I got there just as it opened. There’s a table at the top of the stairs with a clipboard and pen so customers can write their names down. I placed my order to go and waited outside. They have outdoor seating.The waitress kindly brought my to-go order outside to me. I ordered tamago, salmon and tuna nigiri along with a California roll. The fish was strangely slimy and difficult to grasp but did not taste fishy thankfully. It was actually pretty good and of high quality.
Starting from the soup and salad, this sushi place was noticeably higher quality than the average sushi restaurant. Amazing value w reasonable prices and generous slices of fish that did not taste fishy. Waitresses were very helpful and kind. Bento box was a great value and salmon teriyaki was specifically great.
Excellent sushi with good portion of fish and reasonably priced. The hamachi kama was well prepared and also a huge chunk of fish! Highly recommended.
I love the customer service from when I first get there til Im done eating. The sushi is so fresh and delicious. It does get busy but so worth the wait. They have a fireplace outside which is nice..

Small, intimate environment, but the seating still feels spacious and comfortable. I have not felt like there was any breach in personal space or privacy. Even more compelling to me is actually the lack of over-the-top decorations--I appreciate how minimal they are here. The staff is friendly and helpful. Züm gives out a free appetizer of mussels which are delicious. The fish is incredibly fresh and makes this place a hidden gem. The menu for the rolls are full of pictures and the items are decently priced. I will keep returning here!The only thing I can complain about is the dessert-- for some reason, they cant fry green tea ice cream, but they can fry chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. I got the green tea mochi to fix my craving, but the plate only had two mochis that were sliced in quarters and had tempura flakes surrounding them. For so little I do feel that it was overpriced, but everything else about this place is so lovely that I am willing to simply skip dessert here.
Went for the chef choice sashimi lunch. The fish quality, freshness, and presentation was great, I just wish the slices were a little thicker. Overall it was a good experience - will have to come back to try out more on the menu.

Spiderman roll $13.50 was good, but missing the traditional soft shell crab claws sticking out of the roll. Chirashi $22.95 was fine, but slices were unevenly cut and small, not as big portion as I expected; Sushi was fine. Overall food was fine but nothing memorable; atmosphere was better. 100 teacup display is neat. will try other places before I consider coming back. I would try udon next time.

Was disappointed that the other sushi establishments were closed for lunch and felt like we settled for this one as we did not have it on our original itinerary, but we were pleasantly surprised. The sushi was great and the service was awesome, Priscila did a great job keeping up on the table and it was a quick lunch (which was great because we were in a rush). Enjoyed our time there and the laid back atmosphere.
Vegans rejoice(non-vegans too), the caterpillar is the best veg roll I have ever had!!! Mango tango rocks too! Everyone eating here is happy because its sooo good!

Found this sushi place randomly but the quality is pretty good! Both sashimi and beef teriyaki are great choices!
Its small, you might want to make a reservation. We were lucky and got in after a 15 minute wait. Sat at the bar and enjoyed the hot sake while we watched our dinner be made. The food was fresh and fantastic. I look forward to eating there again.
The cutest little spot with the most delicious sushi! On the walls, they have sake cups from regulars so they always have their personal cup when they visit. So cute.
Great sushi place in Monterey!Oyster starter on the house, you can taste the sea from it!Would definitely recommend the chicken katsu set, remember to add curry to it. So yum!Price is reasonable.
Amazing and fresh. Such a wonderful dinner experience. From the moment you walk in you feel like your coming over to your neighbors house for dinner. Light music playing classics and watching your dinner be prepared. Family run from the feel of it. Service was friendly and speed was excellent.

Due to the Wuhan Virus, the dining room is closed, but they will serve you on the out door patio picnic tables. Same great food with the service of takeout... I had a bento box with salmon and tempura.

Cozy, with a fun assortment of specialty rolls. The only complaint I have is that the menu doesnt specify raw vs cooked fish (ordered a soecial salmon roll and it was cooked now raw as I expected). Otherwise it was a great, random stop in Monterey

Stopped by for dinner, long wait but well worth it. The beef and salmon teriyaki were both cooked perfectly. The miso/peanut dressing was a pleasant surprise. The rolls were inspired and well done. Service was attentive. No complaints!

