the gentleman at the end of the table was devouring his Shiitake Suya Beyond Meat Burger with a huge smile of joy. My friend ordered the Shiitake Suya Salad and Fried Plantains raving about it, and the made to order salad looked to good to be true. As we ate I asked each person around the table what they ordered, if they enjoyed it and would they order the dish again. The reply was unanimous, 100% yes. Truly a gem of unique, nutritious and delicious food, obviously made with Love. Ill be going back for more. Highly Recommended!

This is my first ever review so this shows how disapointing this visit was. I was excited to come to a vegan restaurant as I like to support the cause. Yet, this was very disappointing for a number of reasons. Firstly, their website does not cite the correct prices. The prices for the burger we ordered was $2 more than the website stated. Website states $10.50, but it was $12.50 at the venue. Secondly, the burger was pretty poor to say the least. The Beyond Burger patty was nice (its a great burger patty) but the onion ring (yes 1 tiny onion ring) was burned and the BBQ sauce tasted more like buffalo sauce and again was a tiny portion. For a second, I thought they had forgot the BBQ sauce. The cashew cheese was also a tiny weeny portion (common trend here). Finally, the side of potato balls was a joke. Three tiny measly quarter size potato balls. They sell these potato balls seperately as a half size (6 balls) or 12 balls. So, they effectivey give a 1/4 portion as a side. They serve this on a side plate! That shows you how tiny the portion is. May be the owner is trying to cost cut to save money. I am sympathetic to this but $12.50 for a burger with such tiny amounts for sauce and cheese (vegan), and a pathetic sized side, it is a bit of a joke.

Spicy Tofu Pasta was incredibly moist and tasty; came with plantain logs, green salad mix with pear slices and potato balls . . . well matched with the other ingredients. Reasonably priced, nice portions and really out of this world food (and healthy drinks). Organic / non-GMO / gluten free / locally sourced food, and certified Kosher! Unheard of! I will be a frequent visitor!

Horrific experience - got sick from eating here.The shop had run out of the dressing for my dish so the manager (Peter) substituted it for a peanut dressing without telling me. I’m ALLERGIC to peanuts. I only found out the dish had peanuts because I had an allergic reaction to the food and went back to speak to the shop.When i confronted Peter about this, he didn’t understand how serious the issue was and was unapologetic about causing me an allergic reaction. He said “we ran out of the other dressing so I just put in peanut dressing instead”.This man has absolutely no understanding of food allergies or food safety and should not be managing a restaurant where he is responsible for preparing food. Message for the restaurant owner: fire this man.

Theres still no East African food here but we now have something reminiscent of West African! this place is lit!That said, I do wish there were some wat (African stew) or injera bread or something really reminiscent of Africa.This may seem like small-potatoes to some but I think the condiment selection needs work. Vegans crave heat 🌶‼️. I brought my own Peri Peri pepper sauce, shown in the photo, and some Braggd Liquid Aminos.
