Fantastic Mexican food, extremely high quality at a decent price.The steak I had was some of the best steak Ive ever tasted. The rice is also perfectly seasoned, not a single throwaway flavor. Portions were decent as well but we still had room for flan!Definitely want to make sure you get here early since the line to get in fills up pretty fast.

The food was presented beautifully and tasted decent. We liked the concept of mango guacamole, however it was too salty for our taste. The mango slices thankfully made up for the salt.The queso was good and served with soft tortillas.Tacos with cactus leaf was decent as was the enchilada in butternut squash sauce - the sauce was very tasty and this was our favourite dish.This restaurant only had few vegetarian options to choose from and no modifications were requested or asked for as they mention on the menu that they do not modify.The ambience was good and upbeat.

This place is fantastic, fresh and home made. I got the beer battered shrimp tacos and they were great. Handmade corn tortillas, too. They were a bit spicy but the nachos with the fresh corn was amazing.The staff are friendly and just kind and attentive. A great experience overall.

Excellent staple in downtown Salinas. You will not be disappointed when dining here for drinks, appetizers, and entrees (oh and dessert)! Chef Andres and his staff are attentive and professional. The menu changes regularly with new twists on classic dishes. There is always something new to try. Dining indoor or out in front are both relaxing options. Try it out you’ll love it!

Best food ever!!!! OMG to die for deliciousness! My husband & I just had to share with everyone we know how incredible this family owned restaurant Villa Azteca is. The service is outstanding & the atmosphere is beyond wonderful. We are thrilled to learn that they are opening one up in Carmel by the Sea!!!! We ate outside & had our sweet small dogs Lexi & Kona hangin out in their cozy dog bags from Diggidy Dog - A Dog & Cat Boutique & Carmel Dog Shop ~ such great memories! ♥️

We ordered the Salmon de crema ($25) and Fish tacos ($16). The salmon was not cooked thru . The salmon & crema were too greasy. I believe the salmon was fried.The rice had no taste The fish tacos had no flavor. The flan we ordered tasted like bread pudding ( $7 )(thick & hard). Passion fruit tiramisu was quite tart ($12). Not worth the price. There was a $1.95 charge for transaction fee. Will not be going back.

Easily, the best Mexican food in Salinas, probably the entire peninsula. Nothing else even close. Each dish prepared with finesse and perfect balance of flavors. The restaurant also has a very pleasant atmosphere and excellent service. Its usually packed, as it deserves to be.

Absolutely amazing! A must for anyone wanting great food in Salinas. Ignore negative comments about the wait and service. Worth the wait (expect 45 min for indoor seat unless you get there as they open). Food is a unique combination of spices and sauces you cannot get anywhere else.Recipes are home made from chef’s mom. Had mango and strawberry palomas with calamari appetizer. For dinner we had lobster enchiladas with butternut sauce and enchiladas verdes and recommend all of the above.They make folks wait for their table so the kitchen can keep up and your dinner is smooth and efficient when you finally sit down.Aaliyah was so attentive to our needs tonight even though we sat outside near the heaters and even struck up a conversation.And more good news: they are opening a new location in Carmel! Enjoy the meal!

The tacos were good, interesting mix of shrimp with some kind of fruit. The habanero salsa is great, not too spicy, but with a little bit of fire. The jicama tortillas were good, although I tougher they were going to be slices of jicama, but they were ok and big. Good flavor of the food, big portion, enough to get full.

Stopped here for a quick lunch off of 101 and were really amazed by the quality of the food. There are lots of vegetarian options and just one vegan option (the cactus tacos) but everything was inventive and delicious. My husband liked the short rib benedictos - like an eggs benedict served on sopas with a generous creamy sauce. The salsa was made from fire roasted peppers and was to die for. If we lived closer we would be regulars.

Upscale Mexican place that took the place of Pica. We were sat right away, but the restaurant was busier than Pica ever was. Chips & salsa were ok, nothing special. We had the Sangria Roja - and that was SO delicious! Also had the molcajete & shrimp enchiladas - both were beautifully presented and yummy! The molcajete had so much sauce that more tortillas would be appreciated. Rice pudding for dessert was also very good. Service was friendly enough, but not overly so.