Got really great salmon and tuna sashimi, fresh and great quality. Gyoza was also great! Great take out and I will certainly order those again! The firefighter roll was disappointing, the spicy tuna inside didn’t taste super fresh and was really fishy, couldn’t finish it. I will order from there again but I wouldn’t order that specific roll again. I recommend this place but not their firefighter roll.
Friendly atmosphere. This one of the local restaurants that stayed open for take out during COVID times. We enjoy our experience every time we come here. One star is out because it feels a little bit overpriced for the dinner time. But great for lunch-hour specials.

Food was delicious and presented well. Staff was friendly. I have given two stars based on the staff asking me to move to the sushi bar after I was seated by them, already ordered, and was drinking my Sake. They needed my table for a larger party. The sushi bar is in the busy to-go order packing station, not at the window where I was sitting watching the ocean and the street. Being older and by myself, I felt out of place when staff explained to the waiting customers that my table wasnt available yet. Also, two waitresses took my order, then doubled up on the order, and then explained to me why it was my fault. I finished my Sake quickly and had my yummy food packed to go.
Tasty saba shioyaki and tempura for my combo dinner plate! But the wait is very long, not sure worth the 45-60min wait and seemed understaffed as a result. But very much appreciated the waitress and her sweet demeanor. Overall recommend.

Best sushi!! I didn’t even use any extra sauces because the flavor of each roll was outstanding! Not to mention how quickly the rolls were put together but still perfect and so good!! Went for dinner the other night. Moderately busy, but we were seated quickly. Staff was very courteous and safety conscious. The menu was diverse and affordable. We ordered some sashimi and a couple rolls. And Miso of course, which was hot and delicious! Are food arrived quickly. My wife had the noodle bowl, which was full of vegetables and was hot too.We would definitely go back next time we are in town!
Absolutely the best on the Peninsula. The owner is hands on and what a great family. We have been taking our family here since he opened many years ago. Zum Sushi is the freshest fish and the best service. Love!

As always, Zum was EPIC.That is a word not used often. Each visit is great. Clean, friendly and OPEN. Show up early dinner...5PM for patio seating. Same DELICIOUS sushi keeping with the times.It made me SO happy to have this comfort back. This visit was for my youngest sons 20th birthday. I asked what he wanted and Zum was what he said.They, yet again, didnt fail to satisfy. Worth every penny, we enjoyed a family experience we have missed for too long.If you havent been, go. Life is too short not to have this experience at least once. Zum.

Great location! The food came out quick and was delicious!The calamari rings are soft, flaky, and yummy. I’ve never had them this way before.The spicy edamame beans were also great.We got the spicy “mixed zone” and the “lighthouse”, both of which were very tasty!

Still doing temperature checks for dining in but understandable. This business needs to invest in a quality temperature reader. Multiple false readings and staff worker admitting to it. This was the annoying part of my dining experience. Tempura batter on dishes was ok. Definitely had better elsewhere. Sushi was overall was good.
I am blown away and this was my first visit to Zum. Heard nothing but great things. Try the XXX sushi roll (pictured far right) and the Hawaiian roll. Will come again!
Excellent sushi and service. They have dark Asahi beer here, which is great because not a lot of places carry that. Their spicy mussels are amazing. We got the lighthouse and seaside rolls and both were really good. This will be a weekly spot for me.
Zum sushi has become a staple for us. This last time the yellow tail was recommended by the chef, and it was excellent. Everything we ordered was fresh and flavourful. The last few times we ordered take out we ordered too much because everything is so good. Love this place.
I always order via doordash from here when Im in town for work. Every time, the sashimi and rolls are excellent and fresh. The shrimp tempura arrives super crunchy. Its always a hit or miss when ordering fried food to go. Most times it arrives soggy. Not here! This is my go to when order delivery.

