A nice Japanese restaurant. It has all the staples. The sushi was good. And the hibachi grilled food was delicious. Would be good for the waiters to ask if its a persons first visit and explain a little. Overall a good place.

First time eating at Yamato and I have to say it was great! We went for teppanyaki and I thought it was very cool that they had room for smaller groups. There were two of us and we had our own table and our own chef. He was very friendly and funny. He also made a heart for us which was awesome. I highly recommend it. It was a lot of fun!

Walked in and sat right down. Weve eaten at a lot of Japanese steakhouses and while this isnt on the same playing field as Benihana, it still does the trick. Tables are a little sticky but the service is really good and its fun to bring the family here. Just dont expect fine dining.

First time patron. The hostess squeezed my party of 5 into a hibachi table, so that was a great start. The chef interacted with us and performed the fire trick for the kids a 2nd time bc it was such a hit the 1st time. Food was tasty, as was my honey bourbon cocktail. The hibiscus ice is a nice touch. I didnt learn until after we left the restaurant that my 2 girls didnt get their main order of shrimp for dinner, but we all had a shrimp app in the beginning. All in all, it was a good experience.

Not the best experience here today. Website not updated with opening hours, and nobody ever answers the phone.Service friendly, but forgetful. Food and drink OK but the workstation surround was badly broken and dirty. Not good for somewhere preparing food.

I had very good company. I enjoyed watching the meal being cooked at my table. The food was well cooked and tasty. I had egg fried rice and chicken. The others had steak, scallops, and shrimp. Everyone liked what they ordered. The place was a little noisy. But otherwise I had an enjoyable evening.

It was yummy and the staff was friendly. Id say its a definite yes for a birthday celebration! I got the chicken and it was pretty good, alittle on the dry side but I also tried their steak and that was great! Meal comes with soup, salad, rice, veggies and shrimp along with your entree, so plenty of food! Its loud, just a warning but it is fun and the noise is apart of the experience. Overall good place to visit if youre in Simi and slightly cheaper than their well know competitor

The pandemic has clearly been very difficult on teppanyaki restaurants which rely on dining-in services. Unfortunately, this Yamato location seems to have only recently come out of mothballs.I love what the decor is intended to be, and the design of the location, but it needs some tender loving care. Whole sections are closed and unlit, making it seem like you are not supposed to be there. It needs a thorough cleaning/renovation. Sadly, with so few customers in evidence, the owners are not likely to be able to do it anytime soon.I really want this location to succeed! I hope they are able to re-emerge, and capture and active clientele!Sadly, I had hours of abdominal issues (to put it politely) after eating here, though no one else in my party did.

Our waiter was drunk and reeked of alcohol. The restaurant smelled like cleaner. I understand it was under new management but it was horrible. The Landing is down the street and better in every way. My wife had a tempura dinner and I had 2 rolls. Hers was ok mine were sub par. Sorry, wont go back.

The three special rolls we ordered were too sweet- it really threw the flavor off. Also, one of them had some sort of fried rice patty that was impossible to chew. The place has really gone down hill since it was bought by the new owners.

Its past its prime and seen much better days. Its ok for a semi cheap lunch but there are better options. Rolls are loose and have been the last 3 visits. Rock shrimp used to be fantastic as an app. This visit we ordered and it didnt come until we were nearly finished. My last visit to this one.

Awkward service. Two in our party, and seated quickly, but not even greeted for about 10 minutes. After being greeted, we ordered drinks, and then another waitress greeted us and asked for our drink order. The sushi(that I ordered as a meal) was brought out well in advance before my guest’s meal, so she had to watch me eat while waiting for her meal. The sushi was nothing to be impressed about. It didn’t have a fresh taste. You just don’t get what you pay for here.

Been going here for years and was so sad to see it is going down in quality slowly but surely. Lets first start with the internal structure... it is tired, worn and unsatisfactory. The owners could use to shut down the restaurant for a good week to properly clean every crevice and especially the bathrooms. The floors were sticky and the stainless steel bathroom stalls were appalling. Regarding the service, they had these poor people running and i mean hauling a$$. They were seating people even though there wasnt adequate service for all tables. We ordered 5 rolls, and one came out every 15 to 20 minutes... we needed to get a burger afterwards. Regarding the food... we ordered the baked scallops and it came out with warm scallops on top, but they werent baked nor did it look like the picture. The zen roll was supposed to be wrapped in soy paper and it came out with rice and seaweed. Again with only two sushi chefs, they should have seated people based on their staffand ability tti serve att quality levels. We had four servers waiting on us. Ther poor hostess was forced to be a buser, and a server on top of her normal duties. It was an entire mess. Lastly we overheard a longtime customer complain to the hostess about his bad experience and it pretty much validated our issues. Sadly we will not be going back.

