I ordered Village Kitchen from Hungry Panda 🐼. The foods are so good and authentic. I ordered a chicken pork tripe Herb soup (猪肚鸡汤), a thousand years egg & eggplant & green pepper, and a spicy cumin pork ribs. They are all amazing. I think the chicken pork tripe Herb soup is really healing, it is very nutritious. I definitely recommend people who want to try authentic Hunan style Chinese people.

Really great cauliflower, like best Ive ever had. They are coated in a salty coating and then deep fried to a golden crisp, must eat while hot. We had wanted to order a whole fish but it wouldve taken 25min to cook. Instead we ordered the fish head dish which was a huge portion! We did see some who ordered dishes beyond their spiciness limits, so do ask to reduce spiciness levels if you need it

Cauliflower:This wasnt on the menu but we asked for different veggie options. The spices and flavors used in this stir fry were so good! There are small pieces of pork belly that marinate in the same seasonings. Awesome!Cumin ribs:These were soooo tender; the meat just falls off the bone. The outer coating is nice and crispy from the cumin rub. Amazing! Probably my favorite dish.Mushroom beef fillet mild:This was ok. It has that kind of greasy soy flavor. It wasnt bad, just not my taste.Specially tea smoked duck:This has a nice smokey flavor, almost like a ham but in duck format. The skin is super crispy and thin and not that oily either. Background: It has Chinese-style service, which means they wont come check up on you like American servers. Not a big deal imo.Dishes we got:- Eggplant (highly recommend)- Sweet & Sour Fish (tastes like bubble gum, idk it was gross)- Lotus Pork Rib Soup (watery imo/lacking flavor, my gf thought it was okay)- Spiced Braised Beef Shank (flavor good, beef was chewy)The real problem I think with this place is that its quite a bit overpriced and that sets peoples expectations for excellent service and excellent food quality/taste. Overpriced poor quality food, not at all like in China. I have visited Beijing, Xian, Yichang, Shanghai, and Zhengzhou in China. The restaurants where the locals eat in each of these areas have excellent food prepared by owners who take pride in the quality and preparation of their food. They serve some of the best food I have ever eaten with large portions, fresh ingredients, and fair prices. Village Kitchen is the opposite. The food is bland and every corner is cut to maximize profits. The lamb pictured in the menu shows chunks, however what is served is miniscule shavings of lamb like the wood shavings from a pencil sharpener. The only flavor of the lamb dish was an overabundance of cooking oil. When I got home my body decided to reject the meal from both ends. My wife ordered the pork stomach which was also bland and priced double that of better quality restaurants. If you are planning to spend at least $50 for two people, a way better meal can be had at the many better Chinese restaurants in San Diego like Chins and Chuns.

I lived in Hunan for more than five years. This food tastes the same. Its very authentic. But I only gave four stars because you have to serve yourself water from the water cooler across the room. It would be much better if they left a pitcher of water on the table. For faster service, you have to summon the waiters Chinese style (with a loud voice). Dont be shy. Its just a cultural difference. The prices are reasonable and the portions are large enough. Theres plenty of parking outside, but be prepared to wait in line a bit during peak hours. If you like spicy, order the frog.

The take out experience is REALLY BAD. They will assume u should know when to pick up the food. I waited an hour like the system said. Then when I arrived, and complained about the long wait, they said the food is already ready a while ago. I should knew that I only need to wait about 20 minutes before pick up. And they act like it was my fault not to pick up on time. This has happened to me twice. And I’ve only gotten take out twice at this restaurant.With that service, PLEASE DON’T SPEND MONEY AT THIS RESTAURANT

This place is full of native Chinese speakers as customers. The Best Grilled Fish looks intimidating, but its super flaky and moist so its easy to eat. They also pull out the center bone before cooking. That fish was awesome, the Mapo Tofu was ok.

There is plenty of parking in the plaza. The food is authentic southern Chinese. The price is reasonable. The food is really good! Most of the items are spicy. But you always have the option to order them mildly spicy. There is plenty of seating. The only issue I had was the front door was left ajar in the cold weather. I tried to close it. But it wasnt at 100%. We had to sit close to the open door which killed a bit of the mood. Did I mention the food is really authentic?

Absolutely DELICIOUS! Came here with my girlfriends Chinese coworker, who said it is great and authentic. I would have no knowledge of authentic, but oh my goodness was it good. Their food is really salty as always, but tastes good for sure. The young waitress is a serious problem as always too. Last time we went to lunch on Sunday, 8 days ago. I asked to-go boxes when we finished. She sat there asked me how many without any kind words. Actually, all my three dishes were full, so if she pay attention or just took a look at my table, itd be really obvious to see how many I need. When she delivered the boxes, she gave me a normal box for the fish soup. I didnt wanna say something like its a wrong type of box, so I said it might be too small for the soup (I even dont wanna mention its not okay for the soup) . She said if its not big enough, I will give you another one. And then, she came back with a POS machine when my two hands were busy on baggaging my food. She asked me if I wanna pay by card or cash. I said give me one second. She just left the machine there and left. I waited for a while, and then I realized she didnt wanna come back anymore, so I picked up the machine and paid the bill. She probably thought she could let me stay there forever, but she didnt know Im a server too. Additionally, Id feel so shameful if I treat my customers like that.And its even not the first time I had her service. At that time, she charged me a normal price without giving me 12 percent discount which they give to everyone. When I asked her the reason, she lied that I had to pay online to get the discount and she could not do anything at that time. She probably thought I never ate there, so I didnt know they give everyone that discount no matter dinning or pickup. So, please really be careful their service. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR BILL BEFORE GIVING THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD.