We were searching for a place to eat. It was walking distance from our inn. The place is very small and cozy. We were able to walk in and sit at the sushi bar. The staff and sushi chefs are very friendly. We sat at the sushi bar. The wait staff will take your order but you can still talk to the sushi chefs who are very friendly. The order arrived promptly and the sushi was fresh. They had fresh crab and uni available so we took advantage of those selections. Our two sushi rolls and uni tasted delicious. We almost didnt take any pictures of anything because before we knew it the food was gone. There were also beautiful flowers outside in bloom. Enjoy!

This place is so good. Sushi price is on the lower end, and the quality is pretty good. The Seaside roll is one of the best rolls Ive ever had. Service isnt lacking either. Truly a gem.
Barely any seats for me and my boyfriend it was so busy. However Hannah greeted us when we found a spot and was quick to serve us our menus also the drinks and food. Us being from North Carolina thought they had some super sushi that was so fresh and delicious. Thanks so much for a good night at your restaurant
The food was amazing and for a reasonable price too! The one thing I have to say that could be a negative is that it took a good amount of time to get our food. The reason it took so long was because 2 servers were ill and they only had 1 working the entire place! Taking orders, bringing them, and bussing tables. That woman worked so hard it was insane. We got great service when they were running less than 50% staffing, I cant wait to see what it is like when they arent busy and short staffed! Wonderful feel and a nice quite place to relax and have some nice sushi.
Zum 100% maintains their awesome quality DURING and AFTER Covid!!!👍 We are happy to report that we had Zum 5/11/21 and the quality remains spectacular…and I say that per SF Bay standards sushi is a solid 10 out of 5!!!Quality is a given, so what about service? Another 10 out of 5 stars. These guys are so nice and generous…you can not understand why you ever suffered from other sushi shops. Do yourself a favor and check them out! Cheers…dk
Sushi (tuna and salmon rolls) was good. Nice flavor and simple to let the fish shine.Service was … odd. After putting our name and phone number on the list, we waited and were passed over multiple times. A vague excuse that their phone doesn’t work because of call-in orders was offered instead of a simple apology. On a better note, one of our appetizers was mixed up and served after our entrees, but the server acknowledged the mistake.Probably just an off night for the front of the house.

Ive lived in the Central Coast and Bay area for over 20 years, and have literally never had better sushi! Fresh, beautifully presented, with an absurdly large selection. The place has a wonderful intimate vibe, and is staffed with people that make you feel welcomed as though youre old friends, from the first time you visit!
Granite it was the end of the evening... But the smell of Pine-Sol cleaning agent while delivering our food made me ill.The rolls were loose and it had the feel of close close hurry .Just communicate that and Id go somewhere else !
Sushi was very good, presentation excellent, prices fair. Our waitress (Katharine) great, excellent service. I gave Zum a four Stars for these reasons... Unfortunately the hostess was terrible, seating was almost immediate, and in that short period of time we ( a group of 4) felt like we were social outcasts. As good as the food and waitress were, I wont return.