I never take the time to write reviews, but this was so bad and disappointing I had to warn others. We’ve been coming here for years every time we visit family in LA, about twice a year. I didn’t think to read reviews before coming but I should have because apparently under new ownership they don’t even try to serve decent food!First, bathrooms filthy. Second the sushi was inconsistent, tiny, and so sloppily made I thought maybe the sushi chef was out and they had a waiter making the rolls. My daughter always gets the 911 roll. This time it came as small as my husbands avocado rolls with almost no avocado on top, but same price as ever. My spicy tuna avocado roll had almost inedible spicy tuna inside, and apparently they couldn’t fig Red out how to make it bc the waiter came back and asked if I just wanted the avocado on top (I mean, spicy tuna avocado roll is available in every sushi place and even grocery store so I kind of thought they’d know how to put the avocado in there) then when it arrived, it had seriously a SLIVER of avocado on top of sloppily made rolls, not even enough to taste, and each sliver at sort of odd angles not even attempted to make look nice. My husbands avocado rolls had almost no avocado- also slivers- the rice was incredibly salty and they didn’t bother to roll it all the way up so the prices were falling apart.It was seriously like they made no effort whatsoever, but charged the same prices. Oh, and the lava cake dessert- which we get every time- now had a spoonful of ice cream on top instead of a scoop.We just spent the whole time feeling ripped off and annoyed and will have to find a new “favorite” sushi place for our visits here.

New ownership is now nickel and dining their guests and understaffing. Service is very slow and there really no show anymore. Very nice cook, but no interaction or show (tricks). Just cooking meal and moving on. Our waitress did not even know the alcohol drinks on the menu, when my wife ordered here drink,. The martini came out wrong, but our server was nonexistent, so my wife had to go the bar herself to get the right drink. She was very friendly and it was likePulling teeth to get a soda refills. Dinner ended being over two hours because service was so slow, was only able to get one refill during that time. To top it off the server dropped off our check, and thankfully I looked it over, because when she brought back my charge slip for me to sign, she added an autogratuity (we had 2 adult and 2 kid meals) and hid the original check hoping that I would not see it and tip again. The other couple sitting at our table. Did not notice the autogratuity and tipped again. They just left mad because our server never was around for them to ask her if she did the same to them. This used to be our go to restaurant, but guess we will be going elsewhere now. New ownership and service staff have ruined the Agoura location, dine at your own risk.

I was so looking forward to getting some sushi at Yamato last weekend, until i got there and it was absolutely awful. The fish was not fresh, the rolls not well made, the presentation was half ass, and the drink i got tasted like syrup. I have gone to this place for a long time and have been very satisfied. Sushi is not cheap anywhere, but it was always nice to know that this place was a sure thing to get an excellent meal at a fair price, However, sometime in the last months this place has gone in the toilet. I am very unhappy with the downslide this place has gone on and the acceptance of mediocrity strikes again. I think a little more attention to detail would be nice, and if there is a next time I am going to make the waitress drink my drink and see how she likes it. I still have the taste of syrup in my mouth. Ughhhhhhhh!!

Been coming here for over 15 years. And this place has steadily gone down hill. Havent been for a while, just decided to try it again, ordered the filet mignon teppan style, and was disappointed again. Terrible meat, tasted like low grade sirloin.. only reason I gave it 3 stars is the fried rice was so good and service was decent and quick and friendly. Otherwise, worse experience food wise so far.

I have tried this restaurant 3 times in 2 years. I have had the same horrible experience each time. 3 times your out! This place is always flithy. Tables, chairs, and floors are not properly cleaned. They pack you in like sardines, and rush to get you out. Are they even following health and fire codes?The restaurant itself needs a complete make over and a new staff. The ventalation is very bad as well. The food is no better. The sushi is always too warm. As if its been sitting and or premade, and not refrigerated! This is a sign of bad management! Dont waste your time.

