They serve all table orders of sushi on the sushi boat! Veggie rolls are kept separate from the fish rolls on a separate serving dish. Vegan Poke is a lovely fresh taste but do know there is a haystack of spiraled radishes underneath which are still tasty I was just surprised by them. My two veggie rolls were good but missing the it factor. My friends deeply enjoyed their fish rolls. One said there was too much rice paired with her salmon nigiri. She said the salmon was some of the best shenanigans had but the rice was taking too much away from it. We would all happily eat here again.

A hidden gem for sushi in Lake Tahoe. I hardly believe that there is a sushi shop here, not to mention if it is quality one. It turns out that it is quite decent. The quality of the fish cant be compared with the restaurant near the coast with a better supplier. Still, the execution and presentation is beautiful. Those rolls are also reasonably priced. The staffs are very friendly. If you are craving sushi in Tahoe, you can rely on this place.

Went there during their happy hour (Tuesday -Thursday 4 to 5pm)The Happy Hour menu has an extensive variety of apps and rollsHonestly, I was surprised. My girlfriend and I arrived into South Lake Tahoe to celebrate her birthday weekend and absolutely loved this place. The server had only been there for about a month but directed us through the menu like a pro. The food was amazing, great presentation from start to finish! I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for years and I honestly wouldn’t post reviews unless I felt the need to. This was one of those times! Great job all around I highly recommend to anyone that’s looking for some great sushi :)

I agree with the lower rated reviews here. The rolls have a lot of filler (imitation crab) and sauce. It doesn’t taste bad necessarily, but it’s just very mediocre. We also got the tempura platter. It looks really impressive but it was very greasy and heavy on the batter. Also there was so much red bell pepper and orange sweet potato, not really vegetables you’d see in tempura.

I had sushi in 4 different countries and this was one of the best, nice staff and the place has good vibes.I was wondering why some people were not satisfied about service and said they were waiting for their food half an hour but I think it is because the kitchen make all your orders in one dish which makes sense and it is even better to have all your orders at the same time. Tonight we thought to have sushi and we came for an early dinner. But this place was so busy that we had to wait for 30 minutes. At one point we thought to go to the Nepali/Indian restaurant Himalayas next to this and we said nah!We asked to be seated inside and we were served very well by the staff. We asked for green tea and I really loved their tea pot too. We ordered spicy edamame, spicy tuna, Godzilla, Typhoon, and ceviche. It was quite a bit for four people. It was delicious. I loved Godzilla the most. They are very busy but very quick in their service. If youre here at South Tahoe then I recommend you to visit this place.

Nice sushi place with a great staff. Although you need to order the right things.Godzilla was good, it was as described and mildly spicy. The only sushi we enjoyed.Spicy mango from the vegetarian section wasn’t as good as expected. Something in it was sharply spicy and the outer covering. The outer covering was black rice.Crispy rainbow was one big piece instead of few small piece, which isn’t great when you are sharing the food. This is something we weren’t aware of, so that’s our bad!Overall I enjoyed the service, the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming

Not the greatest - looks better than it tastes.My boyfriend and I were excited to visit Yugen Cuisine during our visit to South Lake Tahoe after seeing the great online reviews.While our server was friendly and the ambiance was pleasant and energetic, the food was a big disappointment. The vegetable tempura was tasty but greasier than we’re used to, and with some non-traditional veggies included like onions and bell peppers. We also ordered 4 rolls: Spicy California, Caterpillar, Ichiban, and Godzilla. As a common theme these rolls had too much rice, which overpowered the other flavors and was unusually mushy but not starchy. There was excessive sauce on the rolls that had sauce. The pieces of sashimi were small and hard to taste. Some of the sashimi was also super flaky… seemed old or very low quality? The imitation crab *did* have a strong flavor - but not a particularly pleasant one (quite fishy).The wooden boat that the rolls came in looked really cool though.

We arrived at 5pm on. Tuesday night and had a 22 minute wait which wasn’t too bad. The service was great. The price point for the sushi was reasonable $10-$15 per roll. The sake (Typhoon) at $6 was a great price point and they provided a lot of it in what looked to be a wine glass. The sushi was good but not the best I’ve tasted. I would go back.

Very busy place when I went for dinner with my family. I ordered their largest sashimi platter and requested extra salmon because my son likes only that. I was shocked when they served thinly sliced pieces of fish the kind that is served on top of rolls and not nice cut fish, if you just like Japanese food then its okay to go here. If youre really going to enjoy sushi I would never recommend this place.