Most amazing place weve been in a long time. Amazing food and service. Had rude people sitting next to us, our 10 month old was upset and we were trying to calm her. Had rude comments made about breastfeeding her and rude comments about her crying. Got up with her to take her outside so others didnt have to hear it and they STILL had rude things to say. They asked their son multiple times if he was ok because I was nursing our daughter. Our waitress was so amazing and helped us move our food to their outside patio to eat. She also talked to her manager and he came out and apologized to us. They also gave us free dessert for the rude people. We will be back!!!
Took one hour lunch to place an order from Zum. I was placed on hold as soon as the man answered the phone for 15 minutes. Called back 10x shortly after until the man answered the phone again and asked meto hold AGAIN. When I asked how long was the wait to pickup he said I would need to wait 25 minutes before he could EVEN take my order. I wasted my whole lunch trying to order one roll from this place. Side note I wanted to order a fried roll as I’m 33 weeks pregnant 🥺😭…. Not fulfilling cravings is a pregnant women’s worst nightmare. never ever ATTEMPTING TO order here again!!!
Wonderful sushi place. The staff were so kind and saved our evening after a different restaurant was rude to us. They make amazingly fresh delicious rolls. They served us in a boat which was fun! And we even got free mussles that were perfection. Will definitely go back when we return to the area.
Great service, great location, and great food. We were served complimentary mussels with a delicious pepper topping. We ordered two rolls: one vegetarian, the Mango Tango, which was delicious, and the Mixed Zone, which was definitely our favorite. Ultimately, my wife and I shared two rolls for less than $30 (including tip).
The food is great. My family loves the food. The problem is with takeout orders. We had to stop going because they would miss a roll all the time. In addition, they give an estimated 45 minutes but we have never once gotten it on time. We have always waited at least another 15 minutes. We aren’t even ordering tons of food so it’s bizarre and confusing how they can mess up so many times.
The chirashi was tasty and fresh and mixed zone roll was good. Was not impressed with fire fighter roll. They told me 20 minutes for pick up but ended up waiting another 20 minutes there. Make sure to ask for soy sauce and chop sticks. They didnt put any in the bag.
It was ok. I would never go again especially during covid. Everything was served outdoors, got cold quickly and you cant enjoy your food served in cartons. Door dash slows everything down to a crawl at dinner time. They have no outdoor heaters only ambient flame units. The tea was terrible but the saki is good. Food is average.
Weve been here twice. The first time I had some specialty rolls... I cant remember which. The second time I had chicken Udon. Very friendly staff, good portions and fair prices. Only the second sushi place Ive visited in the area but it is the best. (Not a dig on the other place it was good too, this place was just more to my liking)
There are many choices for sushi in the Monterey area, but I would put Zum as a serious contender for the best of the best. The quality of the fish is always top notch and they have many fantastic and interesting rolls Ive never found anywhere else. Because the quality of the fish is excellent their traditional sushi offerings are fantastic as well. Zum sushi never dissapoints
Ive had a lot of sushi in my time and this restaurant ranks at the top. We ate various pieces of sashimi, rolls and teriyaki chicken. All of it was fantastic and not overly complicated (every ingredient had a purpose). Well be back every visit to Pacific Grove.
Top notch Japanese sushi, seafood and service!We were treated to an exquisite ocean view on the lovely garden patio on a warm January afternoon. As my dog enjoyed her bowl of water then stretched out on the patio soaking up the sun, our attentive waitperson brought us complementary fresh, spicy green lipped muscles then helped us choose the most delectable salmon and eel sushi rolls. I strongly recommend the fresh seaweed salad side. Delight in a desert of tempura ice cream, we chose dark chocolate chip flavor and thoroughly enjoyed our entire experience!

Sushi is TOP NOTCH here. I am a stickler for good sushi and this is the only place on the peninsula I go. Chris and Jason are brothers and co-own Zum, and it is truly a remarkable spot. Their passion for amazing food is evident, I would highly recommend this place for those who care about the quality of sushi they eat!

I came in with four young children. I dont think they liked that very much. The lady who sat us and waited on us the first half of dinner was not friendly, seemed slightly annoyed. My kids are big sushi eaters so I thought being right next to the ocean it would be fresh, didnt really taste that way. None of us liked it much. The noodles, my kids very much enjoyed and the lady who waited on us the second half was very freindly and redeemed this place for us.
I love sushi it saddens me that this spot is losing its way the first time I ate here it was clean and the food was fresh this time the place was a mess food and garbage on the ground I could see black grim on the kitchen floor so we left before ordering
Food taste is excellent, waiting time is horrible, even the time they take your card to swipe around 10 minutes maybe more, for round trip.The staffs will take your temperature before allowing you get in the restaurant, which is good but doesn’t help much for COVID, since COVID carrier doesn’t have to have temperature.Make sure you have the utensils you need before leaving.Recommend you to call in an hour ahead before you pickup. Or have them to pay the ultimate “price” by using “doordash”.I also recommend you to support local business.
Called as soon as they opened. It took 45 min to make the sushi. When I arrived, I waited in line for 20 min. Couldnt get my order or anyone to help me. The food maybe great but you cant get it.
Good, albeit smaller rolls for affordable prices. Their outdoor patio is very cute, with the views of the Monterey Bay in the distance.