Has gone downhill since change in ownership, ayce sushi has been eliminated, and prices are much higher. The food was good as well as the service. But when we tried to pay we were told giftcards are no longer accepted and were given a number to call. The number was disconnected. When I called the number on the gift card it was the number to the restaurant. I was told by the hostess that the manager was uninterested in helping us. We have been coming here for at least 10 years but will not be returning.

The only thing that saved this restaurant was the company of our friends. Our server didnt know the menu and got our order wrong. Terrible experience. We had to ask for a waitress after 45 minutes, then they had to take our order 3 x, then they forgot to bring 2 soups. We had to clean our dirty dishes off the table ourselves. When the brought the check it was all wrong. They charged us for a kids milk that they never had. They had the guts to put the tip on the check. The place was dirty and the restrooms were atrocious

Not only was our cook in tepanyaki rude and only spoke to the other group at our table(IN SPANISH), but every time there was extra food left over after serving everyone he would give the extras to them. EVERY TIME. I ordered the chicken, it was way overly salted and SUPER DRY! The fried rice had no flavor and when I asked for him to put teriyaki sauce in my rice he got an annoyed look on his face. Im confused by all the glowing reviews here. The last two times we have been in, each about a month apart the food and service have been sub par. The restaurant has replaced the old, sticky, nasty tabletops with a granite style top but its still the same food and service.Example from Wednesday 5/3/17 - seated and waited on. Drink and appetizer order given to waitress 10 minutes later the 2 waters arrived. I ordered a chicken teriyaki for my daughter and I ordered 2 California rolls.Chicken came under cooked. And was sent back. California rolls came and they were warm. Hmmm. Warm. Sent back. Waited, waited chicken came back, California rolls came back. Appetizer arrived.Dont get me wrong, this is not a slam on a single bad service. This is consistently the level of service you get here.Drive 5 minutes north and go to Cho Cho Sans. its worth it.

Good food, but: they brought the salad and the soup at the same time making it feel rushed. Then they started bringing the food cart to cook right away. What has happened to the way they would let you relax between courses. Before they would also serve the shrimp appetizer, before the ordered entre, today it was all jumbled with the veggies and main course of meat. We came here instead of Musashi because dinner was served nicely. NOW THEY ARE ALL THE SAME. Ill just cook at home next time. OH! Also, there was no show! Not entertaining at all. This place appears to be under new ownership - and what a mess. The bathrooms are in dire need of cleaning, the waiters inattentive, inexperienced, and disorganized. The orders placed all arrived with small but noteworthy errors; no wasabi was given with the sushi ordered, salad was served twice (once with the wrong dressing), and instead of Beef Teppanyaki, we received Teriyaki Beef.

My husband and I got sick from food poisoning after eating here. We started to feel bad the same night we had dinner and it was really bad next two days. It took us 5 days for recovery. We will fill out a report to the Public Heath. We should have just walked out after seeing how dirty the restroom is. It looks like was never cleaned. Seriously dirty.

Yamato is a friendlier version of Benihana in my opinion. I have been to both, and always prefer Yamato to the poor customer service of Benihana restaurants I have visited.Yamato also has a more spacious floor plan that keeps restaurant goers from feeling trapped halfway through your meal! The Teppanyaki chefs at Yamato have consistently taken time to not only keep the table lively, but to explain various cooking styles, sauces, and meats they are using or would suggest.When I had less time at my disposal I enjoyed sitting at the bar during happy hour, getting a beer, and ordering sushi rolls. Dave, the Wednesday evening bartender, always made sure I was fed & that my glass was never empty!Even at the busiest times Yamato is the best choice. More food, better prices, and better customer service!Lunch time here is the best deal.

There’s new ownership and new menu, I would avoid this place. There’s many better places if you want sushi. Servers are painfully awkward and food is average. The high reviews feel fake honestly. Yamatos sushi is amazing at an affordable price. The atmosphere is great! Right to your left as you walk it, is a giant koi pond also containing two turtles to entertain young kids! This has been my favorite Japanese restaraunt for at least five years now. Its also great for younger couple trying to eat sushi on an affordable price.