Great new sushi restaurant, creative rolls and good variety. There is also a nice selection of vegetarian rolls available. Their small plates were delicious and bigger than expected. The staff was friendly and hard working, despite only having a two waitresses on a busy night. They kept everything organized and got orders out quickly as possible. Definitely will be recommending to friends!

We went there prior to their opening time at noon. McKenzie was prepping the place and was very accommodating. She invited us to come in and find the spot we wanted . We sat by the sushi bar and started placing orders of appetizers such as ceviche and mussels and seared tuna. Then we ordered salmon, tuna and butter fish for the sashimi and a bunch of different rolls and Tamago as well. Overall there fish doesn’t smell and the food is excellent. One of the best sushi place by far. The server was very knowledgeable about the menu items and was up to par and more for her service and pleasant demeanor. Overall it was a great experience for us during that time. First customer lmao!!!

Raw sushimi is probably best if that is your taste.. personally-- best sushi experience in life was with samurai x in antioch. Every dish with samurai x was perfect every time for years. Sushi was very simple and the same, the choice is small. Ordered 4 sets, 3 of them were almost identical. Well, at least the price was right. ( 50$ )and really liked that all the sushi was brought at the same time and on such a large tray, and it was also unusual to see wasabi and ginger on the cucumber :)

The sashimi was cut into big pieces but it was so fresh I didnt even mind! Lovely staff and everything we got was great from the ceviche to the miso. Definitely recommend the ceviche and sashimi if you get down like that. Those hand rolls were incredible I forget what they were but the waitress recommended it.

Customer service was poor. Ordered takeout and was told it would be a 35 minute wait. Arrived on time, paid, and sat around waiting another 30 minutes for the food (a small order of 3 menu items). Asked to have money refunded and was repeatedly told they are working on it. Also charged a 7% Takeout Fee which Ive never seen anywhere else Ive ordered food. Sashimi was also not cut properly. If youre visiting Tahoe and looking for sushi, Id recommend somewhere else.

I understand that they are understaffed. for example: saw three servers that were bussing, hosting, and their expected job as a server.i think the main problem with this restaurant is the layout. i have never seen a kitchen so far away from the sushi corner. why are they separated? i saw the chefs using walki-talkis to communicate with each other. if they were in the same spot, they wouldnt need a communication device. because of this, there is a lack of tables and an extremely long wait line.we waited for 1.5 hours and waited an extra ten minutes to be seated, only to be seated at the bar for three people. the waiter who seated us didnt even give us the menu, and we waited an extra extra ten minutes to get attention.food wise, i would say slightly below average. the roll was good, the tempura was good, and the nigiri was good. the reason why i bring it down though is because1. there was no udon in a JAPANESE themed restaurant2. the miso soup had mushrooms. i have been to a lot of Japanese restaurants and never have they had mushrooms in their miso soup.3. the sauces that came with the tempura plate was extremely weird. the tempura sauce was thick for some reason and it came with sweet and sour sauce. NEVER EVER had that happen before.im sure that other people had their reasons for giving this place a five star, but i cannot agree. i am truly appalled at the lack of authenticity or even the ATTEMPT to resemble the culture. would not dine again.

Such a cute place, I love the different appetizers and rolls on the menu. I didn’t take a picture of the appetizers but we ordered the ceviche and spicy garlic edamame. OMG ceviche was SO good, it’s served on crisped won ton sheets. The edamame was limey but was still refreshing, was a little thrown back with the lime since it’s called Spicy Garlic. But still good! Rolls: Bonsai, Volcano, Pezu and Lobster Crossing is in the picture. My favorite was the Bonsai, it’s a no rice roll, just taste light and fresh! I see on the reviews complaints about service. We went rush hour time around 4-5 on a Saturday. I overheard some employees saying how they felt the rush was a lot for them and how they stayed later to help because they knew they needed help. It seems like this place has a great team and I was pleased with service even though they were busy. Lastly we got our 4 rolls quickly and it was so nicely put together. Thank you for being open and serving this amazing food. You guys are all great.

The salmon and Hamachi were fresh and tasty... The tuna was not. The cooked Hamachi Kama (jaw) that they included in my sashimi plate, as a gift for a long wait, was very good. The servers are young, attractive, capable, and chatty, but I had to chase mine down to get a drink refill, and it feels a bit like social hour rather than a professional restaurant. Still, I came away in a pleasant mood and enjoyed the outside table.