The Hunan style food is good. But the service is very very bad. The servers were just standing there, chatting and laughing. I waited for a long time for nothing. So I had to bring my menu to them and said can I order please, and came to them to say I need to pay the bill please. I dont want to beg the server to serve me. Horrible service.Two parties ordered after us were served food before us. We waited for 20 minutes to get a pre-made cold dish and 40 to get a simple pan fry dish. Waitresses acted like they dont even work there. Took forever to get their attention, even longer to actually get what we asked from them (they did bring loads of attitude on time when we had to remind them). Weve been to restaurant with bad services but this one tops them all. Will not come back again and will not recommend any of our friends to come to this place.

This place was recommended by one of our foodie friends so I had decent expectations coming in. I found out later that there was one particular dish he was a fan of - the mashed eggplant with century egg. Comes with a giant mortar and pestle that looked pretty neat and was the best mix of flavors in an eggplant dish Ive ever had if not the biggest portion. Most of the other dishes were just average (braised pork), lacking in flavor (fried rice), or just came with a higher price when compared with other places such as Chef Chin or Szechuan Chef.Since Im a fan of tea we also tried the Dragon Well and Oosmanthus Oolong teas which looked like they were loose leaf but somehow still lacked flavor, perhaps they had been recycled?Food did come out quickly though and service was pretty good for a Chinese place - we were in and out in about an hour. If youre really into Hunan cuisine, you might like it more but otherwise I would consider it a maybe try once kind of place.

This is one of my favorite Chinese places in San Diego, alongside Village North. They serve Hunan cuisine which is known for its spiciness and unforgiving assault of flavors on the palate, so be prepared for a heavy tasting meal and perhaps lots of rice and ice water!Some of the highlights here include the preserved pork--I like it both in the stir fry and in the dry pot. The stir fry can be a tad dry at times, but the fresh garlic leaves more than make up for that, and the dry pot is just so flavorful with the smoked bamboos, giving the dish as smoky of a flavor as you will ever find in Chinese food (which should appeal to any BBQ fans out there). Chairman Maos braised pork is quite good, similar to many other braised pork dishes, with a fermented bean curd flavor, as is common in the braised pork of certain Chinese (non Shanghainese) cuisines. The deboned pork rib with fried egg casserole is actually one of the milder dishes on the menu in terms of flavor, but not in terms of spiciness! Its one that I enjoy very much as well for some lighter dishes to balance the others. On the other hand, the pickled chilli with pork is quite a spicy dish, with the aromas of the chilli pepper making the dish very very good.Of the non-pork dishes, the Chefs Beef Brisket is quite good, a little bit reminiscent of beef noodle soups except served as a dish without noodles and soup. The mapo tofu is a simple but very flavorful dish with plenty of Sichuan peppercorns to numb your tongue. The steamed egg here is possibly one of my favorite steamed eggs Ive had, with some good flavors and a very good texture on the egg--not over or underdone. The eggplant with green chilli and century egg dish is one of their signatures for a reason. The flavors are very balanced with the eggplant serving as a good base.I could probably go on about the other dishes since there really hasnt been many that have disappointed me. I highly recommend coming with a group of people to order and try more dishes and seeing which you enjoy the most! I also noticed that the dishes tend to be spicier in the summer, since perhaps it fluctuates with the spiciness of the chilli peppers which may be seasonal, so if you want to give yourself a challenge, definitely come during that time.

Real Chinese food. The food has the potential to be better, but this style of cooking is not easy to come by in San Diego and is good enough for me to come back regularly. The eggplant and preserved egg oil is relatively large and not spicy. The tiger pepper is not peeled and is whole, and the preserved egg is not chopped but is in half. The squirrel fish batter is thicker and has a soft and tender texture. The mushroom soup is delicious, but there are many pork slices, and the meat slices are overcooked and not tender enough. The sweet and sour fried dough sticks are good, this is the first time I eat fried dough sticks like this.

The portions are large and the ingredients are good. Fat intestines and yellow throat taste very good. Grilled fish must be grilled over fire for a while to get the flavor. Unlike in China, where live fish are killed immediately, here the fish is grilled and reheated. Maybe it’s because restaurants in the United States don’t allow freshly killed fish.

I am from Hunan. If you want authentic Hunan spicy food, go somewhere else. The chili peppers in the chili stir-fried pork are not spicy, the chili pepper beef is cut into too large pieces, and there is too much coriander. Hunan cuisine doesn’t use so much coriander. The water spinach was overcooked. Overall, it doesnt have the special spicy taste of Hunan cuisine. disappointment.

We are neighbors to this restaurant, and before the beginning of 2020, the quality was pretty good. Ordered takeout a few times since Covid-19. The food quality has dropped from being good to being very unpalatable recently. The last takeout was at the beginning of last month. I ordered two dishes, a dry pot and a sausage. Both dishes looked very stale in appearance and taste (in order to save costs, many restaurants cook a large amount of hard dishes at once and store them in the refrigerator for later use. I understand this, but the prerequisite is that they must be kept fresh). After eating that fat sausage in one bite, the food has spoiled and my mouth is full of disgusting taste😡🥵. The chef put a lot of sugar in it to cover up the stale taste, but I could still taste it. Regardless of the reason, these businesses use stale and disgusting food to fool consumers and make money. This disgusting smell still impresses me to this day, and I don’t know how to describe the anger I feel. . . This restaurant doesnt deserve even half a star. . . . Nowadays, I am less and less confident about the quality of Chinese food. The only good thing is that I am much more diligent in cooking at home recently. Cooking by yourself saves money and is delicious, so why spend money to make life difficult for yourself? I write down these experiences in the hope of providing reference and help to consumers. I ordered a few spicy dishes and ordered non-spicy Yangzhou fried rice for my children. As a result, Yangzhou fried rice and stir-fried pork have the same spiciness. The child couldnt eat it at all.