We decided to get the cheesecake, the cheesecake was literally a piece of cake from Costco with some chocolate drizzle and berries. Drinks were great! Dont sit next to the wall if you get cold easily, because there is a vent that lets out cold air. The set up does feel a bit crowded, but I mean its a small place. If you like your chilaquiles served soft, thats how I grew up having them, DO NOT order them here. They were hard chips, and I didnt really like how there was whole beans underneath. The presentation was very pretty, and the sauce was good, but I was not expecting cold nachos. For dinner, I had the fried nopal tacos, and those were very filling! Waiters do take a while to make their rounds, but they are very polite.

I really like the food. Very tasty and good quality. Also there is a lot of variety and different foods compared to other Mexican restaurants I have been too. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is because of the horrible service. First they told us the wait time was 45min when it ended up being 90 minutes. Then we were seated, and no one came to our table for solid 5 minutes. We asked for a hard copy menu and a busboy said he would bring us one, but never showed up again. We had to ask again as the QR code was not working due to their poor cell service. Then as we were finished, the waitress made a snarky comment about us rushing out of here when we werent, we were just asking for to-go boxes as we were finished eating. This is my second time at this restaurant and the first time I was in a large group and the servers kept bringing up the wrong drinks and food. From two experiences, it is evident the service staff cannot handle the pressure with large crowds or groups. The food is excellent, but I would only ever get take out as the service at this restaurant has definitely ruined my experience here.

Solomillo Azteca and Calamari. Best family reunion, best seatting service not even Carmel-by-the-Sea fine dining. Staff attempted to sit us down separately when they had a big table. The host said its a 30 minute wait, then 30 min more. Since it was a long wait, my family decided to sit outside. We sat outside, had our appetizers and drinks, but then it started to rain. Best Calamari and Entree.My family requested to sit inside. The host mentioned there was a table inside for us. But then they were sitting us down in separate tables and it was family reunion. We decided to leave. The waitress said we had to pay and take our order to go that it was a lot of food to waste. The manager sat us inside together, he even brought us a cheesecake for the best seating service. .

I Heard good things about this new place from a couple of friends, and decided to check it out. 4 adults and a child went to villa Azteca for dinner.We ordered 2 molcajetes3 chicharrón tacos. The tacos my granddaughter normally likes chicharrón, but these were soo hard and chewy I couldnt even eat it. They usually ask in other places how spicy you want your molcajete here the Chorizo or something was super spicy for me. The micheladas they add too much chile..my husband called it a chile Beer. Im not much into hot spicy food..1st time I had 2 Glasses of water to be able to eat. Ive been here before and food was great..walked out disappointed and ups set, I wasnt even done drinking my spicy michelada when a lady comes up and told us that our time was up..we practicly got kicked out 😤This place always has people waiting so be prepare to eat and get up to leave your table for some else..I like the place but after this i wont go back..

Food is good, but never go on Fridays-Sunday because you will be waiting for two hours. The place is so small and the wait time is zero accurate if they tell you 30 minutes expect to wait 2 hours. In addition the owners need put a time limit or get a bigger place. Let people know they have 45 min to eat due to the amount of people waiting. The menu pictures looks delicious (good for an instagram post) but if you are starving better plan to eat somewhere else. I like to rate the food but i look at the overall service.

Arrived at 3:25pm on a Sunday and was told by the hostess and eventually by the “person in charge” Gina, that they could not seat my party of 4, because they stop seating at 3:30pm, however this is not indicated anywhere on the restaurants website. The hours on the website and on google indicate that the restaurant closes at 4pm. This was very upsetting given that my family and I, had driven quite a ways to dine at this restaurant. We will not be returning. Some words of advice, include on your website that you stop seating customers, 30 minutes before your actual closing time.

Went there for first time. Started with chips and salsa. The best salsa!!! We ordered the 3 tacos made with New York steak, OMG it was delicious! So tender and flavorful. Cheese was perfect with the meat, then got a dish with cilantro and diced onions. Came with some red sauce, but I used the salsa! Even the corn tortillas were awesome! I would recommend it!