Sushi was pretty good. Sea urchin was amazing - so sweet and fresh. The edamame we ordered smelled old though, but they brought as new ones after we made a complaint. Overall a decent place, but non-sushi items (e.g. hamachi kama) could be improved.
Very kind and attentive staff. I only ordered vegetarian sushi which was delicious and very filling. It was worth walking a couple of blocks off of the water to avoid the tourist trap restaurants. Would go again!

Wow, Im a salmon guy and the Sake is superb! Thats the sashimi salmon, but the hot sake warms as good as it tastes! Pair it with a large Sapporo on a foggy PG night. You wont notice the cold.
Zum was fantastic! The food was simply delicious, and the folks working were genuinely friendly and great at what they do. They really set the tone for a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
The food was actually quite good, but the adjustments theyve made for the pandemic seemed a bit unwelcoming and bit confusing. I can only assume that take out customers are their priority, and dine-in (outside) customers are tolerated.
Sushi is decent, service is okay, but the smell in there really put a bad taste in my mouth. Pull the carpet out and drop tile in, put proper HVAC, or do something. The smell alone will keep me from returning.

We went there on a weeknight and though the small restaurant was not crowded, the two of us have to wait around 20 minutes for our order of rainbow rolls. Though the service was very friendly, it doesnt overcome the need to wait when the restaurant was not busy!Now, about the food...For some reason, overly sweet teriyaki sauce was poured over our large sushi rolls, making the experience more like eating candies! In other restaurants, the teriyaki sauce was lightly brushed on while it appeared they either poured or spooned large amount into our sushi rolls.Then, the rolls themselves were loosely wrapped or the rice over cooked with too much water because the rolls were very mushy. While the prices for the rolls were reasonable, Id rather pay more for a decent, more traditional Japanese sushi meal! We could not stop comparing what we were eating with the same items from the far superior iki riki in Seaside or Crystal Fish down the road!My partner couldnt finish her roll and we quickly paid and left, we would not be going back there again; there are many other much better Japanese restaurant in town.
Very fresh sushi. The appetizers were large and can be combined for a good dinner option. The jalapeno poppers are a must. Two oysters were on the house. Attentive staff and highchairs are available.
Mediocre at best. Ordered 4 rolls and all were bland. A little flavor can go a long ways. Even the Wasabi was bland... Nothing was bad, just nothing stood out either.
Sushi is kinda fresh not the freshest fish on line but good enough for Monterey. The sashimi special bowl is good and decent price. Would recommend to others.

Zums food is consistently good!! I rarely eat out but on those rare occasions zum is my top choice, and i live in santa nella ca!!
Service was great and tried several sushi rolls and sashimi, all were excellent. The Tempura was also light and crispy.
Had three different rolls - Red Tiger, Spiderman, and Dragon. Red Tiger was definitely my favorite with crispy toppings and mildly spicy sauce.
Great sushi spot. Fantastic service the staff at Zum are fun and treat you like family.
Very good, fresh, great presentations in a quaint little building. To go orders can make your order take a bit longer. Would go back without hesitation
I normally dont eat sushi but when I tried their sushi the flavor exploded in my mouth like a fire cracker full of flavor. I WILL go back for more someday. I recommend the xxx roll, fire fighter and spiderman

The fukomaki roll was good but cut way too big. I need a much biggger mouth for those pieces. Edamame was not salted.

2023-09-19 20:44:25Cool to see an older house converted to a sushi restaurant. Fantastic restaurant to dine outdoors. Sushi was good. I ordered a roll with popcorn shrimp on top and it was delicious. Nigiri pieces were nice and large. It was cool to see my rolls come out on a boat! My friend I was dining with ordered gyoza which came to the table cold. He could also only order them crispy OR steamed. First time they arrived, the gyoza were cold. They were kind enough to remake the dish entirely. Server was nice. Only gripe was both of our water cups ran dry and werent refilled.