My family and I went here for my 30th bday since the reviews boasted the best sushi in the area. We arrived and ordered apps which came out very fast and were delicious to be followed up with 5 sushi rolls and a teriyaki chicken bowl. We waited at least 45 mins to an hour later and our sushi never arrived. People that walked in and ordered after us had already received their sushi and were finishing while we were still waiting. Our waitress was very nice and sweet but I could tell she didnt know what was going on and said it was due to multiple orders coming in at once. But our chicken teriyaki bowl came shortly after ordering our entrees just not the sushi. We noticed the sushi chefs were on their phones and slacking off while orders were coming in and we suspect that they gave our rolls to other customers who may have ordered the same thing. We ended up asking for our rolls to be boxed up so we could leave and that took another 20-30 mins just confirming that they never fulfilled them in a timely manner.... Our waitress gave me mango mochi to go (on the house) which was kind but overall we were incredibly disappointed with our experience..The sushi that we ended up eating at home was really good, but the service in the restaurant was a disaster.

Incredible spot! Perfect evening.There were lines and waits at so many other places and we stumbled on Yugen. Their outdoor covid setup went above and beyond with great heatlamps, table fire and cozy tents. The food was exquisite and miso soup so perfect for a cold night. We got the sakura and Tom rolls. Everything was great, can’t recommend enough and so much better than the tourist traps in heavenly village. Thanks for the awesome evening.

Wonderful location with ample outdoor seating. The wait staff was attentive, friendly and helpful in making our decisions. The ceviche roll was incredible. The deluxe rolls were creative, fresh and scrumptious. The Nigiri was so fresh and the presentation was just beautiful. Some of the best sushi we have had. Great sashimi restaurant. If you want sushi or sashimi, you need to come here. The sashimi chef understands what good fish is and doesn’t skimp on the size of the sashimi too. Whereas other places cut their fish thinly like paper, this chef cuts it like a brick. The quality is extremely good and the ambience was very comforting.

My husband & I dropped in last night for dinner and were pleasantly pleased with our experience! We ordered Takoyaki which was INCREDIBLE. The crystal shrimp deluxe roll was by far one of my favorite rolls featuring a lemon kick paired with spicy Mayo! My husband ordered the peluza roll and it was filling and flavorful. Our entire order was beautifully displayed on a wooden boat and our server Jamie was helpful and made it very easy to ask questions.

Amazing sushi dinner! We had a BBQ albacor and Beet poke for appetizers. Then moved to Mushroom and Lilly roll along with Nigri seared tuna and a glass of Pinot Noir. Our waitress was Danni and she was fantastic. We were a challenging table with a vegan and gluten free diners. Danni rose to the occasion and we were delighted with our food and service. I haven’t enjoyed sushi this much anywhere in the Bay Area. It might be the only time I complain about generous portions - better to come with multiple people to have enough room to try more than 2 rolls! The vegetarian rolls in particular were so interesting that I had to forgo some fish to try them. Delicious.

We went for the happy hour on Thursday and absolutely loved the place. We got 2 orders of wings and 3 orders of edamame and 10+ deluxe rolls and the order was only 150. I’ve been coming to this place pretty much since they opened. Everything was always great except for today we had to wait 2 hours When they said it’d be one. we asked for a specific table and the hostess sad yes then she said no after that and sat us at a different table. Everything started off fine but then the server was taking way too long to do everything (bring a fork or a cup). Took her almost an hour to bring ice cream out to the table then lost our tab. Seems like they only had two servers maybe consider getting one more??food and drinks are always great!!!

The place is pleasant and the waiters are cordial. But, this is not a place for vegetarians. We ordered spicy mango veggie rolls and ended up getting chunks of meat with the veggies on top. If you are a vegetarian or a vegan, just make sure you check everything before you eat.

One of my favorite Sushi Spots in Tahoe. Great quality and not high-priced line some of the other better sushi spots. Creative rolls and dishes. Giant wooden sushi boat is a hit for larger groups. Favorite rolls are Godzilla, Tim and Volcano.

Just had an amazing birthday lunch for my son at this place. This restaurant last year was A French Restaurant, so we were pleasantly surprised by this new Sushi restaurant. We didn’t know that they close at 2pm and we arrived at 1:55pm. Instead of turning us away our friendly Waitress sat us down and took our order. Everyone enjoyed the Takoyaki appitzer. The Vegie Gyoza was ok not the best we‘ve had. My husband usually doesn’t fill up on Japanese, but he found the Large plate Tempura filling and delicious. My daughter had the Green Monster and said it was the best sushi roll she has had so far. The birthday boy could not finish the Large plate Chicken Katsu sandwich, which is saying a lot. That kid is a bottomless pit. I loved the ceviche salad, it was delicious and the plating was gorgeous. I had soft shell crab roll and it was amazing. The waitress was courteous, friendly, and prompt. She knew the menu and was ready with suggestions that were spot on. We hope that this place makes it more than a year, we’ll be back When we are escaping our next heat wave.