We went as a party of 10. We were really happy to be seated promptly. We ordered our drinks and food with no problem. I’ve been here before and have had great service. Here’s where the issues took place. We got our food after 45 minutes. It was expected as we were a large order. Unfortunately, they forgot one whole order and they got another mixed up and before we left, they were asking for some of our seating before we were even ready to leave. I was told by the waitress (I have 3 witnesses to prove) our order that was forgotten would be “on the house”. I had to share half my food with my wife before hers even came out and by that time, we were mostly full and used the dish to fill in the gaps. When I got my tab, the “on the house” order was not the case and was told by the staff it was never told to us even though 4 of us heard it. They offered a 15$ dessert but we told them we were full and would not eat it. I asked if they could just take off the price of the dessert from the tab considering the circumstances but they refused as “that was all they could do”. I was told that if we would of give the food back, it would of been a different story but considering we were told it was on the house already, there was no reason too. We were already at a $200+ tab not counting the tip and thought we would get the treatment we deserved. We left our name and number and date of service and will see what the owner has to say about it. Will update.

We had heard really good comments about this restaurant and the food looked very appetizing but the service was not up to par. We were a party of 3 and when we got there they told us they would call us when it was our turn to be seated. We took a stroll around downtown passing the Maya cinema for like about 40 min and no call. We then went back to the restaurant where we asked and they seated us after 40 min and we noticed that there were people sitting down that were there way after us. Also people coming in who they seated right away with no wait. That was only the beginning. After we were seated they asked what we wanted to drink and brought chips and dip for us. That was all we ate that night. We ordered our appetizer and our food. We waited for like 30 min and nothing was brought to us while a party of 7 who came after us was already eating their food. We asked about our food and they said that the appetizer takes a longer since it goes in the oven. The tables around us were being served their food and most of them who came after us and had more people. We asked again for our food and they said it was being prepared. We got tired of waiting about an hour for the food plus another like 40 min for the wait in which they never called us to be seated until we went to check. We told them that we were leaving since they had taken a really long time and we didn’t feel comfortable eating there anymore with people staring at us and having to have waited almost 2 hours to be served our food.

Let me start off by saying the salsa is absolutely delicious. And to get more into detail about this place I was amazed that this is actually an upper scale Mexican restaurant that has fantastic flavor for example the rice seems like a basil pesto mix couldnt really define the exact flavor but it was Green. I would definitely return, what I didnt like is they did not have any menus what kind of restaurant does that not everyone these days has a smartphone.

I am editing this review as I decided to give this place one more chance, and I am sure happy I did. The food was just as amazing as I remembered it, delicious unique dishes with layers of flavors and textures. It seems now they have the customer service figured out, as we received exceptional service. I will be back again and refer this place to others.I have tried this place only once, and the food was amazing. The service was poor. The front door to the dining area was left open and it was cold, the wait staff was in heavy jackets. It was difficult to enjoy the food when it was so cold inside. Another couple asked for them to close the door, which they did, but moments later, another waitress opened it again. The next time I tried to go they stopped taking tables early. The following time I tried to order take out, they put me on hold and forgot about me. After 18 minutes of being on hold I hung up and tried again. I called 8 times and no answer. I tried calling again today, Wednesday at 5:30 PM to order food to go, and they are also not answering their phone. My friend tried calling to order food to go and they are also not answering the phone.

I hate leaving bad reviews for restaurants as I worked in the service industry for a long time but my goodness what horrific service. We arrived before they opened at 530 and here is the rundown of what happened:5:35pm: Seated6pm: Drink/Food Order (after telling the host we have not seen a server)6:40pm: requested food to go as we had still not be served anything other than chips and guacamole6:45pm: waitress comes out to ask if we want desert despite the fact that we have not even been served dinner yet.Update: I just learned that they add an automatic 20% gratuity for EVERY bill. This is the most underhanded thing I think I have ever seen by an establishment. While I agree that everyone should tip and if your service was so bad that you dont want to tip you should speak to the manager on duty, to tell patrons they are automatically on the hook for 20% regardless of the quality of the service is nuts. If someone had dinner and their server was rude and they wanted to leave a 10% tip are they just stuck? Cmon...do better.

Drove in from out of town to dine here and was really disappointed. The presentation of the plates and the staff are very nice but the food is served in small portions and very expensive for what it is. I ordered mole and it was a small fillet mignon steak covered in sauce. They did not give me a steak knife to cut my steak and had to use my butter knife that was on the table that night. Mole is traditionally made with chicken and while looking around also noticed other traditional Mexican dishes being made in an almost Tex Mex style. This restaurant is trying too hard to make themselves an upscale restaurant without following traditional recipes. I am extremely disappointed and do not recommend to other hungry folks driving by. Either go to a steak house for a steak or go to a traditional Mexican restaurant for Mexican food.