2023-02-12 02:36:40Food was good. Staff super friendly and had great service. Sat us in the only spot open and it was right by the door. As soon as a back table open up they offered to move us. Had the calamari rings. They were a little on the chewy side and I’m not used to them with tartar sauce. Didn’t fit the sushi vibe for me. Fire Fighter roll was good. Says 🌶️🌶️ but was more of a 🌶️ didn’t stop me from finishing it. Crunchy roll was delicious. Soda come in a can with mason jar. Good place to eat prices were better than expected for the location.

2023-08-09 02:33:05Our party of five found this place after reservation was botched by the other sushi place half mile down the road (which I have separately reviewed). After the terrible experience at the other place, we were sure what to expect. But the friendly and efficient host quickly put our mind at ease.First she gave us an approximate wait-time, then she said shed try to speed it up. And she did by moving a party of 2 so their corner spot would become available to accommodate our party of 5. The food came quickly once we ordered. And it was good! Our favorite was the uni shooter, but we also liked Zum Zum roll and the toro sashimi.The business has separate indoor and outdoor seating. Exterior is quite charming (but not very Japanese-looking 😏). Inside the ambiance is cozy, with a display of an extensive sake cup collection. The service was attentive, efficient, friendly without being overfamiliar.We had a great time, and we ordered a lot! Highly recommend.

2023-12-07 20:46:02Nice view from the restaurant. The size of sashimi cut was not large as expected. Also, for the sushi lunch/dinner combo they should be more generous about giving a full set of rice, soup and salad, not just allowing you to choose one of them.

2023-01-29 02:09:29Friday night. We arrived around 545 as a party of 5. We lucked out and the last seats available which were the 5 bar seats in front of the sushi bar. They are busy with to go orders too. Come early it isn’t a large place so they don’t have that many tables. They have a nice area in front outside to wait with a fire pit. Everything was good. I liked the hamachi carpaccio so much I ordered a second one. I also had the rainbow roll which was also good and would order again. We shared the Agedashi tofu. My son got the Spider-Man roll and said he would order that next time too. Daughter doesn’t eat fish so she got the plain udon and the mango tango roll. The pricing for the udon is very reasonable. I tried a mango tango and it was very good. It’s very plain but great for kids(even my big kid). The only thing that wasn’t that great was the beef in the bento box. The salmon was super good in the bento box. My husband got the xxx roll and confirmed its spicy. Service was good.We found our favorite sushi place in the area. 👍👍

2022-07-10 04:41:08We were craving sushi after the whole 17 mile drive and the scenic Carmel-by-the-sea scenic route adventure… did some quick google search and Zum was often mentioned. We made our way here asap before closing. It’s a small establishment and it does get busy.. a good sign of course. We ordered their seaside roll, uni/sea urchin (market price or $20 at the time of ordering), and two chefs choice (omakase). We were surprised the food came in a boat. It was a nice touch. I’d say Zum is hard to beat for what you get. The portion of fish was generous. I wish there was more uni to rice ratio but I didn’t feel scammed. I haven’t tried other sushi spots in this area but I can confidently say this place has good value and quality at decent price (if you disregard the uni haha). Try this out when you’re in the area!

2023-03-28 13:10:22I fell in love with this picturesque seaside house as a sushi restaurant. We were exhausted from just visiting the aquarium and walked up a couple of blocks to discover this place. I felt like I should have knocked to enter. I was immediately greeted by the sushi chef behind the bar and slightly later by the server/host. its fairly small so not stroller friendly. I highly recommend checking them out because their food was fresh and flavorful. we enjoyed the seaside roll, which had thinly sliced lemon slices to elevate the flavor and fresh crunchy cucumber. We also enjoyed the Hawaiian roll which had a unique twist of pistachios to add a nutty and crunchy flavor. I highly recommend it. hopefully, I can be back sooner than later.