Both were awful - and it is pretty hard to screw up teriyaki. Spider roll was so so. I wouldn’t repeat and wouldn’t recommend based on this experience.

Very understaffed = long wait and cold food. Takeout order was quoted at 35 minutes and took over an hour. Then stood in line for 30 mins waiting just to get the food. The poor hostess was running all over but the line for seating and pickup only got attention to about 1 person every 10-15 mins even though there was a ton of open seating. Really need more staff to make a decent experience

We had a Hotel a few blocks away but the hour wait at 5pm on a Thurs. sent us to Samurai sushi with no wait and a 5 star authentic Japanese dinner. My gfs bday was the next day and we wanted to try Yugen. Again an hour wait at 4pm and when we were seated he put us by the bathrooms which ruined any chance of a birthday celebration. I sat against the wall looking into a disheveled living room with a fireplace and the sushi prep area all mixed together. Waiter was polite and doing his best but painfully slow with just the basic courtesies. I watched a couple come in 15min after us and had already put in their order while we patiently waited. Sushi was sub par and the sunomono salad was literally a cucumber cut in long strips sitting in vinegar. The difference between a real sushi chef with lifelong experience and someone that was trained a few months ago seems to be the case here. Waited a half hour for our check and dessert when they could have seated others and had us outta there in a more efficient manner. Green tea ice cream with rainbow sprinkles? Dont believe the hype its ok at best and for us a disorganized atmosphere and untrained staff.

Third time coming here, terrible service and increasingly sub-par food quality. 20 minutes to get a glass of water or receive any attention, server couldn’t open or pour the wine we ordered to save his life, and our appetizers and entrees came out at the same time. Upon receiving our entrees we found that my fiancé’s cooked salmon skin hand roll came with RAW scallops. All three of our experiences had similar issues, but this was bad enough for me to leave an uncharacteristically bad review.

Good food, good service and friendly staff; everything you want in a restaurant. We ordered some sashimi and some sushi to take out. The first thing that impressed us is that we were able to select which types of fish were included in both items. In most Japanese restaurants, the choices for combination sashimi or sushi are preset, but here they let you choose what you like. The fish was fresh, the portions were decent, and the prices were similar to most other Japanese restaurants. Both items came with miso soup, which was very good. The sashimi also came with rice. I would have given them 5 stars if they had used sushi rice (i.e. seasoned with vinegar and a little sugar) instead of plain rice for the sushi. But overall, I can highly recommend this restaurant.

Very good Japanese food at an acceptable price. We ordered food to go and got three dishes: sashimi combo, nigiri sushi combo and golden beet poke. All were excellent. We ordered the beet poke to get some vegetables, and were very pleased by the flavor. But there were more vegetables than expected that came with the 12-piece sashimi, including seaweed salad, salad greens and cucumbers. The nigiri sushi was good, but the rice wasnt flavored correctly with rice vinegar & a little sugar as is done in Japan. The fish was fresh, the portion size reasonable, and the miso soup was tasty. We would definitely eat there again.

My wife and I loved our first time dining at Yūgen. This is where we had our wedding reception when it was Blue Angel Cafe so the location is special to us. Were glad a really good restaurant took its place. We had the tempura plate, the chicken katsu sandwich, and two rolls. We probably could have done without the rolls because the tempura plate and chicken katsu sandwich were soooooo big. The chicken katsu sandwich was probably the best fried chicken sandwich I have ever had. The tempura plate had a big variety in real vegetables like bell pepper, onion, carrot, potato, broccoli and mushrooms plus 4 large prawns. We highly recommend going here for dinner. We will definitely be back. The staff was friendly and brought our food out very fast.

This place has tremendous potential. Being said, it just isnt there yet.Sashimi - so sad to see delicious cuts of fish splayed out on top of cucumber that takes away from the taste. Cucumber was all I could taste, which was disappointing as I order sashimi for the great fish. Also, the cuts of fish were the strangest Ive ever seen for sashimi (cut at weird angles, in weird shapes).Ceviche - fine, the best we had in the meal. It could be better without the noodles(?) underneath the fish, just doesnt fit into the dish (being said, Im fully aware I ordered ceviche at a Japanese food place).Rolls - massive slices, heavy on the rice. Id personally like to see ~ 75% of each cut, and much less rice.I see where the restaurant is going and appreciate it. Looking forward to hopefully trying again on another pass.