Went there for the first time for dinner and probably won’t return. Pluses we’re the fish tacos and guava Paloma were very good and my husband enjoyed the sirloin dish he got. However, the Chili Rellenos I had lacked flavor, had no spice, and was served lukewarm on a cold plate, with way too much sauce. Two friends of ours had enchiladas which they said were good, but also just lukewarm. The Salsa was good had a nice smoky flavor but the guacamole merely tasted like two smashed avocados with nothing else in them. Overall we weren’t super wowed. And as other reviews mention it’s a little presumptuous to charge a 20% service fee for 4 people.

I came here with a party of four. The food was very good and service was fine but I didnt see anywhere on the website that mentioned charging 20% for a service charge automatically. Ive worked in the service industry for a long time and dont believe its very honest to spring that on a table without notice until their check arrives. Paying employees a living wage and eliminating the need for service charge would be the best solution, but many restaurants dont do this. Id prefer to know ahead of time about the service charge for the future.

I’ve just never had a good experience at Villa Azteca. This was my 4th time visiting the restaurant after not being there for a while. I went with a friend for brunch. We were served our food but not water even though we had asked for water. Time passed and we asked someone else. Nothing. We had to ask a third person for water. Someone finally brought us water after we were finished eating. The food was okay, but definitely overpriced. The tab came in at $98 for two chilaquiles, guacamole, and two drinks! Maybe I’ll give them a try again but it won’t be anytime soon for sure.

The worst customer service. I was charged 20% automatically without being told until my check cleared. We were a party of 4. I inquired about this practice and was told it was the first thing in the menu. Actually it’s the last thing on the menu at the bottom and said 4+. I called and the manager/owner Maria which is shocking that someone who owns a business would communicate so rudely. She wouldn’t let me speak and kept talking over me aggressively. She didn’t want to give me her name because she said I made her feel uncomfortable, but could not tell me how. I really don’t think she was the manager. A policy that charges 20% on a ticket of four or more people should be communicated upon arrival. This restaurant is more interested in the bottom line more than there reputation, service, and really even the food. I will not be spending my money there. Wish there was something less than one star. Don’t think that new restaurant in Carmel they want to open would accept that kind of customer service but I guess it’s ok for them to do to the community of Salinas. It will be interesting to see if they charge 20% in Carmel for a party of 4???

Make sure you take your smartphone as you have to snap a pic of a QR code for the menu. Ive been anticipating this new venture since Pica Fresh went out of business and one rainy day, saw the Now Open sign up. The decor is fairly minimalist and a perfect complement to other new additions to Old Town Salinas, where the standard for upscale aesthetic and cuisine is met.The novelty of salmon pastor tacos caught my eye and I enjoyed the chips and salsa while waiting for them to arrive. The tacos were great and well portioned, and while they do lean towards the pricier side, I found them to be well worth it. Ive since been back for the chile verde, which could have used a bit more spice but was otherwise delicious.I will be back for more, specifically the mole served on the dinner menu! While we waited we ate chips and salsa, they asked us if we wanted more and we said yes, and OH surprise, when the bill arrived I was amazed at how expensive everything was, inside it they charged me for the chips, plus there was a charge for $40 dollars that According to them, the tip is $40 DOLLARS TIP? Please do not abuse.Although the food was good, I dont think I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. The charges are absurdly high, and they are slow to serve. THE SERVICE WAS NOT DESERVING THE 40 DOLLARS, WHICH I FORCEDLY HAD TO PAY. 👎🏼

Hello, I give 3 stars, the food is very delicious but the service is terrible, they gave me the appetizer that I asked for and they didnt bring me plates to serve us, they didnt give my husbands vevida, he had to tell them, then I asked for another vevida for me and they gave it to me. They took them when we were coming but they gave us the bill quickly so we could leave. Its a haute cuisine restaurant so they treat you like this at Denis. Im sorry for the food but they treated us luxuriously.

Its a bit sad to make this comment, especially because I love their food but I went for my lunch and a drink for which, according to my accounts, the total price would be $26 and the guy charged me $31 when I asked for information about why? He didnt know what to tell me and he knew that they were the taxes, which as soon as I showed him that the taxes were included in the total, he said that the computer was barely 3 days old and that he had to pay the total amount, in my personal opinion it doesnt make sense. excuse, however, I added more tips, although somehow I felt cheated !!
